Goal Difference Of Plus Five Says It All – Defenders Needed

It’ always interesting to hear Alan Pardew talk about the Newcastle side.

Erik Pieters – is this lad coming to Newcastle this summer?

We have a guy managing Newcastle,  who seems to have been inspired into having his best season ever in football management after 14 seasons, and he aims to have Newcastle a better side next season.

Whether it’s to bring in a new center-back,  who can score some goals from set-pieces, or generally improve the Newcastle defensive displays – there are areas Alan Pardew knows can be improved.

But that’s not to says the lads have not performed magnificently this season, but we often wondered why,  with 19 wins in the bag,  our goal difference ended up at only +5.

Newcastle conceded 34 goals in their league games away from home, and only half of that number was conceded at home – 17 – so our away defending needs to improve next season.

When we have been off our game we’re really been off, and we lost games at Tottenham 5-0, Wigan 4-0, Fulham 5-2 and those are just three examples of games when at some point during the game, our lads switched off.

It was the first half at Tottenham and Wigan, and then the second half at Fulham, after we had played the Cottagers off the field in the first half.

Those are some of the things Alan and his coaching staff will be looking at in the summer, as they try to improve to pinpoint the improvements in the Newcastle squad for next season.

Alan talked about the game on Sunday to the local press:

“The third goal summed us up this year.” “We should have prevented that and we’ve had a few goals like that.”

“So we are going to improve at the back – definitely.”   “The goal difference here this season is only plus five.”

“It means we’ve had to eke out a lot of wins. To get 19 wins and only have plus five shows there is a bit of work to do.”

“All I can say is it has been a privilege to be manager of this football club.” “I am so proud of what the players and staff have achieved.”

“As a team we have been magnificent.”

It seems Alan will be bringing in at least two top defenders this summer, and the favorites seem to be FC Twente center-back Douglas, PSV defender Erik Pieters and Lille right back Mathieu Debuchy.

We’d happily take any two from those three, but there’s little doubt that our defense has been our weakness this season, and it also seems to have been the displays away from St. James Park.

Alan will fix that for next season, that’s his remit in the summer.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

We have won so many games by the odd goal, due to closing the games down, especially at home, this for me is the main reason for our sh1tty goal difference, hopefully next year when we have grabbed a lead at home we will go on and control the match.

We need a quality CB to go next to Coloccini. Someone with great heading on the ball and great passing, and who can also revert to a sweeper for when we play 3-4-3. A proven and reliable last man for when we’re overstretched and desperately surging forward.

not just leaking goals that was the problem with our goal difference, we need to score more if we want to challnge for anything. No goals from any of our CB’s, and our midfield didnt chip in with anywhere near enough. You need to CM/CAM who chips in with 8-10 per season, wethere that be Cabaye, who is capable if allowed to go forward more, or we bring in another i.e Sigurdsson, Elm or someone like that

Yeah. Defenders of quality is a must.
We need NOT to lose players of quality too
And after Pardews little statement prior to the Everton game, I am VERY worried on that score.

Our goal difference would also be improved by scoring from a set piece once in a while.

(Although i’m not forgetting a couple of peachy direct free kicks, Cabaye Vs Man U in particular).

Nick – agreed, however I believe Benny, Marveux and Cabaye will all get on the score sheet quite a bit next season.

If we are giving constructive criticism of the team then we have conceded too many and scored too few.

To say we are 5th is amazing and just think what we could do if we had better defenders and creativity in midfield.

Those areas are the major points to cencentrate on in the Summer.

We need 1 quality RB/LB, 1 immense CB, 1 creative CM and a 1 tricky RW.

    Not too much to ask????

On top of that we need some excellent youngsters to challange for places in the squad.

1 of 2 things are going to happen from now until August 31st. either NUFC are going to be very busy or we are going to be very dissapointed.

I think HBA might get 9-12 league goals and 10-14 assists next season. Marv (if he stays fit) 4-6 goals and 7-11 assists.

I’m less sure about Cabaye, it depends what formation Pards prefers, in any case he’ll be chipping in and he’ll get a hand full of assists at the very least.

Toon_Tom – yeah HBA chipped in with a few, and Marveaux is capable. Cabaye was more of a threat when we were 4-3-3 but seems to get lost in 4-4-2 and doesn’t impact the game in an attacking sense as much. Would still like a goal scoring CB, CAM and winger brought in, aswell as a backup DM and young CB and a full back. Looking at Debuchy aswell, he has scored 5 goals this season, which is pretty good going for a RB.

Regarding the above should we not sign Debuchy and Pieters?

Keep Cabs happy and Krul for £10-12 million?

Sell Willo & Simmo bring in Douglas and then Colo, Douglas and Saylor can battle it our for the starting berths and Peiters can cover the 3 of them.

Santon could move to LW ala Bale and he could track back excellently.

Yours for about £18 million. Sell Willo, Best & Simmo for about £10 million and we are laughing.

Everyone seen Gary Neville has been given a coaching role for the England team? Sounds like a good move to me.

With regards to the amount of goals conceded…we’ve definitely let in too many, it’s clear to see. However, if you look at the changes in defense from the beginning of the season it’s not that surprising…

    Simmo – Saylor – Collo – Raylor

Back line for most of the season

    Simmo – Willo – Collo – Santon

Throw in to that the fact we’ve had Perchinho and Guti jump in at times and Santon is young and new to the PL…it’s not that bad.

Next season should be a lot better imo.

As for goals scored, just wait and see what Benny and Cisse create given a whole season 🙂

When the ball ricochets off your defenders back, into the goal, you have to question what the fcuk the defender was doing facing the wrong way!!

What can you possibly achieve by turning your back on an attacker?? You lose all ability to control what is going on. Its not the first time it has happened, but, it should be the last time.

If you have to take a footy in the danglies to stop the opposition scoring, then that’s what you’re paid for. It makes your eyes water, but you will get over it!!

Actually I think our defence is okay..as shown by the number of clean sheets we had and the awesome season we had. What we need to work on is hot to work together as a team and come back from a goal down. The fact that we did not win a sngle game all year coming from behind shows a lot. It gives teams a pretty clear aim…get the first goal and it’s over.Pardew needs to work on that so 1 nil losses dont turn into 5 nil losses

We scored the same number of goals this year as we did last year, let’s not forget that. It’s not just the defence that is in trouble, it’s the teams attitude when we go a goal behind. We don’t have that fighting spirit in us and just seem to give up!

Garreth…that’s the problem with having too many French players 😉

    Only joking people!

It’s a new team and what they have achieved is amazing. I expect their understanding to improve and the coaching team to drill the come back mentality in to them all

Goal Difference Of Plus Five Does Not Say It All.

We only conceded 3 more goals then Arsenal but we scored 18 goals less.

Its a mixed problem. We scored the fewest goals of any of the top 6 teams by a margin of between 37 (Man City) and 9 (arsenal). Our margin on conceded goals is 22 (Man City) and 3 Arsenal.

Defending does not start at the defense but at the top of the pitch and I would say that something could be said about the backup for the defense being lacking at times too. Tioté missed a lot of games through injuries and Africa Cup of Nations.

We all think Perch did great but playing him in all those positions is not really a sign of strength.

How many games did Ryan Taylor get in the central midfield… not god.

We had a great season, but for us to improve we need a broader strengthening of the squad. Not just the defense.

We need 1 or 2 new central midfielders who can also cover wings if needed. We need 1 or 2 central defenders, a right back and a left back. If Ba leaves we need cover in the attack as well.

if taylor can stay healthy, and we get all three of those guys i would love it.
williamson back in the reserves where he belongs.
hey, we can even get some money if we sell him, wont be much, but its better than having him gobble up more wages.

If Ba leaves, which seems possible, then get Luk De Jong if the price isn’t too high.

Think Jay rodriguez would be a good addition to boost the strikers and maybe Rhodes if Huddersfield don’t go up

As he’s never been linked (i think) Lee Chung-Yong from Bolton maybe a possible bargain and would bring in extra revenue overseas. Plus the fact he’s a quality winger who works hard and can cross is a bonus.
