Newcastle will have their scouts watching the European Championships this summer in Poland and the Ukraine.
Olivier Giroud – Newcastle still interested?
And Alan Pardew has said there are a couple of players in particular they will watch, but these summer tournaments can also be dodgy. How many times has a player shone at the tournament, his price has gone up, and he moves, and is then a flop at his new club.
That happens quite a lot, which is why Newcastle have already done their homework on the players they are after this summer, and Alan hopes they have lousy tournaments so they will not attract the interest of other clubs.
This is what the Newcastle manager had to say today to the local press:
“We’ll be represented at the Euros.” “There are a couple of players we’re looking at in that tournament and, as far as I’m concerned, I hope they have an awful one!”
“The valuations will go up and down – we’ll look at that.” “Someone’s reputations will go through the roof, and someone’s won’t. That might affect the price.”
“Most clubs want to hold off to see how their players do.” “You all want the bonus of your player being the star, or having a big tournament.”
We didn’t think Newcastle were still interested in Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud, but they are due to bring in another striker in the summer, but we thought that would be a younger player than the 25 year-old.
But Olivier looks a good player, and he brilliantly set up Montpellier’s winning goal in stoppage time last Sunday, put in the net by Karim Ait Fana, to give his team a vital 1-0 win over high flying Lille.
The French striker has scored 25 goals for Montpellier this season and also has 8 assists in his 41 games played, and maybe Newcastle are keeping tabs on him, just in case Demba Ba moves on
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa had a decent game for Montpellier in central defense, although the Montpellier captain should have been sent off in the second half for a wild tackle, but the referee didn’t give him the caution – he obviously remembered he had given him one in the first half.
Yanga-Mbiwa has been linked with Newcastle all season, and of course it seems we are also afer Lille’s Mathieu Debuchy, who also played in Sunday’s game at right back for Lille, and is Yohan Cabaye’s friend.
Yanga-Mbiwa almost moved away from Montpellier last season, when the asking price was £5M, but that’s gone up to £7M.
Yanga-Mbiwa was born in Bangui, in the Central African Republic but moved to France as a toddler, and has played 8 times for the France U21 side.
Those are three players Newcastle will presumably be keeping an eye on, but another target – Erik Pieters will not be part of Euro 2012 due to his foot injury.
But the problem with all three players above, is that other top clubs are also very interested in the three of them, and they include Arsenal and Manchester United, to name just two.

Comment #45check @41 – yes the old 1950’s team bus is being changed for a brand new Volvo with Air con and a toilet. Didn’t know Dean Richards was in charge of that? Thought they’d get Didi Hamann in for the driving jobs 😉

Comment #48Arrgghhhh whats going on? The season ended 3 days ago and we have only signed 1 16 year old!!
Where are my god damn signings?!
There aren’t even any good rumours. Just players being sold, Pardew being sacked and us signing a rugby player.
Where is the silliness I was promised?! I need action…

Not only has Giroud got a huge upside he also has a sweet back side.
He does look immense though. Reminds me of (dare I say it) wor Shearer. There are a lot of comparisons to the legend that is sir Alan but I usually don’t get involved with them however Giroud has me frothing at the mouth like a dog with rabies. He is superb.

Comment #53If I had the money and the say so I’d sign the flowing players within the realms of possibility (do not read if you hate this sort of thing rather than moaning about it):
RB – Debuchy – 6 million
CB – Douglas – Free
LB – Peiters – 4.5 million
DM – Diame – Free
CM – Corgnet – 4 million
LW – Hoilett – Free
CF – Kembo-Ekoko – 4 million
Thatxit a total net spend of… £18.5 million
Sell Simmo and Best for 8 million and we only need 10 to get this team!

Comment #55I hardly dare say this but I think after comparing NUFC and Liverpool performances his season, it has become evident to me that Carr’s scouting secret is simply to sign hot young continental dreamboats. forget the fiscal models talk and ‘building for the future’ – the academy is just a catwalk of future hunks who will go into the team and blind the opposition with their swarthy good looks and simmering glances. The scousers on the other hand are a team of complete munters. So get Giroud I say! (GGGrrrrooowwwwwllllllllll)

Comment #59davybtoon- I personally just don’t rate him… I’ve seen him play a bit and his conversion rate is appalling! I think the £6 million it’d cost to sign him should go for a young gun like Rhodes, or add another £6m and get De Jong!

Comment #63@Beattie25 (52) Mouth watering list and just add Marvin Martin to that group and I will seriously impress the wife!!!lol……
However, What wages would that lot want and as Ashley likes all his expenditure up front, could we afford them all? He is also a stickler for sticking to a plan so don’t expect too much. In my opinion i think we will get a new CB new LB and maybe and that is a BIG maybe.replacement for Ba or Tiote if they leave. Hope im wrong though!

Comment #64We need three top quality strikers and another young striker. Therefore I’d sign the following players:
Giroud
Steven Fletcher (still young)
Jay Rodriguez
Marvin Martin (to replace Guthrie)
Diame
Aly Cissokho (miles better than Pieters)
Jan Vertonghen or Aldereweild
Mbiwa
Hoilett
and lots of players for the youth team
I am expecting the following players to leave:
Simpson
Guthrie
Lovenkrands
Best
Williamson
Either Tiote or Cabaye

Comment #66See I’m not convinced on Aly Cissokho- I think his defending is shocking! Reckon we’d be best served bringing in Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea to battle it out with Santon. Also bring in a player like Debuchy and go from there for the RB/LB dilemma!

Comment #68I really hope Tiote leaves for about 15-20million. Because his position is easy to replace as there are plenty of anchorman out there who are pure quality. Can steal Matuidi as well.
15-20million can get us 5 top quality players. Lets hope he leaves.

Comment #71Can maybe see us with an outlay of 15 million tops on transfers plus another 10 million in wages (5 year contracts). Total of around 25 Million and sorry to be realistic but Mr Ashleigh aint gonna change his plans. Maybe 3 or 4 quality players including freebies! Get the right ones in and we will compete again! Great stuff and see you in the Amsterdam Arena for next years Europa Final!

Comment #76Cissokho is a quality player. He is a bit similar to Santon. I’m sure that Santon will be playing at right-back for us next season. We do need to bring in a lot of quality players though, especially with being in the Europa cup. Vertonghen is the player that I’m desperate for us to sign. Hopefully Arsenal aren’t interested and Chelsea win the Champions League, so he won’t move to Spurs. I also want Sochaeux to get relegated. We’ll be looking at Maiga, Marvin Martin and Boudebouz.
We have a great chance of attracting the top class french players as Ben Arfa and Cabaye are in the squad and they will say great things about the club.
We are linked with Cissokho again:

As for Ox, he looks a cracking player and should definitely be given a shot in the games. We need some youth and unknown talent to unlock games.
So, we know the preliminary squad, based on Roy’s choices…what’s everyone’s starting 11?
————-Hart————–
Johnson—–Lescott—–Cahill——Cole
—-Gerrard——–Parker—–?—–
———-Ox——Carroll——-Young

Comment #80Carroll wont be everyone’s first choice, but on his day he is a good CF. Rooney will be missing 1st 2 games and for me Defoe and Welbeck should be used as impact subs unless Carroll isn’t performing.
