Newcastle signed Yohan Cabaye last summer, for the amount in his release clause in his contract – which was a meager €5M.
Yohan Cabaye – great first season on Tyneside
At the time that translated to about £4.3M, and he became another bargain buy for Newcastle, and we hope to see more of those type of deals this summer.
It was a win-win for both the player himself and Newcastle, as Yohan had an outstanding first season on Tyneside, and the 26 year-old is expected to start for France in his central midfield role against England in Group D of the Euro 2-12 on July 11th.
Maybe he’ll have an off day against England. 😀
And Yohan was delighted with just how well Newcastle United performed in the Premier League last term, and he seems happy to be at Newcastle:
“Finishing fifth was beyond the expectations of the club and fans,” “We had a long unbeatean run at the start of the season, which helped gain confidence.”
“There are many French and African players here, as at Arsenal, so there isn’t a language barrier, which makes things easier,” “We get along well with everyone – there really is a good atmosphere in this group.”
“We do not exclude anyone.” “Newcastle was the only club with which negotiations were initiated.” “This was the only real offer I received, but I did not go there by default.”
“After the title and the Cup victory in France, I think collectively and individually it was not possible to do more.” “I needed to grow, and I’m really happy with my choice.”
“It even helped me to play more with Les Bleus.”
In fact the success that Cabaye has had, along with the other French-speaking players at Newcastle, including Sylvain Marveaux, Ben Arfa, Gabby Obertan, Demba Ba , Papiss Cisse and Mehdi Abeid, should make it a lot easier in the summer for Newcastle to sign even more French players.
At least one Frenchman will soon be announced at Newcastle, and that is 22 year old Reims midfielder Romain Amalfitano, who has already signed a pre-contract agreement, and will ink a three year deal on July 1st, and we do expect his signing to be announced by the club within a week or two.
Newcastle have also been linked with right-back Mathieu Debuchy of Lyon, and Montpellier captain and center-back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – although other clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal may also be more than interested in those two Frenchmen.
