Alan Pardew Already Has One New Signing

11:21 am, Friday, May 18th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 162 Comments

Frenchman Sylvain Marveaux looked great in the second half at Goodison Park last Sunday, and it was the highlight of the game for Newcastle fans.

Sylvain Marveaux - like a new singing next season

He was also easily our Man of the Match for that game, and we’ve said before that this lad could be like a new signing for next season.

And it was a master-stroke by the Newcastle manager to let the lad play that last 45 minutes of the season, after being out since last October with his groin and hip problems.

Marveaux missed the last seven months of the previous season too, with a groin problem while he was at Rennes, so the run-out should give him great confidence he can become a top player for the Magpies next term.

Unfortunately the French midfielder’s first season in the Premier League did not go well because of those  injuries, but there’s also some very good news.

Sylvain traveled to the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado to have surgery on his hip, and last November it was confirmed that he had completed his hip surgery, which was performed by Dr Marc Phillipon at the clinic.

We have to hope that’s the end of two seasons of injury nightmare for the 11 times capped French U21 International – he deserves a break.

A fully fit Marveaux next season will be great for Newcastle, and it’s good that the club were able to come to terms with the Frenchman in mid-June  last year, after he could not agree terms at Liverpool.

Newcastle whisked him away from Liverpool late on Friday night, 17th June  via helicopter, and had him signed up by 2:00am on the following Saturday morning – and then he got some sleep presumably.

When Newcastle want their man they go and get him – that’s for sure.

Comments welcome.

    NaCho everyday..

  • 3 Graeme // May 18, 2012 at 11:30 AM

Hope his problems are solved once and for all. He will thrive on a good pre-season and start next season in the best shape he has ever been.

With him fully fit, he could be one hell of a player for us next season – just need somebody on the other side of the pitch doing the same thing – whipping balls in for our strikers!!

  • 4 Rotonda heights // May 18, 2012 at 11:34 AM

Bit of a wind – up title !!!

  • 5 davis_toons // May 18, 2012 at 11:36 AM

Yes, Marveaux seens to be a decent player that can string some passes together for the team when he played. We needed this kind of player to build a stronger foundation. Good Buy if he can stay injury free…

“not another Owen hopfully, where he will come on during the season ended”

  • 6 check the toastie // May 18, 2012 at 11:36 AM

hopefully his injury problems are behind him, however once a fragile player always one in my experience.

Do you remember the good old days before the ghost town…………………………..

  • 10 Beattie25 // May 18, 2012 at 12:15 PM

Part time fans, can’t live with them can’t live without.

Eeirely quiet. I want a new signing just to liven it up.

Shall we start our own rumour??

  • 11 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 12:16 PM

check – even changing names and flogging your autographed footy shirts doesn’t help liven things up does it? :)

  • 12 toonincheek // May 18, 2012 at 12:22 PM

    check the toastie @6
That was my worry right from the start.
He seems like a real athlete and all too often, they are prone to muscle/ligament strains.
But – the operation was on his hip?

Love to have my worries laid to rest – for Marveaux and the Toon.

  • 13 check the toastie // May 18, 2012 at 12:23 PM

Tsunki – You do some decent forged signatures??

  • 14 Beattie25 // May 18, 2012 at 12:34 PM

I’m gonna say it, these are my feelings.

I really believe that if he is picked for the euros and is gven a chance wor Benny is going to light up that competition like a bonfire night display.

I just have one of those feelings

  • 15 check the toastie // May 18, 2012 at 12:36 PM

toonincheek, most of the injuries such as strains pulls dodgy aches and pains are generally down to bad muscular skeletal posture, it seems Marvs problems were down to some faulty hip alignment, hope he comes gud, seems as cool as a cucumber.

  • 16 check the toastie // May 18, 2012 at 12:39 PM

I love Benny, hope he gets picked for France, will bizarrely even smile if he plays well against us.

Have said it before, but of all of our ‘big’ players currently at the toon i wud be most disappointed if he left. I love the boys Tekkers.

  • 17 toonincheek // May 18, 2012 at 12:49 PM

Benny must be the second-most talented player ever at St. James.

But he gives so more more thatn Hughie!

  • 18 markmac // May 18, 2012 at 12:51 PM

@7 i had a signed away shirt from about 04/05 i think from memory, i gave it to a charity shop,as i hardly ever looked at it and thort it would be my good deed for last year! just hope a mackem didnt buy it to burn grrrrrr

regards Marveaux, he’s looked quality whenever weve seen him just hope he can stay injury free, because thats the only doubt we all have about him

  • 19 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 12:51 PM

Check @13 – yeah mate I bluddy well can! you got an ebay account ha ha? :)

I even have a shirt to copy off, one with monsieur Robert’s monicker and another with SBR, Big Al, Aaron, JJ, Kieron… never will sell like couldn’t do it They’re framed as well which would make it a pain to take apart…

Hmmm maybe get a TOFFS shirt and forge ivor Allchurch’s john hancock…..business idea looming. that or jail time.

  • 20 Beattie25 // May 18, 2012 at 12:55 PM

France are my bet for the tournament!

They were ripped apart in 2010 and haven’t looked the same since 2006.

But with so many friends playing together they will enjoy those football and as a result upset many.

I hope to god we get Debucy and Mapou and integrate them with Cabs, Benny etc…

Imagine welcoming back to our club euro champions

  • 21 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 12:57 PM

On Marveaux, I believe he was bought specifically to fix. I know that the Steadman clinic gave Al a good few more years and in days gone by that would never have happened. I actually think we have, bizarrely, got Kieron Dyer to thank. Why? Well, his body and posture was a train wreck, and although he never got fixed (definitely not his head anyways) I think a lot was learned from trying to get him to work, y’know all this jiggery pokery they do with body mapping and computer thingamabobs. From what I have gleaned, Marveaux’s problems were addressed as a radical fix to end all farting about in future with layoffs for months here and there. If he gets through a full season next year, I think we may have our bargain new signing. Here’s hoping.

On benny – if he gets a couple of starts, I think he has every opportunity to set the euros alight. then we will be watching each transfer window through our fingers and from behind the sofa, wearing the obligatory rubber pants. :(

  • 22 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 12:59 PM

markmac – …….and you gave it away…….. I can just imagine a n ‘R’ reg proton in pennywell being buffed by that shirt right now…..

    shame on you :)

  • 23 LEROI // May 18, 2012 at 1:12 PM

We are going to have some amount of options on that left wing next season 1.Jonas 2.Marveaux 3.Sammy 4.Santon(could be converted from LB easily) 5.HBA(he’s played there before) and there’s a strong possibility that we’ll sign Yacine Brahimi & I for 1 hope we do he’s got a hybrid of HBA mixed with Henry ball skills the kid is Awsome.

  • 24 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 1:18 PM

  • 25 Beattie25 // May 18, 2012 at 1:20 PM

If not then we are screwed

  • 26 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 1:34 PM

He’s still working on getting them through the door and into the building.

  • 27 Beattie25 // May 18, 2012 at 1:35 PM

    So…

  • 28 G // May 18, 2012 at 1:36 PM

Regarding Beattie’s Euro 2012 prediction, I would personnaly still bet my house on Spain like. So much quality in depth it’s hard not to see them dominating again. Would be nice to see an outsider win it again, a-la Greece. Let’s face it, England are in turmoil again so I would be amazed if we got further than the quarters.

  • 33 mondziu // May 18, 2012 at 1:57 PM

Beattie – I certainly hope so. Creme de la creme of French football announces they all join Newcastle, as is Clairfontaine academy moving to Brenton. That would make my Monday!

by the time she had parked the car, everyone had already left!!!!!!!!!!

  • 36 Klatoon // May 18, 2012 at 2:11 PM

Marveaux’s injuries mean he may never be that explosive wide man he showed signs of turning into. However his quick brain, vision, subtle touch and composure on the ball may point to a future in midfield. At Everton, AP deployed him as part of a 3man Midfield where he linked things very well and I really feel this will be his role especially if AP persists with 433 next season.

  • 37 Alinufc // May 18, 2012 at 2:12 PM

@Beattie I remember last year cabaye, was reported something like the Friday before the French season finished, and then cabaye confirmed after his match

Everyone heard the news? Can’t bloody believe it!

  • 40 niafron // May 18, 2012 at 2:15 PM

The Euro could freeze all signings in France. Anywway for those who will play it.

CODARM are you talking aboutthe euro crisis?

  • 42 Beattie25 // May 18, 2012 at 2:17 PM

Niafron what do you think the chances are that Newcastle have already signed Debuchy similar to what they did last year with Cabaye?

  • 43 surreytoon // May 18, 2012 at 2:21 PM

Bonjour Niafron. In the last few days, some names have been mentioned in the French press which I now cannot recall Yacine B was one, any news or thoughts on these?

  • 44 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // May 18, 2012 at 2:22 PM

Beattie…Nah…was just trying to muster up some excitement. Seemed you were all a bit bored, but I couldn’t think of a good enough rumour. Fail from me.

  • 45 Tom4Nufc // May 18, 2012 at 2:24 PM

Agreed, a massive fail CODARM… I said I’d be on the lookout! ;)

  • 46 Klatoon // May 18, 2012 at 2:31 PM

That Yacine Brahimi kid we are supposed to be close to signing from Rennes is impressive, almost a rightfooted HBA…emphasis on almost :-)

  • 47 niafron // May 18, 2012 at 2:31 PM

    @check (and the others).

We now got 26 players in the squad.

3 Keepers: Lloris , Mandanda and Carrasso

8 defenders, so we assume thet will all go to the Euro for we got to have two men for each place on the pitch:

CB: Mexes, Rami, Koscielny and Yanga Mbiwa ( a left footed lad who could also play LB).

RB: Debuchy (pure RB) and Réveillère (who could also play LB).

    We got 8 midfields.

defensive: Malouda (considered like that by Blanc), Matuidi, Cabaye, Diarra (Alou, the player of Marseille) and M’Villa.

We need only four of them, so one, maybe Matuidi will leave.

3 Offensive: Nasri, Martin and Gourcuff.

One of them could leave. Altough Gourcuff in the squad was a shock for everyone, i rather see Martin’s leaving.

7 forwards: Ben Zema (striker or LW), Rémy (Striker or RW) Giroud (pure striker, target man Kind), Ribéry (LW, right footed), Menez (could play striker, CAM or Winger, in fact everywhere), Valbuena (CAM or on each wing) and Bény.

Rémy is injured, so he could leave as well. If he stay, this is between Bény and Valbuena i guess.

  • 48 CODARM (The poster formely known as Ibizatoon) // May 18, 2012 at 2:35 PM

And you have not disappointed good sir :)

  • 49 niafron // May 18, 2012 at 2:36 PM

    About Debuchy:

Last monday, it was he awards of french football. Cabaye was there and he gave a long interview to french radio RMC.

He clearly said he’s doing everything to convince Debuchy to sign for NUFC.

Debuchy is said to be in “advanced contact” with Newcastle now, but it seem MU and the bayern are also interested.

  • 50 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 2:38 PM

Beattie -I dunno when the reveals will be but if we are buying a stock of french players I would have thought that the deals were already there in principle, to fail only on last minute terms, and that for the sake of the clubs they were currently with, not to put anything out to the media. I think our main targets will come earlier rather than later, any ‘marquee’ signings will be protracted affairs.

  • 51 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 2:40 PM

niafron – what do you think our chances are of convincing debuchy not to go to the other two? They must be better than they have been in the past, surely?

  • 52 niafron // May 18, 2012 at 2:41 PM

    Some of Brahimi’s skills:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01cIfsBr_L0

  • 53 niafron // May 18, 2012 at 2:43 PM

    @Tsunki.

Good would i say. But it will depend of him signing right now or after the Euro.

If he’s excellent there, big clubs could make an offer Newcastle could not match.

  • 54 niafron // May 18, 2012 at 2:46 PM

As you can see, Brahimi is a pure 10, so with Beny and Marv already in the team and also our two strikers who suggest a 4-4-2 rather than a 4-5-1, maybe no room for him in Newcastle.

  • 55 Beattie25 // May 18, 2012 at 2:47 PM

I’ve said this about a hundred times but I think at least 1 signing has been made and we are just waiting to reveal who it is.

We go about our business like a peeping Tom. We sneak in quietly, watch for a long time, through one off and send our soiled underwear in the post to the victim. What I mean by this is we are sneaky and like to build up suspense and get the fans excited.

I ask any one to defy the opinion that Pards didn’t know what he was saying last week in his interview.

I mean there is no way he would talk about Cabayes friend as plain as day without being sure he was going to sign him.

Which club would put in lots of work, years of scouting and so much investment into players to see them come to life in the euros and he bought by bigger teams?

    It’s either a smokescreen or a signing.

  • 56 toon-hendy // May 18, 2012 at 2:47 PM

niafron : does he have a left foot?

about 20% of his dribbles were forward, the rest he was running back to goal….

    Looks nippy though!

    NUFC inerest in Brahimi
    Rennes: Newcastle looking Brahimi
In need of game time, Yacine Brahimi, the
playmaker of Rennes, strongly interested in
    Newcastle. The Magpies are specifically
    positioned to recruit the ex-Clermontois.
After having approached more or less
    concretely Alain Traore (Auxerre) or
Benjamin Corgnet (Dijon), which is in
    contact with Saint-Etienne, advanced
Newcastle launched an offensive on Yacine
    Brahimi (22 years), playmaker franco-
    algerien of Rennes.
In need of time to game in the red and
black (six tenure this season in Ligue 1),
the ex-Clermontois is on the first place.
And this despite a contract which runs
until June 2014. Negotiations are in
    progress.
Other English and German clubs are also
on the ranks. In addition, always as active
on the French market, the Magpies have
    also expressed interest to Mathieu
    Debuchy (Lille), Ibrahima Toure (Monaco)
    or Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa (Montpellier).

I’d least like to see Adam Johnson!

It’s contrevsial buy he’d eat up souch of the wages and probably cost a small fortune in terms of the amount we can afford.

I’d take him on a loan to buy deal and he may do well at his boyhood club but I wouldn’t risk him.

    Others on my list include:

    Wilfred Zaha – Too expensive
Douglas – Not sold on him
Jordan Rhodes – Untested and too expensive in accordance with his talent.
    Raul – Too old

If I think of any more I’ll post.

Amalfitano is a nr 10 aswell is he not?
So we’ll have HBA, Vuckic, Amalfitano and soon Campbell in a role for a team who primarly plays 4-4-2…
Either we’re changing this or we’re teaching Vuckic the life as a CM.

  • 91 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 4:11 PM

Beattie this Simon lad is a bit of a looker! He’ll fit right into the scouting framework – the intentional hiring of handsomeness to beguile opposition defenders. Phwooaaarr!!

On a more serious note, we haven’t done particularly well with Danes before have we….

    @Tsunki

Polyvalent isn’t an english word? Well, let’s say he got versatility. Better?

  • 95 rich_toonfan // May 18, 2012 at 4:16 PM

I can’t see why we would go after any english players

they seem to either lack technical ability or if they have it lack an attitude to apply it.

Thats why the ones that have ability and a good attitude cost a fortune….they are few and far between.

  • 96 rich_toonfan // May 18, 2012 at 4:18 PM

    @niafron

whats the news in France…..any players linked over there that we have heard nothing about?

and where do newcastle rank in france? obviously not as high as man utd, arsenal etc but are we looked upon as a better option than spurs or chelsea?

  • 97 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 4:18 PM

Unfortunately that is true, and it’s English clubs that have fostered that mentality, over-hyping and over-paying mediocre players. Jordan Henderson . . . really?

  • 98 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 4:21 PM

niafron @92 – yeah I think it is but I think the last time I used it was in a Physics or Chemistry exam and that was a long, long time ago.

    well enjoy your ‘discussion’ haha

I heard a rumour a deal is being tied up for hoilet…..popped up on a few sites….they expect an announcement to be made by the end of next week….not sure how reliable there are though.

  • 103 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 4:29 PM

WWYCD – I’ll qualify my remark by saying that that has been the prevailing trend up until very recently imo. Having said that there are a lot of clubs, including us, who are now starting to look to up and coming talent from the lower divisions who are more reasonably priced prospects. I think the rich vein of talent on the continent, notably France at the moment, is bringing a touch of reality to League 1 clubs who think that their unproven England U-16 wonderkid is worth 5 million because of what he ‘might’ become in 5 years time. For recent, see that young thug Man U shoved off to West Ham recently. Ol’ fatty allardyce got done there, thankfully we didn’t take that one up.

    WWYCD

Could U name a couple of good technically gifted English players with good attitude?? Lets just say name 5 ;)

  • 109 rich_toonfan // May 18, 2012 at 4:44 PM

    @WWYCD

    got to agree about money.

It has made the game so much better, more games on TV, more games in HD, 3D, etc….it allows the premier league to bring in some truly word class players that we all enjoy to watch.

However it prevents decisions being made for footballing reasons….a lot are made for money. Tv dictates when games are played and big money has meant the world cup will be held in Qatar.

And people seemed excited to see financial fair play kick in soon…..but in reality UEFA will not remove the best teams from its tournament no matter how much debt they get it. They would lose too much financially and you will have shareholders, directors in all companies complaining if Barcelona or Real Madrid aren’t in the champs league as the spent to much signing the next messi or ronaldo.

Got to take the rough with the smooth really.

  • 110 cyprus // May 18, 2012 at 4:44 PM

Hope he is not a Dyer – Owen. Best of luck Marveaux

  • 111 Twatter // May 18, 2012 at 4:46 PM

It’s getting to the stage now where the next generation of players will have grown up watching the Premier League… while it’s a great competition, big companies such as Sky and Barclays who now fund it mean that kids growing up watching it will not just want to play football for the love of their game, but also because they can become stinking rich. This isn’t a problem on its own, but if your motivation is only to make lots of money, no doubt the quality of football will suffer. Furthermore because the Premier League is so attractive and the club owners are so rich, this will invite more competition. Competition means that clubs care less about cultivating young English talent because they know they can get the “quick fix”. This means that there is less English quality and therefore the premium for English talent increases.

I’d argue the fact that England is a largely secular society contributes to our downfall too in a way.. of course countries like Germany are similarly secular but their attitude to money is much different to ours. There’s a determination and work ethic in German society which is lacking in ours. The determination and discipline in religions such as Islam (Look no further than Papiss Cissé) I would argue means that these players are more hard-working, better behaved and in a better condition compared to English players. Their lifestyles are much
    better.

Finally when you’ve got a lack of good quality coaching (we’ve got something like ten times less FIFA qualified coaches than Spain, Germany, Italy, France etc.) and the methods that they teach are outdated, that can only add to the problems. For too long England has concentrated on pace and athleticism and that’s why we don’t have enough players in the mould of a Scholes or Xavi. Something England lacks. We’re able to get away with a lack of technical ability when playing sides like Bulgaria or Norway but at the highest level we get found out.

  • 112 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 4:47 PM

tarie4 – to be fair take the word ‘English’ out of there and you still might have a problem getting 5. :)

  • 113 Dannyo // May 18, 2012 at 4:48 PM

The Hoilett rumour would be very nice.
Grant Holt delivers transfer request. Good as stop gap striker for the next 1-2 years? More money for a proper striker when/if we reach the CL, and low risk.

  • 114 rich_toonfan // May 18, 2012 at 4:49 PM

i know many people in different sports who are not “officially qualified” but know a lot more than some who are.

  • 125 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 5:04 PM

There has been a knock on effect from times gone by in this country when players used to get off the pitch and spark up a fag and drink a pint of bitter in the bath – the booze culture kinda hangs on in this country but of course it’s not even on the radar in muslim countries. It’s better here these days and I think that’s one of the up sides to the mass importation of foreign players over the last couple of decades. Sky has a lot to answer for but on the flip side it has raised the profile of English footy and dragged it out of the stand – up bottle throwing terraces where fans watched mud-coated players hammering a ball around a mire. I think the commercial aspect of the game is the thing that has gone out of control, agents are the mosquitos of the game – maybe if players had capped wages (don’t ask me how to implement that!) and that was bolstered by performance bonuses, the agents could supplement their meagre wages even more by sticking to pushing their clients’ image rights. And if transfer fees were pegged back somehow (again, dunno) then players would only move to places they wanted to go, rather than the highest bidder.

Well it was an idea anyway.

  • 126 niafron // May 18, 2012 at 5:06 PM

    gonufc.

Well, Brahimi got a good reputation in France. However he played only 16 games of Ligue 1 this season due to injuries.

  • 127 gonufc (up and Hatem) // May 18, 2012 at 5:11 PM

I knew his name but hadn’t seen him play before. I suppose it depends on what kind of injuries- I mean Wilshere has hardly had a great season but that wouldn’t put many clubs off him.

  • 128 supatoonkid // May 18, 2012 at 5:14 PM

Well looks like were much more likely to sign Yacine Brahimi than Marvin Martin to play as our goal scoring attacking midfielder however with Brahimi being cheaper and younger potentially a much better deal. Hopefully we’ll sign: RB: Debuchy, CB: Mbiwa, CAM: Brahimi, RWF: Hoilett, Phillips or Zaha & CF: Rhodes or Rodriguez.

  • 129 supatoonkid // May 18, 2012 at 5:16 PM

4-4-2: Krul; Debuchy, S.Taylor, Collocini, Santon; Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Tiote, Marveaux; Cisse, Ba

4-2-3-1: Krul; Debuchy, S.Taylor, Collocini, Santon; Cabaye, Tiote; Ben Arfa, Brahimi, Marveaux; Cisse

    Morrison Has a good attitude??

  • 138 Twatter // May 18, 2012 at 5:31 PM

    @rich_toonfan

Expensive and time consuming possibly, a good indicator of the standard of coaching definitely. There is no regulation, no benchmark, no set plan being followed by every coach. One of the reasons for this is because they’re not trained properly and so players aren’t trained properly. Simply dismissing the coaching badges is based on your presumption that we in fact have the quality available which is very dangerous indeed.

  • 139 Tsunki // May 18, 2012 at 5:34 PM

TDS – Henderson and Shelvey – the ones at the heart of the liverpool line up? Maybe work rate. maybe attitude. but not all that fantastic. And I thought Shelvey was in his 30′s he looks so ugly.

They’re both very good players though. It’s difficult to judge two young 20 year olds when they’re playing in a team with Carragher, Downing, Adam and Spearing in it.

Most ‘Pool fans say that Henderson has been the only positive thing about the entire season.

I honestly think England have a fairly bright future all the set ups have changed recently to fit a passing style and the young uns have done well over the past 5 or so years
