There’s some potentially good news in the Daily Mirror today, that Newcastle are going after Crystal Palace’s top young right back – Nathaniel Clyne.
Nathaniel Clyne – Newcastle in for the 21 year-old
Newcastle have been linked with this player all season, but it seems that some other top clubs were after the lad, and it would be difficult to get him on Tyneside.
Palace are said to be wanting £5M for the player who is out of contract in June, but because he’s under 24 – he turned 21 in April, Newcastle need to pay Palace some compensation.
If the clubs cannot agree on the compensation then his valuation will go to a tribunal, but the news is Alan Pardew wants to tie up the deal and take the boy’s valuation to an independent tribunal.
So there seems to be some fog on the Clyne with Nathaniel’s valuation at the moment.
The good thing for Nathaniel is that this lad is good enough to go straight into Newcastle’s first team next season, he’s already that good, and he’s looked a very good player for Crystal Palace throughout last season.
Since he’s only played twice for the England U21 side, it may be hard for Palace to get £5M for him – but maybe £2M or £3M would be an excellent buy for Newcastle.
Newcastle are interested in a right back because Danny Simpson could be sold this summer, and Mathieu Debuchy of Lille was thought to be a top priority – and he would cost around £6M from the French Champions.
But Clyne looks to be a star of the future, and he would be an exciting buy for Newcastle and fit right into the type of players Newcastle are always on the look-out for.
Clyne made his debut for Crystal Palace in a league fixture in October of 2008 against Barnsley, and the 5’9″ tall player has appeared 138 times for Palace since that time.
In 2011 he was named the Crystal Palace Player of the Year, and last October he was named as the Championship Player of the Month, and he was in the PFA Team of the Year for last season in the Championship.
Here’s some video of the lad – and he looks quick.
What do you think?

Comment #5Perch, Raylor, Santon, Tavernier, all available to play RB.
We’re not gonna add Clyne, Trippier and Debuchy to that, i’m sure.
Would be a bit of a waste in that case tbh.
But with Clyne being free and Tripper on the cheap…
Clyne would only get £2 mill componsation tops.

Comment #7The transfer window hasn’t even opened yet and we are alreadylinked with about 200 players already pmsl.
Like last year, nothing will be “real” until the player is announced on the clubs website and photographed at SJP.
Its going to be 2-3 months of complete and utter speculation from start to finish and just not worth the hassle involved. In Carr/ Pardeau we trust!!

Van Persie comments:
When asked if his future would be resolved quickly, he said: “You never know but Arsenal is a massive club. Whatever happens, I’ll always love this club.
“I have been playing here for eight years and I love this club. Whatever happens, that will never change. We will sit down next week.”
Reading the lines, he’s leaving Arsenal, who’s in a position to buy (another) 50 mill player..
maybe Manchester United heh
Probably City though. Or PSG, since Van Persie is originally fom Paris, he might want to play in his hometown

Comment #9Clyne looks a hugely good prospect and he is English. Him and Debuchy coming in would be brilliant imo.
Perch and Raylor are decent utility men but shouldn’t be starting and if am brutally honest we could lose one of them without hurting us. Santon LB and Tav out on loan to a good level league

Comment #10Let’s just cut to the chase.
If Clyne signs it won’t be for the first team as he is not ready. If he comes then I expect Tavernier to be shown he door. I trust in our transfer network do whatever decision they go with is the right one.

Comment #11Joking he’s dutch not French, so he won’t go to PSG, he’s Barcelona quality, though they don’t need another top player surely. Maybe Newcastle should bid for him, how much you reckon he’ll cost?
We need to bid for at least one of ronaldo messi or van persie if we are going to win the premier league next season.
Hatem's better than Messi

Perch and Raylor are journeymen – good cover but can’t be considered starters in any position.
Tavernier is at least another season on loan, away from the first-team squad.
We need at least one quality starting FB and a CB.

I disagree on Clyne maybe wouldn’t be our constant first team RB but I think he would start a lot of games he has played a lot of football plus I don’t think Tav would be shown the door but he hasent played at a decent level yet a loan to a Championship club next season would really show what he’s about

Comment #16Clyne looks a cracking young player as he can defend, he’s quick & skillful, can cross also can play LB as well as his first choice of RB. Can’t see us signing him as Simmo’s replacement when we have Tavernier (unless Pards wants Tav to become a CB although that is unlikely). I think the most likely scenario is we’ll sign Debuchy and sell Simmo or Simmo will realise that there are no better options than to remain at Newcastle but i hope it’s the first as Debuchy is so much better than Simmo and mates with Cabaye.

Comment #17I really hope Ed is mistaken about Amalfitano being a sealed deal and we get somebody better because i think we’ll be looking or should be looking at a certified CM who could come into the starting level straight away with Tiote and Cabaye. I am concerned we’re just looking at replacing Guthrie with a slightly better player.

Comment #18Looks like i may be talking to myself but if Blackpool don’t go up and we miss out on Hoilett i think we should definitely be looking at Matty Phillips as he can play on the right, the left and up top also a very good young player. Hoilett, Phillips or Zaha OPINIONS?

Comment #19Signing Clyne as a first choice RB would be for me a bad move.
Yeah the lads got potential but he is untested at the highest level and would be a massive risk to stick into our starting 11 in place of Simmo.
Not saying he doesn’t have the potential to he immense but we cannot risk the solid foundations we have laid in terms of progression.

Comment #21Only seen the lad a few times, but he looks ready to me. Reads the game very well, closes his man down well, and chases the game a lot. Also loves to get forward. If we can get him for 2 or 3M as Ed suggests, he would be an excellent buy.

Comment #22Clyne as starting RB isnt for me either but cup games, Europa rotation and back up for PL would he would be perfect. Plus 3 proper RBs in a team with European football would be great.
LB is still a problem for me we only have 1 and Raylor/Perch backup and am not fully sold on Pieters

would love Hoillet to join this summer. But agree Matt Phillips would be a good addition, him Butterfield, Clyne, Rodriguez would all be good signings, plus they wouldnt command big transfer fees.
we are getting linked with so many players i’m changing my mind daily as to which ones i’d prefer. I keep saying Clint Dempsey should be in a top 6 side, but imagine his fee would put us off. Him playing behind Cisse with Hoillet and Arfa on the wings would be very tasty!!

Comment #26Would love to see him signed. Can see him playing for England in the future. He’s got pace and he’s surprisingly skillful for a defender and more importantly, he’s committed. Fantastic to get him.
