News today that Newcastle will have a friendly in Portugal over the summer.
And as we reported yesterday there are several reports in Johannesburg, South Africa that the Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are trying to get Newcastle in July for the Vodacom Challenge tournament.
The reports in Johannesburg have said the fees asked by Premier League clubs are very high, and one report suggests the fee Newcastle are asking is £750K.
That fee could get us one young player in over the summer, but it’s cheap at the price, to get the current Newcastle team playing in Johannesburg. 😀
It seems there will be no announcement about Newcastle’s plans until next week, so we assume the announcement will be that Newcastle will play in the Vodacom Challenge tournament, possibly with Spurs also taking part for the second year in a row.
And Newcastle will announce the date of the friendly with Sporting Lisbon, and maybe even some other pre-season games that have been set up.
The Vodamcom tournament is the biggest pre-season tournament in the whole of Africa and was started back in 1999, and it seems there is a high confidence that Newcastle will accept the offer – but Newcastle are also in big demand this summer.
Both Manchester United and Manchester City, as well as Tottenham Hotspur, have taken part in the tournament in previous years, so there’s no doubt it’s a prestigious tournament.
If this comes to fruition, which we expect it will, it will be excellent news for the Newcastle fans in Africa in general, and South Africa in particular.
And it’s good that Newcastle get around to different places of the world each summer, so their fans can see them.

Comment #3Hope we can play some big European team as that’s where the money lies. Would love to have a kick about with a Barca, Ac Milan or a Bayern Munich.
Just hope I don’t have to travel to Darli again as the pitch invasion didn’t go down to well last time.

Comment #10It’s really up to the organisers to sell the TV rights, sponsorship and tickets.
If they can’t make enough to pay the clubs a decent wedge then there are other tournaments …

Broke and groundless. Fans are chipping in.
They need all the help they can get.
