Chelsea won the European Champions League in Munich tonight, after being outplayed for most of the game against Bayern Munich.
Didier Drogba – after scoring winning penalty in shoot-out
But as they did in the semi-finals against Barcelona, Chelsea were stubborn and persistent in defense, and yes they had the luck too, and Bayern also missed a number of excellent chances.
In the 90 minutes Bayern outshot Chelsea by 39 shots to 10.
When Bayern eventually went ahead in the 83rd minute through Thomas Müller, after sustained pressure from the home side, it looked like it was all over.
And indeed Bayern substituted Muller with center-back Daniel van Buyten a few minutes after the goal, and that proved to be a costly mistake, as it changed the game.
Nobody told a certain Didier Drogba it was all over, and in the 88th minute, from Chelsea’s first corner of the game, he brilliantly headed the ball past Manuel Neuer.
And the game ended at 1-1 after 90 minutes.
But in extra time Drogba became the villain, when he touched Franck Ribéry in the penalty box, and Frank went down as quickly as he could, and got the penalty.
But surprisingly, former Chelsea winger Arjen Robben missed, when his spot kick was saved by Petr Check, and it was another bad miss by Bayern Munich.
Nothing much happened by the time the 30 minutes of extra time had come to an end, and the game again went to penalties, as it did four years ago when the Blues lost the penalty shoot-out to Manchester United.
Philipp Lahm scored for Munich with the very first penalty, and it didn’t look good when Juan Mata missed Chelsea’s first penalty with Manuel Neuer saving it.
Penalties were then converted by Mario Gomez (2-0), David Luiz (2-1), Manuel Neuer the goalkeeper (3-1), and Frank Lampard (3-2).
But then Ivica Olic’s spot kick was saved by Chech (3-3), and then Ashley Cole put Chelsea level when he converted his excellent spot kick(3-3).
Then amazingly Bastian Schweinsteiger of all people missed, as Cech just diverted his shot onto the upright, and then the man of the moment came up and Didier Drogba won it for Chelsea – for the first time in their history.
And for once a German club was beaten on penalties by an English club – wonders never cease.
Drogba shows cup to Chelsea ownerRoman Abramovich
Petr Cech was huge for Chelsea in this game, and although Drogba could be the Man of the March for his goals – Petr was Chelsea’s best player.
And it’s also probably good that Newcastle didn’t get 4th place, since Chelsea now become England’s 4th team in the competition for next season, and Tottenham will join Liverpool and Newcastle in the Europa League.
Chelsea were lucky tonight, but it also showed if you keep fighting and never give up – good things can happen.
And they did tonight for Chelsea.
