Chelsea Win The European Champions League

Chelsea won the European Champions League in Munich tonight, after being outplayed for most of the game against Bayern Munich.

Didier Drogba – after scoring winning penalty in shoot-out

But as they did in the semi-finals against Barcelona, Chelsea were stubborn and persistent  in defense, and yes they had the luck too, and Bayern also missed a number of excellent chances.

In the 90 minutes Bayern outshot Chelsea by 39 shots to 10.

When Bayern eventually went ahead in the 83rd minute through Thomas Müller, after sustained pressure from the home side, it looked like it was all over.

And indeed Bayern substituted Muller with center-back Daniel van Buyten a few minutes after the goal,  and that proved to be a costly mistake, as it changed the game.

Nobody told a certain Didier Drogba it was all over,  and in the 88th minute, from Chelsea’s first corner of the game,  he brilliantly headed the ball past Manuel Neuer.

And the game ended at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

But in extra time Drogba became the villain, when he touched Franck Ribéry in the penalty box, and Frank went down as quickly as he could, and got the penalty.

But surprisingly, former Chelsea winger Arjen Robben missed,  when his spot kick was saved by Petr Check, and it was another bad miss by Bayern Munich.

Nothing much happened by the time the 30 minutes of extra time had come to an end, and the game again went to penalties, as it did four years ago when the Blues lost the penalty shoot-out to Manchester United.

Philipp Lahm scored for Munich with the very first penalty, and it didn’t look good when Juan Mata missed Chelsea’s first penalty with Manuel Neuer saving it.

Penalties were then converted by Mario Gomez (2-0), David Luiz (2-1), Manuel Neuer the goalkeeper (3-1), and Frank Lampard (3-2).

But then Ivica Olic’s spot kick was saved by Chech (3-3), and then Ashley Cole put Chelsea level when he converted his excellent spot kick(3-3).

Then amazingly Bastian Schweinsteiger of all people missed, as Cech just diverted his shot onto the upright, and then the man of the moment came up and Didier Drogba won it for Chelsea – for the first time in their history.

And for once a German club was beaten on penalties by an English club – wonders never cease.

Drogba shows cup to Chelsea ownerRoman Abramovich

Petr Cech was huge for Chelsea in this game, and although Drogba could be the Man of the March for his goals – Petr was Chelsea’s best player.

And it’s also probably good that Newcastle didn’t get 4th place, since Chelsea now become England’s 4th team in the competition for next season, and Tottenham will join Liverpool and Newcastle in the Europa League.

Chelsea were lucky tonight, but it also showed if you keep fighting and never give up – good things can happen.

And they did tonight for Chelsea.

I’m so happy we lost to Wigan and Everton now! If we’d come 4th only to miss out it would’ve broken my heart – the whole summer would’ve been me being miserable.

Also, Drogba … at times an absolute idiot but boy can he play when he wants!

For Spuds, this means Ekotto, Bale, Modric are all gone by next August.

One manager you wanted to win today was di Matteo. Other was Fat Sam. He’s guaranteed to lead them right back to where he belongs as Championship Manager

The game of football is the loser, when teams with zero creativity and a cynical attitude can win major championships.

It made no difference what chelsea did to us.

If they lost they enter group stage as winner and we play one qualifying round in the middle of august.

As they won they go into champs league and spurs get the group spot and we still play one qualifying round.

This is on the official premierleague website

@6 – No we don’t! We’ll have one fixture before the group stage. The play-off round! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012%E2%80%9313_UEFA_Europa_League#Play-off_round

Which according to the Premiership’s website is the best we could’ve expected.
“There are three places in the UEFA Europa League available: the FA Cup winners will enter at the Group Stage; the fifth place team in the Barclays Premier League will enter at the Play-Off stage; and the Football League Cup winners will enter at the Q3 stage.

In the event the FA Cup winners are qualified for the UEFA Champions League the FA Cup runners-up will qualify, but in the place reserved for the lowest ranking Barclays Premier League representative.”

Therefore, Spurs in group stage, us in play-off and Liverpool in Q3. If Chelsea hadn’t won they, as FA cup winners, would’ve gone into the group stage and we’d still be in the play-off

Chelsea deserved their win…..there is more to football than all out attack….good, solid defending is equally important.

I would take trophy next year with newcastle winning every round on pens after a scrappy 0-0

remember indian barcelona are only the best at their style

being the best is being able to adapt if things aren’t going well…..barca may play some amazing football, but they showed against chelsea they find it hard to play if teams dont open up

i suppose……but at the same time a lot of that is also down to media hype.

teams have now found how to play against them.

madrid used to struggle as they tried to outplay then, mourinho is too smart for that and now they stop them and hit on the break.

how are they the worst team….you dont get past napoli, benfica, barcelona and munich at their home stadium if you are the worst team.

they were the best to watch but still a good, solid team display.

We were always going to have to play a play off round. How many times…?

shame on dirty ‘arry , the king of wind up merchants ..

finishing 4th and still not qualifying for the champions league will damage the spuds and lead their stars out the exit door , they had 3rd place sewn up in january, but then harry thought he was going to be the next england boss.. which didnt happen after all the “hype”! haha

i personally nominate him for biggest looser/muppet of the season.

Worst because they are not a great side abd got outplayed in most games but somehow managed to win. Solid defence at times you might say. However barca and munich both had plenty of chances to score which means more luck and poor finshing than solid defence. When two of the best players on the planet miss pens againat you, you know your lucks in. And it was again- big time. Also havent checked the stats but in 3 games they must have scored with nearly every shot on target. On most other days they would have lost all 3 games regardless of their defensive efforts. Finished 6th in league over 38 games which tells the true story. Not a fairytail run in like we have seen in the champs league. Fair play they did it and worked hard, but pretty miraculous when you think about it.

“Also havent checked the stats but in 3 games they must have scored with nearly every shot on target. ”

Pretty sure you can’t say they were lucky because they were unbelievably clinical. Are they the best team in Europe? Of course not! Are they Champions of Europe? Yes. And which really matters? In 30/40 years you’ll be able to look back and see they won! It doesn’t matter how they did it. Just as it doesn’t matter that Porto beat the “might” of Monaco and Deportivo la Coruna in the final and semi-final in 2004.

beddersmag is absolutely correct, chelsea didn’t win through a great defense or playing well, it was luck (woodwork 4/5 times barcelona) and the other teams not finishing well enough.

My comment was pointing out that you were incorrect, because you were. Apologies for thinking you may want to know that Chelsea’s victory did not gift Liverpool a European place.

It’s comments like yours that are the issue, taking the moral high ground and insinuating other people are in some way lesser people than yourself for knowing things.

I’ve posted on this blog for a long time, and engage in normal conversation with many people every single day. You, do not. Don’t come on here looking for keyboard fights.

A fair few comments here criticising Chelsea for the way they played and saying they’re the worst team ever to win it? Let’s not forget they had to play 13 games, so to come through all those and win is by no means luck. They played the right strategies and deserve praise for that.

I for one was cheering for them as an Englishman, it’s great to see an English club win! (Of course had we finished 4th I would have cheered for Bayern, but that’s because my club will always come first.)

Well done RDM. Not so long ago he was sacked by WBA, and now he’s done the cup double… pretty miraculous and very impressive!

So chelsea won. Meh. Well after X amount of manager’s, and X amount of millions abramovich finally has his shiny cup. Think he’ll get bored of chelsea now, and go buy a country? Expensive toy thing if you ask me. He should of jus got fifa and chilled on his boat.

And I didn’t get to see john terry cry. Dislikeable man that he is. Oh well c’est la vie
