Newcastle United are busy putting together their pre-season schedule, and we would expect some announcements on that next week.
With St. James’ Park being used for the Olympic games this summer, most of the games will take place away from home, and there were rumors last week that Newcastle would play Sporting Lisbon in Portugal.
And it seems almost certain that Newcastle will play in the Vodacom Challenge in South Africa, which is the top pre-season tournament in all of Africa, and is being hosted by the Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs – two South African clubs.
The fourth team in that tournament could be Tottenham, who played in the tournament last summer, but the London club will be commiserating today with the £20M or so they have lost by being in the Europa League next season, rather than the much more profitable Champions League.
And the fact that Tottenham are not in the Champions League could also adversely affect their transfer business this summer.
Chelsea beat Bayern Munich last night in the European Champions final, and therefore become England’s 4th club in that tournament next season.
Chelsea became the first team ever to finish outside the top five of their local league, and win the Champions League – which is an indication of just how strong the English Premier League is these days.
And Newcastle of course finished above the new European Champions in 5th place in the Premier League – had to get that one in. 😀
It seems that Newcastle could be playing Cardiff City in South Wales as part of their pre-season activities, with Alan Pardew close friends with Cardiff city manager Malky Mackay.
The local media in South Wales are reporting that Newcastle will play in Cardiff City on Saturday 11th August, which is the weekend before the Premier League starts up next season.
With their exploits of last season, Newcastle are in big demand this summer, but of course none of this is official until announced by the club itself.
But we would expect to see some announcements on the Newcastle pre-season next week.
