The Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini, who has turned out be a terrific signing for Newcastle from Deportivo in the summer of 2008, has talked about trying to keep Newcastle’s top players this summer.
Fabricio Coloccini – keep our best players
There is always going to be speculation about transfers in the summer, that’s part of football, but it does seem like at least one top Newcastle player may leave the club.
We don’t know who that may be, but it could be Demba Ba or Cheick Tiote, and since the news coming out of the club is that Newcastle will only sell this player if there’s a huge offer, maybe it isn’t Demba Ba.
That’s because, if we are to believe the news over the last five months, his release clause is only for £7M, unless Newcastle can get him to sign a new deal of course.
Fabricio was asked if he wanted Newcastle to keep their top players, which on reflection seems a bit of a daft question – what did they expect him to say – sell the lot of them?
This is what Fab actually said:
“Of course I would like the team to stay together,” “I think the most important thing is to keep the spine of this team together, then hopefully we will bring in some players to help us.”
“It is very important that we keep that backbone for Europe next season. And of course having some new players would be very welcome.” “There is always speculation in the summer but it will be nice for it not to be about me this time,”
“It happens when the transfer window is open. Sometimes because there is no football to talk about, people just want to talk about transfers when there is nothing there.”
“It is football, it happens but I have always said I’m happy at Newcastle United.”
Fab has turned out to be a great captain for Newcastle this season, and the Argentine leads by example, and of course he also has great experience these days, and the season in the Championship made him into a much tougher defender.
He was a popular choice as captain when Alan Pardew appointed him last July, and here’s the results of the poll we put on July 8th last year – 93% in favor of his appointment.
Is Coloccini A Good Choice As Captain?
- Yes (93%, 1,578 Votes)
- Not Sure (4%, 75 Votes)
- No (3%, 53 Votes)
Total Voters: 1,705
And when we watched the Newcastle matches last season, it was easy to see his influence on the side, not only by the calm way he carried out his duties at the back, but when there was a free kick or a corner, Fab was the one making sure everybody was covered.
He shows a different kind of leadership to Kevin Nolan, it’s calmer and quieter, but it is very effective, and Colo will go down as one of the best defenders to have played for Newcastle.
Newcastle over-achieved big time last season, and we are hoping not many (zero?) of our top players leave this summer, and then we can pick up next season, where we left off last season, and challenge for a top four position.
That’s our hope in any case.
