As you may know, Charlie Crowe was a former midfield player for Newcastle United, and he played for Newcastle from 1944 through 1956.
Charlie was a wing half (right half) and he was born and bred in Newcastle, and he happened to be a good friend of one of my Uncles, and they first met at the Byker Youth Club, and my Uncle as a decent enough inside right in his day.
Charlie developed Alzheimer’s disease in his later life, and passed away in 2010 in North Shields, at the age of 85.
My own mother also passed away with the same disease a few years ago.
Before Charlie’s death an appeal was set up in his name, to raise funds for a new MRI scanner (it costs £1.5M) to be installed at the Campus for Ageing and Vitality.
The Campus is on the old Newcastle General Hospital site, where my wife studied to become a Royal Nurse way back in the late 1960s.
The Campus will be used exclusively for diagnosis and research into dementia.
Charlie Crowe – in action for Newcastle United
I have been asked to publicize the appeal, and I am very willing to do that, especially when they are backed by former managers and players of Newcastle United.
We know times are hard economically, but if you can manage to donate, you can do so so here.
And here is the web-site of the Charlie Crowe Scanner Appeal.
Many thanks.
