Newcastle Linked With English U21 Striker

News in the Daily Mirror today that Newcastle are in a race to sign a young English striker.

Jay Rodriguez – Newcastle interested in 22 year-old striker?

The striker is Burnley’s Jay Rodriguez, an this is not the first time we have been linked with this player.

The 22 year-old has played for the first team of  his local club since 2007, but he first joined Burnley way back in 2000 when he was just 9 years old.

The news is that Burnley are looking for 8M for their youngster – and that’s good money if you can get it.

Jay has played just once for the England Under-21 side, and he can also play out on the wing.

But that seems a high fee for a young player who is unproven at the top level, and we cannot  believe Newcastle would be interested in unloading £8M for this player.

Jay is of Spanish descent and has played 128 times for Burnley with 41 goals, and last season he hit 21 goals in 42 first team appearances.

If you are to believe the news then Southampton are keen on the lad, and Cardiff  City have already made a £5.5M bid for the striker, and it looks like Norwich and Fulham are other clubs also interested.

We don’t think Newcastle will pay anywhere near that price for a 22 year-old English striker.

But there again we could be wrong. 😀

What do you think?

So this guy is worth £1m less than Cisse? No thanks. If we sign a striker I hope it’s Luuk De Jong

We keep being linked to Rodriguez which makes me think there’s genuine interest. No way we pay £8m, but I seriously doubt that’s Burnley’s actual asking price. If the choice is between him and De Jong for a similar price tag then I think De Jong is the obvious choice, but I’d be surprised if there wasn’t interest in him from elsewhere…

    Canny impressive,
I think, Most fans expectations now are that we can get such players on a free at the click of a finger, Whilst Mr Carr’s at work.
This time 4 years ago, i probably thought 5.5 million would be money well spent..as for right now, im not sure wether it would be

Pardew refuses to pay over the odds for crap players, because they are English.

The player I want is Auxere’s Alain Traore. I think he’d be a great fit on the left. We were linked with him last fall. He’s 23, relatively cheap & his club got relegated to Ligue 2. I’m surprised the rumors haven’t started back up.

He has always seemed too talented for the championship when I’ve seen him, but I just don’t think he could compete with Cisse, Ba + Ben Arfa (hoping we play 4-3-3 permanently now) at the moment. Though does seem a good one to play wide in a front 3 as he’s more an all round player than a poacher.

    ~4m at most though.

I can’t wait for the day when 5hitteh’s money runs out and all the players abandon ship. I bet barely a handful of the players really care for their club.

Now these are the sort of positive things we should hear from our manager, rather than 5th place next season is impossible.

Seems to me Mr T doesnt think its impossible, in fact he wants to do more. Come on Pards stop being a negger and push on.

Thanks for article, Check. AP has said lots of good stuff, but, like anyone talking too much, he sometimes puts his foot in it. Talking about ‘educating fans’ is condescending to say the least. Being afraid of bottling it is understandable, he should ‘ve just said that. What a negative message to give players, the world, that what we did was a fluke.

I dont get that logic. Is that how you use your own money as well or is it just other people’s money? 😉

Jay is a raw talent and for 5 or 6 mil you can easily get a proven talent.

Nothing special about this lad. Would pay maybe 3mil and some of that would be pervormance based at best. Rather take a chance with some foreign cheaper import which wuld be as much as a gamble than this lad making it in the prem

Like chopra to me good championship player , my opinion he will never be a premiership quality

jesper – yes i am a little care free with my own cash, and would like Ashley to be a little more carefree with his.

If this lad is good and other teams are willing to pay 5 million then that is his worth, ala Shane Long, personally wud sooner have this lad than Long, has great potential and has proved he is really good in the championship, have a look and tell me if Danny Graham, Shane Long and Grant Holt have moved up a division comfortably.

This kid has more to his game than all of them, go out and buy him if he is 5 million its cool with me, hardly breaking the bank. Swansea have just spent 7 million on Siggurdsson.

All of a sudden people feel that if we spend more than 4million euros on a player then we may become an unsustainable business model, who are we fcuking Middlesbrough/Cardiff/Portsmouth, people need to just keep it real. We ARE a big club, leave the business model to Derek the scrooge.

JFA – thats us knackered then, when Southampton outbid us, am i the only one who is a little annoyed at our relentless pursuit of cheaper options. If its free we’ll have it.

Think i might be going a little overboard, however i think it is starting to cloud peoples judgement on what is a good buy, and what is a waste of money.

We have all now been brainwashed into thinking that the club cant pay over 8 million pounds for a player, if we do then we will go into financial metdown, personally dont think thats anywere close to the truth.

JFA…any idea how much they’ve offered?

I’ve not seen much on this lad, but heard promising things. As Check mentioned, it’s a similar situation to Shane Long and it looks like he would of been worth taking the gamble on…..however, not every “gamble” will pay off. I have faith we’ll be bringing in a good quality young striker and that he will do us proud.

Check – I’m 50/50 on that comment (big shocker, I know).

Whilst the club have made it clear they will always be looking for great deals (freebies and injuries etc) for young, exciting players with room to grow at the club, they HAVE also shown, that when the right player comes along, they will do what is needed to secure them. Not sure which player is was again, but we signed him in January and he scores when he wants 🙂

We need quite a few players, including youth, so costs will need to be kept down. However, I do understand why you find it frustrating when it seems a team, like Southampton, can offer better deals etc to players. I don’t think that’s the full story though, we can, but only for the right player, once they’ve proved themselves.

    Just noticed the “INS” section.

Ed, very funny, but you may give some poor bloke a heart attack. Granted, if he believed it for a single second it may be deserved, but still.

Also, a little request. Seeing as we didn’t get to see the mighty Cisse in the “IN” column last season, can we have him in now?

I can’t think of many Championship strikers who move up and set the Premier League on fire.

He seems to have a hefty price tag on his head when you compare to Cisse.

I’m sure our scouts will have assessed his quality and value.

    I couldn’t agree more.
We all know at least one talent will leave for decent money this summer, that’s just how mikey does business.
So there’s no reason we shouldn’t gamble with the odd 6/7 million buy.

I mean, as long as we don’t start bidding like liverpool.

Trust me. I said this a few weeks so but Rodriguez is a brilliant player.

Admittedly he doesn’t score to the same ratio as Rhodes but he is a different player all together.

Rodriguez is very intelligent, a striker thats a playmaker and scores to boot.

Best comparison I can give is Sheringham, very clever boy that put next to a proven goal scorer (such as Rhodes) would get lots of assists as well as goals.

Burnley know they can’t get 8 million but I can know they probably would accept 4 million and a loan or 2 (fully paid by us and for the season).

I’d give them Vuckic and Abied and 4 million and everyone benefits.

By the way where is my birthday messages? Did y’all forget??

Newcastle could probably sign young jorden rhodes from huddersfield for less than the lad from burnley, and rhodes to me has proved himself much more the the burnley lad, so to be honest i dont think newcastle are in the slightest bit interested in the burnley lad, but its only my opinion, its very hard to know whats fiction at this time of the year. Howay the lads.
