Sky Sports News is reporting that Newcastle are planning a move for Coventry City’s young star Gael Bigirimana.
Gael Bigirimana – 18 year-old Coventry midfielder
The Burundian-born Congolese football player is 18 years old and plays in midfield, and he has so far played 26 times for Coventry with 16 starts.
Newcastle are thought to be bringing in a number of top young players this summer, to build up their Development squad, so this report could well be accurate.
As many as 12 current Development players are leaving the club when their contracts expire at the end of June, and Newcastle have already had some top young players on trial on Tyneside.
The 18 year-old is very highly rated, but Coventry manager Andy Thorn is desperate to keep City’s talented youngsters together, as he hopes to bring the club straight back up to the Championship next season.
Coventry were relegated last season, when they finished second bottom of the Championship with 40 points.
But it appears the Magpies are keen on the youngster, who won the Championship’s Apprentice of the Year award for last season, and he beat Crystal Palace’s Jonathan Williams and Reading’s Jordan Obita for the award.
The same award was won by Ipswich striker Connor Newton in the previous year – with Connor now on Sunderland’s books.
This report could well be true, and it will depend on whether Newcastle can agree a suitable fee with Coventry for the player.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Bit slow on uptake today Ed but definitely the type of young player we need at such a young age he has already proven himself to be a very adept player. Lots of Cov fans seem very upset if they lose him.

JFA,
Just to clear something I had written on an earlier post which seemed to cause a debate about supporting England. First of all I’m not English. If I were then I would support them no matter what.
Being that I’m not English is why I said I’ll be supporting the Newcastle players and the French team.
Not everybody who supports Newcastle or reads this blog is English.
As far as England goes, Hodgson has made some terrible choices. Downing/Kelly/Carroll/Terry just aren’t good enough IMO. For me it should have been Sinclair/Sturridge/Richards/Ferdinand

Any Englishman claiming to ‘support’ another country is just talking rubbish anyway.
It’s just them trying to guard themselves against failure.
If England won an international tournament one day, I’d love to see them saying ‘Well, I don’t care anyway. I support France, because they have two Newcastle players’. Nonsense, they’d be celebrating with everybody else!
48 SupaToonKid // May 28, 2012 at 3:56 PM
FatmanJoe
Apparently we’re looking to put in a £5M bid for Mathieu Debuchy after watching him last night for France. Lille though want closer to £8M however they know out of the teams interested only Fenerbache and Galatasaray can afford that so they’ll maybe meet us halfway at £6.5M as Debuchy wants to move to a better league and not make a backwards move to Turkey. I just hope we get him signed up before the Euros and somebody like Man Utd or Real Madrid (both need RBs) come swooping in as he will likely impress at the Euros as he did last night vs Iceland.
49 ToonDownSouth // May 28, 2012 at 3:57 PM

I’d be very very surprised if we’re remotely interested in any of the midfielders that have been mentioned.
I’d imagine it’s more a case of agents using our name to drum up interest, because we’ve had such a good season in the transfer market that other clubs will take notice of our targets.

I looked at transfer rumours from 1 year ago. Of the rumours that definitively stated the X player was set to join X team, only 1/3rd of these turned out to be true.
The rumours of stated player ‘interest’ from clubs are obviously far, far less likely to sign.
I think we’ll be linked with varying players from all sorts of strange, magical lands. I think this is how the transfer game is played.

I’ll call Barry’s agent and send you some candles in the post mate.
But even me as your loyal ally am a bit mythed by your attitude towards Debuchy as out of some players we’ve been linked to he seems very realistic and remember Pardew did say in his interview that we were working to bring in a mate of Cabaye’s. Cabaye has 5 best mates and two of them are here in Ba & Ben Arfa, the other 3 are Debuchy, Hazard & Rio Mavuba; we’re not going to sign Hazard as he’s so expensive and destined for City, Man U or Chelski and Mavuba is too old and plays like Tioté so really Debuchy looks like who Pards was talking about he definitely looks like the best RB we could get for a reasonable fee. Keep the Faith. Project Pardew will Deliver!

77 LGFUAD21 // May 28, 2012 at 5:18 PM
On the international front.
As I said before. I’m Welsh but I always support England in international tournaments. After all I have lived here for a long time. But at the same time I watch international tournaments for pure spectacle so I dont get too upset over results.
I will be following England this year as well as France.
Not because France have 2 of our boys. But because I have always keenly watched them since about 1998 (my favourite World Cup, probably because I was in France while it was happening). I also see them as kinda underdogs that I think will come out swinging.
Therefore I’ll be hoping both teams win their respective games. When it comes to France v England I will be hoping for an England win obviously but I wont be throwing bottles at the TV if they are beaten fair and square.
Think its safe to say that unless both teams have a sh!tter they wont be each others downfall in the tournement. Unless both make the final that is.
I do still think there are some poor inclusions in the England squad. Don’t understand why Holt hasnt gone, or Johnson, but Barry WAS supposed to go.
And now if Phil Jones is going to be our Defensive Mid, we’d be better off with Perchino I think, or even Rodwell.
At least if Hodgson had gone for a younger team of unproven players he would be able to lay foundations for the future rather than the same team that has been disappointing us for years. With a few distinctly average additions

81 ToonDownSouth // May 28, 2012 at 5:42 PM

That’s ridiculous. Manchester City fans all rate the guy really highly, which should tell you enough.
Just because he doesn’t run around like a headless fcuking chicken – Scott Parker – or constantly bomb forward at the expense of any kind of tactical setup – Steven Gerrard.
He very rarely loses the ball, he’s tactically excellent and intelligent, and he controls the pace of the game.
There’s a reason Capello and Mancini rate the guy so highly, and it’s not because he’s average.
82 ochytoon // May 28, 2012 at 5:51 PM

A lot of people don’t rate Barry because he’s so quiet in games but if you watch he does all the simple things right in almost every match. and tds is right Barry rarely loses the ball.

However, me personally, I’ve never seen what the fuss is about. In fact, he always seems to make terrible decisions and plays some really negative football. Although, i can’t say I’ve made too much of an effort to watch him.

Gareth Barry for me is a defender playing midfield, and in all honestly think he doesnt do it great, you are almost playing 5 at the back when he plays, if the manager wants to setup like that then fair enough, but personally i like my defensive midfielders to offer a bit more, if he is put under pressure he gives the ball away, all to often in an england shirt.
Personally i could play the role he plays at city, its hardly difficult, he has been out of his depth internationally for years, one paced and no energy for me, grossly dislike him playing for our national side, pleased hes injured, sick of watching the same old failed players.
90 Troleibusiukas_LTU // May 28, 2012 at 6:08 PM

I must say I agree with you on Barry. He is very average. And I don think he would play at the level he does if he was right footed.
Toon down south
As for saying Gerrard bombs forward without any thought about tactics that’s ridiculous. Whoever is his manager has him in the team to do that. Gerrard is the most complete cm in the world. Most cms specialise in one of attacking or defending where as Gerrard can easily play as the holding cm if asked but he rarely is and he is used as the midfielder who goes to support attacks. As for Barry hardly losing the ball. Anyone on this forum would be able to retain position if 90% of their passes were 5 yards backwards to kompany or lescott
93 Troleibusiukas_LTU // May 28, 2012 at 6:11 PM

When has Gerrard ever shown he would be able to sit in a holding role? Arrigo Sacchi – probably the greatest manager of the last 50 years – once described Gerrard as a player with all the talent in the world, but absolutely no understanding of the game.
If we’re talking about complete midfielders, I’d probably say Alonso at Madrid. De Rossi is fantastic in every respect as well, and a few years ago Pirlo would have been my answer.
120 gfp13 // May 28, 2012 at 6:52 PM
Fabregas xavi and iniesta all questioned about their defensive abilities and also David silva? He’s great with the ball but again defensively questionable. Wilshere too. Cabaye is not as good as Gerrard as much as I like cabaye. Schweinsteiger is a good argument I agree with him being a really good cm player but I still stand by Gerrard being a better and more complete cm
121 ToonDownSouth // May 28, 2012 at 6:53 PM
Ooo, completely forgot about Schweinstager (spelling?)
122 ochytoon // May 28, 2012 at 6:53 PM
Alonso! That was the fella I was Trying to think of.
123 gfp13 // May 28, 2012 at 6:56 PM
A few years ago? We are talking about the present. Alonso is actually my favourite player and has the best range of passing but lacks the ability of going forward and has also been questioned defensively. De Rossi is mainly a defensive midfielder and specialising in that position.
Gerrard has played defensive positions numerous times over his career including full back positions so to say he isn’t defensive isn’t a viable argument IMO
124 gfp13 // May 28, 2012 at 6:57 PM
Also arrigo said that he had all the ability in the world? Does that not make him complete? If he was not complete he would not have ‘all the ability in the world’
125 ToonDownSouth // May 28, 2012 at 7:00 PM
You questioned my original comment about Gerrard lacking tactical nouse.
Come on… don’t just take half my quote.
And one good half hour at RB does not mean he’s profficient there! Christ, Perch is handy in about 6 positions every now and again!
126 bollance // May 28, 2012 at 7:01 PM
Hulk to chelsea getting closer. Didn’t rate him against man U in the away leg I think it was. Obviously he is highly regarded and scores lots of goals but he gave the ball away countless times which meant man U were back on the attack again.
127 ToonDownSouth // May 28, 2012 at 7:06 PM
And I’m sorry, but if we’re talking about the present, Gerrard isn’t even that good anymore! He’s been poor for 2 seasons now, and is constantly crocked by injuries.
Also, if you don’t understand how a player can have talent, but not the brain to match it, then there’s no point in this conversation..
128 check the toastie // May 28, 2012 at 7:06 PM
Gerrard has carried a football club and saved many managers jobs all through his career, are we now trying to say Gareth Barry functions better within an England team than Gerrard.
The Boy Gerrard is in the twighlight of his career but is still the most important footballer on liverpools books, and i tell you what Man Utd Chelsea and Man City would have him 2moro if they could, he is class.
Maybe he does at times get in front of the ball leaving holes, however that is his job, to create things. doh….
129 gfp13 // May 28, 2012 at 7:07 PM
He also contradicts himself in saying he has all the ability in the world but no understanding of the game. Surely if he had all the ability he would understand the game.
To play cm alone you need tactical knowledge at any level and he does it at international level. The players you used in your argument aren’t even complete midfielders they specialised in certain areas of midfield so your knowledge of the game is questionable too
130 gfp13 // May 28, 2012 at 7:09 PM
Players can have talent but not enough brain to match yes I know that. But like I said to have all of the ability in the world that must also include having the brain too otherwise he would lack ability

Stop being a mug. A player can have all the ability but no footballing brain ala Theo Walcott. I trust TDS’ opinion and believe he is correct in what he is saying. Gerrard has been good in a poor team. He is a great midfielder but there are many better out there. Fabregas can both attack and defend. I would say the same for Xavi.

134 LGFUAD21 // May 28, 2012 at 7:13 PM
Barry puts in a decent enough shift at City but some people have made the points I have on him already.
He has consistently underwhelmed on an international stage and I personally just dont think it is what we need in the middle of the park.
Someone made an excellent point about him being favoured by the italians and the italian style of play. Which would be fine if an england squad could pull it off but we cant.
I know he isnt fit but if he were I’d have Wilshere over Barry any day of the week. He is able to offer so much more. I’d even consider Joey had he played like last season and if he weren’t Joey.
My view is just that the same formula isnt working so why are we persisting on it.
I think Gerrard deserves his spot and captaincy. But he needs to be used as an AM. Especially because England will probably have to rely on him for goals with Rooney out. I can understand Defoe’s inclusion to some extent (to have an experienced striker their) but Carroll and Welbeck??? That decision clearly hasnt been made based on form at all.
Not to be a debbie downer but I think England are destined for another failure.

138 gfp13 // May 28, 2012 at 7:18 PM
Theo has all the ability? He most certainly doesn’t. He, like obertan, is a sprinter and that is what they are. They have very little ability tbh. Walcott has a bit but not enough. He could easily have been watching the euros on itv this summer too.
Xavi and fabregas have both been questioned for their defensive capabilities for years. They are average at defending compared to a lot of centre mids, Gerrard included. Going forward they are good and I can’t deny that because they are world class players. Playing in the team they do means they rarely get exposed to their defensive lacks but they are exceptional ball players

I know for a fact that Theo was scouted at a young age purely because he was (and still is) insanely fast. You are right in that he is far from a complete player (I even likened Obertan to a young Walcott earlier in the year) but Wenger is slowly managing to bring him up to speed. His main fault is that he has often lacked an ability to either cross or score. But ask any Gooner and they;ll tell you he has improved over the past 2 seasons.
I actually think Obertan has more ability that Walcott does but absolutely no understanding of the game. He has the tools but doesnt make the right calls.
On Sigurdsson. Well done Swansea. think that will be a coup. Given that rumours couple of weeks ago were that he’d cost a few more mil than that.
149 gfp13 // May 28, 2012 at 7:33 PM

The problem is in defending Barry TDS thought it was fair game to criticise Gerrard, for me the two players are poles apart in ability and talent and shouldnt be put in the same paragraph, who gives a fcuk what Arrigo Sacchi once said, probably best to base an opinion on what you actually see yourself and Gerrard is an absolute legend for his club in a way Shearer is to us, and probably Drogba is to TDS’s team Chelsea, the luckiest team in the history of the champions league.

Agree again. It would take something real special for me to be convinced too.
Unfortunately the England squad does highlight a distinct lack of English talent. Especially around that mid 20s age mark.
We do have some promising youngsters though. Just hope they can reach their potential but the League, while entertaining, also sadly restricts homegrown talent to some extent.
England really needs to set up some kind of centre for excellence like Clairfontaine (I know there are plans) Just look at some of the players that have come out of there. And there are something like 10 such academies in France.

Nufc on the other hand will probably spend a maximum of fifteen million in the summer in comparison to Man city’s hundred million and Chelsea more of less the same.
