Newcastle tracked Kevin Gameiro last summer, but the striker eventually moved from Lorient to PSG for €11M.
Kevin Gameiro – PSG striker
That’s about £8.8M in today exchange rate, but Kevin has had a poor season in Paris.
After scoring 24 goals in 41 appearances for Lorient in the previous season, he notched just 11 goals in 30 appearances for a side that finished second top of the French league, but he was not a starter for the club.
Gameiro agreed to a four-year contract at PSG, and Newcastle even offered 10M for the striker early last summer, but basically he wanted to remain in France.
Gameiro has not had a good season, and he has not been able to hold down his place as a starter at the Paris club, and add to that the fact he has fallen out with coach Carlo Ancelotti, and Kevin’s career over the last year has not exactly gone according to plan.
Indeed the news is that Carlo has contacted Gameiro’s agents, and told them to look for a new club for their player.
PSG have contacted Newcastle to see if they are still interested in the player, who has 8 French caps, but is not in Laurent Blanc’s squad for the Euro 2012 Championships.
And while Newcastle are looking to bring in a young striker to challenge Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse and Shola Ameobi for a striker position next season, players like 21 year-old Dutch International Luuk de Jong of FC Twente are better bargains than Kevin.
And Newcastle may become interested if Demba Ba elects to leave Newcastle in the summer, but we cannot see Newcastle even wanting to bring Gameiro to Tyneside now, after what happened last summer, when there were tortuous negotiations going on for him for many weeks.
The 25 year-old Gameiro had his chance last year to join Newcastle, but he didn’t want to come.
That seems to be the last chance he will get.
