Newcastle United are in 20th place in the top 30 football clubs based on the estimated value of their brand or name.

The rankings are put together by Brand-Finance, which is the world’s leading brand valuation consultancy firm.
Brand-Finance have estimated the brand value of various football clubs around the world, and they have also given each brand a rating.
Manchester United are top of the list with a brand value estimated at $853M and a brand rating of AAA+.
In contrast, Newcastle are in 20th place with a brand value $86M and a brand rating of BB, and we were not even in the top 30 in 2011 – so we are moving back up.
However, back in 2010 we were listed in 23rd place with a brand value of $63M and a brand rating of BB+, so since 2010 we’ve at least gone up by around $23M in brand value.
When Mike Ashley bought Newcastle five years ago, he talked about increasing the brand awareness around the world of Newcastle United.
In 2009, when we were relegated, we are were in 17th place, so the good news is that we are getting back into being among the top football clubs, and we would expect next year both our brand value and brand rating would improve.
In this year’s table Real Madrid have dropped from second place to third place, and Bayern Munich have moved up to second place, with a brand value of $786M and an AAA rating.
Barcelona have dropped from 3rd place to 4th place.
Brand value is important in that it measures the perceived value of a football club, and how important the therefore is world-wide.
And since one of the major reasons buyers didn’t come flocking to buy Newcastle United when it was put up for sale three years ago, was a low world-wide brand name, moving up this table in the coming years will see Newcastle be better known around the world.
That sounds good.
In the list there are 12 English clubs, 4 German clubs, 3 Italian clubs, two each from France and Spain, and one from Holland.
Here is the table for 2012, and you can see the full details with last year’s placings and the like HERE.
| Position | Football Club | Brand Value - $M | Brand - Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Manchester United | 853 | AAA+ |
| 2 | Bayern Munich | 786 | AAA |
| 3 | Real Madrid | 600 | AAA+ |
| 4 | Barcelona | 580 | AAA+ |
| 5 | Chelsea | 398 | AA- |
| 6 | Arsenal | 388 | AA- |
| 7 | Liverpool | 367 | AA- |
| 8 | Manchester City | 302 | BBB+ |
| 9 | AC Milan | 292 | AA+ |
| 10 | Schalke 04 | 266 | BBB+ |
| 11 | Borrussia Dortmund | 227 | A |
| 12 | Tottenham | 226 | BBB |
| 13 | Inter-Milan | 215 | AA+ |
| 14 | Ajax | 184 | A+ |
| 15 | Marseilles | 168 | A+ |
| 16 | Juventus | 160 | BBB+ |
| 17 | Hamburg | 153 | BBB |
| 18 | Lyon | 120 | BBB |
| 19 | Aston Villa | 87 | BBB- |
| 20 | Newcastle United | 86 | BB |
Comments always welcome.

Bloomin’ Aston Villa? How are they on there? Have I missed something?

Villa are still reaping the rewards of having that midfield maestro Lee Hendrie in their team, who could forget him!? A cut above.
6 Beardo // May 30, 2012 at 5:27 PM
He’s been gone nearly a decade and yet the football world has yet to recover to the same class. Kids from Botswana, to Indonesi, to Colombia, all round the globe kids wanted to be Lee Hendrie!

Yeah Villa seems a funny one. I dont think anyone would go to Villa because it’s a famous, big or well known club. I mean they are those things but not when compared to most of that others on that list.

11 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // May 30, 2012 at 5:36 PM
I suppose until recently, they were a bit of an “everton” type team, that were constantly knocking on the big boys door. But to be on this list i do find baffling…..I’m almost shocked we’re on it tbh.
Look forward to climbing up this table as well as the Premier League over the coming seasons!

14 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // May 30, 2012 at 5:43 PM
Beardo…That would all depend. The only information I have is that you want to pretend to be Peter Beardsley, who lets face it, couldn’t get a job modelling for the Sunderland Fans Association. Am I to assume in reality you’re less or more attractive than the great man that is Peter Beardsley?
15 only magpie of nepal // May 30, 2012 at 5:44 PM
Man City alone have spent more than $300m in squad and club development since 2008 and yet their brand value is just $302m. lol
16 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // May 30, 2012 at 5:51 PM
It would be interesting to see where Man City were on the list before all of their big expenditure. I would think their world branding will only increase over the years…already seeing more light blue tops, I suppose it makes a change from the constant sea of red ones
17 Toon1978 // May 30, 2012 at 5:55 PM
See Spurs have been linked to Ba and Krul again. Redknapp might as well take Tiote and Cabaye while he is there. When Modric and Bale where linked with moves he b1tched like a big spoilt brat. Hopefully he gets a taste of his own medicine when CL clubs come in for Bale, VDV and Modric.
18 Beattie25 // May 30, 2012 at 5:56 PM
Surely Leeds, Forrest, Burnley, Celtic, Rangers, Athletico Madrid, Valencia, PSG, PSV, CSKA Moscow, LA Galaxy and a lot more to boot are bigger brands than Villa.
All though saying that I know they have sold a lot of Heskey 10 shirts in Outer Mongolia.

22 Beardo // May 30, 2012 at 6:04 PM
I’m deeply offended that you’re still not convinced I’m Peter Beardsley, and the sorrow you have caused with your ‘couldn’t get a job modelling for Sunderland Fans Association’ is irreversible.
I’m distraught now you meanie!

Beardsley has many wonderful talents, modelling is not one of them and I’m sure he’s well aware of it.

Aston Villa? Not sure about that. Agree with the rest though. Overall good news for us. Playing in the Europa League will only serve to improve our reputation around the world as well. My tip for the euros is france also, and although i will be willing them to do well, i will quite happily support england with pride
with debuchy, a follower of mine on twitter, he recently said
Pour l’instant, je me prépare à l’Euro et je laisse mes agents gérer tout ça. Si je reste à Lille, je serai content aussi.» M.Debuchy
roughly translated, means at the moment im preparing for the euros, i will let my agents manage all of that (potential transfers), if i stay at lille i will be happy aswell

Brennan rodgers will need time to build a team. Out of The current players aroun 4-5 will still be in the first team if he’s given 3 seasons. Gerrard and suarez will probably be the first two names on his team sheet. They are the ones i see as able to move right into his style of play.

I’ve been following this @Agent_ITK fella on twitter for a month now, and i’ll be damned, he’s getting allot of rights.
If u want some rumour banter on twitter, i can recommend him. Comes off as a arrogant twat sometimes, but i just read, don’t tweet at him.
So if u want someone getting your hopes up, there u go
He’s still adamant on Bas Dost to us, but ofc, he does get wrongs to, then makes silly excuses, like all other ITKs.

But it seems that top French players more or less never move to Spurs; not from France though.
And Wenger being France that was just too easy…
Lazy Journos if you ask me.
And honestly what has Spurs going for them other than they are a London club – seems to be there only but very effective pulling power.

Should have said Wenger being French
118 Dannyo // May 30, 2012 at 9:50 PM
Rodgers is a young manager, he’s still learning, which makes him potentially a good one.
However, i too am of the same thought that what happened at Swans is largly due to Martinez foundation and Rodgers enjoyment of the philosophy.
Personally, i think he’ll struggle at Liverpool.

We should sign Nathan Redmond
120 cadete // May 30, 2012 at 9:53 PM
Rodgers will flop I know if he was to come to us I would be gutted I think lambert is a way better manager real quality and a champions league winner himself, Swansea played the barca way but If u don’t have messi I don’t think there is an end product plus most teams know how to defend against that style now. Look at our game against them they had like 80% possession no real chances and we beat them they just never looked like scoring, that is all

@Tooon, cos he has a rolling 5 year deal (so I am told anyway), so the compo would be massive. Besides, for some reason the football world still seems to believe AP has just been lucky, rather than good. I hope next year he proves them all wrong. Best manager at managing the fans expectations I have ever known. In my life the rank of faves is Bobby, KK (of Keegan type… I know, I know, but people still talk about the football we played under him), and then either AP or Hoots. I would love AP to move up that list, but lets face it, number 1 and 2 are hard acts to follow.

Ba should be Cisse back up. Not a left winger by any chance. But I doubt he’ll want to sit on the bench and I expect him to leave for 7million. We use the money to tie free transfer hoilett to a 5 yr contract and agent fee. 7million well spent.

Ba reputed to be leaving and fans here passively dismissing him! I understand the reasoning, as he went off the boil after Cisse’s arrival and his incredible goals. However: we absolutely can’t maintain our position with just one +10 goals forward. Also, forwards in the 20 +- neighbourhood are as rare as Cypriot skiers and British sky-jumpers. This ‘he doesn’t fit in a 4-3-3′ or whatever just isn’t true. Good teams, in any case, need a deep team=squad, in order to mix it up a bit. Remember, AP outrageously couldn’t find a place for his most talented player until 6 games before the end! What AP has to do is form a system that fits the players, not the other way around.

Found a nice article highlighting our squad weaknesses for the last season.
http://www.eplindex.com/14847/newcastle-united-201112-statistical-weaknesses.html
Go through if not seen already. Key points I felt was lack of left-footed players (who can shoot the target, except Hatem of course), lack of possession football, and lack of wingers who can cross regularly. Way say lads??
207 graham cwarr // May 31, 2012 at 8:09 AM
Ba still plays well in a 4-3-3 agreed. He will be a miss agreed. But if he’s in the business of club hopping and getting millions out of his transfer fees then so be it. If he leaves so be it. If the reports about his transfer fee are true then we can’t stop it.
If ba stays good on him. Ill be happy. All i was saying is that if he does leave we can’t be all doom and gloom. We’ll need to get a couple of understudies for cisse and get somebody playing on that left wing.
208 graham cwarr // May 31, 2012 at 8:14 AM
@raj while possession can be important sometimes it means nothing. You could have 90% possession across the 90 minutes but if its all in your own half what’s the point.
We had quite a few games last season where we dominated possession but looked shaky. O the flip side of the coin we had games where we had much less possession and won 2-0 or whatever.

Morning graham cwarr
Just so you didnt feel all alone.
Just checked some other teams blogs and Chelski bloggers rate them picking up Ba to play understudy to Torres !!! while sending Lukaku out on loan !!! Ba score dmore premier league goals than Torres and Drogba together last season…and they want Ba as BACK UP.!!!!
If Ba leaves due to the contract get out so be it.
We need a Left winger who can cross
If we could get Adam Johnson in on wages that wont p-ss off the rest of the team and we play 4 3 3 with hatem Cisse and Johnson preferred front 3 and have someone like De jong as replacement for Cisse during ACON and God forbid injury, I reckon we could really have a go at a cup competition and consolidate a top 6 place this season.
Any comments?
213 Raj // May 31, 2012 at 8:31 AM
If we are going to play 4-3-3 entire season, we need good crossing wingers. However, i would prefer someone with more cutting and shooting like Hatem on the left wing as well. We also had very low shooting last season as per the article.
As the Entertainers, i prefer an attacking third ahead, rather than crossing English football. Drab for me, well don’t kill me on that
214 Raj // May 31, 2012 at 8:35 AM
Johnson would be ideal, but improbable for NUFC culture of getting players. Great that Pards signed Cisse, they would have seen this coming long back. Now again we are need of strikers and attacking midfielders. 60+ games, ACON, Europe.. We need more out of our lot, sign back-ups and cross our fingers for injuries to our top 4 – Cisse,HBA,Yohan and Cheik.
