News in the Daily Telegraph today that Tottenham Hotspur are readying a £7M bid for Newcastle striker Demba Ba.
Demba Ba – Tottenham linked with striker
That’s how much is supposed to be the release clause in his contract at Newcastle, which Harry Redknapp let the world know last January.
Newcastle are said to be in negotiations with Ba’s agents on a new contract, while the striker is off on holiday – but if a big club comes in with an offer for the player, he could leave Newcastle this summer.
The Senegal striker had scored 16 goals by mid February for Newcastle, which had propelled Newcastle into a top six position in the league table, but then Demba went off the boil, as his Senegal team mate came in and scored 13 goals in 14 appearances for Newcastle.
If there is a release clause in Ba’s contract, and Alan Pardew has said there is some truth in that, then we would expect at least one club to come in with a bid over the summer, and then we suppose it would then be up to the player.
There is some debate as to whether Newcastle are willing to offer Ba a new deal, as there was news last week that they were not willing to do that, and yet Ba himself over the weekend via his Twitter account, said his guys were talking to Newcastle.
So as far as that goes – take your choice.
This is not really new news on Ba, other than this time it’s Spurs who are said to be the club who are interested, but of course Demba Ba would still have to pass a medical at the new club.
And presumably he could fail it – as he did at Stoke a year last January – and if the club are willing to give Ba a long deal at high wages – that could be a huge financial risk for any club coming in for the player.
But we expect this kind of speculation on Ba to go on until either he signs a new deal at Newcastle, or until another club matches the release clause in his contract.
It would be nice to sort this one out quickly – since there are still three long months to go in the transfer window – but this thing could drag on a bit yet – unfortunately for Newcastle fans.
What do you think?

Comment #4What a shock! ‘Arry ‘my face is a melted wellie’ Redknapp has been looking at him for ages – I would seriously tell him to piss off – or even look at a swap deal Ba for Danny Rose and Harry Kane (looked red hot for Milwall last season and only 18).

Comment #8out of toon, I understand the money side yes but to Spurs would be a move sideways imo and not forward for him. If he went to a CL team then that’s understandable but we’re in a similar position to Spurs atm.
If a player wants to leave after a year (or less) then so be it, nothing we can do except try and replace with a suitable player.

Comment #11A little boy was doing his maths homework.
He said to himself, “Two plus five, the son of a b!tch is seven.
Three plus six, the son of a b!tch is nine…”
His mother heard what he was saying and gasped, “What are you doing?”
The little boy answered, “I’m doing my maths homework, Mom.”
” And this is how your teacher taught you to do it?” the mother asked.
“Yes,” he answered.
Infuriated, the mother asked the teacher the next day, “What are you teaching my son in maths?”
The teacher replied, “Right now, we are learning addition.”
The mother asked, “And are you teaching them to say two plus two, the Son Of a b!tch is four?”
After the teacher stopped laughing, she answered,
“What I taught them was, two plus two, THE SUM OF WHICH, is four.”

Comment #14Don’t want to get into the whole were not poor debate, but how can Spurs be in a better position to offer Demba Ba more wages than us bar a run in the CL two seasons ago, their wage bill must be alot higher, and gate receipts and shirt sales cant be anywhere near us,and surely that CL money they recieved must have gone on VandVrt and Abedeyors wages.

Comment #16Wasn’t the other part of Ba’s release clause that was ‘let out’ by Floppygob, that only a CL teams could activate the ‘release clause’ in his contract???
If thats the case, Floppybog must have forgotten that they’re no longer in the CL even tho they finished 4th due to Chelski winning it 🙂 lol
Or does he think that he can get around it by virtue of finishing 4th in the PL or summit??
Personally I think Ba will stay & him & Cisse will alternate up top in the League, Cups & Europa League this season, giving us double the fire power, becauise as was shown at the start of last season, Ba & Best teamed up well until best got injured, so we could play 4-4-2 in Europe with Ba & Best up top, then switch to a 4-3-3 system with HBA, Cisse & Marvauex up top…. just need to get a RB,CB & LB in this summer imo 🙂

Comment #17Good article. Happy memories. Especially Jose ending up in goal and Carroll gliding gracefully to the dressing room. Best game of the season for me.
On demba – why would he go there? Even the fans see the descent. Missing out on cl will see all their best players turning heads. They have some ageing players who they’ll fail to replace with quality and I’m sure old floppy chops will move if a big bung offer comes from elsewhere. If demba feels like that’s a ship worth jumping to then maybe we’re better off without!

Comment #18I truly can’t stand redknapp !!! Clearly unsettling Demba was his plan all along. However I do agree that I don’t think Ba will leave unless a big offer from a CL club comes in. Saying that…I still don’t believe he will leave for another prem club.
Anybody see the report regarding the manc’s wanting Cissé? Laziest journalism I’ve ever seen! No quotes, no sources, nothing!!!

Comment #19I saw that. Couldn’t believe it. An article of crap. Nice to have that feeling though, rather than being worried – our number 9 being linked with better clubs and I just shrugged my shoulders.
They could have at least tried – an inside source, or a source close to cisse – but they couldn’t even be arsed with that!

Comment #22Fatman – Completely agree!!! Half arsed bullsh1t and nothing more! Although for the first time since SBR years its a nice feeling to know that we are heading towards our peak again and that our big names are loyal and true to thee cause! Plus should Cissé leave (albeit for a massive fee!), it’s nice to have the belief that we will find another gem via Mr Carr !!!

Comment #23Yeah Carr and his team are geniuses.
I was thinking of other teams this morning during my morning shit. I think it’s a bit sudden for them to all start copying our style of buying players. They’ve all been spending mega bucks for so long that their fans really expect it. And imagine being this new French lad we’ve just signed being a replacement for schools at united, I think he would flop under the pressure. Whereas our club is a growing progress and a good atmosphere to mature as a player.
Really proud of what we’re doing.

Comment #25I can’t really see an end to thins until Ba signs a new contract or decides to go. I’ve written a little bit about the Ba issue on my blog here:
http://www.extratimeandpensalties.com
I think for the most part Ba seems happy where he is and playing alongside Cisse but I think if a Champions League club comes in then his head will be turned. It will be a bit of a kick in the teeth if we end up losing him for £7 mil though, especially if (as reported) him and his agent pocket half of the fee.

If you read the article it also mentioss Cisse’s £7m release clause (sic). Could it be a case of too many Demba’s for a reporters little grey cell to cope with?
