Magpies Make Bid For Top Young Midfielder

10:10 am, Thursday, May 31st, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 25 Comments

Newcastle seem to be very interested in bringing Coventry City youngster Gael Bigirimana to Tyneside.

Gael Bigirimana – 18 year-old Coventry midfielder

We reported on Monday that Newcastle were interested in the top youngster,  who was voted the Championship’s Apprentice of the Year for last season.

And we had said in that report, it would now be Newcastle’s next step to agree a fee for the very talented midfielder, who was born in the Republic of Burundi in eastern Africa.

News today that Newcastle have made a bid for the player, and it’s estimated at between £500K and £1M for the youngster.

Newcastle will be bringing in a number of young players this summer to fill out their Development squad, as there has been a mini clear-out this summer, with around 12 youngsters  leaving the club when their contracts expire at the end of June.

From what we can tell,  this lad is a top young player who has already appeared 26 times for his club, and it’s not surprising that Coventry, who were relegated to League One last season,  want to keep him.

He would be a good acquisition for the future of Newcastle, if can get him to St. James’ Park.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I pity the fool who spells his name wrong.
    An understudy for Tiote perhaps?

if you say Hoilett is that good, then you are the idiot.

Lewy there’s a big BUT there. Robben got booed off by Munich fans and has been encouraged to leave. If that falls through, I hope he remembers Krul is Dutch too.

i believe this! we’re going to bring in lots of players aged 17-19 for the development squad! doubt he’ll be anywhere near the first team squad but for a couple of europa league appearances!

1st time ever post. Im a Newcastle fan who lives in Coventry and I occasionally see the odd cov game and this player is class. Definately a young Tiote and has the possibility to be even better from the few games I’ve seen.

could imagine Arjen Robben tearing it up for Man Utd to be honest! Seems like a fergie player! we’d never see him at the toon, his wages at Bayern top 100k a week and hes only 28 despite looking 50!

  • 13 rich_toonfan // May 31, 2012 at 10:22 AM

Why the nagativity around hoilett? He is a good player with bags of talent just some times makes poor decisions. A lot of very good players would struggle making the right decision when being hurried by players when they were 21.

Remember messi didn’t really have his first amazing season til he was 21/22 and look at how talented he is.

Hoilett has no where near that much ability so given another year or 2 he could become a top player for any side. Worth the chance on a free transfer as long as he isn’t wanting silly wages.

    Nufc 83

Hoilett looks good because the rest of blackburn team are sucks, that’s why they got relegated. The standard to look good isn’t that high.
Obertan played at MU and NUFC (top5), where most of the players are good world class players.
you put them in the same team, they are just the same quality, probably obertan better.

  • 15 TakingThePapiss // May 31, 2012 at 10:25 AM

Rich same goes for Benny. Pardew made him wait for his opportunity and he took it with both hands. Perhaps the same sorta treatment for Hoilett?

@ rich_toonfan – think you’ve got that wrong mate, I distinctly remember messi tearing defenders up aged 18/19! remember a really famous quote by Ronaldinho when they asked him how it felt to be the best player in the world and he said “how can i be the best player in the world, i’m not even the best player at barcelona” he was talking about a just turned 17 year old messi!

  • 17 jayphoto // May 31, 2012 at 10:30 AM

saying that, i like Hoilett, he could become a really good player, be happy if we signed him! also really impressed with our young winger shane ferguson! top potential, and sammi ameobi! Obertan has all the quality going too, just no confidence or knowledge on how to utilise his strengths!

  • 18 lewytoon // May 31, 2012 at 10:34 AM

how can hoillett stand out in a poor team? his goal against us, and he scored a screamer which curled into the top corner aswell last season were both class goals, he can do that whatever team he plays in.

  • 19 gfp13 // May 31, 2012 at 10:35 AM

Comparing hoilett to messi is a joke. Even at 14/15 Or however old messi was when ronaldinho was deemed the best player in the world the coaches at Barcelona were more in awe of messi. But like said earlier the manager needs to know when is the right time to play a player and I think it’s fair to say he was put in at the right time as he’s turned out a pretty decent player and probably the best I have ever seen play

Instead of making these small bids, lets bid 50 million for Man City owners.

  • 21 Robson Wonderland // May 31, 2012 at 10:39 AM

Comparing Hoilett to Messi is silly. But comparing him to Obertan is worse.

  • 22 Rotonda heights // May 31, 2012 at 10:39 AM

maybe that’s why you’re the only magpie in Nepal!!!

  • 23 markmac // May 31, 2012 at 12:13 PM
