Newcastle were the 25th richest club in the world over the financial year through last June 30th.
That’s based on revenues only, and the numbers are in Deloitte’s annual review of football clubs’ finances in their 2012 Football Money League.
Newcastle are in 25th place with £88M in revenue they brought in for the last financial year, and are only a couple of places above Sunderland.
Here are some interesting facts taken from the report – which is very wide ranging, and is here if you want to see some of the highlights in PDF form, or here for the full report in PDF form:
- Newcastle’s revenues were £88M, which was an increase of 69% year over year – when we were in the Championship – and that was the 8th highest of all the Premier League clubs
- Newcastle United were top of the league in terms of profitability – finishing the year more than £32M in the black, mainly due to the £35M we got up front for Andy Carroll from Liverpool
There’s no doubt the club is being well run financially by Derek Llambias and owner Mike Ashley - Premier League clubs’ net debt in June of 2011 includes £1.5B of interest-free loans from club owners (in 2010 it was £1B), mostly relating to Chelsea (£819M), Newcastle United (£277M) and Fulham(£200M)
- Sheikh Mansour’s reported equity investment into Manchester City in just four seasons has climbed to over £800M
- Figures for the 2010/2011 financial year show Premier League clubs’ revenues increased by 12% to a grand total of £2.3B
- Total wages across the Premier League rose by £201M – 14% – to a total o£ £1.6B
- The Premier League wages/revenue ratio reached an all time high of 70% but Newcastle’s was about 50% – or somewhere around that figure
- For the eighth consecutive season Chelsea (£191M) had the highest wages of any club in the Premier League, with Manchester City (£174M) next, followed by Manchester United (£153M)
Alan Switzer, the director in the sports business group at Deloitte, said wage control was very important:
“If the wages to revenue ratio is 70% or higher it’s very difficult to make an operating profit.” “In our view it is too high as a league and the clubs need to be edging back to the low 60s.”
“Every 1% that it drops should increase operating profits by £20M to £25M.” “Chelsea and Manchester City are the clubs which have recorded the biggest losses so they are the two which have the most to do.”
“And to be fair to them, they have been pretty public about needing to take action,” “A significant number of clubs around Europe have some distance to travel on the road towards compliance.”
Newcastle are continuing to put their financial house in order and when the current financial year ends at the end of next month, Newcastle will be in an even better financial position.
Newcastle were much higher up the total revenue table when Bobby Robson was managing the club, and we had revenues of around £100M, fueled by our participation in the Champions League, and the highest we ever got was 13th position – unlucky for some.
We should see if we can get higher than that over the next few years.

Well we’ve got a pretty average pool of players to choose from, so I can’t say I’d have gone with anything too different from Hodgsons choice.
It’s a shame that Walker is injured, as that would make me feel much better about that RB slot.
The same applies to Wilshere – a Parker/Wilshere midfield certainly looks like it could hold it’s own.
Sturridge, Johnson and Richards are the obvious big omissions, but I’m not a big fan of Sturridge, and there must be a reason that Capello, Mancini and Hodgson have all lacked trust in Richards.

North east players are not allowed to be called up. It’s in every England managers contract now. If they do a media scandal about them is released.

Comment #85TDS….At the moment, I am struggling to think of any English CM’s….it has been a long day however. Are most of the good CM’s in the PL foreign? Maybe Henderson is the only choice? I’m hoping I’m missing some, as although, Henderson will come good imo, it’s a little scary there is no one else.

None of those are central midfielders though…
We currently have Gerrard, Parker and Jones. Clearly you need more than 3 CM’s !
Especially given that Jones has been terrible this season, Gerrard is crap, and Parker just runs around like a headless chicken – something which bizarrely makes everyone like him.

Comment #91Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Henderson is good enough for what we picture as a decent England side.
I’m just pointing out that Hodgson clearly didn’t pick him because he’s poor. He picked him because there are no stand out alternatives.
As Ibiza said – scary 😐

Comment #92Fatman…We could do a lot worse that Perch. In fact, I would imagine he’s be a perfect player under Hodgson.
As TDS said earlier, I think he has picked a team that will take instruction and play as he wants them to. He doesn’t have time to get control over difficult ego’s, so has had to make do.
Cwarr…I wouldn’t change too much tbh.
GK – No major arguements. Perhaps Forster as 3rd choice. He is a pretty decent keeper, but not a choice I’d quibble about 🙂
Defence – I’d say Richards should be in there. As said above, if fit, Walker. Oh and the statistically best RB in the PL…of course.
Midfield – I would take Johnson. I think we’re lacking just a bit in some flair (ish) players. But that’s me. I do understand the selection Hodgson has gone for.
Attack – Pretty spot on. Maybe Sturridge as one of the flair players. But Rooney was always going to go, Defoe should be there as he is a proven scorer if needed. I would take Carroll. Maybe it’s the past clouding my judgement, I just feel he is capable of causing some problems and like it or not is a typical English CF.
So…errr…basically, if I b*tch about the actual selection too much, I should just shut the hell up 🙂

Adam Johnsson, Micheal Carrick even Jay Spearing but too be honest there is quite a list of English midfielders/ wingers that could have played in that position that are a damn sight better than Henderson, not too mention the smell the other players will have to put up with being a filthy SMB

Comment #96@tds no goals or assists. Like downing lol. Gerrard isn’t what he used to be. I agree on parker. He’s a total headless chicken. Never stays on his feet to tackle either. If he misses a tackle and is on the deck the defenders are rather exposed

Actually, wiki says he only made 15 appearances. I’m sure that’s not true though, is it???
Pass completion doesn’t fly with me. You must have watched us play them? I’d have a decent pass completion rate if I spent 90 minutes passing the ball round my own half!

Comment #107Haha. I just think it’s funny how everyone complains about the squad, then when you actually think about it there is f’ all to choose from.
It’s a very very sad development in the English game.
I used to think it was just the price paid for having an exciting league, but then the Spanish & Germans manage to have good quality in their league system AND fantastic national pools.

Comment #110The only changes I’d make to Hodgson’s squad would be Richards and A.Johnson over G.Johnson and Downing.
But if Hodgson wants hard working players who’ll follow his instructions, then he’s probably better of picking the two he did.
Lennon has had a good season – Spurs have really struggled without him – but which right winger would he replace? Walcott?

Comment #114Lennon has as well though I guess. At the World Cup he seemed terrified of taking his man on. It’s bizarre how players change under the pressure of international football.
In friendlies and for Spurs he’s a pretty scary proposition, but for England he’s more interested in turning around and passing backwards, playing it safe. Incidently, that’s all Downing does for Liverpool.

Absolutely has to be everything he’s put in so far and he’s had quite a bit back as well so if you take into account his free advertising for SD,if he manages to sell us for 250M in a couple of years he’s done alright,so before people spout how good he’s been to us he’s not a kindly benefactor.
