Newcastle Interested Again In Lyon’s Left Back

Newcastle want to sign a full-back and a center back this summer to shore up their defense, which was often the Achilles heel last season.

Aly Cissokho – 24 year-old Lyon left-back

That’s even though Newcastle kept 15 clean sheets in the Premier League last season, which was only bettered by the  two Manchester clubs.

And with Davide Santon able to play in either full back position,  Newcastle could opt to go after a left back rather than a right back.

Two right backs Newcastle have been linked with are Nathaniel Clyne, the 21 year-old Crystal Palace player, and 26 year-old French International Mathieu Debuchy, and either of those would be excellent acquisitions for Newcastle this summer.

And there’s news today that Newcastle are increasing their interest once again in Lyon left-back Aly Cissokho, who has reemerged as a possible option this summer.

Newcastle were linked with the player last summer, and even got close to signing the once capped French International, but at that time one of the problems was the fee being asked by his club Lyon was too high.

Aly still has two years of his current contract to run, but sources in France say he could leave the Lyon club this summer, and Newcastle are interested.

Newcastle know all about this player as they have scouted him over the last two years, ever since Graham Carr joined the club as Chief Scout, and Newcastle think he would be a good player in the Premier League.

So it will rest on how much Lyon want for their player this time around, and Manchester United and Italian side Napoli have also been linked with Cissokho, who did not make the French squad for the upcoming Euro 2012 Championships.

Fabrizio Ferrari is Cissokho’s agent, and he had this to say:

“He would be interested in playing in Italy, and it would be a good time to take him. But we also know English club are very interested in Aly. A valuation? I think you can take him with €8M Euros.”

€8M is about £6.4M, so that’s not too bad a valuation – if it’s accurate since Lyon will set that figure.

Cissokho joined Lyon from Porto in 2009, for €15M, and has since played 100 times for the French club with a couple of goals.

What do you think?

Neither him or pieters seem highly rated by fans from their respective countries. Pieters more so but he seems to pick up a lot of injuries.

Debuchy is the best full back we’ve been linked to by a mile; sign him up Pards!

I think Cissokho is the ideal signing for us. In my opinion, he is the most exciting left-back that we have ever been linked with. We desperately need a left-footed left back and he fits the bill. He didn’t have the best of seasons last year, but neither did Davide Santon when he was at Inter. It is now the right time to get him signed up. He’s 24/25.

Cissokho has been having some shocking games this season he seems a player thats gone off the boil. Good going forward but defensively has been a weak link.
