Steve Howey is a center-back who was born in Sunderland and was on Newcastle’s books from 1989 through 2000.
Steve Howey – while at Newcastle
Steve ended up playing around 200 times for the Magpies before he moved to join Manchester City, but his career was blighted by various injuries.
Howey earned four full caps for England and was part of the Euro 96 squad, when England reached the semi-finals with Alan Shearer the star and scoring the goals.
Steve has been interviewed on the talkSPORT Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show this morning, and he has talked about what seems to be the stories on Newcastle currently doing the rounds – can they keep their top players this summer?
This is what Steve had to say:
“Alan Pardew has already earmarked some of the players he wants to bring in,” “Chief scout Graham Carr has done amazingly well. He’s gone out and scouted this type of player.”
“Clubs that have got a lot of money are now looking at players who had a good season at Newcastle. Alan will have to do really well to keep hold of them all.”
There are a number of Newcastle’s top players drawing interest from some of England’s top clubs, and they include Cheick Tiote (Chelsea and Manchester United), Papiss Cisse (Manchester City and Manchester United), Demba Ba (Tottenham) and goalkeeper Tim Krul (Tottenham).
We’ll just have to see how things turn out by September 1st, with Newcastle also hoping to bring in some good recruits, especially for the defense, which was probably our Achilles heel last season.
Cheick Tiote helped Ivory Coast beat Tanzania 2-0 yesterday in a World Cup qualifier in Cheick’s home town – Abidjan.
The Newcastle midfield enforcer played 67 minutes of the game and goals from – who else – Didier Drogba, and Salomon Kalou gave the Ivorians the victory.
Five African teams will make it through the qualifying rounds to take part in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and we hope for Cheick’s sake that the Ivorians are one of those.

Comment #5As an Englishmen it pains me to say this but, I just can’t get behind this current England squad and a manager that picks a player like Downing, who has performed so poorly that even Marveux who has missed 95% of the season through Injury managed to create more scoring chances.

Whats that got to do with anything on this blog, have i missed sometthing.? its like quoting the price of cheese.
Everyone knows we have a fight to hang on to our better plyers Steve.
It does,nt take a genius to realise that Ashley is a tight fisted B’./,\;rd. and any top club can have their pick of any player they wish to take.
Its all about ambition and, unfortunately, other clubs are more ambitious thn us.
We,ve had a fantastic season but even now i bet MA does,nt push the boat out and try and convince us that he IS s ambitious as the fans.

Comment #10I think England will do just as well as ever. This team every body has slated but I think they will hold their own. A lot of the time when it’s looking like things are going against you you perform your best. This England team has its backs against the ropes and im sure they’ll come out fighting

Comment #11A follow up to my previous blog Gerrard has said thge loss of Cahill is a huge blow & i quote Gerrard “We need our biggest & best players to win games” so Hodgson picks a player who has played 6 games for England under 21s & 46 games for Liverpool, he picks Kelly ahead of Rio Ferdinand who has captained his country played 81 times for his country. As stated by Hodgson! Ferdinand was left out of the squad for football reasons I bet it was,the fact that there court case pending following Terrys alleged racial abuse of Anton Ferdinand has nothing to do with it.If Terry is found guilty the FA should be made to explain their part in the failure to selectRio ferdinand in the original squad.Age cannot be given as a valid reason otherwise Terry nor Gerrard would have been there.
