Fears Newcastle Will Lose At Least One Big Player This Summer

12:04 pm, Tuesday, June 5th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 48 Comments

John Anderson played for Newcastle for ten seasons from 1982 through 1992, and the defender played over 300 games for the Magpies.

Demba Ba – the most likely to leave?

John was talking to talkSPORT yesterday, and he voiced the fears of many a Newcastle supporter this summer, that we will lose at least one top player in this summer’s transfer window.

We all know that  almost every single player has his price at Newcastle nowadays, and once a club comes in and meets the selling price, that’s it - Newcastle will sell.

The only positive thing is that the price of our players will have gone up significantly from last summer,  because of the great form Newcastle showed in finishing 5th top of the Premier League last season, for the first time since back in 2004.

This is what John told talkSPORT:

“We need to keep our better players, there is no doubt about it, and we need to add to our squad.”   “We did exceptionally well last season.”

“We did better than anybody could have dreamed of but next season is going to take its toll.”  “Playing Thursday and Sunday in the Europa League, we haven’t got the biggest squad in the world.”

“And whether we will be able to cope or not remains to be seen.”  “I definitely think one big boy will go this summer. If the money is right, we all know what Mike Ashley is like. If the money is right, he will sell.”

Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse, Tim Krul, Cheick Tiote, Fabricio Coloccini and Yohan Cabaye are probably some of the players most in jeopardy of leaving Newcastle this summer.

And of those,  Demba Ba and Cheick Tiote are probably the two most likely to leave, with Demba Ba being top of our list.

After all, it will only take a club like Tottenham to come in and bid the release clause price in his contract, said to be around £7M,  and there’s really not much Newcastle can do to keep Demba Ba on Tyneside.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Waking up in the middle of the night and taking a big glug of water only to find its got Bills sons falsers soaking in the glass is too good for Ashley.

As much as I like John Anderson and enjoy the show a lot of stuff they talk about is to get listener reaction and in his comments there,he’s pretty much stating the obvious and saying nothing that we didn’t know already.

  • 3 Graeme // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:12 PM

    This is getting boring.

IF Ba leaves and its a very big IF, he will be replaced.

If he is replaced with another high calibre striker, who is not African and therefore not involved with the ACN next year, the club will actually be a lot better off.

    Where is the problem??

  • 9 Toon-Barmy // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:35 PM

Off topic I know but does anyone know what’s going on with Dan Taylor? His name was originally on the list of players being released but now it isn’t. His name isn’t on the retained list either, does anyone know whether he’s been offered a new deal???

No doubt Ed will blog this within minutes, so I thought I’d post it first.

The press have been disgraceful with Newcastle so far this summer, and it’s only June. Truly awful.

  • 11 Bucks mag // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:41 PM

If a big money bid comes in for one of our players we should accept it – look at how far the money can go from selling a star name

  • 12 cupiddstunt // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:42 PM

I have never posted a request like this before but Ed could you lay off the “ Newcastle Will Lose At Least One Big Player This Summer” type stories all you are succeeding in doing is bringing out all the knee jerk keyboard warriors with their doom and gloom.

A fact of life is EVERY FOOTBALLER AT EVERY CLUB HAS THEIR PRICE every club is a selling club at some stage.

Yes barca have a silly money price on Messi’s head but if someone like city or Anzi matched the price barca would have no hesitation in taking the money as they know they would be able to do a vast amount of team rebuilding with 200 mil.

Players are really quite easy to evaluate from an unemotional point of view, first forget how much they cost, the purchase price is taken care of in the time they play for the club e.g. Cisse we paid 9mil got 13 goals in 14 games and into Europe so 9 mil paid back by results.

Just take what they could possibly cost the club if they left i.e. how many possible league places would they cost us if they left x £750,000 aprox(plus any potential Euro monies lost) per place plus merchandising lost add that to their general market price and there you have a price.

Add on to that the possible financial gain the buying club would have in getting the said player like a CL team strengthening their chance of CL next season, also add on what you think you can squeeze out of the buying team and you have price.

Over simplified a little but you should get the gist.

Also why all the screaming and wailing when your perfectly happy talking about buying another clubs best players

  • 13 rich_toonfan // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:43 PM

I have no complaints with the press. Linking our players with moves to bigger clubs is only natural after the season we have had.

The do it with every club and player who does well, Dempsey, modric, van der vaart…..there is no real football news til the euros start so until then they just keep speculating.

At least other clubs would be interested in our players, rather that than have a team who nobody would want.

  • 14 SuperShearer // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:44 PM

@ToonDownSouth spot on mate. The press are anxious to stir up trouble with the club as there hasn’t been any for a while. If we rate Tiote at £20 Million and Utd balked at that then surely Cabaye is worth the same if not more and will therefore hopefully put Utd off even approaching him. City don’t need him and Chelsea seem to want combative rather than playmaker.

  • 15 naptoon // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:45 PM

another day another ex toon player stating the obvious on talk sport. breaking news – toon to have enough players to compete in premier league and entire 1st team not for sale. http://www.notsouthernpress.org

  • 16 naptoon // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:47 PM

not a real link. sarcasm apparently there were a few probs in that dept. the other day.

  • 17 ToonDownSouth // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:47 PM

    SuperShearer

While I’m aware the story is nonsense, I’d actually have no problem with a player leaving for the likes of Manchester United. Along with Real, Barcelona, Milan & Bayern, they’re one of the biggest clubs in world football.

What I wouldn’t be able to stomach – again – is players leaving for Liverpool, Tottenham etc, where they have little more chance of success than they do here. Those would be money moves.

  • 18 cupiddstunt // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:48 PM

Before anybody leaps on my post I must say that the few posts on this thread have shown some admirable common sense.

  • 19 rich_toonfan // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:48 PM

    @cupiddstunt

    Spot on.

    Man utd sold ronaldo.
Arsenal sold Anelka, fabregas and nasri.
    Tottenhan sol berbatov.
Madrid sold Brazilian ronaldo, as did barca.

Fact is you need to get the value that is best for your club. To man utd tiote may not be worth 20mil, they might not need him that much. However to us he is important and therefore worth that so we don’t sell to anyone unless they match our value.

  • 20 ShanghaiMag // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:52 PM

Manu have just bought Shinji Kagawa, an attacking midfielder.

I think the odds of them buying Cabaye just lengthened significantly!

  • 21 Toon1978 // Jun 5, 2012 at 12:55 PM

    ToonDownSouth

You have hit the nail on the head regarding the press. They have linked EVERY fist team player with a move away. It’s simply disgusting and shallow and it shows their distaste for our club. Krul (Spurs and Chelsea), Santon (Roma), Collo (Man City), Simpson (Villa), HBA was linked to a club in Turkey, Gallatasary i think, (Tiote (Man Utd, Chelsea), Cabaye (Man Utd and Arsenal), Ba (Spurs, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal) Cisse (R.Madrid, Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea) Poor old Jonas has missed out hahaha. Now, Williamson is linked with Swansea. Best not buy a season ticket lads, there will be nobody to put on the pitch by the time the press are finished. They are tying to upset the moral at the club and turn heads at every opportunity. Its SHOCKING, no regard for the supporters at all.

Just seen that mate. Think it’s time to move on from Douglas. Seems as though he has to many people around his to negotiate a move and he comes across as a bit of a mercenary imo. Best thing about it all is the fact we are also linked to better defenders then him….the d1ck haha.

  • 27 cupiddstunt // Jun 5, 2012 at 1:06 PM

    Toon1978 @ #21

Trying to upset the club moral? Now that to me is something to be used to inspire club moral.

If I were AP and the rest of the back room I would be pinning all these paper clippings up on the notice board and pointing out to the players that these clippings are only there as they have really done well as a team, and if this is what they have achieved in their first season together just think what they could achieve in the second.

Point out what has happened to players that have left and how things have not gone on to be always better, sometimes you shine because of who is around you and how you fit as a team.

Handled right all this so called negative press can be easily turned around to be positive reinforcement for the squad.

  • 28 Beattie25 // Jun 5, 2012 at 1:12 PM

Even if Douglas chose us I wouldn’t want him after that statement!

Excellent post mate and exactly what Pardew should do. The club did not finish in the top 5 because of one player, it was the team as a whole. Most players that have left our club has failed miserably.

  • 30 alanrichie // Jun 5, 2012 at 1:15 PM

Is it just me or ar the articles title’s getting a bit redic?

Realing starting to wind me up, the impression you get when reading the title and when you read the article its all just hearsay from papers or completely different (shane ferguson pen story and this one)

Use to really enjoy this blog but in the last year with the problems with the website and Edd sounding more and more like the Sunday Sun for rumours etc everyday is starting to irritate me.

    Please return to old ways.

    Alan

  • 31 solano // Jun 5, 2012 at 1:18 PM

Dudtitspunc @27….You neglect to acknowledge that the stories eminated because of Pardews comments about losing “one or two players”. You can’t blame the press speculating about who that maybe in order to sell papers!

  • 32 Toon1978 // Jun 5, 2012 at 1:22 PM

    Solano

The press seem to use NUFC more then any other club. He said ONE of our big players might leave, not the whole bloody squad. You don’t see them spout off about Bale or Modric very much do you??? They only qualified for the Europa cup just like us. Of course, they are a London club, blue eyed boy Redknapp.

  • 33 solano // Jun 5, 2012 at 1:26 PM

Toon1978….I take your point, but then not many clubs have had their manager and MD both openly talking of players leaving.
There are a lot of shite Southern hacks who really do love to stir it up and take the p*ss but then again, sometimes we make ourselves easy targets.

  • 34 Beattie25 // Jun 5, 2012 at 1:29 PM

I for one ignore all press articles other than those of nufc.co.uk

I don’t care what ex players, supposed itk journos or the idiotic national press have to say in order to gain column inches and sales.

Unless it is gospel it ain’t worth reading or discussing and the only fun we can have is to specialty arrivals as departures just stress us all out.

  • 35 cupiddstunt // Jun 5, 2012 at 1:30 PM

    Alanrichie @ # 30

(Done in the style of Michael Winner in the insurance add)

    Calm down Alan calm down.

It’s the off season so there is little to write about, I agree that some of Ed’s titles have been and will be somewhat contentious but the man is trying to keep interest going in a time of “club football famine”.
You also have to take into consideration the fact that what someone writes is not always what another reads.

(Done in a very soft gentle tone)

Maybe you should find another interest until the season fires back up again, I do not think you are taking into consideration the situation Ed is in, personally I think he is doing a sterling job at present all things considered the odd iffy headline apart.

Tbf, it wasn’t Pardew that spouted off about Ba, it was Redknapp who had no right at all. If Ba was to leave, Spurs would be the last place i would want him to go followed by Liverpool. I think Pardew had to concede that we would lose a player because of what Redknapp did. If Pardew was to talk about Bale’s contract then SSN would have been all over it slating Pardew left right and centre. However, i did hear Pardew on BBC radio 1 talking about losing players but only for big big money. I suppose if we did lose Cabaye, Tiote or Ba then they would be adequately replaced.

Holy sh*t knobhead has resurrected himself at 31

I thought you were doing everyone on here a favour and taking your negative bigoted blinkered Ashley bile elsewhere.

    Solano

I for one hate some of Pardews press releases and DL is as bad at times but regarding selling players I cannot and will not criticise what they say.

They have been open and honest and not avoided the truth. They have said that if a big offer from a big club comes in they will have to sell.

That is a case for all clubs in existence. It’s just that other MD and managers avoid that truth.

If Real Madrid offered £200 million for Messi you can guarantee Barca would be forced to sell at that price. The same goes for all players because that money could ensure success for the future as well as the present.

they think they can get get cabaye for 8-10 mill or 15-20mill

they definitley rate him though……………………. but thts a bad thing………….

  • 40 solano // Jun 5, 2012 at 1:36 PM

1978…again, I agree! The only thing I would add though is that the possible departure of Ba won’t be the one that genereates “big money” simply because of the stipulations within his original deal….therefore, one would have to assume AP was referring to another of our “stars”.

  • 41 TorqToon // Jun 5, 2012 at 1:38 PM

Douglas and his advisors have done themselves no favours with that statement! All it’s intentions we’re to make Ashley and co think “…christ!!! Real and Barca must want Douglas…we must buy him NOW and pay him big bucks to turn his head!!!”

Instead it makes us think of JB leaving to play in the CL as NUFC wasn’t a big enough club for him and ending up in a relegation battle!

    Douglas…see ya later pal!

  • 42 cupiddstunt // Jun 5, 2012 at 1:39 PM

Letting Ashley take a penalty against him at half time in front of the Gallowgate and diving the wrong way is too good for JFA.
