talkSPORT is reporting that Newcastle are on the verge of signing young Ajax midfielder Vurnon Anita.
Vernun Anita – Ajax defensive midfielder
This is not the first time we have been linked with the 23 year-old midfielder, and a few weeks ago there were a host of clubs after the talented player, which included Man City, Man United, Chelsea and Serie A side Inter Milan .
The defensive midfielder could be a a replacement if Cheick Tiote leaves the club this summer, and Vurnon has so far played three times for Holland, and made his debut for Ajax back in March of 2006, just weeks before his 17th birthday.
Apparently Newcastle have made an offer of between £5M and £10M for the player, according to his agent, and there will be further talks between Newcastle and Ajax once the player returns from holiday next week.
Newcastle have been watching Ajax this season a lot, principally because of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, their two Belgium center-backs, but this lad must have been impressive.
The news is that Newcastle are very close to winning the race for the Dutch star and are the only club who have put in a bid for the player.
The reports in Holland a few weeks back are that Newcastle’s scouting network, led by Graham Carr, have identified Anita as a possible replacement for Tiote, should he leave for pastures anew.
It looks like this player could be Newcastle’s second signing of the summer, but it could also mean that Cheick Tiote will be leaving Newcastle – probably for Chelsea.
Vernun has played 137 times for the Dutch Champions with 7 goals.
