Newcastle have announced that for next season they will enter the League Cup at the third round stage.
Alan Pardew - will be going all out to win Capital One Cup
Newcastle usually enter the competition – which has a new sponsor next season, Capital One – in the second round, but because Newcastle are playing in Europe next season, they will enter at the third round stage.
The draw for the first round of the competition – formerly known as the Carling Cup, and now known as the Capital One Cup – will take place in about an hour this morning - at 9:30 am.
Clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two, will be included in the draw, except Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers.
Those two clubs, who were relegated but above Wolves in the final league positions, will still enter the competition at the second round stage, along with the 13 Premier League clubs who are not competing in Europe.
The seven Premier League clubs who have qualified for European competition next season, namely Newcastle United, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Liverpool – who are the holders – will enter at the third round stage.
The 3rd round is due to be played in the week starting 24th September.
Newcastle have never won the League Cup, although we have won the FA Cup six times, in 1910, 1924, 1932, 1951, 1952 and 1955, and have been runner-up another six times – in 1905, 1906, 1908, 1911, 1998, 1999.
The League Cup gives Newcastle the best chance of winning our first trophy, since we won the Inter-City Fairs Cup back in 1969 – that’s a long 43 years ago.
Newcastle will no doubt be going all out to have a good run in the newly named Capital One Cup, and of course winning it gives that club entry into the Europa league the next season.
It would be great to actually win something next season - just a thought – a nice thought.
