Former Newcastle great and captain of the last Newcastle team ever to win something – Bobby Moncur – has chimed in today with his own views on who Newcastle need in the transfer market this summer.
Bobby Moncur – Newcastle need another central midfielder
And Bobby has come out and said with Danny Guthrie having departed Newcastle for pastures anew, the Magpies need to bring in a good central midfielder, as their top target.
Moncur was the captain of the Inter-City Fairs Cup back in 1969 which is the last trophy Newcastle won, and the former very tough center-back had to say today:
“It’s been quiet so far, but I’m sure there’ll have been lots of beavering going on.” “Graham Carr and his people will be looking at players, and things will start to happen soon.”
“Newcastle have got to look at the Danny Simpson situation, and if he’s going to leave, find a new full-back.” “I watched England against France and was impressed by Mathieu Debuchy.”
“Alan Pardew’s been quoted as saying he has an interest in the guy, and he looks a quality player. You can never have too many of them. People have said Newcastle need a new centre-back, but with Steven Taylor coming back, and with Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson, I don’t think they’re too badly off there.”
“They are one down in midfield, with Danny Guthrie leaving, so they could use some back-up there.” “It’s going to be a long season, with the Europa League, so you’ll need a big squad, and I like that they’re looking for versatility in players. That makes a lot of sense.”
“Yohan Cabaye and Cheick Tiote are obviously first choice in central midfield, but you need strength in depth.” “It’s good that the better players are on big contracts,” “But sometimes you’ve no choice but to cash in.”
“Look at the Andy Carroll situation. They held their nerve and got their money’s worth. It’ll be the same with any player.” “I don’t think they need to sell anyone but if they do get a big offer, as long as they get a decent replacement in then people will be happy. ”
“It’s a policy that’s been proven to work.” “But then, where would anyone go? After the season Newcastle have just had, who would you leave them for?” “Manchester United or City, Chelsea and Arsenal maybe. But after that, who?”
“Newcastle are in good shape, in Europe, there’s great team spirit and a good manager, and great fans. What more could you ask for?”
Good words from Bobby, who is a born leader of course, and became a great captain at Newcastle.
I played with Bobby, before he became great at Newcastle, way back in the early 1960s when we both joined the club in 1960, and we played for the Newcastle Junior side together for a season.
He was a good guy then, and played right half-back (the old number 4 position ), and was always helpful both on and off the pitch, but I never thought he would become as good as he became at Newcastle.
We are also hoping that Steven Taylor is in the same form he was last season, when he played just great, before he injured his Achilles in the home game against Chelsea, that saw him unfortunately miss the rest of the season.
But we need four good center-backs, especially when we are back in Europe with the extra games to be played, so there seems room to bring in another good center-back to duke it out with Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson for the two center-back positions.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

I still think we need a CB but maybe not a “world class” one. One which is young and pretty good would be nice.
I think S Taylor and Coloccini are the first choice.
We do though need to get a good starting partner for Tiote. So we have 2 DM and Cabaye at the front of the 3.

I guarantee that all the journos are guessing about nufc!
Nobody and I mean nobody knows our business.
Look at Cisse. There were rumours in the summer and then nothing until he was on that plane!! Nobody, not the mail, the star, sky sports, BBC, Cwarr or transfer sage knew anything.
3 Shot Bru // Jun 20, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Bollox Bobby….we are desperate for another top CB plus back up.
4 Rowan Milsted // Jun 20, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Good words from Moncur there!
I think he underestimates the CB problem though. It cost us a fair few points last season. I’d keep Williamson as back up but we need another CB no doubt, of decent standard too. He’s right about the CM situation, but really we need a striker or even two, and a winger. Ideally I’d like us to sign 5-8 new players, which is very ambitious I know, but if we’re going to compete in Europe and match or improve on last season’s league position then we really need a bigger squad.
I’d like to see a new CB, LB, CM and striker as the minimum requirement this summer. Another CB, CM and a winger would be nice. Hopefully Vuckic and Abied will come through for us this season. I’m hoping Santon has a big season too.

Still need a top centre back to play alongside Colo. Taylor has been injury prone throughout his career, playing him regular only exposes him to more injuries. Best as a squad player.
6 Beattie25 // Jun 20, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Sorry to say this guys but I hate how people try to prioritise transfers regarding which position needs to be filled first.
If clubs did that it’d be a nightmare. Each position deserves equal attention and if the player becomes available the Sign them.
You can’t say we need a cb before a cm as that’s not the case. We need both (and more) or else it’ll be a long season

Shot Bru:
called it right in a oner. Bobby is talking codswallop. We got very lucky with injuries last season to our central defence. if Collo and Saylor get injured, we are relying on Willo again (perish the thought. Willo does OK as a stop gap but should be bench material. Top quality CB alongside Collo / Saylor, is worth another 10 points to us. Ditto injuries to Krul….. We could do with a TOP reserve keeper, not fussed on Elliott from what I have seen.
Guthrie away means we desperately need cover in Central Mid (Tiote African cup again this jan)……………

(sensibly priced) Targets we should be looking at (in positions we need strengthened:
Scott Dann
Matt Jarvis or Adam Johnson
Neil Taylor
Toby Alderweireld
Mark Davies
Steven Fletcher

Can we just take a moment to think of the Plight of retired footballers.
Once truce stepped away from the game they’re at a loss as to what to do next. Many turn to gambling, alcohol and crime.
Judging by these comments bobby moncur is obviously on crack.

Welcome to the real world. It sucks big time. Stay on college your entire life. Bang about, party hard and wear protection. Dot miss out on lifes opportunities because before you know it your sat at a table talking bollocks on a blog about nothing impaticualr wishing you had the courage to tell the new girl how hot she is and wondering if she would follow you to the lift for a kiss and a cuddle. Knowing all the while you’ll let this moment pass you by like always and store up the images of her for later so you can throw one off and cry the whole way through.

42 tarie4 // Jun 20, 2012 at 1:22 PM
ok, I am going to throw this out there.
Nufc had 15 clean sheets last year, 3rd to man U and man city. We got hammered for 5 at spurs, but with perch and Guthrie in midfield, i thought we were always gonna lose that game. Fulham and Norwich and maybe wigan.are the only games i can remember were we dropped points, but then again we were fortunate to draw against man U away, qpr away and the win at wolves etc.
Taking all that into account the defence was fairly solid. Though wen we did lose, we got hammered. But that’s football.
yes we do need another CB, but i feel we need a top cm\dm. So i am with the captain on this one.
43 hotdog // Jun 20, 2012 at 1:27 PM
tarie – pretty much summed the season up well there kid. I like Williamson but he is a 1mil player and not good enough if we want to break into the top 4. He will still be happy to be invloved but we defo need a top centre back.

Diame to west ham. Should of been a target
45 Nick 69 // Jun 20, 2012 at 1:40 PM
OoAhDembaBa – I think bids for Anita, De Jong and Debuchy say we’re aiming a bit higher than players like Diame, would be ok as back up but if Mike wants to pay the money for a better quality player who are we to complain. I mean Diame was always on the bench when i seen Wigan in 2nd half of the season.

54 Lynxie // Jun 20, 2012 at 2:26 PM
Diame. Strong quick, eye for goal, great engine. And 20 year old (I believe) Why was he not on our radar? Surely fits our purchsing scope. perhaps Graham Carr got someone better up his sleeve??
55 Lynxie // Jun 20, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Perchino. We will be able to see him for ourselves in 6 weeks, coz we will be playing again by then, which is a bit late in th eday………. I am expecting serious movement in the next ten days, after Euro Final.
56 SupaToonKid // Jun 20, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Well it’d be good to see us sign Luuk de Jong & Mathieu Debuchy but after that i’m not really sure who i’d preference for signing; i suppose Anita or Mulumbu would be good signings to play alongside Tiote in CDM and Zapata looks a good shout for CB as he fills the profile or being strong, big, quick & versatile. If it does come to Ba leaving i’d like to see us go in for Mandzuckic as he’d be a top replacement.
So yeah my targets:
RB: Debuchy
CF: Luuk de Jong
CB: Zapata
CDM: Anita or Mulumbu
If Ba leaves: Manzuckic
Maybe as well get a player like Elia or Hoilett who could give us something extra going forward from wide/AM.
I just keep on dreaming that Carr will spot some Brazilian wonderkid who becomes the real life Santiago Munez. Wouldn’t it be amazing if Carr unearthed the new Messi?!
57 SupaToonKid // Jun 20, 2012 at 2:42 PM

Diame is 25, mate, and he’ll be at ACON so what is the point of having to CDM who will be away for a significant part of the season also there are better CDMs we could sign (within our budget even)!?

62 hdavid23 // Jun 20, 2012 at 3:16 PM
news today that the hungarian ref group will not get any more games this tournament, coz they disallowed Ukraine’s goal… there’s not a single word from UEFA regarding the situation that led to the goal, namely a huge offside that should’ve been called as well… i don’t understand how the UEFA can think it should’ve been ruled a goal…
63 Lynxie // Jun 20, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Maybe now FIFA will allow goal line technology at long last. If UEFA have acted this swiftly to suspenc the Hungarian ref and assistants, surely its time now for goal line technology. It would have been a mighty close call and a brave one to give the goal….. it was not clear cut (Like Lampards vs Germany at the World Cup, which was metres over the line)…. Great clearance by Terry by the way.
64 hdavid23 // Jun 20, 2012 at 3:35 PM
yep, it was a great clearance thats for sure, but i dont know about this goal-line technology… i mean it would’ve ruled it a goal, but it wasnt coz of the offside… i think they should install a system like in the NFL, where they can review the whole play from different angles
65 Lynxie // Jun 20, 2012 at 3:48 PM
picture wasnt so clear where i was watching it (San Miguel didnt help), was it deffo over the line??

67 Lynxie // Jun 20, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Wow, seems pretty clear cut to me, I guess its a case of justice eh?
Still, the linesman would have needed superhuman vision to spot that in real time……..
68 Nick 69 // Jun 20, 2012 at 4:42 PM
Lynxie – the liensman would need superhuman vision to see that? your kidding right? look at the pic and see where the official is stnading at the bottom, he could easily have seen it!! thats what he is there for. Those officials have yet to be seen giving any sort of decisons at all as far as im concerened they do absolutely nothing
Sepp Blatter is still a c**t thought. England get screwed over a couple eyars back nothing happens, not England are on the lucky end of the decison and he’s came out and said goaline technology is now a necessity, not just another option, why not think that way when we we’re gettin screwed over against the Germany eh??
69 geordiejamie89 // Jun 20, 2012 at 7:05 PM
I disagree. Purely because it’s highly likely that Steven Taylor will be out injured for a length of time. We at the very least need a young CB to come in.
70 custurd // Jun 21, 2012 at 8:33 AM
Apparently, NUFC are going to have to stump up £20 million to land Debuchy and de Jong. That’s £20 million for BOTH of them. What the hell is Ashley waiting for? That’s a snip! It seems he wants to get every player at bargain basement prices but that just isn’t going to happen, not with these two. Apparently he won’t pay more than £12 million for the pair and if he thinks he can land them for that he’s living in cloud cuckoo land. De Jong scored 24 goals in 25 games last season, FFS!
