The Dutch football website Voetbal International is reporting that Newcastle are interested in Swedish International striker Ola Toivonen, and have opened negotiations for the striker.
Ola Toivonen – Newcastle interested
The 26 times capped 25 year-old Swedish International has been at PSV since 2009, after joining them from Swedish club Malmo.
Since he joined PSV, he has hit an impressive 66 goals in 154 appearances for the Dutch side, and while at Malmo, the 6″2″ striker hit 17 goals in 51 appearances for the Swedish side.
As far as we can tell Newcastle have not been linked with this player before, although there were reports last August that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew had gone to the continent to watch him play.
And it could be that he is a cheaper alternative to Dutch International striker Luuk de Jong, who seems to be Newcastle’s first choice, but his club FC Twente have already turned down a £10M offer from Newcastle, and the Magpies may not go back with an improved offer.
German club Borussia Monchengladbach are also thought to be interested in the striker, who is good in the air and is right-footed, and English clubs Tottenham, Sunderland and Liverpool (of course) are also reported to be keen on the Swede.
His agent Martin Dahlin is stating there is an agreement with PSV that he can leave for €10M, which is around £8M – and that’s probably his release clause in his contract.
He will therefore come cheaper than Luuk de Jong, if that is true, with FC Twente saying they want anywhere between £12.5M and £15M for de Jong, depending on which news reports you believe.
Ola Toivonen
And Newcastle pull out of deals where they don’t think they are getting good value.
If this news is true, it could suggest that Newcastle may have given up on Luuk de jong, and are going down their list of strikers, and hoping they can get a better bargain than de Jong would be – at the prices FC Twente want for their 21 year-old.
Voetbal International are reporting that Newcastle have actually opened talks with his agent, Martin Dahlin, about a move to Tyneside for the Swedish international, who has 6 goals in his 26 appearances for his country.
What do you think – would Ola be a good signing for Newcastle?

Comment #82Oh btw onto the Rangers players I would have:
Jamie Ness – Just breaking through cracking potential and we’ll have to be quick
Sone Aluko – Only young but quick as out and very tricky good with the ball good touch and hell of a strike, can play in plenty of positions

Comment #86What happened to Mayuka ? He looked like a real class player for Zambia last year. Could be that quick striker we need and would not cost more than 5m ?

Comment #87Just realised we play Porto away on the 28th July, 3 days before the Sir Bobby Robson memorial.. we should re-arrange that game and make it an occasion unless were going to do something at St James for it

Comment #91Rosales makes Simpson look like a benched pub player. Come off it. He is miles better. Can’t understand how we keep getting linked with right-backs, when we desperately need one or even 2 left-backs (Boenisch and Cissokho).

Comment #92Sturridge anyone ?, pardew tamed Ben Arfa and got him to play for the team, plus Torres is finding form and Hulk is supposed to be joining. Rexkon we could get him for 8 million, proven in the prem so not as nuch of a gamble as De jong or Toivenen

Comment #97We were interested in elia last year, transfer listed at his own request after just 1 year there, fits the bill, under 26, available for around €6m, bags of tricks, bags of skill and would be 10 times the winger this overrated, expensive, slow, would be flop… he’s only being linked with us because hes a fan, same as berba. And to everyone saying he was great against us it was two years ago.. we have improved so so much since, plus anyone could look good in preseason! I don’t jp on the hate wagon of any player and I do give everyone a chance but I hope we dont sign him, its not a step foward its an expensive step sideways..

I would take sturridge……he is happy played through the middle and very good.
Out wide he is not happy and acts selfish going for goal all the time…it depends where he would play for us.

Dunno which cloud your heid is in – I love your wish list of seven + starters but it’s pure dreamland.
No why would Chelski get rid of Sturridge (asking price reported as £12m) unless he was a total dork ?
He is brill at toy chucking but won’t play flanking up front jus wants CF… now wait a minnit … isn’t that the supposed problem with Ba – do we want two like that ( I don’t actually believe Ba is like that but you never know)

Comment #115wish it was true.. have a feeling tho this one will drag on and we’ll be biting nails until august 1st, if he’s here with that clause gone I’m happy enuf. At least if he goes then the club get a good fee cos atm we’d get under £3.5m, the other half goin to demba and his agents. Be a disaster to only get that for him

Comment #120As a Toon fan living in Scotland
we should get Naismith on a free transfer as playing in our team he would provide us with a goal scoring threat from midfield and would be a quality upgrade on Lovenkrands
he can defo make the step up as Wenger got him to train with Arsenal a few years ago and said he was a promising player unfortunately he then got injured long term but has came back before and scored against Spain last year
Also Jamie Ness would be one for the future from Rangers as well
