Douglas Also Said To Be Target In Talks With FC Twente Officials

In our poll asking readers if Newcastle need to sign an experienced center-back this summer, a massive 72% think we should be signing another top center-back.

Douglas – Brazilian 6’4″ FC Twente center-back

And there’s breaking news that Derek Llambias and Newcastle officials are in Holland meeting with FC Twente officials today, and trying to tie up a deal for Luuk de Jong, but reports are also saying they are also discussing a move for Twente’s 24 year-old  Brazilian center-back Douglas.

The Brazilian has so far failed to report in for pre-season training in Holland, and has been fined by the FC Twente manager, Steve McClaren – but  the reason for that was that he was with his mother, who had undergone some surgery back home in Brazil.

Newcastle were after Douglas earlier this summer, but the deal became too complex, with so many representatives saying they were acting on his behalf, so Newcastle pulled the plug on any deal.

But it could be that they are back in for the 6″4″ defender, who can score goals, and is excellent in the air.

But we wonder if he’s of the right character and temperament to be brought to Newcastle?

Douglas seems to have quite an ego, and of course he boasted that a bigger club than Newcastle were after him earlier in the summer – big deal.

Douglas is quoted as saying:

“It’s been no fun, but despite having personal problems I see why the club took the measures they did.”  “I just want to get my future determined and return to training.”

Italian Champions Juventus are said to be the club bigger than Newcastle who are interested in Douglas,  and if that’s the case it may drive the price up for the center-back.

And apparently Douglas is said to have a release clause in his contract at Twente, that can be executed over the last 12 months of his current deal – which means he could be brought in for a decent price – if it’s true.

We’re still not sure about Douglas, and the last thing we want on Tyneside is a player with a huge ego – a prima donna – he could upset the apple cart.

What do you think?

Don’t like the sound of that attitude much… If he;s a target though, Pards will manage him fine I’m sure.

@ Ketsbaia9 – I think we still need a more natural LB. SanToon is class but could maybe offer more going forwards if he’s on the right?

Had a sneakin fewlin this one could come back up. I think with our mentality among the players and with our coaching staff douglas won’t get away with much ahould we sign him. En arfa xame in with a reputation and has been a model professional for us. Douglas is a good defender, exactly what we need in that respect, if he leaves his ego behind he’d be great for us!! 🙂

I am going to repeat myself, but I would love Mamadou Sakho coming here. He is looking for first team football to become a regular for the full French side. He is 22 but has played over 120 games in Ligue 1 and has been Young Player of the Year last season in Ligue 1 (the last eight winners of this prize are: Evra, Toulalan, Ribery, Ben Arfa, Nasri, Hazard, Sakho and Belhanda – that says the whole story for me).

Finally a bit of good news regarding press speculation.

What time will the daily mail release their daily ‘Demba Ba to leave’ article so we can get back to the doom and gloom??

Actually he has contract until 2014, but that’s not the point. He wants to leave, he lost his place in the team and PSG are not desperate to sell him, but they are open to grant the player’s wish. They are also not in need of money.

When PSG came for Thiago Silva he was very strongly linked with a move away, but he was linked with Real, Barca and Arsenal, were he probably wouldn’t play regularly.

In a recent interview, Leonardo said they want him to challange for his place in the team, but left the decision on his future to the player.

Convincing PSG is not going to be that difficult, so if we could convince the player, we may stand a chance.

I wonder if Douglas has been thrown into the mix for the current articles because the journo who broke the story wanted to cover his back….. Be nice if we did manage to get them both, mind. Undoubted quality.

Has anyone heard from Angryman of late, by the way? Not seen him post for ages.

Yeah, I think Santon will be just as good on the right as he is on the left. Cissokho is the ideal signing. He is over 2 years younger than Debuchy and is an offensive player. It would a similar signing to Santon last year. They are both great players whom had a small decline in form.

I can’t see Lamine Sakho being out of contract. If he, I’m surprised nobody has snapped him up yet.

I said 2 days ago the Douglas deal could still be on, his Dutch citizenship has been accepted but its not yet formalised, or something like that, but come August when its complete he signs, I’m still trying to find the article where I read it, but I can’t find it, its annoying, wish I could find it

As I said yesterday, the pursuit of Douglas makes sense. Pardew said he wanted a big centre half who could score goals. Collo is quite short, and we need aerial power beside him, and a goal threat. I think the deal will happen.
