News this afternoon that Danny Guthrie has joined newly promoted Reading.
Danny Guthrie - to join Reading
The transfer is not yet complete but it looks as though terms have been agreed between the player and the Berkshire club, and of course Danny is a free agent.
Guthrie did well at Newcastle, and when he played last season he looked a good player, but he didn’t start many games and was only a back-up to Yohan Cabaye and Cheick Tiote, and that was unlikely to change next season or anytime soon.
And since Danny wanted to play first team football, and why not, he decided to leave Newcastle, rather than sign the deal that was offered to him.
The standards at Newcastle have also been raised significantly in the last twelve months and a number of other players, like Leon Best, Nile Ranger and Xisco (we can only hope), will join Alan Smith, Peter Lovenkrands and Tamas Kadar, who have not had their contracts renewed.
Danny Guthrie was a bit different from those players, because Alan Pardew wanted to keep him at Newcastle.
Anyway, we wish Danny all the very best at Reading, and we’re sure he’ll do very well.
Comments welcome.
Note : It’s 104 degrees F in Raleigh today, and the electricity went off for about an hour this afternoon, US time – just got the electricity and the internet back – there’s not too much you can do without electricity these days.

2 Big Pappa Cisse // Jun 29, 2012 at 9:35 PM
Good luck Danny Boy, dont eat lobster any time soon thar
3 Whoarya.com // Jun 29, 2012 at 9:36 PM
Pardiola knows the Danny is willing but has no creativity, guile or ability to change a game and that is why he is a goner.
Good luck at Reading Danny you should get games there.

Good luck Guthers – starting to come into an important time in his career and he needs first team, but he’s always gonna be second fiddle to Cabs and Tank.

Guthrie is a very decent player. Good signing by Reading.
6 Spuggy // Jun 29, 2012 at 9:36 PM
haha Big!
7 Spuggy // Jun 29, 2012 at 9:38 PM
So…
Looks like our targets are a quality RB, CB, DCM and CF.
That will defo take up us a level, especially if it’s Debuchy, Douglas, Anita and De Jong. Wow, imagine those on the books.

@ hdavid23
They are probably staying overnight tbh m8, first they are gunna smoke some weed, eat some magic mushrooms, bang a prossie or two then tie the deal up tommorow morning
9 hdavid23 // Jun 29, 2012 at 9:42 PM
damnit, that image wont get out of my head for a long time…
10 geordie157 // Jun 29, 2012 at 9:48 PM
If the rumoured 6mill bid for Debuchy is rejected, have to wonder if Lambias will try and bring in rosales.
Do like the thought of Debuchy, Douglas, Anita and De Jong. Seems unlikely but if the price is right then maybe. Add Barnetta to that and we’d have a great a squad.
11 hdavid23 // Jun 29, 2012 at 9:51 PM
i think they should literally put the cash on the table when trying to tie the deal up… like in the movies… they wont be able to refuse that
12 dmac // Jun 29, 2012 at 9:59 PM
Im a bit gutted about Guthrie really, i rather rated him if he could stay fit!
13 sweendog // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:02 PM

With a good pre season i’m going to be optimistic and say Gosling will have a good season, although he’ll need to learn from Perch and work hard to earn a place on the bench.
Can anyone else see Raylor rarely featuring this season? Obviously that’s based on a new rb or lb coming in.
16 geordie157 // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:07 PM
Following on from that, after hopefully a good summer of signings, the Jan window will see the likes of Raylor, Elliot and Wilo possibly moving on
Plus if we can’t get Douglas, then go for Grant Hanley.
17 pardew no 1 // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:09 PM
sad to see him go really under rated player and had a fantastic attitude anyway any news from holland
18 Big Pappa Cisse // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:09 PM
In some ways I admire Guthrie in that he could sit on the bench week in week out, collect his paycheck and spend it on horses( Micheael Owen…cough…cough), he would rather leave for a lesser club and be guarenteed a game. Your career is more or less over at 34 in football so you should try and play every game you can or you will look back and regret it when you retire, I know I would.
19 geordie157 // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:13 PM
It’s a good move for Guthrie, Reading should do alright. The Chinese seem to like signing players at the moment, can’t we offer Xisco to them in exchange for a few bowls of rice!!
20 No Plain Saylor // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:18 PM
@ geordie157. I don’t think elliot will be movin on, pardiola only just brought him in, obviously knew him from his time at charlton. Willo would be kept till the likes of curtis good is adapted another season or two. Although I like raylor I do think he seems very slow, and if tavenier stays (hopefully) we’d have tav and fergie comin thru, santon and debuchy first team and atm still have simmo. Could be time for raylor I’m afraid. But the squad is improvin and upgradin all the time, not roo long ago we had sol campbell… just hope we can finally ship out xisco!!

22 wynsleap // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:21 PM
Guthrie gone and Abeid away on loan?
Only leaves the untried Amalfitano and Vuckic left for centre midfield replacement if one or the other ( (or Heaven help us) both are injured. Bit thin on the ground in my opinion. This proposed Anita signing is starting to look quite important.
23 ToonAndy // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:23 PM
Lads I think we’ve took the Amalfitano signing a bit for granted… I’ve been researching him and he seems like a very good player…. Fans for top teams say how much they rate him and have likened him to xavi and iniesta …
24 No Plain Saylor // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:24 PM
True enuf wyn! Id say jonas will stick to centrw mid feom now on tho, I liked him in the middle. Signing anita, mulumbu or whoever it is will be important!
25 G // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:25 PM
I see the usual crap mongers on Twitter are saying we have now signed De Jonng. I will believe it when I see him on the official site, shaking AP’s hand whilst wearing a black and white top.
26 G // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:29 PM
Back on topic, good luck DG, I reckon you will be playing football in the Champo if you see out your Reading contract, but feel free to prove me wrong. Thanks for all the service mate.
27 toonydoonunder // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:36 PM
Anyone else a bit concerned that these deals for DeJong ,Debuchy etc are being reported a little to much ,its not like the Toon to do business in the public eye like this.Could they be over in Holland for some completely different targets.Maybe they are heading to France via Holland setting up a few smoke screens on the way.
28 toonydoonunder // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:37 PM
Ps good luck Danny hope your career carries on on an upward path for you ,its a shame you had to leave .
29 Oldgit1 // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:39 PM
There has been some comments wanting Raylor to leave, shame really as I like this guy and does cover a number of positions and has a wicked free kick on him (Sunderland) I accept his crosses are not always the best but hope he isnt the new whipping boy for some of the bloggers on here.
30 No Plain Saylor // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:48 PM
@ oldgit,
I agree with you, I like him, he’s hardworking and he is versitile. But if we have debuchy, tav and simmo? I dunno raylor does seem fairly slow, id have no problem with him stayin tho
31 hdavid23 // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:51 PM
G, where is it on twitter?
32 geordie157 // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:52 PM
One player who was heavily linked and hasn’t been mentioned much is that Corgnet of Dijon, as they were relegated he’d prob cost about 3mill i’m guessing, could bolster the attacking mid options.
Fingers crossed at least one deal is confirmed by Monday.
33 Nick 69 // Jun 29, 2012 at 10:53 PM
toonydoonunder – a lot of our deals are done in the public eye just like any other clubs. The only ones that we’re kept under wraps for for good reason. Cabaye had a very low get out clause, so we would hardly alaert other clubs to that, and neither would Lille. Marveaux was all but signed for Liverpool and we swept very very late and got him. Ba was linked with us a lot in media, as was HBA, Santon, and Cisse before they signed

Top 10 goals of the season

35 geordie157 // Jun 29, 2012 at 11:01 PM
@SwedishMagpie
It would take something special to score 3 goals in one season better than that top 3!
Plus now its going to bug me what the music was, as i recognise the song.
36 geordie157 // Jun 29, 2012 at 11:03 PM

BOOBS BOOOOBS!!
Now that I have your attention,
I saw recently that manchester united have 659 million fans worldwide, 325 million of which are located in asia. Signing lagawa could sell how ma y shorts out there?!!?! Ita crazy, surely chong yung lee, a good young player, wouldn’t cost much, bolton relegated like, he’d well be worth 4 million or so, as a player alone, but to add to our fanbase, shirtsales and marketing

46 G // Jun 29, 2012 at 11:46 PM
@31 it was that Cwarr, and all the other muppets that believe he is itk and repost it. Like I said, when I see him on the club website in the right colours I will believe it.
47 nufc90 // Jun 29, 2012 at 11:49 PM
I was optimistic about de Jong until Cwarr tweeted now it’s not gonna happen
everything he says is a lie! Gervinho, gameiro, erding, etc
48 No Plain Saylor // Jun 29, 2012 at 11:55 PM
Kinda wanted forster ta stay!! Ahh well more cash dollar
49 Harley // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:04 AM
Have to say I think Guthrie is good enough to play for England one day but only if he gets a run of games. His injury record is terrible though, I just can’t see it happening.
50 ToonTonic // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:39 AM
Bye bye Danny…Good player…just not good enough for a starting place. Good signing for reading
51 i Toon // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:55 AM

52 Batfastard // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:02 AM
Regardless how much we get from Simmo and best we will only spend 20 mil max Erik Pieters still a possible signing a LB but can also play at CB
