French Winger Hopes To Improve On Last Season

10:59 am, Saturday, June 30th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 344 Comments

We saw glimpses of how good Gabby Obertan can be for Newcastle last season, but some niggling injuries seemed to interrupt his progress a bit last term.

Gabby Obertan in action against Blackburn last season

There’s no doubt Obertan has a lot of skill and is a good technical player, and that’s true with most of the French players, who are schooled in the basics when very young.

And Obertan also likes running directly at defenders, which can scare the living daylights out of them, and looked very good in some of the games last season.

So with an injury free season next term, we think (and hope) that Gabby can improve his play on Tyneside.

This is what Gabby, who was born in Pantin in the northeastern suburbs of Paris, told the local press today:

“I am looking forward to finding some rhythm and coming back fully fit.” “You always need that. Everybody had a great season last year and we’ll look to build on that.”

“As a first-team player you have to prove all the time what you can do in front of the manager.”  “No matter if that’s in training, friendly games, reserve games or first team.”

“You are always looking improve and catch the manager’s eye.” “I showed last season I can play in a different position when needed.” “But you just want to play your part no matter where that is.”

Gabby played 25 times with one goal last season for the Magpies, and that was a big improvement over his two previous seasons at Manchester United, where he played only 28 times with one goal.

Obertan played for all the French Youth teams at U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21 level – appearing 11 times with one goal at the U21 level.

But Gabby has never been capped by France at full International level,  and we also have to remember he’s still only 23.

This lad still has time to do very well at Newcastle, and then maybe force his way into the full French side, and that’s  what we’ll be hoping for over the next year or two.

Comments welcome.

I for one hope he does

  • 2 cupiddstunt // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:00 AM

    Improve that is (sorry)

  • 3 GFH // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:03 AM

Given encouragement from the terraces he can become a confident great player , given flak I could see him sink .

  • 4 Toonboy_84 // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:08 AM

    @gfh

He is clearly a confidence player. People shouldn’t underestimate what some good vocal backing could do for the lad.

  • 5 MKtoon // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:12 AM

Really hope he comes good one day… Just needs to get a bit of confidence and a better end product and hed be a cracking player.

  • 6 cupiddstunt // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:12 AM

I think the fact that he played through all levels at French nationals but the senior team show how going to a club that is such a pressure cooker like manure is not always good for the long term career.

The lad had obvious talent in abundance and was coming along nicely but then fergie took him to manure and he went backwards, I just hope that NUFC can work with him and bring the confidence back to the surface.

I think the secret with him is nurture not force and with manure it was force in my opinion.

  • 7 magpiemover // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:17 AM

send him out on loan to the championship for a season get him confidence them next season we might see the best of him

  • 8 magpiemover // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:17 AM

    then not them

  • 9 SupaToonKid // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:19 AM

Obertan for sure has the ability to become a top player and with the Europa League games, which i think will benefit him especially, can only help him improve as a player along with our support and the nurturing of Pards, Carver and co.

  • 10 toonfin // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:19 AM

Haha Super shola created the storm http://t.co/gfmIOdJ3

  • 11 MKtoon // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:19 AM

I would especially like if he scored against united one day… :)

  • 12 SupaToonKid // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:22 AM

    magpiemover,

No sending him down a League will not help his confidence at his age (23). He will get opportunities in the Europa League and domestic cups to improve as a player and then try have a crack at the Prem side if somebody like Benny or Marv gets a knock or goes out of form.

  • 13 Graeme // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:22 AM

He has great potential to deliver what Jonas can’t and that’s whipping the ball into the box from the wing.

We have the strikers, no doubt about it, if Obatoon can provide the service, we will see more goals from more players and that has to be a good thing!!

  • 14 RobertLeeNo.7 // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:25 AM

the kids problem is self belief definitely.. He also needs to improve on his decision making.. when to put in the ball early or take on the full back to the touchline. Before that though is the self belief that he can give defenders nightmares. Hope he works out but needs huge improvement.

  • 15 SupaToonKid // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:27 AM

Really looks like we could be in for a busy early July if all goes well.

    Luuk de Jong for Best
    Anita for Guthrie
    Debuchy for Simpson
Douglas (still hopeful we may get somebody quicker like Mbiwa or Zapata) for Campbell
    Amalfitano for Lovenkrands
Abeid or Gosling will step up for Smith replacement

Maybe then just need a magic man like Hoilett or Narsingh to provide a bit more cover out wide, CAM and as supporting pacey strikers and we’d be sorted.

  • 16 SupaToonKid // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:30 AM

Yeah Hoilett or Narsingh or maybe Hueng Son-Min if Hamburg drop the price tag down a bit will replace Ranger if we can get rid of him as well.

  • 17 elpaso_geordie // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:30 AM

I dont recall to many glimpses of brilliance from Obertan to be honest and his delivery into the box was bloody awful

Lads not up to it – end of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 18 Nick 69 // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:42 AM

there was maybe 1 or 2 moments of quality from him the whole season. Hope he comes good, however can’t see it. Don’t think he’s got it in him to play well conistently. At best we’ll get 1 good performace every 4 or 5 games. He’s fast, has some skill, BUT, can’t cross or shoot whatsoever, infact his shooting is up there with the worst, always at good 10-15 yards wide or high

  • 19 cupiddstunt // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:43 AM

    elpaso_geordie @ # 17

I did not watch him pre manure so knew nothing about him but was impressed when he turned out for manure in a prem match.

He had serious pace could take a defender with no problem and had an abundance of tricks to unbalance defenders with.

But he is so obviously a confidence player and needs to be nurtured not dropped at the first error, he had stiff competition at his slot and needed more time than fergie was prepared to give him.

Your nonsense of a comment is a typical example of how entrenched people can become in their outlook, it’s also a great example of why you are just on this blog rubbishing players instead of running a team/club of your own.

You come across as one of those that if they went to the games they would just be berating the lad and not giving him the chance he needs.

  • 20 rich_toonfan // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:43 AM

I hope he comes good but I think it is more than confidence.

He was a star at youth football but he has struggled to make the grade in the senior game.

The time he spent at man utd will have slowed his progress as he didnt get many games.

I never boo our players but if he wants the backing of st james’ he will have to earn it. He needs to show hard work and be brave and want the ball.

I’m sure he can do this but it is down to him to show it.

  • 21 Cool Hand Luke // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:47 AM

I see him as a Nani type of player, Nani was awful for a year or two, similar pace, tricks but poor decision making letting him down, now he is excellent. Heres hope Gabby finds the form he is capable of.

  • 22 spitfire_ // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:50 AM

Damn… there’s a lot of shrinks out here… confidence, self believe… obviously anyone are in his head. But maybe there’s have a simple explanation… like he just sucks or he doesn’t fit in england style of play… but that’s me. He have a second season to prove himself… if he is still on this level he must go… Colo also was awful in his first season but he have a massiv improve sence then… so one last chance for Obertan.

  • 23 OoAhDembaBa // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:55 AM

don’t understand why he doesn’t use his pace more often? he can burn players with ease but yet decides for the trick stick, just knock it on and whip it in

  • 24 yorkshireToon // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:56 AM

Just seen on sky sports clynes contracts out tomorrow, forgot about that wonder of we’ll step up approach for him with west ham hoping to sign him

  • 25 Nick 69 // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:57 AM

Cool Hand Luke – he has nowhere near the quality of Nani. Nani as a cracking cross and shot and Obertan’s is woeful.

If Obertan’s end product was going to improve it would have done so at Man Utd, who lets be honest have a much much better track record of improving players than us. Fact is Fergie doesn’t sell players cheap that have potential to become top players.

And for all those saying its just confidence, he needs games etc etc. Can we really afford to be carrying players for 5-10 games just so they can gain confidence with the HOPE, that he’ll get better? He had a run of about 10-15 games at the start of the season and got worse not better from what I remember

  • 26 Cool Hand Luke // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:01 PM

Nick69, he does now, but in his first season for man utd he was woeful, so was ronaldo for that matter. My point was that hopefully there is alot of improvement left in him.

  • 27 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:02 PM

Cant really see him pushing benny for his spot maybe try and get him learn a new position like tucked in behind the striker because in all honesty raylors better on the wing

  • 28 Indian Magpie // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:05 PM

    is baines worth 15 million?

Harry redknobb would have signed ballotelli? my goodness how good is he? he even turned us down.

  • 29 cupiddstunt // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:08 PM

    Spitfire @ # 22

It’s nothing to do with being a shrink, it’s just watching the players and how they behave.

Some players have a strong character and personality and other don’t, those that don’t are more susceptible to the reactions of the crowds Gabby appears to be one of the latter.

Simple really don’t just look at what the player does with the ball but also how he behaves when he passes it or shoots, if it’s a dud does he get angry with himself and then go looking for the ball again to do it right or does he go into hiding a little.

  • 30 graham cwarr // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:09 PM

@nick69 except ravel Morrison who fergie said has the most potential he’s seen.

  • 31 graham cwarr // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:10 PM

    And giuseppe rossi

  • 32 Toon1978 // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:10 PM

Obertan has the ability he just lack’s confidence imo. As for De Jong, it’s not looking good as all i am seeing is that prat Maclaren banging on about paying over the odd’s for Jong. With us losing Cisse and Ba to the AFN and Olympic’s i think it’s pretty important that we get De Jong through the door. One minute it look’s promising the next it look’s like the deal is doomed lol. Finger’s crossed on this one, it will go to the wire imo :)

  • 33 graham cwarr // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:13 PM

Obertan has the physical ability but his feet are currently 10 yards ahead of his brain

  • 34 rich_toonfan // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:15 PM

    @toon1978

McClaren has no say in it, it’s down to the clubs officials. Steve will obviously say that so when he is sold the fans will think he tried to keep him.

People have very polarised opinions of obertan. Truth is he is a decent player, nothing special but he needs to show it.

If Obertan’s end product was going to improve it would have done so at Man Utd, who lets be honest have a much much better track record of improving players than us.

Sorry just to name one, Veron £28 mil fergie did not have a clue as to how to get the game out of the then MASSIVE signing he made don’t be taking in by the hype that surrounds the club, they are equally adept at making right royal f**kups as anyone else.

The fact they get overshadowed by the clubs success does not take away the fact that they regularly cock up on players.

  • 38 Nick 69 // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:21 PM

Cool Hand Luke – Nani had a bad first season at Utd yes, but id seen him play in Portgual and he had quality delivery and shooting then, it was just about adapting to the Prem. Obertan however has shown no signs of a good end product, and has been in England 3 year now and probably looks a worse player than when he arrived.

graham cwarr – Morrison is another bell end like Ranger tho, and he didnt want to sell Rossi but had no choice as he wanted to leave

  • 39 cupiddstunt // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:24 PM

    Nick 69 @ # 38

Obertan however has shown no signs of a good end product, and has been in England 3 year now and probably looks a worse player than when he arrived.

So he was a better player when he arrived then what he is now so is that not possibly more of an indication that he has been mismanaged than anything to do with his playing ability????

  • 40 cupiddstunt // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:25 PM

Sorry typo previous post should have looked like this

    Nick 69 @ # 38

  • 41 Nick 69 // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:25 PM

cupidstunt – that had nothing to do with developing the players skillset. Totally different situation, Veron just simply did not suit the EPL, he has proven before, and after playing in England that he was a top quality player. I never said they don’t make f ups, don’t even know where that subject has came from. I was talking about developing young players ability, and they are head and shoulders above us. But if you want to talk about Man Utd f*****gn up on players, and Obertan in the same sentence, that surely that proves my point that he isn’t good enough and was another of there f ups

  • 42 geordie157 // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:26 PM

Totally agree with the comments about him being a confidence player, started the season well then lost his way a bit and stick he got definately affected him.

But saying that he does to work on when to go past a defender and be a bit smarter with the ball, ie when to cross first time and not always take that extra step or step over he loves so much.

Judge him and Gosling after this season!

  • 43 toonfin // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:28 PM

bit crap i know but what about this just for a starter song for obertoon and it gan to the lovenkrands tune,

gabby obertaaaan gabby obertan can he beat his man oh yes he can gabby obertaan lol

  • 45 geordie157 // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:29 PM

Also think Obertan could do a job on the left of Cisse with Ben Arfa on the right, that pace if used effectively could hurt any team.

Gladbach sign Twente’s Luuk de Jong on a four-year deal, according to “Express”. Reportedly about €11m fee.

  • 48 geordie157 // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:35 PM

Beattie25, i’ve seen a few so say New Home kits up on various “unknown” sites.

I’d love to see a shirt like old granddad collar one we had in about 94-96.

  • 49 Nick 69 // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:36 PM

cupiddstunt – no, not really, because when he arrived he had been playing in a lesser league so looked a good player, but after he started trying to compete at a higher standard he looks nowhere near the player people thought he was.

I hardly think both the best manager probably ever, and Pardew don’t know how to manage a player like Obertan

  • 50 Indian Magpie // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:37 PM

that cannot be true as the brollyman has been talking abt de jong and stupid money and 11 million euros

  • 51 Hatem's better than Messi // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:40 PM

With better decision making, Obertan could be a fantastic winger. Can’t see him starting unless we play 442.

Pleased to see more people supporting him than attacking.

  • 52 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:40 PM

Geordie157 and surely thats the problem he started well and got worse and worse and in all honesty should of been dropped 5-6 games before he was and the question should be well how the fcuk do you bring his confidence up as clearly 15 straight games in the PL isnt enough

  • 53 Big Pappa Cisse // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:50 PM

For me Obertan should be used as an impact sub late on in a game to use his pace against a tired defence and he will also get the occasional start through injury or suspension Imo

  • 54 coatesy17 // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:55 PM

I think the likes of Nick 69 forgets that Gabby obertan provided the assist for a few goals last season! aswell as his impressive finish against blackburn. the fact he always wants to improve on his game and doesnt think he is the finished article prooves to me that this guy should be supported rather than the ignorant people who insist he is poor! If pards thinks he is good enough to play i trust that judgement!

  • 55 Hatem's better than Messi // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:56 PM

Borussia Monchengladbach have signed Spain international Alvaro Dominguez from Atletico Madrid.

    Nothing about de Jong today.

  • 56 Toon1978 // Jun 30, 2012 at 12:57 PM

Did you get that of twitter? I saw that rumour but the funny thing is that nobody know which ‘expreds’ it alludes to.

  • 58 Beattie25 // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:05 PM

Idoubt he’d sign for 11 million euros which is just over 9 if we are willing to pay 10 up front

Fret not I say, but knowing that the gloom and doom crew are in today I’m just going to slip out quietly and hope nobody saw me.

  • 59 Beardo // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:07 PM

    Obertan last season:

    19 starts, 7 sub appearances.

6 assists (only behind HBA and Cabaye who both had more pitch time than him) and 1 goal.

More than useful, and if he builds on that this season he’ll again be very important.

  • 60 Toon1978 // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:07 PM

    Beattie25

    Bye bye lol :)

  • 61 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:23 PM

Coatsey 3 assists in 25 games aint great dude gotta admit that most the fans slating simmo n willo are biging this lad up the boy is a complete non team player greedy on the ball poor in possesion and generally just sulks round the pitch which is why the fans get on at him you put your all in or you shouldnt be playing the reason he hasnt reached his potential maybe because of confidence but i think its cos he doesnt give %100 and he shys away from challenges some1 said hes always trying to improve ive seen no evidence of that he signed for us because he thought he was a guaranteed starter found out he wasnt and his form went sh1t

  • 62 coatesy17 // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:28 PM

TDS, 6 assists in 25 games, only behind HBA and Cabs, who as Beardo said both had alot more play time, i thought at times he was poor too but he was struggling with a toe injury but the guy can improve and all i say is that aslong as pards and co have there support in him, then he shall have mine also! same goes with everyone! I do agree he needs to stop drifting out of games and be a constant pacey threat rather than the odd run given away but if you think he is just like HBA before he learned so maybe pards will bring more out of obatoon too? lets all hope so rather than slate him!

  • 63 No Plain Saylor // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:34 PM

I thought oberton was useless last season, and I don’t understand why! Before he signed for man united didn’t he win best player at the u20s world cup? I keep thinkin he’s gonna fulfil his potential, that’s why I was delighted when we signed him, I still think he will but it might not be here.

  • 64 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:35 PM

Not sure where those stats are from mate the PL site says 23 games in the league 3 assists 1 goal and 1 assist in the league cup mate like i said not that impressive when raylor has got 3 assist from LB and HBA no way had much more playing time than obertan!

  • 65 Beardo // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:37 PM

You’d think he was £20m-38 games-0 assists-0goals-man Downing, the way some of you yap on.

Those stats are from the official NUFC webiste.

  • 66 Oldgit1 // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:37 PM

Wasnt oberton an important factor in the team that went on that un-beaton run at the beginning of last season.
Also, strange that ba stopped scoring when oberton was injured.
There is more to his game than the knockers think.

  • 67 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:39 PM

Coatsey also disagree that hes like HBA whenever benny has played be it well or poorly he always runs always looking for tge ball there were numerous games when ober might aswell not of been on the pitch, like i said i genuinly think he signed for us thinking he will walk in2 our starting 11 had a poor attitude got dropped and basically dropped off the planet

  • 68 Nick 69 // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:41 PM

HBA prbably played less minutes than Obertan in actual fact. Obertan started more Prem games, and Obertan was hardly ever subbed off in the run of about 15 games he had start of the season. HBA was always subbed when he started and on a few occasions subbed at HT. I bet those of you stating HBA had a lot mero playing time would be very suprised if we could find out how many mintues each player played.

  • 69 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:43 PM

Oldgit so was shola his link up play with was great doesnt stop him getting slated!

Also not teying to slate obertan but i just honestly think he thought we were a way to kick start his career it didnt really work and instead of upping his game he shyed away from the challenge hopefully the coaching team have had a good 3 months to work purely with and we will see a different player

  • 70 Nick 69 // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:44 PM

Oldgit – Ba didnt stop when Obertan got injured, Ba stopped scoring when he came back from the ACON and started playing LW. In actualy fact a big factor in Ba not scoring was him not playing alongside Best or Ameobi. He’s twice the player when alongside a target man whos willing to do the donkey work

  • 71 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:44 PM

    *link up play with ba

  • 72 No Plain Saylor // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:45 PM

He has all the attributes of a fantastic player, his problems are his mentality, confidence and willingness. Once that clicks in his head, he could be very good

  • 73 coatesy17 // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:46 PM

however good or bad any1 plays: keep calm and trust pards!

  • 74 Nick 69 // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:51 PM

No Plain Saylor – exactly, confidence can be built, but mentality and willingness are natural, if he doesn’t have the willingness of mentality then he will never fulfill his potential.

Im not even arguing about it anymore, if anybody read my original post I sadi i really HOPE he improves and becomes a good player, however I really just don’t see it. And personally, I dont think 3 assissts and 1 goal, for a team who is supposedly challenging for top4, is good enough over the course of a season

  • 75 Oldgit1 // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:56 PM

Still think oberton will come good, Im willing to give him another season and reserve judgement.
European games- I can see him destroying teams and this will start another debate when HBA is dropped to make way for him in the EPL games.
Knockers on this blog will have a field day. lol

  • 76 hotdog // Jun 30, 2012 at 1:58 PM

Ive made my feelings known on Obertan but like alot of fans I hope he makes it. At 23 he should be a player by now it is not young. On Guthrie, he wants the ball all of the time, which for me is the sign of a good player. He was either very good or very poor in games and this is why AP has got rid in my view as he probably thinks he cant trust him every week, like say gutierez. Pace was his other main shortcoming but i wish him all the best for the future, always welcome back.

    Teamstoof & Beattie 25

I’ve found an article which is probably the source of that twitter rumour about De Jong joining Borussia Mönchengladbach. It mentions the figure of eleven million euros and there’s a reference to a publication called the Cologne Express.

The article has yesterday’s date and just says that they’re hoping to tie up a deal in the next few days:

Gotta remember that Obertan has played very little football in the past few season and he’s got to be able to adapt to newcastlea way of football and take every chance he gets in proving himself. Players that should be coming in: Kirkland, pieters, boniesch, alderwiereld, barnetta, Anita, de Jong and for a pure class player, we should have a look at free transfer seedorf.

  • 79 Big Pappa Cisse // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:12 PM

Would anyone take john fleck? Free agent, big potential. Hate to see stoke gettin jamie ness, don’t want a poor team gettin fleck too

  • 85 breno95 // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:32 PM

Toon Andy- all good signings and obviously who we will want to see but I think the formation you’ve put there is abit out of wack because you’ve got de Jong who is 6’3 or something out playing wide, I’d play him where cisse is, and of course Kirkland, he’s an experienced keeper an will be a damn sight better than Elliot and harper

  • 86 Gateshead-Mag // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:35 PM

duno wot every1 else thinks, but i hope if we get de jong we dont play cisse ba n de jong in the same team

would far rather see them rotated for league, cups, europa, with hba n marveux playin regularly, think having 3 strickers would give us less flair going forward

  • 87 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:37 PM

Chris kirkland has played 4 mathces in 3 seasons no way hes better than harps or elliot atleast both have played regular footy on tge last 2 years, kirkland cant even walk down the shops without pulling his hamstring!

  • 88 Gateshead-Mag // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:38 PM

why would we waste, money wages on kirkland when wev got our number 1 with adequate back up, non starter for me

  • 89 breno95 // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:41 PM

To be fair he hasn’t played much yes but he’s been in the PL more than Elliot, harper will probably retire soon anyway and Kirkland has just been at the wrong clubs at the wrong time! I think he would be a much better cover than Elliot who has played league 1 football for two years…a blooming shot in league 1 is the equivalent of a toe tap in the PL

  • 90 Jonny // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:42 PM

I have that feeling that a transfer is coming and will be announced over the weekend. *Luuk De Jong*

  • 91 breno95 // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:42 PM

And good point about them ring rotated it, we need to start doing that more often and that will give Obertan the boosts he needs like this articles about

  • 92 breno95 // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:43 PM

Kirkland is on a free anyway, so wouldn’t have to waist transfer on him at all

  • 93 Gateshead-Mag // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:44 PM

    breno95

have you followed elliot enough to be able to judge him?? the club obviously think hes good enuf or they wouldnt have signed him, plenty good players come from the lower leagues, dont see the point of replacing a young eager no2 with an old keeper that will probs want to be number 1 n may well be the same level of the young no2

  • 94 ~Perchinho the Pheonix~ // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:44 PM

    Lol Chris Kirkland.

  • 95 Gateshead-Mag // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:46 PM

    hahaha^^

  • 96 breno95 // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:48 PM

I h e followe him enough to judge him yeah, I’m not doubting his ability in the fact that he wouldn’t be able to be a satisfactory number 2 , I just think that Kirkland would be a more experienced player to have as our number 2 keeper

  • 97 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:49 PM

Breno wrong club if he cant get in the fcuking wigan team which leak goals like no1s Business then theres no way hes good enough for even our reserve bench let alone our first team

  • 98 breno95 // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:51 PM

If you actually look at what’s being said I think you’ll find that he’s not gonna be first team at all, I would ring him in because he would be an experienced cover keeper, let alone in my opinion a better cover than Elliot due to the fact Elliot has not seen enough of the PL

  • 99 ~Perchinho the Pheonix~ // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:52 PM

Well, if you’ve been following him enough, you should know that he signed for Sheffield Wednesday back in May on a 2 year contract.

  • 100 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:55 PM

But thats the point for the length of his career hes really not that experienced no more than harps and harps is twice the keeper and i meant the first team bench and no hes not good enough for that

  • 101 breno95 // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:56 PM

That’s okay then, he can play for sheffiled, just my opinion that he would of been suitable cover and a new addition for the squad to make sure that we wouldn’t be lacking this season

  • 102 gonufc (up and Hatem) // Jun 30, 2012 at 2:59 PM

Is anyone else a little confused by De Jong? If he is to play on the left, would he not be annoyed at being played there as a true striker? He’s surely not usurping Cisse!!

Unless we’re playing a complete 4-3-3 with 3 strikers up front.

  • 103 rich_toonfan // Jun 30, 2012 at 3:02 PM

Kolo toure is past it and failed a drugs test a year ago so not what we need.

Kirkland is average at best and lower league keeps like Elliott need to be decent anyway, lot of end to end football that far down so often have a lot of work

  • 104 Nick 69 // Jun 30, 2012 at 3:07 PM

gonufc – just because we have 3 stikers does not mean they all have the start every game. we are trying to build a SQUAD, all top teams have 4 top strikers and only 1 or 2 of them start. We will have possibly over 50 games next season

  • 105 gonufc (up and Hatem) // Jun 30, 2012 at 3:15 PM

@Nick69 – I know, I understand that, but the price talked about is ~11m – I can’t imagine that being spent on simply a ‘squad player’.

Not that I’m complaining, it seems like an exciting signing.

  • 106 Big Pappa Cisse // Jun 30, 2012 at 3:19 PM

I share your pain mate. Either put us out of our misery and say the deal’s off or on. To bloody quiet. Maclaren is the man who is holding things up in my opinion.

  • 108 Nick 69 // Jun 30, 2012 at 3:36 PM

gonufc – its not that he’s going to be a ‘squad’ player in the sense of raylor, or perch etc. He will play a significant role, just not every single game, but Cisse wont play every game neither will any other player when we have 50+ games, this season. If we’re to challenge the top 4, we need to be like the other teams and have £8million players on the bench etc. If we had of last season we could have easily been in Champs League

  • 109 Gateshead-Mag // Jun 30, 2012 at 3:47 PM

I believe that if we sign De Jong then we will see one of Ba or Cisse leaving .

I like some others think that we would not spend that amount of money on a player that may be on the bench , if thats the case id rather spend that 11 million or so on a player that is pretty much first team first choice

  • 112 Gateshead-Mag // Jun 30, 2012 at 3:52 PM

Your nonsense of a comment is a typical example of how entrenched people can become in their outlook, it’s also a great example of why you are just on this blog rubbishing players instead of running a team/club of your own.

You come across as one of those that if they went to the games they would just be berating the lad and not giving him the chance he needs.

For your information i have a season ticket in the Gallowgate mate and your other comment about not running a team or club – seriously mate wtf , i didnt realise this blog was for managers and coaches only

    team 1
    Krul
    simpson – willo – collo – santon
    Tiote
    ben arfa – cabaye
de jong – cisse – ba

    Team 2
    Elliot
    debuchy/raylor – Saylor – douglas/good – guiti
    Anita/gosling
    obertan – vukic
    Sameobi – shola – marvuex

  • 116 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2012 at 3:55 PM

Elpaso its not spending on a bench warmer its spending on a 21 yr old player with the potential to be a world beater you cant rely on 2 strikers for a season that will last 50+ games and add the fact they both will be gone for the ACON we need a 3rd top striker not 3rd choice but just 3 top quality strikers

  • 128 graham cwarr // Jun 30, 2012 at 5:04 PM

To add to beardos earlier comment obertan was for most of last season our player who had created the most goal scoring opportunities. He’s hardly useless but can be frustrating to watch.
And to those saying at 23 he should be showing more of his potential, ever heard of a late bloomer? And 23 is really not too late.
Tiote still has room for improvement so too does cabaye and saylor. Granted less so than obertan but i believe he can do it. 7+ goals and 10+ assists in all competitions this season or ill eat my cat.

Marveaux & Ferguson better than Obertan.
add one more winger is also quite good, hope is Narsingh or
Lee Chung-Yong.the two of them not expensive.especially the latter had Premier League experience~

  • 134 rich_toonfan // Jun 30, 2012 at 5:13 PM

    @cwarr

I do agree some players are late bloomers but I think that he needs to start showing more this coming season.

I think he had an average season just gone, which is fine as it was his first chance to be playing a full season.

Hopefully he will kick on and chip in with 4/5 goals and maybe 10 assists next season….wont be shocked if he does it but equally wouldn’t surprise me if he flopped.

He has been hard to judge as I am not sure if he is an inconsistent player or if he was just rusty as he had a few years at man utd without a game.

Good luck to him though, if it goes well he could be a great player for us.

  • 135 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jun 30, 2012 at 5:14 PM

So many players wouldn’t have made it if they were written off right away.

We are in a good position where we have obertan, ben arfa, marvoux and ferguson who can play on the wing.

So obertan wont even be first choice which means we can give him a little more time to develop as we dont rely on him as a starter.

Rich….You do wonder about what people expect sometimes. You start to understand how the Geordies get a name for being delusional.

I honestly though after our relegation that people had put things in to perspective (somewhat), but due to our high finish last season, all of a sudden we’re back where we were a few years ago. Need expensive signings, need world class “established” players, must finish top 4, etc etc.

All b*ll*cks. We’re actually building a wonderful team and have other fans looking at us and going “Newcastle are doing some great business and running the club well and getting good results”.

I really don’t see what people’s problem is, unless they just need something to b*tch about, which I guess is the case. Oh well.

  • 148 rich_toonfan // Jun 30, 2012 at 5:24 PM

    Cwarr

suppose thats the good and bad thing about football.

It really brings out people’s passion but also people’s stubbornness too.

People need to take a step back and think about players sometimes….players never really reach their peak until around 26/27 anyway…there is always new things to learn and they pick up bits of advice along the way.

I think gosling needs a chance too. He was young and showing some promise at everton….then he suffered a serious injury. That injury not only stalled his progress but it will have set him back. He needs time to get back to where he was and then start to develop his career again.

An injury can seriously harm a players development and I think people don’t always see that.

Rich…On the whole “injury” implication topic. You’re right. I can imagine now people’s response would be “well look at Ben Arfa, he seems as good as ever”. I think it’s easy to forget that players are human like the rest of us, not just machines.

Granted they get paid a hell of a lot of money to do something must of us do just for a laugh. But somethings do take time, it’s just the way of life.

You can’t judge one players progress solely on another players progress. It’s idiotic. Granted, they may not be “as good”, but doesn’t make them cr*p or not worth of a place in the squad.

  • 151 rich_toonfan // Jun 30, 2012 at 5:29 PM

    @ibiza

Price is often used to judge a players ability which is just total rubbish.

would anyone say that carroll was better than aguero? no…but there value was the same.

The thing what creates the price of the player is the media. If a player is well known and often getting into headlines his value will go up.

Cisse would have been a 20mil player if he had scored the same goals at Dortmand as he had at Freiburg.

People need to see that price is not the best way to determine who we should be signing….they need to realise that clubs put money into a scouting network so they can find these equally talented but lesser known players so they can get more for their money.

  • 152 graham cwarr // Jun 30, 2012 at 5:29 PM

@rich and ibiza. I shout at the telly when players mess up but still cheer them on. There is a big difference between that and coming on here to slag them off when its not “heat of the moment”.

spot on with the injury comment

and yeh people think because simpson isn;t as good as kyle walker he isn’t premier league class.

  • 164 Oldgit1 // Jun 30, 2012 at 5:42 PM

@ Indian Magpie So you are assuming that marveaux is a better player.
Lets see if he fully recovers and is not injurie prone, which by the way I do hope he does recover but as yet he is un-proven in the NUFC strip.

  • 170 steve // Jun 30, 2012 at 5:46 PM

I think what a lot of people forget is that were going to be playing in 4 competitions next season. Is there really going to be a first 11, not likely. We will see massive squad rotation and players like obertan and gosling will play a big part.

I’d hate to think these players have been written off after only one season. If we had that mentality we wouldn’t have the best cb we’ve had for many years captaining our club.

  • 171 Indian Magpie // Jun 30, 2012 at 5:46 PM

i think marveaux is excellent, obertan is another routledge. i never slate NUFC players unless they have been poor for 11 years

thts an interesting question there certain things better than pace as football requires more then pace such as technique of crossing, shooting ability etc… but pace is a key element of quick fast flowng football and counter attacks…
well pace if used correctly can open up the oppostion especially if obertan comes on with fresh legs and our opposition are tired……

but then comes the cross or the pass and the finish……. but obertan shud handle tht as he wont feel the pressure coming on later in the game….. well i hope

  • 180 graham cwarr // Jun 30, 2012 at 5:56 PM

@oldgit id like to think marveaux is another arfa. Not in terms of skill but in that he will rise like a phoenix after his injury

  • 181 magpiebop // Jun 30, 2012 at 5:56 PM

Form should be a factor in picking the team. Looks like we will have a top squad that can challenge at the business end of the table, rather than just make up the numbers. Players come and go but the fans always remain!

Hopefully this surgery that marvoux had will correct the problem that has been hampering him for years.

If his problem is correct he could be a top player as he looked good in thevhandfulbof games he played so hopefully with a full pre season he will adapt to the team and be even better.

For me beckham should have gone to the Olympics. He did a lot helping with the bid which isn’t enough to take him but can anyone really say he would offer much less than the other over 23 year olds we took.

Giggs and Bellamy hardly had great seasons , Bellamy is more than likely going to get injured anyway.

Think it was a poor call not to take him.

  • 189 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jun 30, 2012 at 6:07 PM

    @tads

I don’t know for Obertan. He played very few in France. In fact, my judgement is based on his game with Newcastle.

I took his defense alot of time here, my main argument was “he just need time”.

But after a whole, season, he was disapointing at best.

He got a good touch with the ball, but that’s all i seen of him past year.

Beny’s cross are far better. His shooting skill as well. He’s sense of play too whether it is for passing or to pass through his opponents.

Obi made bad choices after bad choices in the play.

At least he improved in defense. But that’s not enough. He still deserve a chance anyway, so we will see…

  • 274 HullMag6 // Jun 30, 2012 at 8:25 PM

How about this crazy idea, Douglas AND Alderweild as well as the expected

    De jong (for best)
    Debuchy (for Simpson)
    Good
    Anita? (For Guthrie)
    Toivanen (for lover)
    Pieters? (why not)
    Boesnich?
    or Tasci instead of Alderweild

    apologies now for dodgy spelling.

  • 275 niafron // Jun 30, 2012 at 8:27 PM

    Jesper

He’s a player and coach agent. The agent of:

    -Deschamps
    -Blanc
    -Ribéry
    -Diarra
    -Nasri
    -Menez
    -Rami
    -Matuidi

    And many others…

In Marseille, the pressure on Bény and Valbuena sign with him was famous.

They don’t. YOu know what happened between Deschamps and Bény…

It seem Bény and Valbuena clearly made to Blanc the reproach to preferr Bernés players during the Euro.

    Pibid,

I think thats where Marv will play next season in the floating cm role, I think we probably need a left sided winger/forward (preferably right footed)

  • 278 HullMag6 // Jun 30, 2012 at 8:34 PM

    Toooon

Calm yourself to all the toon army and those who are football people it will always be ST JAMES’ PARK.

Sports Direct Arena is its corporate identity to bring on more money so we can get players in that we want.

    Chill.

  • 280 mondziu // Jun 30, 2012 at 8:39 PM

    Niafron,

I’ve read your posts many times, but I have never actually been online while you were here. Nice to finally meet you. :)

I’m (not so quietly) hoping that by some stroke of luck we sign M. Sakho. Do you think it’s even remotely plausible? I’ve read reports linking him with a move away after missing EURO squad and Leonardo recently said he can decide his future on his own. Are you aware of any rumours about him and do you rate him as a player and think he would fit in Newcastle? Cheers!

  • 281 niafron // Jun 30, 2012 at 8:53 PM

    @Mondziu

    Happy to meet you too!

Well, four month ago, he was highly rated, so i suppose he’s not so bad than that now…

To be honnest, i would be surprised to see him on the tyne, cause there’s probably many CPL’s teams who want to sign if he leave Paris.

Wich is a distinct possibility indeed.

  • 282 nufc90 // Jun 30, 2012 at 8:56 PM

Duncan castles reckons we’re most likely destination for Hoilett. I thought he’d signed for Gladbach but obviously not. This could be a very very very good summer. Castles is normally spot on as well

  • 283 nufc90 // Jun 30, 2012 at 8:58 PM

De Jong, Debuchy, Anita, Hoilett would be amazing and potentially Douglas with keeping the whole team and we’d be a real force

  • 286 PIBID (the poster formerly known as hattambenarfa) // Jun 30, 2012 at 9:03 PM

With the players we are linked with my optimistic prediction is
pl 4th no reason why we cant be best of the rest behind city united chelsea.
Fa cup quarter finals. Think we will go further than before due to squad quality but fixture pile up will be our downfall
Capital one cup final why not?
Europa league quarter/semi i think we will put resources into this comp but other teams i.e. Inter are just too good

  • 287 nufc90 // Jun 30, 2012 at 9:04 PM

He’s one of the top journos I think he never really says anything about NUFC though so makes me doubt it a bit but if there’s a bargain to be had I wouldn’t be surprised if we were in there

  • 290 SupaToonKid // Jun 30, 2012 at 9:15 PM

I really hope we get Hoilett as he’s young, quick, skillful & able to play up front or out wide. Hoilett, Debuchy, Luuk de Jong, Anita & Douglas would be some super summer business & we’d definitely be up there for the top 4 challenge.

  • 291 SupaToonKid // Jun 30, 2012 at 9:18 PM

I hope we sign a quicker CB than Douglas though as that’s what undid us against West Brom. Mbiwa probably the quickest out of all we’ve been linked with but also a solid presence so fingers crossed we take a look.

  • 292 Toon1978 // Jun 30, 2012 at 9:19 PM

Very clever using friends to lure them in and will make for a stronger team ethos.

  • 321 Marty-Toon // Jun 30, 2012 at 11:31 PM

Obertan has a long way to go as in consistency.
He has probably as much ability as Ronaldo had at his age but hasn’t put it into regular use.
Much the same as Nani has done at Manu .
Useless end result, needs 10 attacks to deliver one good cross and often doesn’t let the ball do the work or do the simple pass now n again.
I really hope that seeing he’s only 23 ,he still has a few development years and hopefully come through this year.
Many players would dream of having his ability, put it into use now.
