Breaking News – Newcastle Have Agreed £5M Fee For Douglas

5:28 am, Sunday, July 1st, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 155 Comments

Good news today that Derek LLambias and Lee Charnley seem to be making a little headway with their negotiations for FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong and the Brazilian defender Douglas.

Douglas – Newcastle have agreed £5M fee from this Brazilian

The Daily Express is reporting this Sunday, that Newcastle have agreed a £5M fee for the 6’4″ center-back, who was born in Brazil, and recently gained Dutch citizenship, and is likely to become a Dutch International defender very soon.

Douglas Franco Teixeira, to give him his full name, turned 24 last January, and Newcastle have been tracking the player all season, and it looks like a deal for the Florianópolis, Brazil born defender may be imminent.

That’s the good news, but the bad news is that FC Twente are holding out for a reported £15M for their 21 year-old striker,  Luuk de Jong, and that’s about £5M more than Newcastle have bid for the player so far.

And if that news is true, we don’t think Newcatsle will go as high as that,  for the 21 year-old striker, as good as he is.

Douglas joined FC Twente back in 2007 from Brazilian club Joinville,. and by out reckoning, the Brazilian has played a total of 184 times for the Dutch club since then, with 15 goals.

And if this news is true, it seems  a decent deal for Newcastle, although more than Newcastle initially wanted to pay for the defender. When the fee is accepted by a club the nest step is to agree terms with the player, and once that’s done a medical is conducted by the buying club..

Douglas will need to fight it out next season with Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson, for a berth in central defense, in the Newcastle first team.

It also means that Douglas can attend pre-season training at Benton next Thursday – again – assuming the news is true – and if Newcastle have agreed and manage to sign the player, born in Florianópolis, Brazil – there should be an announcement on the Newcastle web-site today.

Comments welcome.

15m for both .. Sealed DEAL .. Come on LADS!

disappointed…. was expecting a double deal…. if it was for douglas alone lambias landed in netherlands, would have gone for France for Miang or Sakho or he may have reached Ajax for Alderweid…. All 5 million range better defenders

I think at times last year the Colos partnership with Williamson shows the need for Douglas. Although we kept a lot of clean sheets with these two, Mike was often beaten for pace and this was partly the reason for the spankings we took at Spurs. Douglas offers the same physical presence but quicker and more agile. A step forward if treu

  • 7 Ben3arfa // Jul 1, 2012 at 5:54 AM

Sorry but there is NO WAY that Yanga M’Biwa and Sakho are in the 5m range .. Maybe Alderweild , but the previous two are worth nearer to the 10m mark .. Douglas is worth the same as them but since hes only got a year left on his contract we may be getting a real good deal here .. hes a monster of a player

  • 8 davybtoon // Jul 1, 2012 at 6:02 AM

I’ve heard we hav both Douglas n de Jong in the bag

  • 9 Grafton83 // Jul 1, 2012 at 6:04 AM

Agree with Monte, we needed to strengthen our CB pairing, I like Willo, he did a decent job last season but he is a bit slow at times. With Taylor back from injury that will also give us the depth we’ll need to compete in Europe. Just got to hope Douglas adapts to the prem quicker than Collo did.

  • 10 jesperfuglsang // Jul 1, 2012 at 6:14 AM

Don’t really care for Douglas; don’t like his attitude and I don’t think he is worth £ 5 mil. We most be desperate.

  • 11 Swede // Jul 1, 2012 at 6:28 AM

I do believe both players are there for us to have in the start of next week. The problem is that Twente also feel cheated over money for Tiote. So there are a chance that extra money is due thanx to the fact that it is Newcastle asking for the player. Not to mentioon where Steve come from. WOuld you like to have the player signed for Sunderland or Boro. HWTL

Someone mentioned earlier about the similarities between douglas and bramble. The only similarity i could assume would be the reckless challenges. I can remember matchdays, were bramble would storm across half the field to reach some poor fella and snap him, crowd loved it. Anyway, douglas is a hell of a lot more consistant than bramble, And confident and the ball. Mbiwa would be the most like to bramble, awful for giving away the ball and running around like a headless chicken, if a big team sign him, he’l soon be exposed as mistake prone imo

Barnetta is very very injury prone, dont think he would have contributed much if he arrived here

Wow. Some really impressive ‘in depth’ news reporting in that Express story. No wonder it took two people to write it all!

    Sunday July 1,2012
By John Richardson and Colin Mafham

NEWCASTLE have agreed a £5m fee with FC Twente for Brazilian defender Douglas.

But Twente are holding out for £15m from the Magpies for striker Luuk De Jong.

    The end

    jesperfuglsang

You are right, he isn’t worth 5 mill, more like 10 mill, luckily for use his contract his almost up. And I can assure U, Douglas will be our Chris samba, he is also a ball playing CB, and for his size, he is agile, athletic. He is definitely a massive upgrade to what we have. Have U ever seen him play more than 5 times??
Oh and he is nothing like bramble.

  • 20 Lucasd10 // Jul 1, 2012 at 7:28 AM

Good signing got good height and better With ball than willo so good with colo at the back I think both de jong and douglas done but de jong to be released after douglas de jong away for a break now pherhaps done but not yet fully?

Very happy let’s keep these new players coming in and get the preparations sorted for the new season finished early so we can dick on the yids come the start o the season…

  • 22 jesperfuglsang // Jul 1, 2012 at 7:32 AM

    Tarie4

I am not talking about whether or not he is an upgrade for Willo but about the current going rate for players.

He has 1 year left of his contract and supposely he is worth 5 mil – Enrique was worth 6 mil and I rate much higher.

You need to look at supply and demand mate ;-) there don’t seem to be much demand for Douglas at 5 mil mate.

I still say we are desperate and still don’t rate him that highly. There are better deals out there.

  • 23 hdavid23 // Jul 1, 2012 at 7:41 AM

previous article said they wanted 16mill combined for him and de Jong, so they now only want 11mill for the latter compared to the 12.5 they originally wanted… our last bid was 10mill, so i really hope this means theyre close to an agreement

  • 24 jesperfuglsang // Jul 1, 2012 at 7:47 AM

    Hdavid23

and anothet article said that they wanted £ 15 mil for de Jong; does that mean they only want 1 mil for Douglas?

I would say now we are talking :-) can’t see us paying 5 mil for him, but then again if we are desperate enough why not lol

Tarie seem to think he is worth twice as much; thank God he is not buying our players :-)

“There are better deals out there”

    Like??

carr recently said that, money is there for the right player, and if nufc dnt think its a good deal, they are willing to wait.
I guess its ur opinion. But I would trust someone who has watched him multiple times, and has been a scout for years and years. ;)

  • 26 SupaToonKid // Jul 1, 2012 at 7:51 AM

Looks a great signing, if true, for £5M. Douglas is a physical presence who could be threat in the opponents box as well as our own & looks very Chris Samba like i.e. strong, physical, good ball control, composed & reassured. One thing i do not know is how quick he is, has anybody seen him in a race with a CF, could he keep up?

  • 27 SupaToonKid // Jul 1, 2012 at 7:55 AM

I think that Duncan Castles, who’s a top journo, has some inside knowlede on Hoilett as i can see us using Best as compensation for Junior. Though i thank Besty for his work Hoilett will really add some serious pace and skill to our attack also the lad can cross as well (which is definitely a bonus) also has super shot.

I don’t trust anyone blindly and I don’t buy into the news circus mate.

As a Dutch player with 1 year left of his contract Douglas is not worth 5 mil mate. No one wants to pay that mate.

What is Simmo worth then mate – 7 mil?

I am taking a piss at you mate, cause I cannot follow your logic mate.

  • 36 Korzic // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:22 AM

I hate Football Manager. Makes an armchair expert out of every man and his dog. Good thing that Graham Carr doesn’t use FM to do his scouting like half the posters here. I’d trust a Carr run scouting network over some chump on the internet.

  • 37 sks_toon // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:24 AM

I am very happy if this is true that we got a CB, I was losing hope of signing a first team CB after we signed Good, but CB is our biggest need by far, glad we are getting it sorted. Now let’s try to pry De Jong and Debuchy away and I will be a very happy person. I really think that even if we bid £12 million for De Jong he would be worth it, Howay!

  • 38 jesperfuglsang // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:25 AM

  • 40 davybtoon // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:28 AM

Douglas is a beast of a defender n he ain’t slow, if we get Douglas, de Jong, debuchy n hoilet I will b buzzing that is some quality players

  • 41 jesperfuglsang // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:29 AM

I think we only got close to the 6 mil mark for Enrique. And in my book much better than Douglas and EPL proven.

Ermmm I am sorry, but the club think 5 mill is a bargain, if they are willing to pay that and U dnt?? Carr has brought us some good players for very low prices, and o reckon he deserves my trust.

Logic?? Hahaha, have u ever seen Douglas play more than once?? Which defender shud we go for that’s worth 5 mill?? Since u a very logical, answer these questions mate.

  • 44 hdavid23 // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:34 AM

wonder what the Ashley-hater neggers will say if we get Douglas, de Jong, Debuchy, Hoillett and maybe Anita…

  • 45 davybtoon // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:35 AM

Jesper u can’t even compare Douglas n Jose they play to different positions, Douglas is an absolute bargain at 5mill
The way I see we hav got about 2.5m for Forster, 3mil for best, Simpson will go for around 4mill xisco n ranger will bring in another 2mil that practically pays for Luuk de Jong so the only money we would b spending is on good, Douglas, debuchy, hoillet n a few young players will come like that lad from cov

Lads there was a so called itk on twitter on Friday claiming we had sealed 16mil double deal for de Jong n Douglas n then today the mirror claims it will take 16mill for us to get both do there could b some truth in it, n Courtney the north east journo on talksport reckons de Jong, Douglas n debuchy will all sign

  • 48 jesperfuglsang // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:41 AM

It is not the 5 mil that bothers me but the fact that he has only one year left of his contract and you can get him for free next summer.

And I don’t rate him as high as the others we have been linked with. For all I know it is just media speculation.

Have you heard NUFC come out an say we are looking to buy Douglas?

I do wonder why no one else seem to think 5 mil for Douglas would be a good deal – other football clubs that is :-)

  • 49 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:43 AM

Forster and Best pays for Douglas.
    Simpson, Xisco, Ranger – Debuchy
Carroll – Cisse, De Jong, and Hoilett

  • 50 hdavid23 // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:44 AM

Sazzer, actually Carroll pays for Cisse, De Jong, Hoillett, Debuchy, and Douglas… :D think it was a good deal selling him? :D

  • 51 keeping the faith // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:45 AM

I cannot believe some fans are still disputing players we are going after. The majority of our most recent signings have turned out to be real coups and I have every faith that we are signing Douglas because he’s good enough and at the right money. Surely fans should be able to trust our scouting system now

  • 52 davybtoon // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:46 AM

Nufc do not comment on any player until they’ve signed

Jesper I really question if u hav seen Douglas play yes he’s a bit of a cracker but he is quality he is what we need I big physical defender who is also good on the ball, players like vertoghen are similar to colo playing style

  • 53 davybtoon // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:48 AM

There must b something in the hoilet stuff that journo has no connection to Nufc yet claims we will sign him like someone said he must hav good info to come out with that

  • 54 2_goal_tino // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:51 AM

@ 48 – “For all I know it is just media speculation.
Have you heard NUFC come out an say we are looking to buy Douglas?”

What is not media speculation is that we have two very high up officials in Holland negotiating with Twente! That is undeniable and instantly gives any stories re. Twente players more credibility.

    Also,
    http://thepathismadebywalking.wordpress.com/scouting-reports/douglas/
Quoted as saying his best friend in football is Luuk De Jong and we all know that Pards likes getting players who are close with one another. De Jong, Douglas, Hoillet, and Debuchy would be absolute dreamland!

  • 55 tarie4 // Jul 1, 2012 at 8:51 AM

    jesperfuglsang

Haha ok mate, lets agree to disagree, because, with ur logic, Jose was not worth 6 mill coz no other club came for him besides Liverpool ;)
Douglas has been linked with numerous clubs, maybe we have stolen the march on other teams, where have I heard that before ;)
with ur logic, kangwa for man u wasn’t worth 16 whatever the paid for him, coz no other clubs were in for him at that price!!

But hey, no use arguing here. Have a good day sir :)

Aye, I have asked him on numerous occasions this morning with no reply. I think he hasn’t seen him. He has composure on the ball like collo, and his positioning is very good. Hey carr rates him enough to cough up 5 mill. So I am happy.

    On hoilett
I would love him here, just hope his wage demands aren’t that high. Heard that Swansea lad, ermmm forgot his name, demanded 75k from Liverpool, and BR refused and spurs are willing to meet that. 75k? Hope hoilett has lesser demands than that haha

  • 68 Spuggy // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:07 AM

I still can’t believe that we will spend 10m+ on another top quality striker in De Jong. Smoke and mirrors?

Fingers crossed and hope I’m wrong but Cisse was Carroll’s true replacement and he cost the same. I’d assumed we’d bring in 3-4m replacement for Best.

  • 69 davybtoon // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:10 AM

    Krul

9 goals and 5 assists from Douglas and Debuchy last season :-)

  • 71 Spuggy // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:12 AM

I still think Debuchy signing is the most important one this window. Can see him and Arfa forming a lethal partnership down that right flank.

  • 72 grumpy_old_sod // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:12 AM

Until players are signed sealed & delivered, they are not nufc players.

There’s a lot of the usual guessing by the press.

I hope we do get a central defender and a right back in first, in my opinion they are the areas that need strengthened first.

Wouldn’t mind hoilet on a free, he would strengthen the squad.

  • 73 jesperfuglsang // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:13 AM

    Yes davyb and Tarie4

I have seen Douglas play, but maybe not 5 times. Is that a requirement to disagree with you to? ;-)

I saw him on ocations last year and I saw him get send off against Alkmaar and receive a 6 match day ban.

He is good for a someone playing in Holland and he is big and strong. Not so fast though.

But I don’t think he is worth 5 mil whether or not he has 1 year left of his contract.

Rumors has it that Spurs didn’t rate Vertonghen at 8.5 mil either. It seems the Dutch teams just want a piece of the cake. Maybe that is fair.

Still think there are better deals out there. Simon Kjær would be a better buy for that kind of money and scores more goals.

Pardew wants a goalscoring defender. I don’t think Douglas have scored 10 goals since he signed for Twente.

  • 74 Beattie25 // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:14 AM

I shall be the voice of reason for you over excited toon fans.

Arrergggghhhhh OMG we are going to sign loads of players. Fcuk being the voice of reason I’m getting carried away. If this happens and rumours are to be believed then my wrist is going to be so swollen from the happy slapping I’m going to give my penis.

We would not only have a starting 11 to rival any other team in the league but a bench that would be worthy of a top 4 club. Obviously it’s going to be a 0.000000000000000001% chance of it actually happening but my word it’s good to dream.

  • 75 grumpy_old_sod // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:15 AM

    Davybtoon

No need for a lol, with those players I honestly think we could challenge the top 4.

  • 76 Nick 69 // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:22 AM

jesperfuglsang – Simon Kjaer would be better and scores more goals?? he’s scored 1 goal in 57 apps since 2010 so how do you work that out?

  • 77 geordie157 // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:25 AM

So if Douglas is 5mill, surely Hoilett would cost about the same in compo maybe a little less so say 4mill, debuchy 6mill, anita 6mill, and de jong 11mill.

Total Spend 32mill. Seems unlikely, but if we get 2mill for Forster, 3mill for Simo and 3mill for Best. 24mill does sound feasible. Plus the freed up wages will help.

  • 78 jesperfuglsang // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:27 AM

Well he scores a lot for the National team and he use to score for Palermo :-)

al least I think I remember he did ;-)

  • 79 Indian Magpie // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:27 AM

Did Mclaren say, Dog lous is the best defender in holland, does it mean he is better than vertonghen and alderweireld

  • 80 rich_toonfan // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:29 AM

I think Douglas is value at 5 million.

Just because he is in his last year of his contract doesn’t mean you could get him for 2/3 million.

If we wait until the end of the window we might get him for 4 as they become desperate to sell but then other teams might come in for him.

If the club have scouted him and believe he should be added to the squad that is good enough for me. They haven’t got much wrong the past 2 years.

If you think nasri was in the last year of his contract and went for 25million and a similar figure is being quoted for van persie. Yes I know they were premier league proven but douglas is a proven player in holland and twente wont want to lose him for next to nothing…they may as well get another season out of him instead of lose him for 2/3 million only.

    yeh mcclaren did say that.

but i would take it with a pinch of salt….he will have been trying to drive his price up with a comment like that and possibly start a bidding war.

i have to say i dont really know much about him but i’m definately glad about this news because four centre backs is a must for a top team. i dont like us relying on players who “can” play at centre back to play, its much better to have players playing in thier recognised position.

i definately think him and colo could form a decent partnership though. lets hope it happens along with debuchy and de jong!

  • 85 rich_toonfan // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:34 AM

    @jesper

kjaer scored one goal for denmark under 19′s and nothing in other levels, he got 5 in 62 for palermo.

douglas has 9 in 115 for twente.

would agree neither re prolific but both the same ratio.

  • 86 Nick 69 // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:34 AM

jesperfuglsang – digging yourself a deeper hole because he has never even scored for the national team, and he only scored 5 goals in 62 games for Palermo, your clearly just making things up haha

  • 87 Indian Magpie // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:35 AM

when people say take it with a pinch of salt, does it mean its probably false or definitely false

  • 88 Beattie25 // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:36 AM

If we sell Best and Simmo for 7 million we. Ould get Douglas, Debuchy, Anita, de Jong and hoillet for about 25 million meaning a spend of 18 million. That isn’t much to turn our club into a CL threat but is it plausible?

With the increase in income from tv rights, sponsorship with virgin and puma, wages freed up by departing players and money coming in from tickets and merchandise, erm a self sufficient club out size could afford 18 million in the market. If rumours are to be believed we had 20 million to spend on strengthening which means that selling best and simmo will add to that amount so spending 25 million doesn’t seem so abstract.

But this is not the old nufc where we expect to spend that amount. We always throw caution to the wind and live in reality but who knows?! Maybe this is our time.

  • 89 rich_toonfan // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:36 AM

    @indian

the argument about douglas price is not about whether he has a year left or not…we all agree on that.

its about whether 5 million is good value for a player with one year left. I think it is….whats your opinion?

  • 90 geordie157 // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:37 AM

Just watched that video, that wasn’t even a sending off, thats why Douglas was so angry. Saw a few Cattermole comments on there too, Douglas and Tiote will smash him into a 1000 pieces.

  • 91 rich_toonfan // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:39 AM

    @indian

pinch of salt means just almost ignore it…its a statement which is obvious but not necessarily true or false.

for example….pardew might say cabaye is the best midfielder….you would expect him to say that as it is his player but it could be argued to be true but others would say false.

  • 92 AussieToon // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:39 AM

Douglas’ value is that of around the 8 to 10 million in my opinion, the way the market is today. To get him at 5 million is a bargain and improves an area we needed to desperately. Going into games with Williamson cost us a heap. Now we have Douglas first, Taylor second and Williamson a long distance third. Getting Good in to after a couple of seasons developing replace him will be beneficial also for a small fee.

This is a good signing people. In fact a great signing and solves a massive issue. We have just improved a heap!

  • 93 Nick 69 // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:39 AM

Beattie – dont think we’d get 7million for Simpson and Best, Simpson isnt worth £4mill with 1 year left on his contract. And we’d definitely be looking at more than £25million for De Jong, Anita, Debuchy, Hoilett and Douglas. It will cost £15-16million for De Jong and Douglas. £6mill for Debuchy, probs about £6mill for Anita then maybe £4million + for Hoilett in compo so your lookin atprobably £34mill ish

  • 94 Boys in Black and White // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:41 AM

Maybe we should go back in for Ola Toivonen of PSV if we are not going to get Luuk de Jong. Ola is only worth about 5-8m. Would be a bargain really.

  • 95 Indian Magpie // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:41 AM

    Rich,

depends on your demand, ozil went for abt 10.5, pienar abt 3, krancjaar 3.

we need a CD, if NUFC have identified him as a target then it shd not be in the reckoning whether he is in the last year or not. i think

  • 97 hotdog // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:42 AM

Of all the players we have been linked with Hoilett is the one that excites me the most. We do need a CB but if we get De Jong, where does he fit in or will he start on bench, cisse is a certain starter.

  • 98 rich_toonfan // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:43 AM

    @beattie

I agree…we could get those players for that sort of money…possibly a little more, maybe closer to 30 though.

I just think the club hasn’t got a transfer budget as such. They just look at what they need and buy it if available.

If you think we bring in 6 players this summer we might only sign 1 or 2 next summer. I think the club has longer term planning that one season…

I can see ashley thinking we have 100 million to spend over next 5 years….not 20 million a year.

  • 99 geordie157 // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:44 AM

5mill for any quality centre back is good value, considering the likes of Mbwia, Sakho, Tasci, Vertonghen etc would all be around 8-10mill. We scout our players properly thesedays, unlike Arsenal who got Mertesacker and Squillaci haha

If we get De Jong for the price they paid for Giroud, i think that too represents us being better at getting a good deal.

I don’t know if your last comment was directed at me, but I don’t think anyone is questioning whether or not Carr should scout him.

We have lots of different defenders this year most better than Douglas in my book maybe even in Carr’s bookm as well ;-)

But I still won’t pay 5 mil for Douglas and the question remains whether or not NUFC will? :-)

  • 103 hotdog // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:48 AM

hdavid23 – thats my point really AP will go with two attackers at home but away from home 5 in midfield me thinks but Best & Lovenkrands are away so we do need extra cover up there, will he be ok with bench duty though?

  • 104 HarryHarrison // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:48 AM

Interesting to read Douglas’ last bust up was with Toivonen, apparent clash there already so of Douglas comes I don’t think Toivonen will, also I can’t help but think Llambias and co have gone out to Holland tried to get De Jong, failed and switched there efforts to Douglas, If something was to be agreed on our main priority(which is De Jong) then we’d get that sorted first before Douglas, but as we’re only hearing stories of a fee for Douglas being agreed I see it as we’ve failed in our attempts for De Jong!

  • 105 geordie157 // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:49 AM

Pards keeps saying they will get value for money, De Jong is 21 and rated at 11-12mill, Toivonnen 26 next week and probably 6-7mill. De Jong is a better all round player. Both would be good signings, but De Jong for that price is the better deal, especially in the long term, i don’t Toivonnen will improve much whereas De Jong definately will.

  • 106 rich_toonfan // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:49 AM

    @hotdog

I think de jong will give us options…he can play striker or attacking midfield (he just started being an out and out striker this season according to steve mcclaren)….He would rotate in games with cisse and Ba (they cant play all games, and there may be time when one of them is out of form)

Also competition drives players to work harder and improve so it helps that way.

If you look at man utd they have berbatov, hernandez, rooney and welbeck.

man city have dzeko, aguero, ballotelli and tevez

those two sides were streets ahead of the others this year and options upfront really helped that. It helps being able to rest players and having a lot of options….4-3-3 might work a lot of the time but sometimes we might go 2 up top…all the best managers know you need to mix things up.

    @indian

I agree that he would be good value….and as i have said before a player has 2 values…..his value to the selling club and is value to the buying club. Douglas is worth more to us as he would be a starter than he would be to man city where he would be a bench warmer.

  • 107 colwell // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:50 AM

I can’t see Douglas getting ahead of Saylor. Saylor is just as good as Colo, he scores more and is better in the air but not as good with his feet.

  • 108 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:50 AM

If Twente sell Douglas and De Jong to us then they have sold more or less their three best players. Since Ola John already went to Benfica.

  • 110 geordie157 // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:52 AM

  • 111 rich_toonfan // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:53 AM

    @jesper

it was just a general comment.

I can’t really comment on carrs targets…for all I know he might rate Douglas as the best CB available. Vertongen was set on spurs and even if that changes maybe the club wont spend 10 million on a CB.

I don’t know the ins and outs of our transfer policy so not sure who is our number one target. Im sure carr has identified better players…..

we all can say a better CB that douglas would be Thiago Silva from A.C milan….it doesn’t mean he is available to us.

Maybe douglas is the best target that we can get.

I might be going mental here but why are people complaining about spending 5m on a proven CB, an area we are drastically thin. When you think about it 5m in today’s market is nothing and it’s not like its coming out of our pockets :D

I’ll put it this way who would we rather see next season when Taylor is injured for half a season, Williamson or Douglas. No Brainer really…

  • 121 rich_toonfan // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:59 AM

@hotdog….yeh they aren’t happy but they are 4th choice.

With us de jong would be third choice but as he can play attacking mid and ba did a job on the left there is no reason all 3 couldn’t be on the pitch at once…although that would be unlikely.

fortunately for us our 4th choice striker is shola who will understand he isn’t as good as the other 3 and try to make an impact from the bench.

also we need a good striker for when Ba and Cisse go to the ACON.

  • 122 HarryHarrison // Jul 1, 2012 at 9:59 AM

Also…anyone agree with this…If we were in for Junior Hoilett surely we would use Best as the compensation, IF money is changing hands for Best then I’d predict Hoilett won’t be arriving at St James’ this summer!

it must be true cause it says he is in our 1st team squad on wiki lol number 21. also got de jong in the bag according to wiki so you can stop writing on them 2 lol. honestly though im glad it looks like we could get this guy but if we got quoted 16 million for them both i would like to see de jong come in cos that would just be 11 mil. but having said that i havnt given up hope cause the douglas deal would be 5 million cash done and dusted but maybe the luuk deal would be a bit more complicated i.e selling on fee and 1st team appearances maybe?

  • 124 geordie157 // Jul 1, 2012 at 10:01 AM

Plus with Douglas coming in there isn’t that extra pressure to play Saylor when fit in nearly every game. If the deal does happen, thats a nice headache for Pardew, think Saylor and Colo would start the season with Douglas eased in to adapt to the English style. There is a very slight chance all 3 could start as a back 3 with Debuchy and Santon as wing back and Tiote in front of them.

  • 125 lewytoon // Jul 1, 2012 at 10:03 AM

“It is with some regret we are losing Tiote, he is a physical player and one of Europe’s top players.”  ”But as a player he’s had the chance to go to the United Kingdom.”

I have a few times, mostly Europa league, and he is quite composed on the ball, him and collo, or Taylor and him, collo and Taylor, will give us some nice options with willo to cover, as bad as pple say willo is, I believe that if he does a perch. Ie not a certain starter but a stop gap, he will be a valuable member of the team, hope we also snap up Good. We would be well stocked in the CB department imo:
    Collo
    Saylor
    Douglas
    Willo
    Perch
    Good.

I must agree with Steve. Why on earth do people say ‘Douglas isn’t worth 5 million!’ or ‘why are we spending 10 million on a CF?’.

I mean for fcuk sake we got hammered of Leyton Orient 3 years ago and we all thought we were heading to league 2. Get a grip and enjoy it. Nobody on this blog has a better knoll ledge of football than the management staff of nufc so if they thinks these guys are worth it I’m all for it. 99% of us thought we’d never spend another penny ever again on transfers and all some of you can do Is moan about it.

I understand the need to put things in perspective and assume of we spend X then Y might not come but don’t presume to know anything about our club. No of us are itk (apart from transfer sage) and I for one am just happy to read we could be signi g 5 quality players that in my dreams give us the two things we all want, good football and a bit of success.

If Douglas turns out to be the next Ferdinand and De Jong the next Van Persie would you all be complaining??

In footballing terms 5-10 million is cheap. Look at Liverpool as an example. Look at Jay Rodriguez who signed for Southampton for 7 million and for an extra 3-4 you can get De Jong.

It was the same last year with some of you. ‘don’t think we should buy Ben Arfa’ ‘who’s this Cabaye? Another cheap import’ ‘santon is not going to replace Enrique’.

C’mon guys we finished 5th, narrowly missed 4th and perhaps for the first time in 5-6 years have an exciting summer where players come in and hardly anyone leaves but you won’t let us enjoy our dreams whilst the nightmares devour you.

Nobodies mentioned that Romain Amalfitano has officially signed for us today and nufc.co.uk say they will give us a little update on him on Monday, probably what number he will be given etc.

I’m hopeful we can get deals done for Debuchy, Douglas & Luuk de Jong as they are all very necessary signings to upgrade the squad even more. Anita & Hoilett would be bonus signings really as i’m sure we’ll try get deals done for Good & Gael Bigirimana. If we sign Bigirimana i don’t think we’ll sign Anita but simpley promote Abeid or Gosling to Guthrie’s position last season.

Ins: Debuchy, Good, Douglas, Hoilett, Luuk de Jong
    Bigirimana or/& Anita

You need to stop this about having to name players or that one have to have seen Douglas for 5 games to have an opinion :-)

We have even had polls on this blog about whom would be the better signing and Douglas never came out on top.

I don’t rate him at 5 mil mate and I think he looses his head ones too often and a don’t like his attitude.

I don’t signing him, but he is free next summer so I would wait. Still don’t think any other club are going to pay 5 mil. for him. We just have to wait and see :-)

good point on Tav, hope he signs a new deal. I think we are stuck with Ranger, but Sheff Weds may at least take him on loan again until Jan.

As come African Nations time, we’ll need 3 strikers, so in theory that’s hopefully De Jong, Shola and at the moment Ranger unless i’m forgetting someone.

I’m delighted with this. Unless a guy is out of contract, you can expect to pay 4million upwards for quality, and we badly need some height and power at the back, as well as a threat from corners etc. Beattie, i dont think Santon has fully replaved Enrique yet, in terms of quality. Another season needed. I think i’d prefer hom at RB, but am not certain if he has played there a lot or not. He is still too hesitant in the tackle IMO.
