There is a good chance that Newcastle can get FC Twente center-back Douglas to Newcastle, and the news this morning was that a deal had been done with FC Twente for £5M for the Brazilian player.
Vurnon Anita – Newcastle is a beautiful club
Douglas has just one year left on his contract, and that fee seems high, if it’s accurate, but the 5M could also be in euros, so that would mean it’s £4M.
The fee still seems a lot, for a player who has just one year left on his contract.
And Newcastle seem to be in a neck and neck race with German club Borussia Monchengladbach for Dutch striker Luuk de Jong, and we should know the outcome of that within a day or two.
The third player Newcastle are negotiating for is Lille right back Mathieu Debuchy, and if the news is to be believed, Newcastle have upped their offer to £6M for the top French defender.
And we have already bid £5M for Ajax full-back and defensive midfielder player Vurnon Anita, and in case Newcastle had forgotten about him, the Dutchman had this to say today to Ajax Life:
“Newcastle are a beautiful club. I’m open to anything. We’ll see what happens, but there’s nothing wrong with listening to Ajax and what interested clubs have to say.”
“I will seriously consider anything that comes up. Does it matter to me that Newcastle are not in the Champions League? – No.” “However, I’m an Ajax player for now. I’m focusing on Ajax.”
“Newcastle’s interest has made me think about a potential transfer, though. It’s a sign that I’m on the right track and have to keep this up. I haven’t set a deadline for when I want clarity. I’ll just see how this pans out.”
That’s a strong statement from the Dutch International that he wants to join Newcastle, and we think he would be a good acquisition for the club.
The next step is to see if Newcastle can get a decent deal for the 3 times capped 23 year-old Dutch International, via additional negotiations with Ajax, but we don’t think Newcastle will go much above £5M.
What do you think?

Comment #86Not sounding stupid at all mhurford. I´ve been thinking about this same thing many times.
Jonas has been one of the most consistent performers and the hardest worker in the teamd last couple of seasons. Do people think we`ll have so much flash and skill on the side next season that a working man isn`t needed anymore? That`s almost ungrateful.
Jonas would be one of the first names in my side next season.

Comment #87Thanks Matias, mine too. He may not be the fastest dribbler but damn he works. Few games i get to go to at the stadium i find it almost impossible to comprehend how he works so tirelessly.
