Metro are reporting this morning that FC Twente boss Steve McClaren is trying his best to keep his 24 year-old Brazilian center-back Douglas at the Dutch club.
Douglas – on his way to Newcastle?
There was news in the Daily Express yesterday that Newcastle had agreed a fee of £5M for the player who is now a Dutch citizen, and that news had been reported in other news media outlets.
And it’s also true that McClaren had said he wants to keep Douglas at the club, and he’s said that about Luuk de Jong also, and if we were in Steve’s position, we’d probably be thinking the same thing.
But Luuk de Jong’s agent Louis Laros said yesterday that Luuk would definitely be leaving Twente this summer, because it was the right time for his player to move to a bigger challenge, and as if to counter Steve’s pleas for his client to stay – Lois said this:
“Luuk scored 25 goals in the Dutch league last season, how many more does he need to score? 35?”
And it’s the same with Douglas, who can improve and even become a Dutch International at a bigger club than FC Twente, and that’s just the way things are.
But of course, from Steve McClaren’s view, he is losing two of his best players, and he will need to replace them before the Eredivisie starts up on August 10th.
However, the brutal truth is that Steve is almost certainly not in the decision process on transfer business, and we still expect both players to leave the Dutch club this summer, and maybe this week.
We hope both of them will come to Newcastle and even report for pre-season training at Benton on Thursday morning, although Luuk will need a week or so extra time off, after just coming back from the Euro 2012 tournament with Holland.
We may get some more information on Douglas situation today, and we are waiting with bated breath for any updates to the situation with Luuk de Jong.
Here’s hoping for some really good news today.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Dunno about McClaren trying to block moves, but he certainly has little say in who goes. Cmon DL, use those little grays of yours to get us Luuk and Dougie!

Comment #4Good read Indian. Perhaps a name change is in order? “Indian Ed”?
That is unless you decide against “Wor Shola Forever”. 🙂

Comment #7With the contracts of De Jong and Douglas expiring unfortunately Mclaren has little control in whether these players stay or not as the board of FC Twente will surely want as much for them now rather than get tribunal rates next summer. Come on Llambias and get them signed

Comment #9Is anyone else starting to get peeved by the abuse aimed at Ed for so called misleading or unconnected posts that he makes.
It seems to be trend at the minute and it is both unfair and unjustified.
Ed does not work for nufc but loves them with a passion. Headlines should not be taken for gospel as they are the opinion of Aan who does a tremendous job for us.
If you want 100% fact then go to the official Newcastle site instead of coming on here and insulting the man who allows us to express our opinions in an open forum.
Unless it says ‘official’ then don’t have a go at Ed for his thoughts. It’s not big or clever and I’m surprised he hasn’t kicked some of you off.
Anyway rant over.

Comment #11Well said Beattie @10 – All Ed does is summarise the current stories and rumours doing the rounds and adds his opinion – so it is not his fault if some turn out to be untrue.

Sometimes the titles are misleading.
The content is rarely original and often repeated.
Ed makes money from all the ads.

Comment #16Of course the content is often repeated…. this is a blog based upon news (correct or incorrect) that is on the web about Newcastle so Ed obviously has to read material in order to post his own thoughts.
If people are wanting to give out stick tho surely they should have a go at the offending, misleading article rather than someones personal blog.

Comment #17McClaren is a horrible man! I mean Pards wouldn’t try and block any transfer of one of ours….
Seems to of been forgotten that Tiote came to us on the back of McClarens advice. The bloke is trying to keep. his best players from leaving a team he is rebuilding deems reasonable to me

Havent posted in months but I’ve been noticing what Beattie is on about aswell. People such as Hatem up there slating Ed on the blog.
All the man is doing is bringing us the news as he see’s it and offers us the chance to have our say.
You say the content isnt always original but you’d get p1ssed off if there was only one new article a day wouldn’t you?
I think Ed deserves a lot more respect from some people, either that or they can f*** off to one of the other blogs with all the other children.

Comment #21Indian Magpie, I am relatively new to this site, but already I am fed up with you, this is a NUFC forum and not a free advertising site for you and your articles, even if they are NUFC orientated can you please stop trying to force them on to me, if I want to read them I will look them up, until then please cut with the pushing of your articles, it could turn people away from Ed’s site, and we dont want that do we

Comment #22Just see some alleged man utd fan has racially abused Simmo via twitter. What a dirtbag. Apparently hundreds of toon supporters defended simmo instantly. Maybe he will learn now that we have the best fans in the world and that the grass isn’t always greener. Having debuchy and Simpson competing for 1 spot only strengthens our squad.

Comment #23Ed sometimes does just make things up and put them in there thought to be fair.
Take the last thread for instance ‘Luuk De Jong Decision Expected Within 24 Hours’ there is nothing form nobody to suggest a decision will be made within 24 hours apart from Ed saying it himself. He does get a lot of stick that is undeserved, however sometimes stuff is just amde up and put in there

Comment #24If people don’t like the blog then why not f@ck off. Ed can put what he likes out there, it’s his blog. Everyone else can have their say by commenting on what he puts out on here. Like someone previously said. If you want official news then read the official site. Ed doesn’t force anyone to read his articles, we all do it by choice, so if you don’t like it. Don’t read it.

Comment #25Nick….Could that not be taken as Ed’s view? As in “Ed expects Luuk De Jong decision within 24 hours”?
It all goes back to, if you don’t like it, don’t read it. It’s not mandatory to read the blog (although it does sometimes feel that way 🙂 )
Granted, some of the headlines are over the top, but surely a nicely worded email to Ed would probably be a more appropriate way to put your thoughts across? Perhaps?
On the linking to other peoples blogs etc, an odd link isn’t the end of the world, constant advertisement does get wearying though. Links to Twitter accounts should be banned though 🙂 Maybe i’m behind with the times, but it’s all in the name of the site….TWITter…need I say more?

Comment #28Ibizatoon – I agree, im not having a go at Ed, and all i said was its slightly misleading. If its Ed’s opinion then it shoudln’t be stated as fact. People on here constantly have a go at journo’s for this kind of thing, yet still read the stories every day, but soon as you point out the same thing towards Ed, its ‘you don’t have to read it’. If this is the case then nobody in here should ever complain about a story written in the press ever again, as ‘they don’t have to read it’.
Spoof – don’t tell me what to do. Ill voice my opinion if i so wish, and have as much right to do so as you do with your opinion on the matter

Comment #29Nick69….That one split me 50/50 🙂
Journos are paid money to report “news” and as such should do so.
On the other hand, I agree, if a paper is known for spouting rubbish, don’t read it or buy it, which I don’t…it’s pretty simple really.
On the blog, whilst he may receive some money from ad’s etc, i’m sure he also has hosting costs etc. I don’t believe this blog is Ed’s retirement fund and if it is I would expect a “please donate here” link sometime soon 🙂
The truth is, he’s a fan, putting out the news he finds and sometimes his own opinion on that news. Don’t like it, don’t read it.

Comment #30I totally agree with @9 w/Beattie25
Thank you so much Ed for giving us something to read. It can be so annoying when people just come to complain. If you dont like it dont comment, Ed is doing us a big favour and doing a fantastic job.
I also agree with @21 w/Spoof
I am a new at writing comments here, but am a long time reader and I have been getting tired of Indian Magpie’s constant article pushing here, surely people who want to read your stuff already have your website bookmarked no need to push it on the rest of us, its similar to that fellow that always says add me on twitter, both annoying somewhat. This in the end is Ed’s blog not Indian Magpie’s.

I agree that twitter guy is really too annoying he should be banned.
As for Indian he has some good comments and so so comments but he is free to say what he wants to say he has that right. With regards to his blog truth be told I dont mind it if he puts something up once in a while but not the same thing on different threads, that is where it gets to be a bit too much for my own taste. I think we might be able to agree on that?

Comment #34ibizatoon – theres a reason theres a comments box at the bottom, its to comment on what has been written, simple. It doesnt say, only comment if you agree with everything written does it? So I will comment, and read as much as I like wether I agree or disagree with what ahs been written. Thats whats blogs are for
