Last week Newcastle significantly increased their activity in the transfer market and are at the moment in negotiations for four players, and maybe even five.
Mathieu Debuchy – Newcastle upped their bid to £6M
Things are on a knife edge with Newcastle’s negotiations with FC Twente for two of their top players – 21 year-old striker Luuk de Jong, and Brazilian center-back Douglas.
And Derek LLambias and Lee Charnley will agin be meeting today in Enschede in Holland, with the goal being to agree a fee for both of these players, and then agree terms with each of the players.
So the next 24 hours could be vital for Newcastle, especially for Luuk de Jong, with other top clubs including Borrusia Monchengladbach in for the youngster, and the German club are probably the biggest threat to Newcastle.
Newcastle also are waiting news from French club Lille on their improved bid of £6M for right-back Mathie Debuchy, and we suppose the good news is that no other big clubs seemed to have made a move for the top class full-back.
And news in the local press today that Newcastle will be tying up a deal for Melbourne Heart defender Curtis Good, and the fee is expected to be for £400K, and Curtis will start his career on Tyneside in the Development squad, just like Mehdi Abeid did last summer.
But we expect Curtis to push to become part of the first team squad almost immediately, if he’s as good as we think he is, just as the young Frenchman from Lens did last pre-season.
So those are the four players Newcastle are after this week, and if they can get all four to Tyneside, that would be just fantastic.
And probably the next player in line after those four, is 23 year-old Ajax full back Vurnon Anita, and Newcastle have already had a bid of £5M turned down by his club Ajax.
The player is also comfortable in defensive midfield, and he let it be known yesterday that he was very interested in joining Newcastle United – which he called a beautiful club.
We’d have to agree with him on that one – hey – sign him up!
But of all those players, the two players Newcastle fans seem most keen on, are Mathieu Debuchy and Luuk de Jong, and if we can get these two to Tyneside, it will have been a massive coup by Newcastle United this summer.
