Newcastle Move For Douglas Complicated – But Deal Likely

9:04 am, Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 25 Comments

It still seems likely that Newcastle will be bringing in Douglas of FC Twente this summer, but they will have to allow the player to stay in Holland through August,  so he can meet the requirements of  playing for Holland.

Douglas – Newcastle agree fee of £5M,  or maybe it’s £4M?

We reported on this complication back in late April, and it’s so he can rack up five years living in Holland, and meet the FIFA residency rules, and be eligible to play for the national side – and he has to stay in Holland through the end of August.

And since Newcastle knew about this a few months ago, they must be willing to abide by that, if they have gone back in with a more than decent bid for the 6’4″ powerful Brazilian.

It seems from the news over the weekend, that Newcastle have met FC Twente’s asking price for the player which is 5M, and that’s either £5M or £4M, if it’s in euros, which is the more likely.

And we also hope it’s the £4M, because this player has only one year left on his contract at FC Twente, and that price seems high, well at least for Newcastle.

Douglas will take a little longer to get used to things at Newcastle, but the club still have Fabricio Coloccini, Steven Taylor (back from his Achilles injury), and Mike Williamson for center-back, so we should be able to manage until the Brazilian arrives on Tyneside.

If this news is all true we could even have an announcement from Newcastle on the signing of Douglas later this week.

We hope so.

Comments welcome.

Oh Dear My head is going rouind in circles.

I am surprised that he was the FIRST CHOICE

  • 2 steinhof // Jul 3, 2012 at 9:11 AM

im sure he wasn’t first choice but maybe he’s first choice that fits in with our logical recruitment policy?

Very worried about his temprement, he has a hot head from what I’ve seen, far too many red cards and appauling behaviour when he has been sent off. He is in for a shock if he repeats that behaviour in our league.

Having said that he is still young hopefully he’s learnt from his mistakes. He’s certainly a talented player with plenty of potential.

Couldn’t Douglas get a look-a-like to stay in Holland till August so he can get Dutch citizenship as well as coming on Pre-Season? ;P

I don’t even think the Journos knows what is up and down anymore :) lol

We will have to wait till the end of August before we can sign him, but so what, he will only miss two or three games and with Saylor back to partner Colo it would not be a problem, the only downside is that he would miss pre-season which would have been of great benefit to his, especially as he may need time to settle in, mind Cisse didn’t need time to settle in so it may not be that important

does look like a CB you wouldn’t want to play against .. very strong and committed .. Carr’s type of player .. hope Pardew can manage that angry streak .. he is a player our team needs IMO.. hope De Jong hapens as well though ..if not that guy from Malaga (Venezuelan) if he’s available at the right price..

I am all for value for money but maybe we should make sure we get luuk and debuchy by possibly paying the current rate. This would help us achieve another European place possibly cl and then next season play hard ball when we may not be as desperate.

bambam….So let everyone know that we’re a tough outfit to deal with….unless we’re desperate?

That’ll certainly make people take us seriously :)

Salomon Rondon his name is .. could be too expensive though

Does he have to work and live in Holland or just live there?

If its both, buy him and loan him to Twente til end of August…. then its all done and dusted with no potential complications.

If its just live then we can buy him and take him on our pre season trips as long as he doesn’t officially move out of Holland til the end of August.

we could also get Sturridge instead of LDJ

  • 16 gazza85 // Jul 3, 2012 at 9:25 AM

Sturridge won’t go for just £10 million plus his wages will be sky high.

  • 17 Eyeball81 // Jul 3, 2012 at 9:29 AM

To be fair if he is good for the team then fine….Im still a little worried that (either his or his agent) the attitude was “a bigger club than newcastle are interested”….dont want anyone who thinks they are bigger than the club to upset the applecart!!!

  • 18 Nick 69 // Jul 3, 2012 at 9:32 AM

Eyeball81 – how does him saying a bigger club than us want him, mean he thinks he’s bigger than the club? He is just telling the truth. He never said he’d rather go to a bigger club, he stated a fact that a bigger club wants him

  • 19 LEROI // Jul 3, 2012 at 9:36 AM

why is there always an f’n stupid catch when we sign someone WHY? I’m getting pretty, pretty, pretty frustrated now! 1.This Douglas wanting to play for holland thing! 2. We’ve sold the best up & coming young english keepers to those spl pretenders! 3.we’ve sold our best out & out cover in the striker department! 4. Twente are p#ssing us around with the de jong deal so we can’t replace the afore mentioned forward! 5. We just haven’t actually signed anyone apart from an unknown french ligue2 player!

  • 20 markmac // Jul 3, 2012 at 9:41 AM

@15 AND 16, hes a good player but i think he’s a bit greedy, dont you think?

  • 21 Spoof // Jul 3, 2012 at 9:48 AM

Nick 69, your hitting your head against a brick wall m8, on other sites I have questioned why Douglas’ comment has turned them against him, it doesn’t make sense to me either, how saying a bigger club than us is interested in him is not belittling us in any way, shape or form, its rumoured that the bigger club could have been Juventus, so if that is true then Douglas was indeed correct, but how that is enough for some of our fans to instantly dislike him and not want him to sign for us is a mystery

  • 22 Rotonda heights // Jul 3, 2012 at 9:52 AM

could have rondon for peanuts 18 months ago

  • 23 sweendog // Jul 3, 2012 at 10:03 AM

Rotonda heights .. agreed .. Malaga don’t need money either .. realistically we’re getting Junior Hoilett I reckon .. but Rondon’s got that enigma of a possible Asprilla type player..

  • 24 jesperfuglsang // Jul 3, 2012 at 10:16 AM

    Spoof

that is because the way he was quoted made him come of arrogant mate ;)

  • 25 Eyeball81 // Jul 3, 2012 at 10:19 AM

Nick 69….just personal opinion mate, I want players who want to play for newcastle and not see us as a stepping stone or sloppy seconds.
