There’s no good news on Newcastle’s pursuit if Luuk de Jong or Douglas this morning, and Derek LLambias and Lee Charnley left Holland yesterday with no deals signed for Newcastle.
Mathieu Debuchy – wants to join Newcastle – that’s a good start
But there could be better news this week, with one of our other top targets Matthieu Debuchy, because there is news he is expected to tell Lille he wants to join Newcastle, and he’s expected to do that before the end of the week.
Newcastle lodged an increased bid of £6M for the French International last Friday, and we’ve heard precious little about that since then.
That’s because the next day, there was news that Derek LLambias and Lee Charnley were in Holland trying to wrap up the deals for both de Jong and Douglas, and unfortunately that’s come up short.
Getting Debuchy to Newcastle may also prove difficult, because Lille will remember getting only €5M for Yohan Cabaye, who has become a top French International since coming to Tyneside last June, and the French club will want to make sure they get their moneys worth for Debuchy.
That’s also what’s causing Twente to want more money for their players, because we got Cheick Tiote from them only two summers ago for £3.5M, and how much is he worth today?
So Newcastle’s past successes in the transfer market are making it more difficult these days to get good deals, but that’s also to be expected, and we think Mike Ashley and Derek LLambias will still want top deals.
But it may be that the top deals of the future are bringing in some top class younger players, when they are still under the radar screen of top clubs.
We are hopeful of getting Mathieu Debuchy to Tyneside, and he will return form his holiday later this week, and has a meeting arranged with Lille officials.
But again the problem could be the fee, and we don’t think Lille will simply accept the new and improved £6M bid – they will want more, and they will probably hope that other clubs like Chelsea will come into the action, and create a public auction.
And that’s the last thing Newcastle will want – but we are still hopeful that Mathieu will arrive, because he seems very keen to come to Tyneside.
However, The Journal is reporting today that since Debuchy has been such a good servant of the club, having played for the first team since 2004, they will not make it difficult, and if that’s true Newcastle may even have an easy passage with Debuchy.
We certainly hope so, because he would be a fantastic acquisition for Newcastle United.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Nice article Ed, need to get rid of this doom and gloom. The boy Debuchy is statistically the best RB in the french League. And unlike Simpson can actually back that claim up with his ability.
I am so predictable.

Schalke have confirmed the signing of Swiss international winger Tranquillo Barnetta on a 3-year deal. Free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen.

And personally think Perch would do a good job at CB if played with Saylor or Douglas, next to Collo though they lack a little presence. Willo should be 5th choice IMO.

Teamstoof…To be fair, he probably needed a transfer to pay the ongoing hotel bill. He’ll be working for free at this rate
Check @4…..Have no problem with Perch at CB after last season’s performance, but he does lack presence in the air, which can be a problem.
Different games, different tactics.
8 pieceofpapiss // Jul 4, 2012 at 9:22 AM
Debuchy and Douglas would be great business, still need another striker.
I just wonder where Pardew is going to focus his efforts next season. Obviously the league is a priority but which of the 3 cups (FA, League, Europa) do we push for?
Personally, Europa cup is the one to go for. The majority of our players have experience playing against continental opponents, but the downside of that is the length of the campaign. Will it burn us out towards the end of the season?
9 Beattie25 // Jul 4, 2012 at 9:28 AM
Sorry ibiza my phone crashed and I didn’t complete my full post but here it is again (just read after Douglas)
Ibiza we have found middle ground! We don’t need 10 first teamers just 2 or 3. It would be nice to have loads of signings but its not needed.
In truth and IMO we only need 2 first team players to add to the starting 11. I’d say a RB to take us to the next level and a CM to evolve our tactics and formation.
De Jong seems a luxury buy to me and Douglas seems an odd deal too. We need players to push the starting 11 and make an impact when called upon not to upset the apple cart by complaining that thief not playing enough which is a problem when you ave internationals sitting on the bench which Douglas and De Jong would probably do a lot in all honesty (sitting not complaining).
It’s good to have a football manager team filled with stars but in reality we need to look at Arsenal who are not filled with stars but great youngsters that can do a great job coming off the bench and push the senior players all the way and don’t mind being a sub.

Re last post
All last week I really thought I wanted De Jong but now I think the 10 million could be better spent. Yeah he could be worth 30 million in the future but why not use that 10 million to buy 2 really exciting youth propects from elsewhere. Not only would that add depth the potential for return is double.
Also I still don’t think rangers career is over at ST James park.
14 Twatter // Jul 4, 2012 at 9:33 AM
Just reading the last article’s comments and I must say a few of you are on cloud cuckoo land. To say it’s not a big deal when we’ve already lost Best, Guthrie and Lovenkrands and are going to be playing almost twice as many matches this year is ridiculous. Our squad was always small, now it’s even smaller. You might say I’m just being negative but we can’t rely on reserve players to make up the rest of our squad, it’s just pathetic. I just hope we get some players in fast.
15 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jul 4, 2012 at 9:35 AM
Teamstoof….Yes and No. It’s not really a position we’re actively trying to fill, especially not at his level or wages. Shame, a good player.
Hater….Come on now, hate’s a bit strong, surely?
Beattie…Indeed. It is the Arsenal model we’re following after all, not the Man City disaster (Que abuse along the lines of – “What, winning the league type of disaster”)
16 Hencha Boii // Jul 4, 2012 at 9:36 AM

17 Rotonda heights // Jul 4, 2012 at 9:36 AM
I get that we need new players, but an awful lot we’ve yet to really see in any serious sustained action. or who have been long term injuries
Amaltifano
Vuksic
Abeid
Ferguson
Marveux
Obertan (the jury’s out)
Saylor
Sameobi
Gosling (not a fan of, but he’s here)
* * * * *
Campbell
Streete
That’s 12 just there and it sounds like Debuchy and Douglas could be on the way.
18 Mark29Hungary // Jul 4, 2012 at 9:39 AM
Check,
Perch was poor as a CB but he has done the job as a DM. He’s a good alternative if Tiote or Cabaye out for something.
About Debuchy: Sing him, sing him, sing him.
That will be the end of Simmo’s first team career, but I dont care.

Twatter…No one is saying it’s a good idea not to bring in any players, just not to expect a starter for each player that has left, who were not starters anyway.
We clearly need some depth, that is there for all to see, but these fantasy wish lists are just not going to come through imo.
We’re one or two starters away from a really great team and then the squad needs padding out, but this wont all happen this summer.

Ibiza not just man city.
It’s good to have competition but at what price?
Every year Chelsea, man ure, Liverfool and spuds have discontent and disharmony. Our team is built on spirit and team work and to throw a spanner into those works would be suicide.
I’d rather have Debuchy and Anita and then 5 or 6 19-21 year olds all fighting and growing together than internationals frustrated on the bench. Remember the abuse Ba got away at Swansea when he stormed off after being substitutes. The doom and gloom crew would have a field day

From the little I have seen of Douglas it would be a case of who plays alonside him, Saylor or Colo, he really does look that good from what I have seen.
Many Dutch fans were moaning about Fifa’s 5 year residence rule, he had a Dutch passport before the Euro’s but still could not play for them due to this rule, to most of the Dutch fans [not just the Twente fans] he is the best Dutch CB by the proverbial mile, either Colo or Saylor would be second choice, nice problem for Pardew

Ed, this is just my opinion, but there has been no confirmed news or any indications that we have lodged a £ 5 mil for Douglas.
And with Douglas wanting Dutch citizenship and therefor has to wait until late August to join us, I think we are looking elsewhere
Just my opinion, but I can assure you it is just a profound as the lazy journos’
lol
I think we might go for him next summer for free
Debuchy, Good and Hoillet will arrive I think. I don’t know what they will do for a CB or CM, but I don’t think we will sign an expensive forward.
…we might go for a U21; just a hunch
Any thoughts?
34 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 4, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Perch & Raylor both can do a job, but we don’t want to see them starting EPL games.
35 Twatter // Jul 4, 2012 at 9:49 AM
If the squad isn’t going to be padded out this summer, when will it? And if you think it isn’t, why was it wise to sell existing and already experienced squad players like Best etc.? I know he’s not a worldbeater but people are overhyping these young players who have only played a few games between them. We cannot and should not be relying on youngsters.. I just pray we get lots of players in. Need lots of defensive backup including LB cover which hardly anyone seems to have mentioned.

My thoughts are that I have no idea who we’re actually after or who we can actually bring in.
I do think decent FB’s and CB’s are being looked at and that they want some young, but pushing the starters CM’s and CF’s.
The rest will be young lads with a bright future in black and white stripes imo.

41 check the toastie // Jul 4, 2012 at 9:55 AM
Perchinho was good at centre back all year barring Norwich (next to simpson) away, was brilliant at both Swansea , WBA and Liverpool at home, really some people shouldnt make things up.
He was even good against Chelsea in his first appearance when there was a collective grown to meet him coming on the pitch. The boy is massively underrrated.
And he is no midfielder, he started there twice against Bolton at home and spurs away and was out of his depth. He may be OK to bring on as a sub if Pardew wants to go negative and kill the game, but personally dont like the team doing that anyway. (i admit it did work well at times last year though.)

Hatem…Bit harsh mate
– Maybe he was looking for some feedback?
Twatter….Is our squad better than it was 2 years ago? Has it steadily improved each window?
If we’re to play 4-3-3 mostly, who can make up the front 3 with our current squad? I make the list something like:
Cisse
Ba
Shola
Ranger??
Arfa
Guti
Obertan
Marveaux
Gosling
Amalfitano
Vuckic
Granted some of them may be deployed in the middle 3, but that’s 11 players there and I’m sure i’m probably missing some and there will likely be someone coming in.
It’s not exactly terrible, is it?
46 jesperfuglsang // Jul 4, 2012 at 10:02 AM
Ibizatoon
I probably think your are spot on about most of the signings being youngsters pushing for the first team.
I hope Debuchy will sign and I have a funny feeling with Hoillet being free that we will go for him too…
47 jesperfuglsang // Jul 4, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Ibiza
That is why I don’t think we will bring in an expensive forward. There many combo’s there:
Ba – Papisto – HBA
Marveaux – Papisto – HBA
Guti – Papisto – HBA
Ba can play in the middle of the park as well and I even think Vuckic can play on the left. Obertan can fill in on the right so we have options.
Ameobi as third choice striker. If we got a tricky, fast youngster who play wide I think we are good to go upfront mate
…but what the hell do I know lol
48 Twatter // Jul 4, 2012 at 10:09 AM
That’s our front 3… You forgot to mention the lack of defensive depth, and besides last time I checked Gosling wasn’t a striker.
P.S: Mclaren’s on Sky Sports speaking to Horseface David Craig as I type.
49 magpiebop // Jul 4, 2012 at 10:15 AM
Sack off the Twente deals now they’re messing us about. Anyway Guidetti and Vertonghen have better reputations and would prefer them to be honest. We already have Colo, Taylor, Williamson and with Good and Streete to back them up. Are we really that short at the back? Some on here think Williamson isn’t good enough but apart from the games just after being rushed back from injury, managed to gain fitness and the form followed to help us have a good run in and keep the club above Chelski and Liverfool.
With Chelsea officially the best in Europe but finishing sixth behind us in the league devalues the European competition and elevates the Premier league title as the top prize in world club football and the place to play in world football for top players. Messi needs to join our league to prove himself out of his comfort zone and play in a league where he will get tackled and not the poncy Spanish league. After all Ronaldo finds it too easy over there and must regret his move, unless of course he just went for the adulation!
50 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jul 4, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Twatter….I’m pretty sure I said that was the front 3, but thanks for pointing that out. I also said some of those would probably be played in the middle 3 and not the attacking 3, but it gives us some options. Shall I try again then?
GK – Krul, Elliot and Ole (I think). If Krul is injured i’d be sh*tt*ng it, but don’t think we can keep too much better than Elliot for the bench, sadly.
FB – Simmo (if leaves, then replace, Santon, Tav, Fergie (is an option), Gutti (is an option), Raylor, Perch.
I have said on many occasions, this area does need strengthening.
CB – Collo, Saylor, Willo, Perch (is an option).
This area def needs someone bringing in, but we seem to be addressing this position.
To save arguing, I will group midfield and strikers together, as the formations will change. Basically we’ll have 6 mid / att players on the pitch.
1. Cisse
2. Ba
3. Shola Ameobi
4. Sammy Ameobi
5. Ranger
6. Arfa
7. Marveaux
8. Obertan
9. Guti
10. Gosling
11. Amalfitano
12. Vuckic
13. Cabaye
14. Tiote
15. Ferguson

So we only need 2 new players?
Who will score our goals during the acon?
We need
1 top class forward plus 1 young forward
1 top class centre half
1 rb
1 lb cover for Santon
1 cm
So in my humble opinion we need 6 extra players considering the acon and extra euro games
55 geordie157 // Jul 4, 2012 at 10:27 AM

56 Valci // Jul 4, 2012 at 10:30 AM
@ rotonda heights
Spanish team is Barca + Real and little else. And honestly when these 2 teams get 80% of the television contract money between themselves and the rest of the league shares the remaining 20% it’s no surprise that only these 2 teams matter. Its not a real championship sorry to say.
Real gets 12 times the cash from tv rights compared to the bottom team in the spanish league whereas in EPL ManCity get 1,5-2 times the money the last team gets. So basically the spanish league is not a fair competition.
Also you made a comment on another thread about “lumbering oafs” or some such when talking about big strikers (1,80-1,90m in height). I’m not gonna write the whole thing again but i’ll point you towards Zlatan Ibrahimovich which can hardly be called lumbering or Arsenal recent transfer Olivier Giroud. The list is long but your prejudice was obvious from your post.
57 jesperfuglsang // Jul 4, 2012 at 10:33 AM
I my book we just need:
A young forward, who can play wide
A cover CB; preferably young
A new RB
A CM; Viera kind of player and preferably young
Going though Ibiza’s list we seem to have plenty of first team players – we need a squad of 22-23 players, everyone else should be youngsters.
