Newcastle are certainly not have too much luck with some of their targets, at least not at the moment, with news today that a Russian club have come in for their center-back target Douglas.
Douglas - Russian club have matched Newcastle fee for him
It’s being reported by the Northern Echo that sources in Enschede are saying a Russian club has come in and matched Newcastle’s offer of £5M for the 6’4″ center-back, and now they want to talk to the Brazilian.
The deal is being delayed until late August, so that the player can meet requirements of five consecutive years living in Holland, required by FIFA before he can play for the Dutch National side.
But what we don’t understand is why the deal cannot be completed now, and then Douglas moves to Tyneside in late August, otherwise Newcastle are going to be one of a number of clubs coming after Douglas.
The 24-year-old has been linked with Wolfsburg, Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, and he has boasted there is a bigger club interested in him than Newcastle, and we think that club is Juventus, the Italian Champions.
Douglas is desperate to join a club that will further his ambitions of becoming a full Holland International, and certainly he should look at what the move to Newcastle did for Yohan Cabaye, who twelve months later is now a top player for France, and looked an excellent player during Euro 2012.
However, the good news is that Douglas is telling friends that his move to Newcastle will be his next step, and we just hope Newcastle have somehow tied this player up, and don’t have top wait until late August.
Newcastle were 5th top of the best league in the world last season, and the Premier League matches are routinely relayed live around the world, with growing viewer interest in the top English League.
But some Russian clubs these days are very rich, and could presumably offer him a huge wage, and that’s always possible, and to be truthful we’re not entirely sold on this lad’s character at the moment.
He seems like a good and powerful center-back, and certainly Alan Pardew is said to be keen to bring him to Tyneside, but until this deal is signed, sealed and delivered, anything can still happen.
What do you think?

Not what I wanted to see! Though I need to hear which Russian club has stepped forward before worrying too much, surely the big spenders like Anzhi aren’t looking at a CB valued near £5.

Sakho please
Maybe a swap for Ba so the release clause means jack all?
IMO it’s only a matter of time before one of the clubs linked with Ba make a move…

I would rather have Sakho than Douglas like, and Douglas isn’t a bad player at all. I just think long term Sakho will be the better player, and retain his market value a lot longer.

Ed, I actually understand your point, and answer I think is we haven’t bid £ 5 mil for him.
I say let the Russian club, if there is a Russian club whom have bid £ 5 mil, have him
Highly doubt it.

No need to panic, like the swap idea though. Then get 2-3 young forwards with potential, Guidetti, Rhodes? & another. If simmo goes good luck to him and hope it is Matthieu for a medica on friday.

jesper -
maybe the problem is that until all his agents who want a cut are identified, Enschede won’t know how much they are getting.

With the way NUFC do their business, its unlikely anyone will know exactly whats going on until the player is standing on the steps of SJP in a stripey jumper!!!!

I’d rather have sakho and spend an extra couple of million to make transfer 7mil than 5 on Douglas. Purely because I see them at a similar level in terms on ability and with sakho only 22 he has a few more years until he reaches his prime so the extra money payed can be the potential. Also at only 22 he has already captained PSG which means he could be ours one day if we have him at us long enough. Sakho can still have 10 years in him as a premiership/international striker of we sign him and think its better for the club to sign sakho, both short and long term

Has Mbiwa signed anywhere yet?
21 wynsleap // Jul 5, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Really think it’s about time the Toon started to tie up some of these transfers. The players are coming back now and the signings should be in place to gel pre-season with the current squad.
All we seem to hear about at the moment is players going out. I can see Beardsley, Stone and Donachie being called into action at this rate if we don’t start to get players “over the line” soon.
Don’t they know we are in Europe this season?
22 gfp13 // Jul 5, 2012 at 9:55 AM
Wynsleap
Maybe all the confusion of Chelsea winning the CL and putting tottenham out of that made Ashley think we went out of Europe too. I do hope they realise we are still in Europe though haha
