Newcastle have been interested in the 22 year-old for over a year now, and he became a free agent last Sunday.
Junior Hoilett – wage demands scare off the Magpies
Blackburn’s Canadian winger Junior Hoilett has refused to sign a new contract at Blackburn for a year now, and it seems that he is no longer on Newcastle’s radar screen either.
The Evening Chronicle is reporting this morning that Newcastle have been put off by the youngster’s wage demands, which are said to be around £50K/week, and it’s a case of once bitten twice shy with Newcastle.
While Hoilett looks like a very good player in the making, asking for as much as £50K/week at just 22 is asking a bit much, and maybe he can get that wage at some other club, but not at the Magpies.
Not these days anyway.
Newcastle are still smarting form having to pay Xisco £50K/week over the last four years, with the former Spanish U21 striker turning out to be nowhere near good enough to play in the Premier League,
And add to that the £5.7M transfer fee and it was a bad deal for the Magpies, who may well have to pay out the last year of the lad’s contract, since he’s unlikely to want to be transferred this summer, even though Newcastle will once again try to unload him.
Hoilett looks a better player than Xisco, but Mike Ashley and company have shown they will pay out big bucks, but only to players who have proved their worth at Newcastle - like Coloccini, Gutierrez and Krul, to name three examples.
It’s a pity with Hoilett, but it seems Newcastle have passed up the chance to sign the 22 year-old, and he would probably cost around £5M in compensation too.
