We reported the news late last night, and there is other news coming through that 18 year-old Coventry midfielder Gael Bigirimana will have a medical at Newcastle today, and sign on for Newcastle United.
Gael Bigirimana - having medical at Newcastle on Friday
Newcastle have been linked with this player for about three months and he has been compared with Michael Essien, such is the all action play of the lad, and of course he was the Championship Apprentice of the Season in 2011-2012, and put in some great performances for his club Coventry City.
Coventry were relegated to League One last season, and it is thought they would be open to a good offer for their top youngster, and it seems like Newcastle have made a suitable deal with the Sky Blues.
The top youngster was born in Burundia, and moved with his mother in 2004 to England, having also spent time living in Uganda.
And Andy Thorn his manager, who himself has first hand experience of moving to a big club like Newcastle, had this to say about his player:
“He has acquitted himself well.” “Gael’s is an amazing story and just shows with the right dedication, work ethic and commitment what you can actually achieve.”
“Gael’s a good talent but he’s still got a heck of a lot to learn and I’d be really disappointed if he left.” “I was a young lad when I went to Newcastle.”
“They are a massive club and if you aren’t careful it eats you up if you go too soon, so you have to be very careful.”
And when the youngster won the Championship Apprentice of the Season in March, the Coventry City Academy manager Gregor Rioch had this to say about the lad on the club’s official site:
“We are all so proud of Gael. It’s no less than he deserves.” “The lad is a shining example of what our Academy system is about and the way he has taken this season in his stride has been fantastic to watch.”
“He’s a superb young lad to work with and the way we have watched him develop into a player and a young man off the pitch has been fantastic.” “He deserves all the congratulations he gets from this.”
“He has a good touch and has shown a maturity beyond his years”
Newcastle watched the youngster often last season, as he was getting the name of being one of the top youngsters playing in England, and we believe this is one of the players Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said yesterday was close to joining Newcastle.
Bigirimana made 26 appearances for Coventry last season, and on May 31st we reported that Newcastle had made an offer for the player, which was thought to be anywhere between £500K and £1M.
On June 16th a source close to the player had this to say to the Daily Star:
“The boy is very highly rated and it is clear he possesses bundles of talent.” “A lot of Premier League clubs were watching him towards the end of the season and nobody more than Newcastle, who were regular visitors to the Ricoh Stadium.”
“Coventry know they face a real fight to keep him after their relegation from the Championship and if a big enough bid comes in they will have to take it.”
Gael Bigirimana, who turns 19 in October, will probably be part of the Development squad at Newcastle, although we wouldn’t be surprised if he made a quick move into the first team squad at Newcastle next season.
This is a very good signing for Newcastle United, with lots of clubs after the talented 18 year-old, and it’s signings like this that will guarantee Newcastle success in the years ahead.
Well at least that’s what we are hoping for.
