We reported last Wednesday that Paris-Saint Germain’s top class defender Mamadou Sakho was available, after his French club said they would let him leave in the summer.
Mamadou Sakho – top young PSG defender
Sakho lost his place in the first team towards the end of last season, and he is looking for first team football, and if he cannot regain his place he would rather leave for first team opportunities elsewhere.
The current PSG and former Chelsea manager, Carlo Ancelotti, is trying to bring in a new center-back, so lets hope he’s not too interested in a certain 6’4″ Brazilian called Douglas, at FC Twente.
When Sakho was made available, the news is that Newcastle were immediately informed of the status of the 9 times capped French International, although we think he could be a little expensive for Newcastle.
This lad is highly rated and probably worth close to £10M, but the fee last summer was said top be £15M when a number of top clubs were said to be interested in signing him.
Sakho doesn’t turn 23 until next February, and he has played for all the French Youth sides from U16 through U21, and he has played for the full France side 5 times, and the 6’2″ Paris-born player can play at either center-back or left back.
He’s obviously a talented player, but there’s probably better value elsewhere – like £5M for 24 year-old 6’4″ FC Twente center-back Douglas as one example.
But we don’t feel too confident about Newcastle getting Douglas to Newcastle in late August.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Ibiza I cannot even remember my own detective name. It feels so long ago. I swear this transfer window makes time move slower! It’s like bullet time in the matrix only less exciting

It means a lot to see my work get the recognition it so rightfully deserves.
Maybe in time when people look back on this blog my artistic flair will be looked upon with such envy that only Van Gough can draw a parallel. Hated in life, loved in death.
I’m going to cut off somebodies ear because I am too scared to lop off my own lobe.

Comment #7darren…”made up pap”….how can a question like “Newcastle Interested In Top French Center-Back?” be made up? It is a question put out there to inspire discussion, views, etc.
Might be unlikely, but ease up

Comment #11@darrenfletcher88 people like you do my head in! I work in online journalism so let me explain to you how it works. If Ed hears a story about Newcastle of course he is going to report it on his blog…THAT’S HIS JOB!!!! By doing so we then click on the link etc and he gets lots of page impressions and unique users. The result of that is, with any luck, advertisers want to PAY to have their advert on Ed’s blog and therefore he can AFFORD to keep offering us a brilliant service FREE OF CHARGE. If you don’t like what he’s doing then simply don’t come on here but posting a comment critiquing HIS blog is just rude. He does an amazing job with this blog and the fact that most posts gain a lot of ‘comments’ relating to the STORY highlights this. If you have nothing of interest to say I suggest you keep quiet.

Comment #20Pap? Don’t be daft. The title of the article says it all.
A good young centre back has become available, and no doubt his agents will have been in touch with Newcastle and it’s well known we’re looking for someone in that position.
So the article headline is a question mark…are we interested? I’d be very surprised if we spent £10M on this lad.

Hence the word speculation, you should know by now most players we sign are bolts out of the blue and very little is heard until they are at the training ground, Cabaye being the exeption that is.

Comment #27Saylor wouldn’t be happy if Sakho was signed for £10M. Surely he would expect to start if signed for that amount?
Would rather spend less money on getting someone to push hard with Saylor, with Big Mike as 4th choice. Keep the rest for strengthening elsewhere.

Comment #28Sakho rather than Douglas erm yes please. We’d still need the cover whether Saylor was fit or not. Bookings, injuries and fixture pile ups.

Comment #29Something with a ‘?’ at the end is a question…as many others have stated. At no point has ed stated newcastle are interested in Sakho he simply questioned are we?…could we be? Low and behold the question has done its job we are now debating the subject matter…leave your small minded quotes off the blog unless you have something of interest to say.

Comment #30About whether or not Sakho would be the better buy compared to Douglas does depend on what PSG would want for the player does it not?
I am no expert, but from what I have seen of Douglas and heard (not on this blog though) he’s not a £ 10 mil player on any day and with his contract running surely £ 5 mil is not that well spend.
Sakho was a £ 15 mil player at least before he fell down the picking order at PSG (most say I have not idea why), so if we could him for less than £ 8 mil. I would say he’s the better buy of the two.
Plus I rate him higher than Douglas and Sakho is more versatile. Again more value for your money.
…guess the question would PSG sell; it is not like they need the money.

Comment #34Been reading for a year now and decided to get involved in the banter. I say get him signed up. He may cost considerably more than Douglas but he is twice the player and has four times the potential, and being french also helps. Wages might be a stumbling block.

Comment #35I would personally sign:
Sakho/Aldereweild – £6-8m
Debuchy – £6m
Cissokho – £6m
Hoilett – Free
Anita – £6M
Luuk De Jong – £11m
Guidetti or Lukaku on loan
Michael Dawson or Seb Bassong on loan
Total expenditure = £35m
It’s a real shame that Vertonghen and Sigurdsson have gone to Spurs. We need to get some of these alleged signings over the line.
Think Aldereweild and Sakho are more exciting defenders than Douglas.
If we are going to deploy Debuchy as a right-winger, then signing Cissokho is a must.

Comment #36Hopefully Swansea or Reading will pay £1.5m for Williamson and also around £2.5m for Simpson.
Gosling, Obertan and Sammi Ameobi should be loaned to Blackburn.
Abeid and Vuckic will be needed as squad players.

Comment #37He’s much better than Douglas, however what are Newcastle’s targets. If Newcastle equal or better last season, and reach the group stages, then I think forking out for a good young CB as a signing to last, would be value for money.
