Newcastle’s Top Free Agents Find New Clubs

2:19 pm, Tuesday, July 10th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 224 Comments

Two of Newcastle’s free agents have fixed themselves up at new clubs, with Danish International Peter Lovenkrands joining Lee Clark at Birmingham City, and former England International Alan Smith joining MK Dons, the club he played for on loan since January.

Peter Lovenkrands - in Birmingham colors

Alan Smith was offered a coaching role by Alan Pardew at Newcastle, but it seems he wants to keep playing a few more years.

This is that statement MK Dons released on 31 year-old Alan:

“The former Manchester United and England star was a huge hit with the fans during his loan period with the club last season and always expressed his desire to stay at stadiummk.

“After battling against a number of other clubs for Smith’s signature, Karl Robinson will be delighted at sealing the permanent signing of his number one summer target.”

Alan suffered a very serious broken ankle while at Manchester United and that curtailed hios play as a striker and he settled in as a holding midfielder and played very well for Newcastle during out relegation season.

Peter signed a two year deal at Birmingham, where Lee Clark is the manager, and Peter had this to say about his new club:

“Birmingham is a fantastic club, I have no problem being in the championship, it’s a tough league, I was there with Newcastle and enjoyed it.”

“Birmingham have great fans, I’m looking forward to trying to get some goals for them”

Peter was one of the main goalscorers for Newcastle in the Championship promotion season, hitting 16 goals in just 32 appearances, and he can still knock that ball into the back of the net.

Alan Smith played 94 times for Newcastle and 35 times in our promotion season and was signed from Manchester United by big Sam Allardyce for £6M in the summer of 20007, and 32 year-old Peter played 84 times with 29 goals, since he was signed as a free agent bu Joe Kinnear,  from Schalke 04 in January of 2009.

We thank both players for their time at Newcastle, and both were first class professionals on Tyneside, and we especially thank them for their sterling work in our promotion season – it’s very much appreciated.

Comments welcome.

i for one would Applaud Peter lovenkrands, Leon Best, Danny Guthrie and Even smithy if we get to see them again, Best of luck to all of them! sad to see them go but equally excited for the new replacements!

Always been a big fan of the Lover man, thought he was excellent when we were in the Championship. Consummate professional.

Smudge was also a beast in the Championship season, just couldn’t make the step up for the Prem and I suppose it isn’t his fault he was given such a ludicrously cushy contract. Just serves to show that the club is now run in a totally different way.

Would like to thank both of them though for their hard work and commitment for the club. Would be warmly welcomed back

  • 4 markmac // Jul 10, 2012 at 2:27 PM

good luck to both of them, we just need to find there replaements now

  • 5 nufc786 // Jul 10, 2012 at 2:27 PM

best of luck to all of them…. i will not forget how they picked us up during the championship and helped us up to the prem… wish them well for the future……

Repost as applicable to this blog:-
Joking aside, it is slightly worrying that we are moving out fringe players such as Lovenkrands & Guthrie and not replacing them let alone strengthening the squad.
It could well be we are gathering in funds before spending and using brinkmanship for our targets but still slightly worrying

  • 7 toonincheek // Jul 10, 2012 at 2:38 PM

Sort of off-topic, but just wanted to say -

    Ed – you are a **** man.

  • 8 Toonboy_84 // Jul 10, 2012 at 2:39 PM

Good luck to these lads. Just not quite up 2 where we are trying to get. Good lads though.

  • 9 Gateshead-Mag // Jul 10, 2012 at 2:40 PM

    martoon

the way i see it the players were moving out we already have replacements for, sammy ameobi, abeid, vukic gosling, amilfitano, bigirimama all just as good if not better (bar guthrie) as the players that are being shipped out, i think were deffo making space from the wage bill and that tho, expect to see atleast 2 or 3 new faces imo

  • 10 blogkiller // Jul 10, 2012 at 2:42 PM

    martoon
i understand what u are saying but u have seen how our targets have been really difficult to buy as dejong and douglas show tht… i mean before lovenkrands and guthrie left we were making moves for both de jong and douglas … we have a plan but we are finding it difficult to meet asking prices and such…

  • 11 toonincheek // Jul 10, 2012 at 2:42 PM

martoon – I think Guthrie is the only solid standin for the 1st team that we haven’t replaced.
    The others – scarcely fringe.
We have quite a few coming back, Sammy, Marveaux, we aren’t really much down on 1st-teamers or regular bench players.

But we DO need more players with the extra games.
I’m hoping for a couple of players plus a few of the younger fringe players (Sammy, Fergie, Vukic) to come through.

Agree that Tav needs more experience before he can get a regular place on the bench.

  • 12 Gateshead-Mag // Jul 10, 2012 at 2:43 PM

have no fear people, pardew and that arent stupid, they obviously kno what they need to bring in and what youngsters can make the step up this year, forgot ferguson aswell off my list

  • 13 Nick 69 // Jul 10, 2012 at 2:44 PM

Gateshead-Mag – totally agree, I don’t think we need to replace the older fringe players, personally they just get in the way of our youngster progressing and I think the youngsters we have in and around the squad are more than ready to step up and replace Guthrie, Loven, Smith etc. The only players we need to bring in are players to improve our first team and a few development players

  • 14 Peter // Jul 10, 2012 at 2:47 PM

cant wait to see how we do in europe and hopefully see lots of players breakthrough this season with the fergusons vuckic sammeobi and new young signings i believe we only really need a new cb rb and a non african st and we could potentially do even better than last season who knows maybe a cup :P

  • 15 Gateshead-Mag // Jul 10, 2012 at 2:48 PM

spot on, id far rather see abeid brought on or vukic than even guthrie during a game, if we want our youngsters to become top players they need to be given the chance,

wev seen glimses of ferguson, sammy and co and what iv seen of them exites me far more than lovenkrands or guthrie could hope to do these days,

not nokin guthrie loverman smith any of them because theyve played their hearts out for our club, just think there time has gone

    onwards and upwards

    Amen

  • 16 MUTINYbyLEMONS // Jul 10, 2012 at 2:48 PM

Good luck to all them players, served us well and wish them well. So looking forward to next season. Why can’t we play all year round?. One player I am most looking forward to watch is Vuckic. Really hopes he gets more game time and more importantly stay injury free. He looked very good in pre-season last year and in a few games he played.

I am not panicking, but may i say, compared to last season we have a weaker squad (after releases and sales) and we have a tougher league with southampton reading and WHU (none will go down IMHO) and more matches with Europa

So, need to put the put down

  • 24 Mark29Hungary // Jul 10, 2012 at 3:15 PM

    Good luck lads!

Smudge was a real leader in Leeds but it was long time ago and now he’s too slow and circumstantial. He’s not enough to the PL, but he’s better than play for MK Dons.

I don’t know, I hoped Leeds sing him, and he can end his career his first club.

Löven was one of my favorite players, but I think he and Shola are the same category. Ba and Cisse are our top strikers. Beheind them were Shola, Löven and Best.

We need a young striker talent like Guidetti.

  • 25 jesperfuglsang // Jul 10, 2012 at 3:22 PM

    Indian

if Abeid, Vuckic, Fergy, Amalfitano, Biggi, Tav and young Sameobi have any kind of impact this season I won’t say we are worse of so far this season.

I do agree with the majority that key areas need to be strengthen :) but I as sure Pardew knows that.

I would suggest both DL and LC to work at the speed of light as Carr cause they are a bit slow at tightening up our transfer targets ;)

…for heaven sake Carr has identified them along time ago. Maybe it’s all that vacationing they are doing when it’s transfer season ;) lol

I’ve read quite a few posts about our squad being weaker than last year. We’ve sold best and let loverkrands, guthrie and smith go. We’ve got abied, vukic, sammi, ferguson, bigimarna, amalfitano all coming through to show what they’ve got. I fink all the above will play a big part this season. Pardew has made a decision to utilise these players. If we signed equivalent players as to who left as in squad players these youth players wouLd never get a game and would move on due to lack of potential playin time. Plus we got marvuex back and hopefully fit. He can be a very dangerous player. For me we need a sub left back and a young striker. That’s it for me. Bring debuchy in and ship simmo out and have tav as replacement.

  • 43 toon smart // Jul 10, 2012 at 4:26 PM

In a moment of boredom i have jsut found out something interesting. The management company that looks after Ben Arfa is the same one as Debuchy. But then if you look at the rest of the players they look after there seems to be an interesting theme. Quite few players we have been linked with happen to come from this same agency. Examples include Sofiane Feghouli, Raphael Varne, Victor Moses, Gary Hooper, Zakaria Labyad, Geoffrey Kondogbia etc. I wonder if this is how journalists come up with their rumours or if Newcastle seem to be scouting players who belong to the same management company?

  • 54 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 10, 2012 at 4:58 PM

Here’s my new set of targets as from today:

    Debuchy/Cissokho – £6m
    Aldereweild/Sakho – £7m
    Hoilett – Free
    Albin Ebondo – Free
    Guidetti – Loan
Carroll – Loan (Liverpool won’t want to get rid of him to a rival club though)

    Total = £13m

Steven Fletcher is too expensive (£15m is ridiculous. Can’t believe Sunderland want to pay £10m for him).

  • 72 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 10, 2012 at 5:39 PM

Realistically, I think that Agger would be an ideal signing, however, he’s worth around £16m.

    Ketsbaia

Well it’s a more realistic list than it used to be but me for one would never let Judas Carroll back on Tyneside leave alone play for us again. Albin Ebondo is not good enough & also we don’t do loan deals but permanent move for Guidetti would be good.

If i had to choose from your list who to sign i’d say Debuchy, Sakho, Hoilett & Guidetti also a CDM like Anita who can play as a FB as well.

  • 77 Zebras4Life // Jul 10, 2012 at 5:46 PM

I am in on 5 players that are reasonably priced w position flexibilty – Since it appears as if MA isnt going to splash the cash I am going to pretend with the players we have been linked to.

    Guidetti – ST/CF (£6M)
    Toivenon – CAM/ST (£6M)
Anita – LB/RB/CDM (£6M) meet in the middle?
    Douglas – CB (£5M)
    Debuchy – RB/RWB/RM (£7M)

These transfers would tally £30M, but if we move Simpson for £4M, add the £5M from Forster/Best, plus the £20M figure the board said would be invested into our 1st team…I say it balances out nicely. This gives us alot of position flexibilty with solid youngsters.

    Thoughts?

  • 85 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 10, 2012 at 5:54 PM

Yeah, I forgot about Anita. I want us to sign a player in the stature of Marvin Martin. We need 2 centre backs (maybe Aldereweild and Scharner?). We also need 1 top class striker and a prospective striker, but I am unsure who we will sign.

Ebondo’s gone a bit like Bernard Mendy, but he’s free and would be a good squad player.

  • 86 geordie157 // Jul 10, 2012 at 5:55 PM

Well you can tell there’s a lack of transfer gossip today.

Seeing the Palace owner say they would want 3mill compo for Clyne made me think, give them the 3mill. Scrap the Debuchy saga and move on to other targets. We get a young future England player that can also play left back for half the price.

  • 87 BigB75 // Jul 10, 2012 at 5:56 PM

that kid Bradley together with Mr.T would be a force to deal with in the midfield!!

  • 88 SupaToonKid // Jul 10, 2012 at 5:56 PM

Exactly TDS nobody from the club has ever said we have a £20M budget, just some rubbish made up by the Chronicle. I doubt we would’ve bid half of our budget on one player when we need at least 4 more (possibley 5) to compete and progress for next season.

  • 101 ToonDownSouth // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:11 PM

We do not need any more CMs. Our interest in Anita would surely have ended when we signed Bigiriman.

We look at Anita. Ajax ask for £6m. We go and sign a young hot prospect for £1m instead. The end.

Common sense appears to have gone out the window.

  • 107 ToonDownSouth // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:19 PM

    tads

How are Amalfitano, Bigrimana, Vuckic, Abeid, Gosling, etc ever going to get experience if we keep bringing in players in front of them?

We have far more concerning issues at CB and LB (or RB, depending where Santon plays).

The club aren’t going to keep spending money on CM’s when we have 3 CB’s and 1 LB at the club!

  • 108 geordie157 // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:19 PM

@TDS agreed its not a priority, as Gosling, Perch, Abeid, Bigirimana and Vukcic will all feature, but one more quality CM benefits us as it could allow Cabaye to feature in a more advanced role, and if its a N’Zonzi or Mulumbu type it helps our defence out.

But on the flipside if we ended up just signing Clyne and Hoilett i’d settle for that!

  • 109 BigB75 // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:20 PM

*is a… meant to be are

  • 110 ToonDownSouth // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:23 PM

    geordie157

At the start of the transfer window – given how we know the club are in the transfer market – I’d have been satisfied with a CB & a RB/LB.

We’ve let go of Guthrie, and bought in two young CM’s, so that’s fine in my opinion.

I’d add a forward to the list though, as I didn’t think we’d actually let go of Best. It shows ambition by the club though – it would be easy to keep Best because he can ‘do a job’, but if we improve on him it’ll be a good statement of ambition.

  • 111 blogkiller // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:25 PM

i think we are going to wait and see what gosling is like at cm if he is as good as guthrie we wont buy a new cm if he isnt then we will buy a new cm and gosling will either get loaned out maybe sold or will feature less in the team…. why i didnt include perchino well perchino is a backup to dm/cb/rb/lb

  • 112 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:25 PM

I agree we need some denfensive cover aswell but pards has said Amalfitano will take time to adapt bigirimana is a defensive mid (who was a CB) abied is apparantly going on loan vuckic is possibly more injury prone than taylor and the only thing halting his progress is his fitness hence why hes barely had any loan spells and would be very risky to rely on him abied looks a cracking player but is nowhere near to a creative spark to link midfield with our strikers as for gosling the lad needs to put some serious work in

  • 113 SupaToonKid // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:26 PM

N’Zonzi would be a good buy at the right price but i bet Rovers will inflate his price. N’Zonzi has always had moments of brilliance but then looked really bad in other games but i’m sure somebody like Pards could help him get the consistancy he needs. Would prefer Anita though due to his versatility.

  • 114 jesperfuglsang // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:27 PM

    definitely spurs :-)

  • 115 geordie157 // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:28 PM

For a moment there i forgot about the centre back issue, RB/CB/ST are the 3 big additions we need.

So i’ll add Sakho to my wishlist of Clyne and Hoilett. But obviously would be happy with Debuchy.

  • 116 blogkiller // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:28 PM

thinking realistically we have amifiltano, vuckic and abeid in our midfield ranks…… and perchino as i already mentioned gosling….

  • 117 ToonDownSouth // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:29 PM

    tads

Obviously, I’d like it if we had a multitude of options for every position on the pitch! But we’ve got to be realistic and consider how hte club conducts transfer business these days.

I’d be very very very surprised if we bought another CM in – unless he’s another teenager.

I’d be even more surprised if Carroll came back haha.

  • 118 blogkiller // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:30 PM

and the new addition of bigirimana

  • 119 Sazzer // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:32 PM

I don’t think signing Bigi mean that we don’t go after Anita. Rather that we have promising back up if Anita gets injured or gets sold within 2 or 3 years. Buy Anita at 6-8 m £ sell him within 3 years for double that amount and Bigi takes over the build up play role.

  • 120 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:34 PM

Haven’t been that impressed with Clyne, I’d rather have Debuchy or Cissokho. Debuchy can also play in midfield so he’d be a great signing.

Scharner can replace Williamson and be our 3rd/4th choice centre back. He can do a decent job for 3 years. He scores goals. I rate him as a player. Can’t understand why you’re all hard on him.

Gael was signed to be a part of the development squad. We was given £15m to sort that out this summer, so expect another 8/9 young players coming in.

If we sign a centre back and a left back, we will then be able to compete with teams. We still need about 4/5 extra first team additions to have the ultimate squad.

  • 121 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:36 PM

Tds really never want to see carroll play in a toon shirt again

Hopefully Amalfitano will settle quickly but to be honest im really not sold on gosling hope im wrong but he is the most senior of are squad midfielders and seems to be developing the least

  • 122 blogkiller // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:37 PM

first of all i would take clyne because of his potential
tht being said the rb tht starts in our team should be hopefully debuchy or santon because they are futher ahead of clyne…. but clyne has promise to be a very good rightback…..

  • 123 FatmanJoe // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:37 PM

Marveaux obertan Ben arfa and guti can all play cm and be that ‘creative spark’ for the strikers to look to score from. Not working about midfield at all… My only issue is that I think our lads in the middle need to step up with their goals. Ben arfa and cabs need to reach double figures next season to help out the strikers and Jonas and obertan need to weigh in also.

No the money needs to be spent on a decent lb that can cover cb and a winger who can double as a striker.

  • 124 geordie157 // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:37 PM

I like the idea of Cabaye alongside Tiote with Marv in front of them. But if he has a good pre season we could see Gosling feature as he can be a great box to box player, would love to see him prove his doubters wrong this season as Perch did last season.

The worry with our midfielders in particular is that they all spend a lot of time on the treatment table, Gosling, Obertan, Marveaux, Vuckic, Fergs, even down to reserve level its a problem, ie Newton, Inman and Moyo.

  • 125 Marty-Toon // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:38 PM

  • 131 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:45 PM

Xisco needs to be utilised. We can’t afford to sell him at the moment as we are short on strikers. I’d also give Ranger another chance.

  • 132 geordie157 // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:45 PM

Can someone explain why Cissokho would be a good signing, he went to Lyon for a big fee, hasn’t lived up to the hype, is prone to getting caught out positionally and probably commands a fairly big wage. I understand the potential is there, but i’d worry that he’d struggle in the Prem. If he hasn’t gone anywhere yet that Boenisch on a free would be less of risk and he can play lb/rb.

  • 133 MagpiesFlyHigh // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:46 PM

Just read an article on Nufcblog.co.uk (now now don’t be calling me a traitor, i only post on here but read many different nufc related blogs) and it was about whether we would like Andy Carroll back on loan? I was surprised to find that more than 50% voted “YES” because there is no way I would want him back. Our playing style is gradually evolving and changing from the style we played when we had Andy and getting him back will just put us back in square one if he plays regularly. Also why would we want to improve a player of our rival especially if there was no option for permanent deal at the end of the loan.

  • 138 geordie157 // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:49 PM

Ketsbaia, as it currently stands i agree, but i think we can afford to offload one of them. Shola is effectively 3rd choice, plus Sammy is probably ahead of them both.

Will be interesting to see if Campbell or Hooper break into the first team as well.

In an ideal world both pieters and debuchy as pieters can also play cb but can’t see it happening. I like the idea of clyne as well but how demoralising would that be to tav who probably sees himself now as 2nd choice rb?

Shola had a Great season as sub and I don’t think any of our youngsters should go on loan if we’re serious about cup competitions.

Can’t see how making our squad any smaller benefits anyone.

  • 145 geordie157 // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:55 PM

Until players come in, we can’t really afford to loan or sell anyone else, possibly withn the exception of offloading Xisco or Ranger

And that includes Wilo, he needs to stay until at least Jan.

  • 146 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 10, 2012 at 6:56 PM

if we get a new cb then perhaps we could sell willo but i for one is not a slater of willo… he is our player he done his best from portsmouths reserves to nufc….. he had a mint patnership with collo during the 10/11 season…. ..

he is not one of those players we had tht was just in it for the money like michael owen… if we need an upgrade for cb then so be it its for the best of the team but just because of tht we do not need to slate willo…….

if we finished mid table last season then i doubt we would be slating willo just becuz of this top buisness we are slating the likes of willo and simmo…

    Kets mate,

as of now we have 21 first team player above 21; if you want to sell three of them, then we are down to 18. If you want to loan out further two, then we are down to 16.

That is going to a very thin first team, and a whole lot of playing time for the young guns ;)

I think Gosling is going to be our Guthrie this season and Pardew has express that he think this is going to be Obertan’s season so they will be staying.

Now anyone who knows me, knows how I feel about Ameobi; I don’t rate him that much as a footballer, but thinks the world of him as a person. Surely you cannot be seriously about selling and put your faith in Ranger and Xisco?

Both Ranger and Xisco are out the door, if it is possible to sell them and rightly so.

I like your enthusiasm, but just think you’re going a bit overboard mate ;)

By suggesting of selling Ameobi, I think you are playing too much FIFA and don’t know what morale means to us.

And for whoever saying we need a new LB, please stay put. Haven’t we talked about this a long long time ago that we accept Santon as the right-footed LB? If you don’t accept this fact, that’s fine. But if you say we are getting a world-class LB NOW, sure why not? It’s just that… I don’t think this kind of debate worths. • 209 Beardo // Jul 10, 2012 at 8:11 PM

    Pizzicatochan

Nope. There’s compensation to be paid to Blackburn, as he’s a product of their youth system and his age deems we must pay them compensation, which is generally thought to be around 3m.

    Cissokho – Too much?

    with other targets in mind.

  • 221 Beattie25 // Jul 10, 2012 at 8:26 PM

    Guys I have a theory.

I locked myself in a darkened room with nothing but Mozart playing gently in the background (piano concerto in d minor), and as I sipped my cognac I pondered the multitude of possible reasons why we have not signed any players and I have found the holy grail, the chalice of the divines the key to the chamber of reason.

    Behold my conclusion.

    Merchandise.

We as toon fans sell more replica shirts per capita than any other football club. Last season we revealed our shirts in May. The advertising featured a certain Kevin Nolan, our captain, and in truth that campaign wasted a fortune as toon fans waited to see who we signed and then bought shirts without players names and eventually forgot that that home shirt was the new one for the 2011-2012 season.

Learning from that we are not revealing it until August. This means that we will announce our signings just before the shirts goes on sale. Imagine, Debuchy signs, the shirt goes on sale, we all flock to the store, buy the shirt with a name and nufc make a fortune.

It’s only logical. We should’ve announced the new look shirt ages ago but yet it is as of yet non existent! Why is that? Revenue for when we sign our big named players.

I shall now return to my bleak study as you digest this magical notion.

  • 222 blogkiller // Jul 10, 2012 at 8:29 PM

beattie tht is pure logic u sherlock holmes you!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 223 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 10, 2012 at 9:07 PM

Xisco has done well at reserve level and has played well for us in his brief spell. He definitely has the ability. Remember him banging in 3 against Man U reserves. Think Macheda got a hat-trick that night as well.

Xisco is better than Ameobi and Best. He’s 25/26 now so he still has a bit of time to excel. We won’t need him if we sign 2 strikers though.
