There’s certainly a lot of transfer news today regarding Newcastle United with the Magpies said to be close to singing Mathieu Debuchy from Lille and selling Danny Simpson to Reading, and now there’s breaking news coming out of Holland, that they are getting close to a deal for Brazilian center-back Douglas of FC Twente.
Douglas – on his way to Newcastle?
The news is being reported in Holland, and Newcastle are said to be hopeful in pushing through a deal next week for the 6’4″ defender.
The Brazilian has been a target of Newcastle for quite some time now, and Alan Pardew has been keen to recruit the towering defender to Tyneside, as he sees strengthening the defense as key this summer.
The negotiations with Douglas have been complicated for Newcastle for at least two reasons – the first is that the Brazilian has many people saying they officially represent him in the transfer market, and the second is that he needs to stay resident in Holland until near the end of August – to fulfill FIFA regulations so he can play for the full Dutch National side.
The Shields Gazette is reporting that Newcastle are more than willing to work around the fact that Douglas cannot arrive at Newcastle until late August, in order to push through the deal, said to be for around £5M.
It certainly would be great to get both Douglas and Mathieu Debuchy of Lille signed up over the next week, and it does appear that Newcastle have gone into overdrive over the last couple of days with their drive to bring new players to Tyneside.
