Dutch Reports Claim Newcastle Close On Douglas Deal

There’s certainly a lot of transfer news today regarding Newcastle United with the Magpies said to be close to singing Mathieu Debuchy from Lille and selling Danny Simpson to Reading, and now there’s breaking news coming out of Holland, that they are getting close to a deal for Brazilian center-back Douglas of  FC Twente.

Douglas – on his way to Newcastle?

The news is being reported in Holland, and Newcastle are said to be hopeful in pushing through a deal next week for the 6’4″ defender.

The Brazilian has been a target of Newcastle for quite some time now, and Alan Pardew has been keen to recruit the towering defender to Tyneside, as he sees strengthening the defense as key this summer.

The negotiations with Douglas have been complicated for Newcastle for at least two reasons – the first is that the Brazilian has many people saying they officially represent him in the transfer market, and the second is that he needs to stay resident in Holland until near the end of August – to fulfill FIFA regulations so he can play for the full Dutch National side.

The Shields Gazette is reporting that Newcastle are more than willing to work around the fact that Douglas cannot arrive at Newcastle until late August, in order to push through the deal, said to be for around £5M.

It certainly would be great to get both Douglas and Mathieu Debuchy of Lille signed up over the next week, and it does appear that Newcastle have gone into overdrive over the last couple of days with their drive to bring new players to Tyneside.

Would you rather have Douglas or Sakho?

Bit cautious over this one. True we have enough cover to accomodate for August; but his temperament has been put into question with the red cards he’s collected.

Sakho for sure!!! Douglas is probably my third choice, behind Sakho and Alderweireld, but the latter said he’s staying put.

Rather Sakho tbh but thats unlikely to happen. Douglas to me docent seem to be a particularly loyal player. We’d probs get 1 decent season out of him before he’d throw a fit and want to move on!

Wow Ed…you pouring the articles today. I can barely keep up. At least we may have some cause for joy.
Hope Debuchy gets finalized soon. After that a CB a CDM and a striker is what i’d like. On the douglas vs sakho front i belive douglas would come cheaper and cost less in wages so it’s not an easy call to make. I think i’d rather have Sakho but it all depends on how we plan to split our budget between signings i guess.

No doubt Sakho would be a great acquisition for any team. I hope that any interest we had in him is materialised into a bid. Let’s just hope.

    Sakho

Also I don’t get this whole 5 years thing?

Could he not just come to England on a prolonged ‘holiday’?

Surely holidays don’t count as long as legally you abide in Holland.

Agreed on the Douglas citizenship thing. Why can’t he play here but still go “home” every so often till end of august?

Surely more exciting news lies in wait with Hoilett.

QPR were favourites, Pardew was waiting for a response and Gladbach had pulled the plug. Now apperently he is on his way to Germany where 2 teams are currently in training. Gladbach and nufc.

@benarfa – ’cause he’s not good enough to get into Brazils team.
I’d much rather Sakho, about the same ability level currently but Sakho is 3 years younger.

    Ed,
thanks for keeping busy with posts, am away to Finland and it’s nice to catch up. So:
Yes, we need a CB given the fact that Saylor is NOT a player we can depend on….
So long as we don’t sell any of our stars we’ll do alright but I do agree with Shearer, we need to spend to improve, it goes with the territory. We did have some lucky results last year and others which were down to individual brilliance, not super tactics, I’m sure AP can see that. Bargains can be good, but there are reasons they are bargains. 9 out of 10 times you pay for what you get. ps. Don’t shop in Finland, too expensive!

As per usual, not batting an eyelid at any of the Debuchy crap until it’s on .co.uk.

    WWYCD

It is a lot, but if we consider it as a straight upgrade on Simpson then you’re talking £5m, £4m maybe? That doesn’t seem so bad…

@11 because hes a non EU citizen, his work permit is dependant on his employment, to become a Dutch national he needs to have been sponsered by a Dutch business, in this case twente, for 5 years, not just as simple as living there!

Is Andy Carroll set for a return to Newcastle? With Brendan Rodgers seemingly keen to off-load the £35m striker we’ve seen his price cut from 4/1 to rejoin the Toon overnight to even money. See the latest betting.

Whilst Sakho would’ve been MY first choice…Carr and co would’ve watched this lad douglas for many years no doubt so have a better grasp on his skill, technique and temperament than anybody else. If he says he is good enough…I’m happy to go with that! I dunno about you but I hadn’t heard of debuchy 12mths ago…whereas GC was keeping a very close eye! In Carr we trust…! (That should be made into a t shirt!!!)

Douglas couldn’t claim he was on ‘holiday’ because he would be working and playing for NUFC and paying tax etc.

Gotta say aswell, Douglas is a fantastic defender! He was very good when twente were in the champions league, rarely makes mistakes, his only problem is hes a bit hot headed, very strong in the challenge but to be fair a few of his red cards have come from tackles that wouldn’t have even been fouls in the premier league! Also, hes widely regarded as the best centre half in eiriedivisie, which is a football playing league, he’s good with the ball at his feet and also strong in playing the ball out of defends! As far as loyalty goes, he turned down moves to Liverpool and Italian clubs in the past years to stay at twente, his move comes from wanting to play at a higher level as he’s developed all he can at twente!

Been reading what Lee Ryder has been tweeting. He is at our training camp in Germany and is highly impressed with Gael! Heck of a strike on him apparently and set for debut tonight. Also simmo is training and not having talks with reading, Cissé is flying, marv and tayls on fitness…and ranger sat at home!
