We have to hope Sky Sports is correct with their breaking news that Newcastle United are very close to sealing a deal for their French International target – Mathieu Debuchy.
Mathieu Debuchy – close to Newcastle move?
Sky Sports sources are reporting that Newcastle seem close to completing the deal with French club Lille, for a player who has been their target all last season.
Sifting through the various reports on Debuchy, it appears that Newcastle have already bid £4M for the Frenchman, which was immediately turned down, but a fee of around £6M was thought to be what Lille would accept for their player.
With Mathieu’s excellent performances in Euro 2012, there are other big clubs after the player, so if Newcastle can seal the deal, it would a terrific signing for the club.
The breaking news is that Newcastle have re-opened talks in the last two days with Lille and are now close to reaching an agreement on a deal said to be worth around £7M.
Newcastle are hoping to push through the deal in the coming days, as they want Debuchy signed, sealed and delivered, so he can join the Magpies pre-season tour of Germany.
And of course this fits in nicely with the earlier news today, that Newcastle may have sold right-back Danny Simpson to Reading, for an undisclosed fee, thought to be at least £2M.
Danny would not want to stay at Newcastle if he wasn’t playing in the first team, after having three seasons as Newcastle’s first choice right back, and we think the Simpson deal going through with Reading will be dependent on the Debuchy deal going through with Lille.
This makes a lot of sense – we just hope it’s all true.
And if it is true, then it seems the friendship with Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye, who played with Mathieu at Lille for six years, has indeed swayed the deal in Newcastle’s favor.
Sounds good to us.
