Newcastle showed off their new strip tonight when they went down 1-0 to Chemnizer in Germany, in the first of their six pre-season friendlies.
But it’s not that Newcastle didn’t have their chances to win the game, but it was goalkeeper Philipp Pentke who continually frustrated the Magpies making great saves from Haris Vuckic, Dan Gosling and Shola Ameobi late in the game.
Rob Elliot started the game for Newcastle in goal and was trying to prove to manager Alan Pardew that he can challenge Tim Krul for the number one goalkeeper jersey this season, and he made an excellent save from a Toni Wachsmuth header.

After 36 minutes it looked like Newcastle had pulled one back through Sammy Ameobi, when he put the ball in the back of the net, but he was adjudged to have been offside.
James Tavernier from the right then put in a good cross and Dan Gosling hit the ball first time at the far post, but goalkeeper Pentke made a superb save by somehow putting the ball over the cross-bar for a corner.
Pentke than made another excellent stop, this time from Slovenian midfielder Haris Vuckic but at the half the score was still 1-0.
Alan Pardew sent out the same team after the break but the magpies then started to commit errors as first Dan Gosling lost the ball and Carsten Straßer fired over from a decent position, and then Mike Williamson played a woeful back pass that was finally cleared by young James Tavernier.
But try as they did Newcastle could not beat the Man of the Match – Chemnitzer goalkeeper Phillip Pentke – even after manager Alan Pardew gave some playing time to his senior stars like Danny Simpson, Shola Ameobi, Demba Ba and Jonas Gutierrez.
And new boy Gael Bigiriman made his first appearances in a black and white shirt after 66 minutes.
Next up for Newcastle is a game on Monday night against French second division side AS Monaco, in Landsberg am Lech, Germany, with a 7:00 pm kick off time.
