Young Newcastle Side Go Down 1-0 In Chemnitz, Germany

Newcastle showed off their new strip tonight when they went down 1-0 to Chemnizer in Germany, in the first of their six pre-season friendlies.

The German third division side scored with a goal early in the game, after only 9 minutes from Anton Fink, and that turned out to be the winning goal in front of a crowd of 6,700.

But it’s not that Newcastle didn’t have their chances to win the game, but it was goalkeeper Philipp Pentke who continually frustrated the Magpies making great saves from Haris Vuckic, Dan Gosling and Shola Ameobi late in the game.

Rob Elliot started the game for Newcastle in goal and was trying to prove to manager Alan Pardew that he can challenge Tim Krul for the number one goalkeeper jersey this season, and he made an excellent save from a Toni Wachsmuth header.

The Newcastle starting eleven show off the new strips tonight in Germany

After 36 minutes it looked like Newcastle had pulled one back through Sammy Ameobi, when he put the ball in the back of the net, but he was adjudged to have been offside.

James Tavernier from the right then put in a good cross and Dan Gosling hit the ball first time at the far post, but goalkeeper Pentke made a superb save by somehow putting the ball over the cross-bar for a corner.

Pentke than made another excellent stop, this time from Slovenian midfielder Haris Vuckic but at the half the score was still 1-0.

Alan Pardew sent out the same team after the break but the magpies then started to commit errors as first Dan Gosling lost the ball and Carsten Straßer fired over from a decent position, and then Mike Williamson played a woeful back pass that was finally cleared by young James Tavernier.

But try as they did Newcastle could not beat the Man of the Match – Chemnitzer goalkeeper Phillip Pentke –  even after manager Alan Pardew gave some playing time to his senior stars like Danny Simpson, Shola Ameobi, Demba Ba and Jonas  Gutierrez.

And new boy Gael Bigiriman made his first appearances in a black and white shirt after 66 minutes.

Next up for Newcastle is a game on Monday night against French second division side AS Monaco, in Landsberg am Lech, Germany, with a 7:00 pm kick off time.

Teams:

Chemnitzer (4-4-2): Phillip Pentke; Fabian Stenzel, Toni Wachsmuth, Marcel Wilke, Thomas Birk; Sascha Pfeffer, Carsten Straßer (c), Maik Kegel (Florian Hornig 75), Josip Landeka (Anton Makarenko 78); Anton Fink (Tino Semmer 80), Benjamin Forster (David Jansen 70)

Pardiola living up to his Spanish name and playing without a recognised striker…

I’m not too bothered about the result. Didn’t we lose to Orlando City last pre-season?

Still think as I always have we NEED a new back up goalkeeper as I mean it is just my opinion but really don’t rate Rob Elliot (no offense to him) but he has hardly played for us and when he has…not looked that promising! Anyone else agree with me or got any suggestions for who we should get? Think we need a goalkeeper who is fairly young with potential and can speak English as keepers do have to be vocal…?

Yup I prefer last years home kit. It was classier. Oh well I bet this was just so that the Virgin Sponsor would look better and for money through merchandise. After all the more they sell the more chance we have of getting a new gem in the team.

I believe the next pre-season game is also live on ESPN as well.

Can’t wait to see the lads playing again. Hopefully they will play a littler better than today. 😀

Jak Alnwick has played for England at youth levels – we pinched him from the mackem academy – so he’s probably got some potential there.

You can never really count on goalkeepers living up to it though. He’d have to spend 4 or 5 years out on loan etc.

Ibiza I still rate Harper but heard he might be going out on loan and could be retiring soon? Even though he sounds to have done OK tonight, I don’t think he has had much experience in premiership so would be hesitant to leave him as back up if Krul gets injured.

atleast it wasn’t as bad as Leyton Orient 😉

Pre-Season fixtures are just to get players used to playing footy again and it’s not really about who wins but just to help fitness & squad togetherness but sides tend to do well in the League when they have bad pre-seasons strangely.

Sorry about that guys…had to make some calls. Seems laser tag is fully booked tonight…gutted to say the least.

Yo…You’re tendency to be violent comes as no shock to me 🙂

ToonUnited…I really see no point in loaning him out if he’s due to retire soon. I’d rather loan out Elliot as I think he needs the games. Not a bad keeper, but seems far from great. Krul injured? shhhhh…don’t say such things.

    Gateshead….understandable 🙂
