Let’s hope this news in the Daily Mail today is true, and that a £7M fee offered by Newcastle, has now been accepted by his French club Lille.
Mathieu Debuchy – in action against England last month
If that’s the case, then it should be a fairly easy job to agree terms with the French international, with his wages at Newcastle maybe as much as three times what he is getting at the former French Champions.
And if this deal goes through, we’ll have Yohan Cabaye to thank, since he’s been persuading his pal to come to Tyneside all this year, and it looks like he will now succeed.
There’s little doubt that Debuchy will be a terrific signing for Newcastle, and he should strengthen the Newcastle back four this season, and Danny Simpson will be able to leave to join Reading, and Newcastle will recoup at least £2M for the former Manchester United player.
That will help soften the fact that Mathieu didn’t come as cheap as Newcastle had hoped. The Magpies had a previous bid of £4M rejected out of hand by Lille.
And the other highly interested club, Inter-Milan also had a bid rejected, but it looks like Newcastle have stolen a march on the Italian club, by agreeing a fee with Lille for the player.
Newcastle had hoped to get Mathieu for a fee less than £7M, maybe the £4M it took to get Cabaye to Newcastle last summer.
But with other clubs interested in him, and knowing how savvy Newcastle have been in the transfer market over the last couple of years, and that coupled with Debuchy’s excellent form in the Euro201 tournament have raised his price.
But he should still turn out to be a great buy for Newcastle, and now we just have to wait and see if the club can get this lad through the door – as soon as possible.
