Bigirimana And Amalfitano Get Starts Tonight Against Monaco

5:17 pm, Monday, July 16th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 323 Comments

New boy Gael Bigirimana gets a start tonight against Monaco, as the 18 year-old midfielder gets a big chance to show what he can do in a Newcastle shirt against the French second division side.

The 18-year-old was signed from Coventry City for around £1M about a week or so ago, but he made his debut for Newcastle when he came on as a sub against Chemnitzer on Friday night in Chemnitz, Germany.

Mehdi Abeid will also be in the middle of the park and it looks like Gael will be given the attacking midfield role tonight.

Alan Pardew has made seven changes to the side that started on Friday night, with Steve Harper, Davide Santon, Danny Simpson and Jonas Gutierrez also starting – and Jonas will be playing left-back tonight.

Romain Amalfitano gets another start as do the two Ameobi brothers and Demba Ba.

Newcastle United (4-4-2): Steve Harper; Davide Santon, Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Jonas Gutierrez; Romain Amalfitano, Mehdi Abeid, Gael Bigirimana, Sammy Ameobi; Shola Ameobi, Demba Ba
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, James Tavernier, Ryan Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, James Perch, Dan Gosling, Cheick Tiote, Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan, Haris Vuckic

Comments welcome.

  • 2 Dannyo // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:19 PM

    @geordielad95
    I think it’s a 4-4-2 mate.

    Harper
    Santon-Simmo-Willo-Gutti
    Amalfatino-Biggie-Abeid-Sammy
    Shola-Ba

It’s on the cards…Collo being sold to Man City…Simmo to be his replacement!

Ashley out now, whilst we still have a chance!

  • 8 2_goal_tino // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:23 PM

Official website says Guti is playing as a defender today, so Simpson at CB. We don’t even have a reserve player to step up, like Kadar used to do in pre-season. The fact we can’t even produce a second CB in a pre-season game shows just how important it is we get a CB in both for the first team squad and development squad (Douglas and Good). A lot say Streete – he’s a good prospect, but he’s just a kid. Playing against adults of any standard at this stage and he’d get destroyed.

  • 9 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:25 PM

2 goal…Not disputing we need another CB, but our 2 best CB’s aren’t even mentioned, so the panic isn’t as bad as you make out.

  • 10 t00ntime // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:25 PM

@mattynufc ba seems to trip over the ball when he is free, dont get me wrong i think ba is great but with the ball at there feet i think carroll is quicker (off ball i think ba is quicker) but carroll has more control if u ask me, maybe if we sign carroll we can have our players race and see who is quickest lol

  • 11 keeleytoon // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:26 PM

What time is kick off in uk?

  • 12 rich_toonfan // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:26 PM

How was it his fault he left?

The whole deal was blamed on everyone. Some blamed Carroll for going, other’s blamed Ashley for selling. In reality we will never know exactly how it was initiated and concluded.

All we know for sure is we got £35 million and used that money to improve the squad.

I just want people to imagine this, should be easy as we are all toon fans.

You grow up supporting Newcastle, your local club. You get your first game as their striker, a lot of hope on you to get goals but the club ends up relegated. You then have a storming breakthrough season and help fire your club into the premier league.

You start scoring against top level sides, helping to get your beloved, local club back to where they belong. You are wearing the famous number 9 shirt, scoring for fun, the crowd love you, you’re becoming a hero.

Then somebody gives you a ring and says have a chat with liverpool, they offered 35million and we would rather have that money that you.

At 21 year old you would feel awful….you would be so disillusioned with life, you had everything you ever wanted then you are tossed aside by people who own the club, not the fans.

Then you get all the abuse of being a traitor when for all we know he might not have wanted to go, he was maybe doing it to do the best for his club. They might have told him it was better for them if he packed his bags and left.

Its hypothetical but far from impossible.

I’m hoping Monaco play in their home kit tonight, might give us a chance to see our new away kit!

  • 14 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:27 PM

Rich…It’s as likely as he insisted on leaving for money. No one knows, so it shouldn’t be a factor in him returning imo.

Some will never move on though, oh well.

  • 15 Dannyo // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:28 PM

    @2_goal_tino
AP said Streete was physically ready, but probably not skillwise, only 17. But he’s currently injured tho.
Only 2nd pre-season game, still deals in the works imo.

For me saying we will just got to hoof ball with carroll is wrong. It is an option but not one we will have to, or i think we will take.

People spent all last season saying we played hoofball anyway, they complained about krul, simmo and willo going long so it’s not like we had a perfect short passing game going on.

I know some prefer the barcelona style but they can only play like that due to messi. He takes up the focus of so many players it creates space for the runners and passing of iniesta and xavi.

Even barcelona lost out in the league and champions league this year. Teams have found a way t play against then. Yes Barca are good enough to overcome it most times but if they are struggling they have no plan B.

imagine in the chelsea game if they had ibrahimovich still. Chelsea sat in their own box and crowded barca out, if they did that and they had a tall striker a cross into the box would cause a lot of problems.

the key for long term success is variation. You cannot go on for ever in one style.

Also Carroll is decent on the floor, Brendan Rogers is just trying to make a point for the fans that he wants attractive football by getting rid of him. He had danny graham playing decent stuff and carroll is ten times te player he is.

  • 27 Papiss_Myself // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:35 PM

Why is Cisse not even making the bench for these friendlys?????

  • 28 rich_toonfan // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:36 PM

    @ibiza

I know it is…I forgot to add that bit to the end.

Just saying can’t hold a grudge as we have no idea of the ins and outs of the deal.

Enrique made it clear, carroll never badmouthed the club though.

  • 29 2_goal_tino // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:36 PM

@ Manx – We wore it against Everton http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17973113

@ Ibiza / Dannyo – I know Colo and Saylor aren’t there, but Saylor won’t stay fit the whole season. So a situation like today and Norwich away is highly likely. In my opinion, Streete, while physically strong, can’t be deemed anywhere near ready. He has never been tested against players who are anywhere near as strong, intelligent or quick as he would experience anywhere down to League 1. People saying he could step up now would be the same people who’d rip him apart when he’d inevitably get found out.

  • 30 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:37 PM

matty….I can see from your posts your view is based on footballing reasons, which is fair enough and why I haven’t directed a response back at you. Seems a few on here have based their opinion soley on his record at Liverpool and the fact he left Newcastle, which really has no bearing on whether he is or isn’t good enough, but also understandable to a degree.

I suppose we’ll know soon enough whether it’s all a smokescreen or whether we’re actually interested. Either way, I’m fine with the outcome :)

  • 32 Magpie from Lithuania // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:37 PM

a bid of 13.5M for carroll is equal to 10.125M paying for him as liverpool must give 25% of the sale of carroll to us. so anyone who says we are paying more for carroll than de jong is VERY WRONG.

  • 33 Bloody Marveauxlous // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:40 PM

    Magpie from Lithuania,

    Well done, Good Math!

  • 34 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jul 16, 2012 at 5:43 PM

Rich…I was agreeing with you, sorry if it didn’t come across that way. I personally don’t believe he wanted out, otherwise he would of asked for a move when £25m was being offered (and was still a lot of money for him at the time). Either way, I haven’t a clue :)

2 Goal…As I said, not disputing the fact we need another CB, Collo is great, but we can’t expect him to play all PL and cup games. Saylor is a big question mark whether he can stay fit and whilst Willo try’s his best, he cannot be our number 2 for the whole season (well he can, but i’d rather he wasn’t :) ).

and yeh we are agreeing…..or are we? haha

I just think whoever we sign be it carroll, de jong, messi….whoever, will be judged for what they do on the pitch in the black and white.

If carroll turns up and him, cisse and ba work together and get a stack of goals they wont complain.

If we bought de jong for 12 million and he flopped he would be deemed a waste of money.

Its all relative to their performance.

Just to help you along with the bits you missed out of your hypothesis.

Said 21 yr old playing for his childhood hero’s AND wearing the no.9 shirt, just signed a new contract and was living the dream if the quote from him to the newspapers was true.

Hears that slitherpool were sniffing around and gets a wiff of the figures that were involved and walks straight back to the manager’s office demanding an instant massive hike in his pay, literally not more than 12 weeks after signing that so call great “living the dream” deal.

Club think greedy barsteward and let the bindippers have him for what was the steal of the century.

Its hypothetical but far from impossible.

And personally more believable than yours as it has more reported details in it.

Can’t help but think with that sized pitch Krul’s “hoofball” goal kicks might result in him getting on the score sheet

  • 69 rich_toonfan // Jul 16, 2012 at 6:08 PM

    @cupid

i said it could be either, never said my idea was the only one, just hypothetical.

The reports in the papers could be true or not….Ashley is hardly going to say we pushed him out the door, they will obviously blame him as they wanted the fans backlash on carroll not themselves….hard to say whats truth and whats not.

what I will say though is do you remember shearer? pretty sure he demanded and got a clause which made him always have to be the highest paid player at the club. If shearer was only on 30k a week bet he wouldn’t have stayed his whole career.

Its not an insult on the guy, just loyalty is one thing but its a 2 way thing, need to be rewarded for it.

And remember, even if carroll did say he wanted more money, he was on a 5/6 year deal so even if we rejected the 35million there is nothing he could do.

Try a few players in difference positions, see how they cope.

  • 106 voodoo85 // Jul 16, 2012 at 6:30 PM

    Harper

    Santon – Williamson – Simpson – Jonas

    Almafitano – Abeid – Bigi – Sammy

    Ba – Shola

    is this the team ?

seems strange to put Santon at RB when we are rumoured to be getting a new RB, why not just play Ryan Taylor there and keep Santon in usual LB position ??

Good old willo, so sharp on the turn, two big men up front, trying to sign Andy Carroll i do have my reservations sometimes about Pardiolas intentions on how he wants to play the game. i think its going to be another year of wondering whether he is going to go 442 or 433. This is the start of the debate. Groundhog season maybe.

  • 109 mattyNUFC // Jul 16, 2012 at 6:31 PM

    just stating my opinion

    amalfitano doesn’t look real sharp.

abeid and bigi both look like they’ll be some players….in a few years. great promise though from both of them

  • 110 geordielad95 // Jul 16, 2012 at 6:32 PM

Willo is really annoying me here. Why doesn’t he just pass it out from the back instead of hoofing it up the pitch and losing possession.

  • 111 Beardo Ameobi // Jul 16, 2012 at 6:32 PM

Would like to see us probe with a little control, hardly seen it in the middle of the park.

Makes so much difference having a CB who can bring the ball out and spot a pass – meaning Colo, although Saylor is quite good at it too.

  • 112 Crow59Cdo // Jul 16, 2012 at 6:33 PM

abeid is looking strong and really looks at home in the role he’s playing today, as for santon he just looks like hes not with it at all, all round nothing special but nothing to worry about either

  • 137 geordielad95 // Jul 16, 2012 at 6:38 PM

Seem to be against general opinion, but I see some promise in Amalafitano. Need a lot of work but he wasn’t supposed to fit in our first team. Trust me, a few months lessons off Ben Arfa in dribbling, cabaye in passing, obertan in speed and shola in mackem slaying, and we will have a decent player. Seriously though, he needs work but he’s not too bad

  • 138 Thump // Jul 16, 2012 at 6:38 PM

@Szarka: Given that he sees himself as a LB and has played their for the better part of his first team career, I’d say proving himself at RB is hardly a priority of his.

    rich_toonfan @ # 69

I don’t want to start up the reading between the lines thing again but I think the club has made things quite clear that contracts are flexible and they are quite prepared to re-assess terms on a regular basis related to form, I believe that there have been several contracts improved/renewed in season because the player is performing well enough to deserve it.

That being the case why was he knocking on the managers door demanding increases just three months into a new contract? End of season is when you should be asking for performance related changes.

I think he just got a whiff of the figures bounced around and thought that if the club value him at £20- 30 mil or more then he should be on £30mil players wages, totally overlooking the fact that the prices asked for were just to put slitherpool of the deal and the club is still trying to get on its feet.

As you can probably gather I feel that AC had more to do with his move to slitherpool than NUFC did.

Bigirmana looks quite good; he and Abeid both have great intensity. Santon not having his best game, but pulls something classy out every once in a while. Amalfitano seems nervous. Ba the best player on the pitch, not done much wrong. Centre-halves a bit worrying…

Santon – Been passed too many times, his jobs at RB not RM
Willo and Simmo – Toure is getting away from them.
Guti – Not much has happened down the left.
Amal – Couple of neat touches and passes, still not much to comment on
Abeid & Bigi – Rough tackling ball winners, very accurate passes too, looked good.
Sammy – Nice work when needed good control and link up with Shola
Shola and Demba – Done what was needed. Nice jump by Ba, typical Shola like work by Shola.

    Player of the half: Santon
    Runner-Up: Amalfitano
Crap Player of the Half: Abeid
    Runner-up: Sammy A.

This is the second time I’ve watched Abeid play. He looks like he should be no where near the first team. Seems to read the game well enough, but lingers on the ball and rushes passes.

Amalfitano is very good, aside from his crossing ability. Quick passing the ball and composed. He’s already ahead of Sammy Ameobi in my mind, who I’ve never been impressed with. A midfielder, who can’t pass the ball well, is a liability.

Have to hand it to Pards this is one weird line up. That we are actually a goal up is amazing. Or Monaco are that crap. See, you speak like your opinion is fact: “He will know he’s having a shit game” – will he? I could be wrong, but seeing as AP is a smart guy, I’m sure neither he nor Amalfitano himself are expecting him to dazzle straight away. This is primarily about fitness.

If you’re watching the GolTV stream, I can’t blame you mate. Apparently James Tarvenier came off for Mehdi Abeid. Weird, eh? haha.

I heard Sunderland are signing a striker on a free called “Emilio Heskino”. Anybody else heard the same?

His Agent has told Llambias he wants to come back to Newcastle, hence all the interest. Whatever wages have been offered by us, believed to be £65K per week has been agreed by Carroll and his Agent.

  • 317 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 16, 2012 at 7:57 PM

Marveaux didn’t give the ball away once. If he stays fit, he should be starting every week. His through-balls are incredible. Obertan looked good as did Ryan Taylor. Heard Abeid played well.

We need about 16 new players (5/6 first team) if we want to do well next season.

Simpson looked poor again. Gosling and Gutierrez kept giving the ball away.

  • 318 leeb1982 // Jul 16, 2012 at 7:58 PM

Don’t think last season’s flak for obertan was unfair. He has potential and bags of pace but doesn’t use it anywhere near enough. All in all much better second half. Know it’s early and it seemed more about game time but would like to see more players in natural position

  • 319 Minato // Jul 16, 2012 at 7:59 PM

Very satisfied with that. Not going to go in with a long one here given that’s its just a pre season game, so will exclude the usual suspects. Particularly impressed with Abeid and Bigirimana, both looking composed. In the later stages happy with Gosling and Marveux. All in all a good work out and pleased with what I saw.

  • 320 pardews plan B // Jul 16, 2012 at 7:59 PM

His wages will be halved but he will be on performance related bonuses
For each goal – a bottle of l’oreal (because “he’s worth f**k all” – Derek llambias)
For each assist – a new piece for his drumkit (something fresh to hit)

  • 322 breno95 // Jul 16, 2012 at 8:02 PM

    Voodoo
You forgot the man of the summer window. RVP. He came from Holland and what a player he is and has been EPL.

Don’t understand the Simpson bashers. He played every game last season and showed he is a very capable RB. If this Debuchy saga ever ends and he is signed we need good back up players hence I would be happy for Simpson to stay.
Got most else as TDS not been on much?

  • 323 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 16, 2012 at 8:49 PM

You need to understand that Ashely’s putting £15m in to sign players for the development squad. We must have released about 10 players over the past few months. 5/6 new players for the first team squad is pretty reasonable.

Also, I do agree that Obertan got some unfair criticism last season. It’s a joke how players like Simpson and Williamson get away with it most of the time. Obertan had more good points about him last season than Williamson and Simpson did.

I’ve got a funny feeling that Santon may leave. Even if he doesn’t, I still think we might go in for Cissokho.

Would anyone accept £25m for Tiote if we could sign Anita and Scharner for £6m? That’ll be an extra £19 towards strengthening the rest of the team.
