20 year-old James Tavernier impressed on last summer’s American tour, and we fully expect the Bradford-born youngster to impress again during this pre-season.
James Tavernier in training
James made a good start on Friday night, when he looked very steady at the back for Newcastle, and there’s a good likelihood he’ll get another start tonight against Monaco in Landsberg am Lech, Germany
This is what James told the Evening Chronicle before tonight’s second pre-season game, which kicks off at 7:00 pm local time:
“I was always confident that the contract would get sorted.” “You’ve got to be confident in the way you play, and hopefully when that shows on the pitch, the background stuff will take care of itself.”
“I’ll just keep on playing, and hopefully getting better and better as a player.” “My main aim is to play in a black-and-white shirt this season.” “But. if I have to go out on loan again, I’d be happy to do that.” (that’s the spirit!)
“If the manager thinks that would take me in the right direction, and make me a better player, I’d do that.” “Obviously, my main aim’s to be in the first team at Newcastle.”
“It’s always good to get the first game out of the way.” “That was the last game of their pre-season, so their fitness levels were obviously much higher than ours.” “It was a good game, and we just need to improve.”
It looks very likely that the deal to get Mathieu Debuchy to Newcastle has been worked out, but the news is that he’s still on vacation, but we do expect Newcastle to be able to wrap up this deal, and it will be a stellar signing for the club.
And news today that Borussia Monchengladbach have agreed a fee with FC Twente for Luuk de Jong – who’s he again? 😀
If Danny Simpson leaves in the summer once Debuchy arrives on Tyneside, then James could be second choice at right-back, and if that’s the case, manager Alan Pardew may decide to keep the youngster at the club this season, and he’ll get some playing time in the first team.
But it’s good to see that James is willing to go out on loan, if that’s what the Newcastle manager decides is the right thing to do for the 20 year-old.
But the big news that’s been blasted on the front pages of papers and web-sites since last night, is that Newcastle want Andy Carroll back at Newcastle, and Andy has told friends he is keen to rejoin his home-town club.
There’s bound to be developments on this story in the coming days.
For the record, James Tavernier has already played 52 first team games mainly out on loan, and currently he has two appearances in the Newcastle first team, and it was only last February that Alan Pardew said James looked as good as Danny Simpson in training.

Interesting fact. If you say his name in a robotic voice it sounds like a transformer changing shape in the original cartoon

I’d say you might be right. It’s not the most convincing article I’ve read, it has to be said. Cheers though
