Sky Sports is reporting tonight that Newcastle have made an official €4M (about £3.12M) bid for FC Twente center-back Douglas.
Newcastle make first official bid for Douglas
Previous reports had said that a fee as much as £5M had already been agreed between the two clubs, but it seems Newcastle have now moved in to get what is their number one center-back target.
Newcastle have missed out on their number one striker target at FC Twente, 21 year-old Dutchman Luuk de Jong, who seems to prefer to join German club Borussia Monchengladbach.
And news on Sunday evening that the Tyneside club have made an audacious bid to bring big Andy Carroll back to Tyneside from Liverpool.
Sky Sports are reporting late tonight that Newcastle are now in the lead to sign the 6’4″ Brazilian Douglas , who has ambitions to play for Holland at International level, and whose transfer has been complicated by a number of factors this summer.
London clubs Chelsea and Tottenham have also been linked with the 24-year-old, with reports that Italian giants Juventus have also been interested in the big defender.
Newcastle sent Managing Director Derek Llambias and Secretary Lee Charnley to Holland just over two weeks ago, in an effort to do a double deal with FC Twente for Luuk de Jong and Douglas, but that effort turned out to be unsuccessful.
Sky Sports is reporting that this is Newcastle’s opening bid for the Brazilian defender, so we will await news of FC Twente’s response to this first bid, which is not high, and we would expect them to turn if down.
It seems FC Twente are still smarting from the deal two years ago, when Newcastle paid only £3.5M for Cheick Tiote, and have made him into one of the best holding defenders in the Premier League.
We think they will try to squeeze as much money as they can out of Newcastle for their big defender, and even hope to turn this into another bidding war.
