Is Danny Simpson Leaving Newcastle Once Debuchy Is Signed?

10:59 am, Wednesday, July 18th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 569 Comments

Whenever Danny Simpson is interviewed we immediately think whether the 25 year-old will be signing anew contract at Newcastle, or whether he’s just waiting for Newcastle to sign Mathieu Debuchy from Lille, and then he’ll be on his way, probably to Reading.

Danny Simpson – in action on Monday night in Germany

The Danny Simpson saga has been running for over a year now, and yet whenever the lad is interviewed he always comes over very positively, and he always says he wants to stay at Newcastle, when he’s asked.

Danny got a good start to getting back to match fitness, when he played the whole game for Newcastle at right-back on Monday night, in the 1-0 win against Monaco, at the Hacker-Pschoor-Arena, in Landsberg am Lech, Germany.

This is what Danny told the Newcastle web-site today:

“It was a great result. We obviously lost the other day, so it was nice to get that win as quick as possible.”  “It’s about getting fitter as well though and I think you could see that we looked fitter and stronger.”

“”only got 20 minutes against Chemnitzer, so it was nice to get 90 minutes this time and to push myself on.” “We also introduced some of the other lads back into it and we are progressing every day – you can see that for yourself.”

“We looked solid, got a clean sheet as well, and that gives us a good platform to build on.”  ”We want to be winning games, whether it’s friendlies or league games. We had that last year and we want it back straight away.”

“There’s now five days until our final game of this tour, so that gives us a chance to step it up even more, and hopefully by the time we get back we will be flying.”

Good words again from Danny Simpson, and of course the lad has always been a first class professional, and so far he’s played 112 times for Newcastle with a couple of goals – a good return in the three full seasons he’s played at Newcastle United.

Whether that will end up as his full record at Newcastle, we’ll just have to wait and see, but we would not be  surprised if once Newcastle sign Mathieu Debuchy from Lille, then Danny will be allowed to leave Newcastle for around £2M – and probably to Reading.

That’s if we sign Mathieu Debuchy.

And those new strips are starting to grow on me – I like them a lot now.

Comments welcome.

Luuk de Jong has signed for Borussia Moenchengladbach, and Lille are apparently saying Debuchy will not be leaving the club this summer.

So i think we might be seeing Simpson next season

  • 5 DevonMag // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:09 AM

DevonMag – What exactly is our system mr.manager? … everyone that plays FM thinks they know footy these days…sheesh… As for Affelay, he is a decent player however imho we have enough injury prone players as it is (Benny, Saylor, Marv and others that are coming from behind) that i would prefer if we didnt add to that list.

Listen mates, we all have players we rate and ones we don’t but you (any of you) have to stop pretending like your “transfer suggestions” are relevant cause they are not. For instance…i HOPE we manage to bring AC back but i’m not in a position to say that we SHOULD or SHOULDN’T bring him back. Thats up to the professionals.

Valci, are you serious mate? “you (any of you) have to stop pretending like your “transfer suggestions” are relevant cause they are not.” This is a football blog FFS! Are you really suggesting we shouldn’t write down the names of footballers we’d like our club to sign and post them? I didn’t come on here saying my mate down the pub has it nailed on that Affelay is in Jesmond Dene awaiting a medical! I said I’d forking love it if we signed a player like Affelay! The ‘system’ I was talking about was really just having Affelay, Ben Arfa and Cabaye in a line behind Cisse. That’s my tactical limit I’m afraid but I’m sorry I wound you up with ideas above my station… Good grief!

  • 6 pieceofpapiss // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:11 AM

@ Devon, i agree with your post but how is Ben Arfa injury prone? He’s had one major injury since he joined and that was a broken leg. He’s had a few niggles but so has everyone!!

  • 7 NUFCWill1986 // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:15 AM

I think Devon might mean behavioural issues, as it took him a while to break back into the team when fit.

  • 8 DevonMag // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:16 AM

Papis, Will, sorry I copied Valci’s previous comment to respond to but forgot to put quotation marks on his. My coment starts at “Valci are you serious…”

Ben Arfa is certainly not, in my opinion, injury prone.

  • 9 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:17 AM

If we’re going to progress we need competition for places at FB.

With a congested fixture list any injuries to Santon or Simpson will leave us with Raylor and Perch playing Thursdays (possibly away in Israel) and then again on Sunday.

I hope Simpson signs his contract and we sign Debuchy.

Now I could be wrong and know we still have a while left in the transfer window but, i don’t like these reports. (regarding stupidly low bids for players)This transfer window is THE one where we have to bring in much needed players. We will be playin in Europe ffs! All reports that nufc are not putting there hand in therir pocket. Taylor will no doubt get injured again and we have two strikers for one of the longest toughest campaigns in years. I’m all for bringing the youngsters through bit we don’t have enough depth in the places we need it. I could be wrong, I could be over reacting but I’ve rarely been negative since AC was sold and I’m. Just worried for this season comin up. There must be others feeling the same

  • 14 Valci // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:27 AM

    “DevonMag // Jul 18, 2012 at 10:44 AM

Do Barca honestly only want 4 million euros for Affelay!? Let’s offer them 5 million quid and be done with it!

    DevonMag // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:09 AM

I said I’d forking love it if we signed a player like Affelay!”

See the difference between the two mate? Theres a difference between “sign Affelay!!!” and “a player of Affelay’s style would be nice”. Thats what im talking about.

As for Benny’s injury proneness maybe thats an exaggeration on my part. He seems fragile to me though it might have something to do with the serious injury he had. The point about Affelay stands though.

  • 15 sweendog // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:28 AM

if we don’t get debuchy its sebastin Yung .. I still reckon debuchy is happening ..

  • 16 DevonMag // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:32 AM

I seem to be suffering quite a lot from that poor editing job. I was quite irate, but certainly not anywhere near the realm of anger management :) My comment starts in the last paragraph, I wouldn’t address myself at the start of a comment. Nor would I slag off Affellay as injury prone before suggesting I’d absolutely love us to sign him.

  • 17 outsidethebox // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:32 AM

toon wouldn,t let simpson go till they got replacement…
reading sign gunter …does this mean that simpson is staying and lille playing hardball over debuchy and saying he cannot leave…bindippers sign two cf , s does this mean carrol is on way…doubt if they would want ba even if ba offered after two signings …
conclusion ….simpson staying unless we manage debuchy signing and if not sign anita for left back and switch santon … carrol to replace best + ranger ……douglas and also good as soon as we can (could there be work permit problem with good )…easy.. sorted

  • 18 Valci // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:33 AM

DevonMag – also…it wasnt about you winding me up mate. I may have misinterpreted part of your comment. I’ve just seen to many people around here shouting to sign player X because of our system and style of footy…or to not sign player Y because “OH NO WERE GOING BACK TO HOOFBALL!!”…and thats basically what i was referring to when i said people need to let the pros do their work and decide team strategy and why a transfer target is or is not valuable for us… because we just dont know(or even understand) the inner workings of a football team. Anyway…sorry if i took it too far though…

  • 19 r and r // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:36 AM

Just a thought,Babayaro has declared himself bankrupt ( febuary 2011)
,we could all chip in and pay for his taxi up here.He would cost us nowt and we could put Santon on the right.Simmo could then move on to Reading and Babayaro and Ashley could spend the profits at the casino.

  • 20 DevonMag // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:37 AM

Valci, honestly mate are you serious? You’re dissecting the semantics off my comments? “Let’s offer them 5 million quid and be done with it” was a speculative, irreverent statement. “A player of Affelay’s style would be nice” and “sign Affelay’ both sound great to me! Sign Affelay Mike!

  • 21 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:37 AM

Regarding CARROLL this is becoming totally effin ludicrous….

we sold him for 35 to get quality players now we are willing to pay MORE THAN 10 mil for a dud in all honesty compared the likes of CISSE and BA….if they do get him it would be a catastrophe for the club, and will make problems within the team mark my words…

  • 29 Acuna92 // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:54 AM

The thing with Simpson is he’s a very good defender but a very average footballer.

  • 30 Valci // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:55 AM

gorgonzola – your comment was made in very strong terms and it feels like you are trying to pass you opinion as fact saying things such as “if they do get him it would be a catastrophe for the club, and will make problems within the team mark my words…” when clearly none of us know what strategy MA or AP have for the club and for all we know AP might rate Carroll very highly.

  • 31 ToonAndy // Jul 18, 2012 at 11:56 AM

Affelay for 4 million would just be a waist of 4 millions in my opinion… He’s shite…. I honestly would rather play obertan or vuckic… Plus, Barcelona certainly don’t sell good players for that little!

  • 34 Munster Mag // Jul 18, 2012 at 12:03 PM

Gorgonzola, Carroll isnt a dud, you mad fool! :) In fairness, he’s a good player but needs a different service than he got at Liverpool. Pards like big strikers and Demba Ba’s goal against Monaco in some ways re-inforces that. also expect to see plenty of 4-4-2 next season, unless Pardew feels more relaxed that his full backs can defend.

We need a new striker, but surely we also need another creative midfielder, not to mind at least one full back, and a centre half!! Not too worried about those positions as we seem to be very active, but if Cabaye gets injured, as he will, who will take his place?

Bigi – Too soon for him
Vukic – Dont make me laugh
    Gosling – Even worse

Also, whats the word on Debuchy – seems he has a number of offers or is that all pants?? Cheers, havent been on the blog fopr a few days.

I have to agree with you here.

Some peoples reasoning appears to be that selling him for 35m, then purchasing him for 15m, represents a brilliant profit of 20m.

Except actually, we’d be better of just keeping the 35m!

15m is a huge huge huge outlay for a club of our size, and it could be used to strengthen the club in so many other ways. Not just transfers – I’d actually rather stick a few million into the clubs academy and infastructure to try and get our academy up to the top grading.

you are right Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has told Andy Carroll’s advisors that the striker can leave the club, with Newcastle believed to be preparing a new bid of £16m.

The strange thing is that the who affair seems to be based around sentiment, and wanting to get a local lad back home.

But since when has Ashley cared about sentiment? Or Newcastle’s tradition or anything?

I don’t understand it at all. Pardew, if he is to be believed, has very little to do with this. So what on earth are Lambias and Ashley doing?

Why spend all year drawing up lists of transfer targets, only to throw it in the bin and buy back 4 goals a season Andy Carroll?

Nice to hear from Simmo, can’t really see him still being at the club come September though. Like I’ve been saying for weeks, I really do hope we manage to get Debuchy on Tyneside. He’s a great full back and did his reputation no harm during the Euros. Really love the thought of Santon and Debuchy bombing down the flanks on the overlap and providing ammunition for Cisse and Ba. The fact that Debuchy came out and said he wanted to move yesterday was a good sign. Hopefully we can agree something with Lille as soon as they find a replacement.

Also, just wanted to say that I’ve got a new post up on my blog written by another NUFC fan. You can read it here:

  • 56 Valci // Jul 18, 2012 at 12:41 PM

Mates…heres the thing…some of you sau Carroll is worth 7, some say 10, some say 15 etc. it doesnt matter. The only thing that matter is what NUFC’s valuation of the player is. Saying that you would be disappointed if we pay 15-20mil for Carroll instead of 10-15mil for de Jong is like saying you don’t trust Pardew/Carr’s valuation of a player. If they rate Carroll better then de Jong or whoever then i’m fine with that because i trust their judgement. Sure, sometimes people get it wrong but we (the people on this blog) dont have the position or authority to claim the people in the NUFC staff is wrong. We can voice our opinion but it counts for very little in reality…

  • 57 Carlo.man // Jul 18, 2012 at 12:42 PM

Pardew might not be overly involved with the transfer process itself but among those other things he did also say “If we are involved, then it will be because of the figures, not anything else, because we know he’s good enough.”. So imho its safe to say that if the transfer is going to happen it will have his approval.

Seen that on Twitter mate. Not to fussed what we pay for Carroll but that’s only if we keep Ba. Having Ba, Cisse and Carroll will really push NUFC in the right direction. Debuchy would also be excellent as well as Douglas and Anita. If we manage to keep our best players and bring them for names i mentioned in the we are in for some exciting times.

  • 62 Valci // Jul 18, 2012 at 12:51 PM

nufc786 – Yeah i know what you mean. But if our staff rate Carroll and want him back i believe MA will dig a little deeper in his pocket since it appears its up to him to oversee the process anyhow. I dont think that our staff have forgotten our monetary constraints for a second…

  • 63 Toon1978 // Jul 18, 2012 at 12:52 PM

I dont care what anybody says 16 mill is an INFLATED price for a rather SLOW, techically weakish ST that is off form in reality.

It really is the case of if Carroll is 16 Cisse is worth 40 simple.
I am not against Carroll coming that much as I am paying 75% of our transfer budget to a SINGLE player…

People we dont have a RB LB yet we dont have A CB one more injury we are looking down the barrel why do we have to play with our lives here …..

For 16 mill we can get TWO young CF playing their heart out…
    For me this really stinks….

I think you will have to come to terms that people like Gorgonzola and I have different view to you. It doesn’t make you right and doesn’t make us wrong. I know many right thinking people if they had 16M wouldn’t be spending it on carroll when we already have superior strikers in Cisse and Ba wo have heen successful wherever they have been. I’d much rather we brought in another Carr gem and with 16M we could get another 2/3 really good players and avoid any potential trouble.

  • 69 Valci // Jul 18, 2012 at 12:59 PM

gorgonzola – jeez… i like Cisse but way to go overboard. Transfermarkt apparently rates Carroll at 13,5mil pounds and i think its about right. Anywhere around 15mil seems about right imho. No need to get angry about the issue as its not in our hands anyways mate. Like i was saying before…MA might supplement the budget if it does happen…theres no way of knowing so relax…

  • 70 Toon1978 // Jul 18, 2012 at 1:01 PM

Club has always said that if the right player comes along then NUFC will do all they can to get him. There is no way we will drop interest in Douglas, Anita and Debuchy no matter how much the club pay for Carroll. That would be pretty silly really when we are in need of a full back and and a centre half.

Shearer is worth every penny cause he could volley, head, play the ball on the ground, cross, was a great finisher, fighter, agressive, team leader, he could take free kicks and very well, penalties….

I look at it this way, Cisse at 10 mill Carroll can ONLY be less….
or for arguments sake 10 mill pushing it 11…. really pushing it….but 16…..

I struggle to see a re-enforced newcastle side for europa league if we are to get the two kids we got plus Carroll…

Tiote goes we are in trouble, how is Saylor coping nobody knows….I for one cant bare the though of willo being a starter next season even though he really improved as the season wore on…..

I’d honestly be pretty concerned about us spending £16m on ANYONE.

We do not have that kind of money to spend on any one player.

The fact that it’s Andy Carroll makes it even worse though.

I should say though, I’d like him back – but nowhere near that fee, absolutely nowhere near it.

    Williamson hopfeully 4th choice CB
Oberton hopefully comes good because he has massive potential
Bigi not ready for 1st team but would certainly keep him involved and around cup games etc

I really dont know what the big arguements are over the whole Carrol fiasco, the way i see it is if he does come back for say 15 mil thats a 20 mil profit that has allowed us to build a superb foundation for an amazinng team and adding carrol as a different option up top just adds to our abilities, also if he stays with the bindippers weve made silly money for a very young player who may or may not turn out to be a great cf. Also i dont think 15 mil is to much to ask for him after all his form at the end of the season and in the euros wasnt half bad and he has now barged his way into the england setup, what everyone seems to forget is the value liverpool paid was a last day madness binge for a striker as they got silly money for torres. I just think if it happens then good and if it doesnt im sure theres a gem in waiting.

Wud defo include Ba in any deal for Carroll, for me we have seen the best Ba has to offer, if we can now use him to strengthen the squad we should, and for me Carroll and Cisse wud be dynamite together. Tell me a defence who wud look forward to coping with them 2 on form. Ba has been por since xmas.

Hahaha Its posts like this, that make me question peoples reasoning… Hahaha Carroll has been poor since last January. Ba is 10 times the player Carroll will ever be. If Carroll. Is good with the ball to feet, why is Rodgers allowing him to leave?? Carroll has got no ball control at all, that’s why the scousers want rid. and to think to give them Ba (who was played out of position and we went on a 7 game winning streak with) plus cash?? My word!!!

Lete get this right. We refused to go higher.(reportedly) than 12 mill for luuk dejong and meet his 16 mill valuation (reportedly) but we are willing to pay 14 mill (there abouts) for a players who has been poor over the last year??
yes I wud like Carroll BUT for less than 10 million. Toe he wud be 3 rd choice. And check the toast BA AND Cisse are scary enuf as it is.

gorgonzola – i agree with some of your points actually. Still, Carroll is a couple of years younger and while i think he still needs a little polishing around the edges i think he will turn into a top class striker. Remember that Cisse’s numbers have only become impressive in the last 2 years (except a few good stints in Ligue 2 which is hardly impressive as a league) at Freiburg and NUFC. SO he actually matured as a striker around the age of 25 which is pretty common actually…Carroll is still only 23…thats all im saying.

We need to get rid of Simpson and Williamson if we want to progress as a football club. I’d let Gosling go out on loan.

£16m for Carroll is too steep. Would rather us get 2 Cisse type signing for £8m each.

We’d be mad not to pay the extra loot to sign Debuchy and Anita.

Now we’ve missed out on De Jong, we should go for Hoilett and Carroll on loan. If not Carroll, then another decent striker.

I’d rather see us sign Sakho or Alderewereild than Douglas. Our £3m bid is a joke. We’re playing silly games here. Don’t want to see us making random bids for players like Bryan Ruiz again at the last minute.

    May I budge in here.

Now U say in ur post that, Carroll is younger and cisses goal return wasn’t good at that age, but that is not TRUE, cisse through out his career has scored a goal every 3 games, it actually improved to a goal every 2 and now its a goal every game.
Yes Carroll has a future, but for 13-16 mill we dnt and should not buy a prospect!! For 13 mill we shud be buying a near complete article, when Liverpool paid 35 mill I hope they weren’t buying a prospect, for that kind of money they shud have been buying a complete article.

  • 127 Taking the Papiss // Jul 18, 2012 at 1:59 PM

I do think we are missing the point slightly here. I don’t know about you, but I don’t buy into tehn we could buy x number of players with the money we would have to spend on Carroll.

I think there are areas of the team that have been identified for strengthening and we don’t have a total budget of say £20m. Pards has always said that if the right players become available we have to be interested. On this basis, Debuchy has become available so we are going after him, same with Douglas. Anita now seems keen to push a deal through and by the looks of it the money is there for him too. I believe the Carroll deal is pure opportunism- he has become available and at the right price we would be stupid not to be in the running.

I certainly don’t think it is a case of there is £20m to spend and Carroll will take up that budget. Also if we offered £12m for Luuk de Jong, this is the same as a £16m bid for Carroll minus the 25%.

The last thing is that it really bugs me that everyone wanted de Jong but doesn’t want Carroll. Firstly, he counts as homegrown important for Europe etc, but more importantly he has proven himself at NUFC already, Pards knows what to expect and is confident he can get him firing again- who knows if Luuk de Jong will fit in, lots of players have cost big-ish money and been flops after scoring loads of goals in Holland e.g. Alfonso Alves, Dirk Kuyt, even Suarez who has played extremely well has scored nowhere near the same number of goals he got in Holland!

  • 128 Small World // Jul 18, 2012 at 1:59 PM

Don’t want to be a doomwatch about the Carroll situation, however…

Is it not possible, that we are looking to buy him as a replacement for Cisse, who is currently sitting out pre-season games?

I think that any forward including Carroll would be an inadequate replacement; however it would be sensible of the club to get a replacement for Cisse, before letting him go for a silly amount. Otherwise we’d be had over a barrell as Liverpool were after getting rid of Torres last year.

Personally I’d have Cisse, Ba & Carroll at the club next year. But who knows?

Just hoping we’re not looking to make a £35mil profit this time. Carroll in £15m, Cisse out £50m

  • 129 LGFUAD21 // Jul 18, 2012 at 2:04 PM

    EVeryone needs to chill.

We come on here to discuss and debate. That means we talk about fantasy transfers. So why is everybody gettting their knickers in a about “Football Managers” and speculation.

It’s just a bit of hypothesizing.

Without out it all we would have to say is:

    a) (For the zillianth time) this should be our starting line up (followed by a posting of last years starting XI)
    b) Simmo/Willo/Shola/Perch are sh!te (change the forking record)
or c)Where are the tansfers? (again change the record)

Its summer break silly season. We dont have league games to comment on, or next week fixtures to discuss. So if you cant join in the please p!55 off until you can when the season starts.

On another note. Those of you shouting down people for saying things liek “We should go for Affellay at the price”. “X would be a good signing” Whatever. Because as some people put it “Stop speculating/you think you know football because you play a game/ you cant judge players from youtube”

We arent scouts, granted FM and Fifa are terrible basis for rating players, youtube and the like is all we really have to go on along with stats.
I will honestly say the only players we have been linked with that I have seen in great detail in the past is Debuchy, Hoilett and Carroll. But if I say “I think Anita would be a good shout” fi say it because from what I have seen I think he looks to have a lot of ability.

So I say to those people with these opinions. You really shouldnt come on an online blog/forum because you have clearly missed the point of why these things exist in the first place.

  • 133 LGFUAD21 // Jul 18, 2012 at 2:11 PM

And just another crazy theory here for why we shouldnt buy Carroll. such the strategist I am.

He is now unsettled at LFC and that is likely to affect his performance should he stay. But if we were to buy him all we would be doing is giving £15-20m to Liverpool to invest in more signings and likely strengthening their squad.

If we dont sign him, Scumpool are stuck with Downing, Adam blah blah blah. If we do they could potentially sign better players to make up for this cr@p.

Dont sign him and keep ahead of the competition. We need a 3rd choice striker that can do a job much like Besty. We dont need Carroll. The striker should either be Besty level and cheap, or young enough to still be around once either Ba or Cisse move on.

that’s a big cut – but if he would do that, it would
surely silence the accusations of being mercenary
and reinforce the belief that he really wants to be
part of the new NUFC scene.

At £14 million, he wouldn’t be a bad buy, but if we
had the choice of Debuchy, Douglas and Anita for
£14-15 million, or Carroll for the same, I know which
    option I would go for.

Taking the Papiss .. agreed .. Carroll is a good player .. not yet a great player .. coached right he could be .. I think there is room for Carroll and Ba .. we would be nuts to let Ba go .. brilliant player ..
if we get the targets we are looking I think we have a permanent top 6 side ..
Anita, Debuchy, Carroll, Douglas .. all top players .. I think we need these players to stay high in the prem and challenge in the cups.

What I hope could happen is in some games play
Ba, Carroll and Cisse .. can you imagine .. bit like Shearer, Ferdinand and Asprilla .. :-)

Thats te exact reason i dont want him… If he wanted permanent with a pay cut then come home, if he only wants a loan so he still has high wages… We shud stay away caise his hart still wont be at the club

  • 144 Premiership Manager // Jul 18, 2012 at 2:32 PM

Carroll will be an assett to the club if he comes back. His goal percentage in the last season at Newcastle was 65% compared to Ba’s average of 47% in respect to games played and it’s easy to forget he was playing in a very average team compared to the team we have today.

Is he worth 16M is another question, however if Pardew, Carr and Ashley think he is worth the investment that is good enough for me and should be for everybody else.

We’ve got a good squad and Carroll will only enhance it, he will also have a point to prove and that makes him a very dangerous proposition for oposing teams.

Debuchy seems to be dragging his feet however with the prospect of European football it seems that MA and DL are keen to invest in the squad and provide the financial backing Pardew requires.

We’ve bought and sold very wisely and the club is heading in the right direction on all fronts so it should be an interesting season

    NUFC_LEAZES END

    Carroll?

Im not against the idea, But for the money being banded around. Never.

Carroll had a good half season for us. In a team that was tailored to him because we didnt have a great deal else to do. His Championship season was good but again hardly anything to have a wet dream about.

Compare our midfield then with now and we have so much more going for us. We are no longer that team just back from relegation trying to survive and therefore using a cheap 1 dimensional tactic.

Liverpool believed the hype and got their just deserves. I think this signing for say £15m would be a hark back to the Freddy era.

What if he doesnt come through. We are stuck with a relatively expensive signing for us with no sell on value and no takers. Especially because after his flop at ‘Pool he has already lost credibility. Imagine what would happen to that diminishing cred if he then flopped at his hometown club that made, the club he really wanted to come back to.

Signing him also ignores the fact that he is overpriced because he is English.

Look at Gameiro. He left Lorient for PSG for soemthing like £12m with a ton of add ons. And that was after 2-3 good season for Lorient. One “poor season” for PSG (still scored 10 in 24 in the league) and he is now rated at £6m.

Carroll left for stupid money when in reality he was probably only worth about £15m back then (£20m at a push). He has been poor for a year and a half now. His value should be about £8-10m now realistically. Less if you go solely on performance.

Scumpool should either try and work with him or simply accept they made a ridiculous signing.

If and it’s a big IF nufc have a 20-25 % sell on fee then we are in the drivers seat.

For example if we bid £13 million that would equivicate to a £17 million bid from another team. 25% of 17 is 4.25 million so subtract that from 17 and Liverfool are selling Carroll for less than Nufc are offering.

Nobody would offer more than 17 surely?!

    Premiership Manager

As with all statistics, the more results you have the more accurate a measure.

Your Carroll % is based on 19 or so games (and it was actually closer to 60%)

Lets dig a little deeper and try and at least get some depth into the figures if we are to base opinions on them

So Carroll from Championship season onwards (just to be fair, this is when he started scoring).

100 league games played since then for any team.
    34 goals scored.

Thats 34%. Roughly 1 goal every 3 games

Now Ba. Firstly I’ll do from his Hoffenheim days to present.
143 league games played. Scored 60 goals.

Thats about 42% Roughly 2 goals every 5 games to AC’s 2 for 6 games. Now consider that Ba’s tally relates to the Prem and Bundesliga while AC’s takes 17 goals from the Championship in.

Also we havent considered the style of play and how the goals were scored.

It’s called “Creative accounting” you can make anybody look good if you pick the rate parameters

Why would a club already pay £35m (the highest ever amount for an english player) Then agree to give us another 25% of what he sells for.

Clubs will generally try and at least get back what they paid for young players like Carroll.

I cant argue with that. You have made me see the stupidity in that comment.

I just mean we need a striker that can grab a few and doesnt break the bank. I mentioned other day that I’m not too worried about our attack. We have 2 brilliant strikers. HBA who we know can score. I expect more goals from Cabaye and hope Marv can chip in with a few. Then the fact Obertan is clearly being converted into a CF and we have Shola, Sammy and Vuckic. Put it this way, our strike options have more depth than Arsenal did last season.

Maybe replace Best but when did he play from when Cisse came in. And the same for Lovenkrands. The 2 that have left.

Only Guthrie out of the players that have left made a significant contribution to the club last season. Along with Best who did until Cisse came in.

wow…im away from the blog for 1 and a half hour and 100+ new comments to sift through… see thats why i love this blog hehe.

On to the issue at hand i think even the pro-Carroll members (myself included) realize the price of 16mil is on the steep side. I do love me a good old fashioned striker and imho with Carroll its not all about air balls…but nevermind that…

Like ive said before…you guys need to see the bigger picture here. MA is a business man…if hypothetically AP and the staff told him to bring Carroll back because they can make him top class and the investment will bear fruit then he will because he is investing in a potentially top class striker for the next 10 years (this is an educated guess since i think he would be hesitant to leave a second time).

Our staff would not push for it for nothing since more often then not these kind of mistakes cost them their jobs in this industry. Unlike us, they have something on the line when they voice their opinions. If they convince MA that in the long run it’s the right decision we will get him…if not then we wont. I believe that in MA’s eyes it’s all about return of investment as it would be for any businessman.

And how come Some ppl would be happy to see ba go the other way its madness demba is one the main reasons were in europe! He played great all season bearing in mind he was played out of position for the 2nd half

Someone bought up his knee earlier but how many games did he miss? And how much of the season did carroll miss when we sold him not to mention chunks of this season through injury
One last thing thats bugging me sorry! How come demba ba has been branded a mercenry for IF he moves because of his clause but andy simply made a mistake when he moved for an extra £50k a week?

Dont think hes worth the cash tbh in football your only as good as your last season and his was shocking there are much better players out there for better money on less wages and would bring less agro to the toon he will never live up to the hype thats been put on the lad because he just doesnt seem to be up for the challenge just my view on it

I think we’ll get Carroll. He’s got 4 years left on his contract. Liverpool can accept any offers that clubs make. But If Caroll says he’s not going there is naff all they can do about it. So they have a very unhappy player warming the bench costing them 400,200 a year.

Remember the pictures of Carroll walking back and forth with his mobile stuck to his ear? Probably getting chatted up by Dogleash? I reckon the same is happening the other way right now. “You just hang in there Andy.” “We’ll get you back home.”

  • 202 SupaToonKid // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:12 PM

Got to agree with Ketsbaia (for once). I wouldn’t pay any more than £12M for Carroll (and that at an almighty push) £8-10M would be far more preferable. If the Bindippers want £20M then i’m not wanting that at all. If were prepared to pay £20M for a CF then i’d sign Remy as he offers more than AC with the strength and power but also pace & versatility.

Debuchy is nearly wrapped up so thanks Simmo for you help but it’s time to leave. Douglas looks likely to happen as well also would love Anita to come in and play alongside Tiote & also play LB when Santon is injured/suspended. Hopefully we can get a deal for Hoilett as well and then we’d be a super, super team.

Hed be top dog there and tgey would structure the whole team around him provided hes not scared of the challenge of proving himself instead of takin the safe option

  • 205 Spreadthetoon // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:17 PM

Quite frankly if the board of LFC have signed Borinin and Dempsey on the way then let Liverpool do their business. I would prefer to defer any signing of Carroll as a vastly reduced price in the winter window for ACN cup is about to start. Let Carroll go by the by. It was good business to sell Carroll for £35m so let’s not jog backwards. If we sign him then we need to act with the same prudence as we do with other signings.
If we were staunch in our bid response for Luke De Yong then we need to keep the same approach for Carroll. Personally I think Andy’s value given poor form since he left SJP as being between £7-£10m so I would not wish for the board to pay more than that. If we really want AC then wait till winter. As for Simmo the guys class, rarely gets injured and we need depth if our aspirations are to do well in EPL and Europa!

I don’t care what the club pay for players a long as they sign the right ones and cover most gaps on the squad.

If signing carrol or the reported 16/17 million still allows us to get debuchy and a CB I’m happy.

It depends if the club has a set budget or a one that can vary depending upon which player comes in for which position.

There is also no point comparing fees. Saying cisse was 8/9 so only time we should spend more is for a better striker. It is not always possible to get a perfect deal an even if it is we height have to wait.

I’m sure most fans would rather is have spent 13 million and cisse and had him for the full season and not 8 for half the season.

Sometimes you have to go a bit over the odds to get what you want when you want it.

Arsenal have balanced the books and in doing so have dismantled the invincible squad into one which is heavily reliant on one player and can’t win anything.

Got to have a balance between keepin on budget but sometimes being prepared to gamble a little if you want to go from Europa league challengers to chanpions league challengers.

  • 216 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:29 PM

Ruddy thats the reported budget either way to you does that justify carrolls pricetag?

  • 217 ToonDownSouth // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:29 PM

This £20m budget thing has been pulled out of someones arse though.

Pardew has said loads of times, if the right player is available at the right price, then they’ll look at it – there is no ‘transfer budget’.

I doubt thats how football works anymore anyway

  • 218 pardews plan B // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:30 PM

@stk important not sure i like that attitude. If a player is under contract with a club he should turn up to training and play for them. By all means hand in a transfer request but im not ken on the boycotting of his own job

  • 219 davybtoon // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:31 PM

Debuchy will happen if by some chance it don’t we will get a left back, gotta feeling Carroll will aswell but it won’t b anywhere near 16mill n if we get Douglas him n Carroll on set pieces will b scary

  • 220 WWYCD // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:32 PM

    STK
U really think Debuchy, who stated a few times that he loves Lille, to do that? I wouldn’t start counting chickens

  • 221 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Pardews plan B could we apply that logic into some fans wanting carroll to force liverpool to sell him to us?

  • 222 outsidethebox // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:32 PM

could be lambarse had agreed a deal for debuchy at 6mill euros 1 month ago ie £5 mill and they are working out details dragging it out as now price would be £4.75mill ..saving 250 k plus 250k in wages so saving 500k …no lambarse not that devious.

  • 223 rich_toonfan // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:32 PM

People also keep saying other players are available for less than Carroll.

Nobody knows for sure, there wages might be higher too, they might not even want to join us.

It’s all speculation. Sure the club will do the best deal for them. Ashley has shown he doesn’t like to waste money.

  • 224 davybtoon // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Plan b u mean jus like hba did to come here

  • 225 Toon_USA // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:34 PM

Nothing surprises me with NuFc anymore but I can’t see us paying more than 14 for Carroll, especially if we lose Ba with that deal. The 20 million budget is probably just a guesstimate when you tally up the price of a CB a RB and a CF in Newcastle’s price range. If we have to pay 25, and get grey quality, I’m sure we will but if we do the business for 15, then even better.

  • 226 davybtoon // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:35 PM

Yea debuchy who loves Lille has only told them he’s off whether they like it or not

  • 227 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:35 PM

He isn’t worth 18, he may not even be worth 15 on current form. However, if Carr, Pards and Co. have said that they want to look at him, regardless of the price, that means they see something in him that will benefit the team.

If a cheaper, better option was available to them I think they would rather do that kind of business or maybe it is a case of sticking the 2 fingers up at Liverpool and showing them that NUFC aren’t to be f**ked with.

I’d be happy to see AC in a toon shirt next season regardless of the price, if it was for a knockdown bargain then even better.

  • 232 dave 1961 // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:41 PM

those wondering about the 25% sell on its probably true as the Liverpool director that arranged the transfer was soon sacked by the owners for “not” having the 25% only on the profit, i guess this was an error caused by the time constraints, and i guess they wanted Carroll so badly they just caved in.

  • 233 davybtoon // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:41 PM

West ham sign maiga n Southampton sign clynne both on 4 year deals

  • 234 Novocastrian66 // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:41 PM

TADS. Carroll may view a move to West Ham as too far a step back. It’s not unconceivable that he would rather fight for his place in the Liverpool team than sign for Fulham or West Ham.
The longer this goes on the more desperate Liverpool will get. They want him out.

  • 235 ToonDownSouth // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:41 PM

Don’t believe everything that silver fox is saying. There is a motive for everything he says, we may not fully understand it but Ashley would not sign a player that Pards wouldn’t want, or hadn’t shown an interest in.

He has learned from the KK disaster and Pardew is too smart to allow himself to be steamrolled by MA.

I just think at some point all of this murkiness will become clear and we will be pleasantly surprised.

quick thinking, quick feet, confident passing. i was very impressed by this. really hope we get him now…tiote break up play, anita the deep lying play maker, cabaye in front pulling the strings where he’s best.

honestly, i’d content (not thrilled, mind) if we only ended up with debuchy, anita and good. not ideal, but anita and debuchy could transform our team

  • 241 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 18, 2012 at 4:45 PM

Novo thats my point he seems unprepared to prove himself and sees a move home as the easy option knowing a percentage of the fans would welcome him back

I think Pardew is saying Carroll’s transfer is Ashley’s deal because he’s playing locker-room politics.

Pardew devising a 20 million Striker transfer would upset the Senegalese contingent. Ba already seems rattled by Cisse’s ascendancy…better to blame Ashley, who they dont see on a daily basis.

I’m pretty sure Pardew is doing everything he can to get Carroll back. Carroll fits pefectly into Pardew’s style…which has never been, and never will be a Barcelona/Spain-style.

TADS. He would rather stay and fight for his place at Liverpool than move on to arguably a smaller club with limited ambition. That is him trying to prove himself. This is not the same as the Michael Owen scenario who stated he would rather be on the Man Utd bench than a regular starter for a smaller club. AC would rather stay and fight for his place than move to a club that do not match his ambition.
His situation has changed as Liverpool have stated he does not fit into their plans. This does not mean he should go anywhere just because a club has made an acceptable offer. Being a prodigal son is not easy either.

I see we’ve long ago left behind the title of this thread! It’s all about Andy now, so here’s my two-pen’worth:
He’s an England goal scoring c/f belonging here – let’s have him – there won’t be another for my lifetime, or yours, most certainly. He would strengthen the squad of any team you can mention.(Brendan Rodgers’ teams excepted- how the Liverpool owners must have ground their teeth when he made it so obvious he was desperate to unload Andy – not a born wheeler and dealer, then), Several posters have claimed there are loads of goalscorers we could buy for less money – I strongly doubt this – yer man is only 23, has already scored goals for his country, and belongs here – this is a unique package. You don’t have to be a AC fan to acknowledge this fact, he’s a unique package- made even more unique by the bizarre £35M we’re already in credit on him (thank you King Kenny, RIP – actually, thank you Mr Abramovich)

By the way, no pssters have mentioned this, but there is no chance at all all our present top players will still be on the books come the end of the window – no chsnce at all – Krul, Ba, Tiote, Cisse, Cabaye. Benny – they won’t all be here. I hope we only lose one or at worst two, but it’s worth bearing that in mind when discussing what AC could do for our squad.

I don’t see Andy Carroll as a replacement for Ba or Cisse. If a club is to have any ambition you need 4 good strikers. I’ll take 3 plus Shola! The point 9 makes is valid, but even more pertinent is it is unlikely they would all go throughout the season injury free. We need quality options. I would hope we hold on to the two Dembas. I don’t see signing another striker as evidence one of them will go. The southern press forget we have already off loaded two attacking options.

Dembas good in the air cisse is an athlete and us good in the air ffs even sholas good in the air carroll hardly looked convincing in the air for pool last season seemed to lose the ability to actually direct a header towards goal and one good goal for england doesnt change the fact he couldnt hit a barn door for 90% of the season in a team that created some of the most chances last season in fact liverpool created more chances than most trams last season

Oh and david silva didnt have to beat martin skertl in the air at the far post for his header in fact he didnt even have to jump

I know your on a one man mission to convince us all that we should sign carroll but not every1 wants him and am gonna need a better arguement than well david silva once scored a header

  • 293 rich_toonfan // Jul 18, 2012 at 5:46 PM

I think a mix of strikers work best.

Remember young Adam Campbell is rapid, only 17 but he won the same award as Torres and xavi at that Nike tournament the other year.

He is a talent an will break through in the next year or two. Til then Carroll cisse and Ba would be great, gives us options.

Think 20milloon is too much but Ashley is no fool with money so dot worry about the price.

Next season looks good already even without any further additions, anymore brought in now will give the team a huge boost and confidence to go one further

  • 294 mattyNUFC // Jul 18, 2012 at 5:47 PM

wouldn’t even want him back on a free, personally. par dew would feel more inclined to use him and what he contributes is i feel the opposite style of football we’re heading towards. i don’t think we’re there yet, playing with real, consistent stye, but i think we’re on the right track. it’s been pretty difficult to sit through some of the past ten years…AC in my mind represents a regress back to sloppy, one-facet football

that’s such an easy cop out. i assume you were referring to me…..mentioning that we want our team to play with style somehow stirs up this notion in people’s heads that only barca and spain can play with style….it doesn’t mean we think we can mimic quite possibly the greatest team to ever play the game…it just means we want to watch football as it was intended to be played…..with passing, movement, patience. why is that so quickly ridiculed??

  • 302 Munster Mag // Jul 18, 2012 at 6:03 PM

Toon down south …I agree. People seem to think that because we played more 4-3-3 and scored some good goals, that we play a shortb passing game. But we dont. We play quite a british/irish style of football. There’s NO way that Pards would have two small fast guys up front, and he loves 4-4-2 because it works well in protecting the fullbacks and getting two banks of 4 in defensive positions. Half the posters on this site havent a clue, and play the game on football manager with zany formations and overinflated transfer fees! Thus Cisse is worth 30 mill – yeah right!!

  • 304 Tsunki // Jul 18, 2012 at 6:04 PM

Ok so we wouldnt touch andy with a barge pole. Its all hypothetical anyway but think for a moment.
We sign Carroll for 15m, make him drop to 40k a week wages. Thats 20m generated from a loan in which we have come up with a magical stopgap on a free, plus time to get a no. 9 replacement, also magical.

On the strength of a season in a lousy team run lousily, you say our former golden boy is worthless forever. Hmmmm.

Fast forward in this parallel universe to a bright day at stadium of sh*** and andy turns cattermole on his ass, using his chest as a spring board, he volleys straight through the abdomen of the mackem goalie to take him and ballinto the stands via the net in extra time to grab the winner. Let me hear you now Mr. 40%.

You cant tell me nearly half the NUFC support will boo him in a black and white shirt. Be realistic people. There are no dead cert successes in the bargain category.

  • 305 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 18, 2012 at 6:06 PM

“The way it was intended to be played”…?

Oh I’m sorry Matty, were you present when football was invented?

So how do you claim to know what style represents how football was “intended to be played”

4-4-2 was the go to formation for decades. Surely that was the way football was “intended to be played” but that is just my opinion of course. I would never be as daft as to claim to know how the game was “intended to be played”.

I am emphasising that phrase because you annoy me.

  • 306 mattyNUFC // Jul 18, 2012 at 6:08 PM

saying ‘quite a british/irish style’ is just a deluded way of saying like crap. let’s face it. a lot of games last season we were out possessed by astronomical margins. we had a frequent difficult in keeping hold of the ball and stringing together passes. we started playing better towards the tail end of the season and that’s when we were finally getting into our groove….we were playing great passing football in a suitable formation.

It’s just as naive to think that playing Carroll up front means a team have to play like Stoke.

And it’s irrelevant of what ‘we’ want – that’s Pardew’s style, and that’s how we’ve played for the last year and a half.

You seem to have missed the point Carroll in all but his last season for Newcastle was a developing player from the reserve team, while Ba is a full blown international, in his primem who will not improve substantially because at 27 he will have reached his full potential.

Andy Carroll is 23 and has not had an extended run in any PL first team other than 2010-2011 where his goal average was 65% therefore you have to consider that as a true figure because prior to that he did not start for the first team.

Carroll has never had a 13 game goal drought in what is a much improved team. He also hold the ball up better than Ba, tracks back and is very good in defence when backs are against the wall.

Ask yourself why Pardew rates him so highly and also why the club are interested in bringing him back. You also need to look at the Euro’s and Englands performances with him in the team and without. With Carroll in the team we looked far more dangerous and he rattled defences with his physical presence and ariel ability.

Martin Keown hated playing against Shearer because of his physical presence, Carroll is exactly the same.

I honestly think that Carroll combined with Cabaye, HBA and Cisse will see Newcastle playing at a different level.

It would be good if we could keep Ba however he has yet to commit to the club despite Pardews efforts to tie him down.

Reading inbetween the lines Ba is considering his options waiting for a team to activate his release clause. Once that happens he will go to the highest bidder who will pay whatever salary his agent negotiates as part of the package.

I honestly think it’s just a matter of time before Ba goes and the board are doing everything possible to ensure that if it does happen we have a quality forward to step in as a replacement.

  • 312 Tsunki // Jul 18, 2012 at 6:11 PM

Actually if you go back far enough you might find football was intended to be played by a rabble of oafs from warring villages who start braying each other to get hold of a bladder full of rags and end up at midnight three days later booting someones head into a stream.

that’s like saying painting was never intended to be beautiful, artistic. it was there but to tell some neolithic story, and nothing else. standardization shifts with evolution, meaning and intention as well.

is there truly any other way to play the game? it is accepted as ‘the right way’ because it coincides with the world’s perception of the ‘beautiful game’, and barca and spain over the past few years have redefined that for most of us.

but of course this is just you trolling to look for an argument. nothing out of the norm.

That is absolute shit. I’ve never read such a pretentious, pseudo intellectual post on here.

Swansea were absolutely dreadful for long periods of the season, despite playing ‘the right way’.

Strangely enough, Arsenal don’t seem to have done too well playing football ‘the right way’ either, do they now?

Barcelona have the luxury of being £400m in debt, and still able to spend more, buying whoever they want, whenever they want.

We, do not. I’ll take effective football over playing ‘the right way’ into mid table any day.

Tads – im not on a 1 man mission mate. In fact polls have shown 60%+ of NUFC fans want him back. And contrary to popular belief AC in better at more then just headers…and its not because i say so…its because pros in the industry say so. And remember…he was good for us when he was here while surrounded by lesser players then we have now.

And while i do like tall and strong strikers who are good in the air i wouldnt take AC if i had my choice, not on 16mil anyways. I would rather have a player like Toivonen(who we were linked to a few weeks ago) that is an equal thread in the air, has better pace, better passing, better dribbling and can play behind the striker to cover for Cabaye…and he’s 5-6mil on top of that. But since Carroll is just 23 and can still develop and learn a lot i’m going with the flow… we seem more likely to sign him anyway.

    Ruddy…Stop trolling :)

On the topic of style of football. There clearly isn’t a right or wrong way. It’s a sport with the objective of beating the other team. We’ve seen it done many ways so what’s the disagreement here?

Sure, Spain / Barca have got the passing game down to a fine art, there is no disputing that, but they are beatable. Surely a mixture of styles / tactics is the way forward? Nothing worse for me than predictable football, which ever style is it. Probably why I support the toon….can’t say they’re predictable like ;)

I wonder how PSG are going to get on with “hoofball” next season now they have their new big target man? :)

You said it better than I ever could. It seems that Matty is on a crusade and has been ousted as being incredibly wrong.

The demand from NUFC fans has shifted from “getting bums off seats” to “getting points on the board” which as far as I was concerned was the main objective and should have been from the get go.

I don’t care if my team entertain me, or excite me, it’s a cherry on top if they do just as long as they get the job done.

Last season our boys got the job done, largely through playing an adaptable 4-4-2 system. AC would give us more options to allow us to adapt even more.

There are umpteen players that have come to our club that I have downright despised and detested but always cheered them on, willing them to do their best. Owen is an example of that, Bramble, Boumsong are other examples. Just because they might be cack does not give us the right to slate them.

Btw will people stop comparing Ba and Carroll? He will not be replacing him so just give it a rest.

  • 341 Oldgit1 // Jul 18, 2012 at 6:38 PM

I have no doubts that one/two of our players will leave but I dont think it will be Ba mainly due to his potential knee problem that will prevent him passing a medical and he always seems to include a clause in his contract.

Im surprised we havnt had any real offers for tiote or cisse but I feel these are the two players we will lose, hence the reason we are thinking of Anita and Carrol, I believe these players to be at risk.
Getting back to this thread I dont think it is a bad thing to have simmo stay and believe that there is a new contract for him to sign, it would be worth it to upset some of the so called bloggers who are anti simmo.

The evening chronicle states in their poll that 78% of geordies want Carrol to come back so the 22% who dont want him back, are this site bloggers, as I have only seen a few comments of supporting carrols return. Strange that.

@ruddy im glad you brought up Owen.
For me the only problems with him was his injury record and his refusal to stay post relegation.
Owen was the wrong type of player to sign with the squad we had at the time. I noticed in many games his vision and runs were miles ahead of our team who failed to spot him in acres of space many many times. Had he had better service i daresay he could have doubled his worth to the team through goals/assists.
As my workmate so eloquently put it Owen was the cherry when we hadn’t finished baking the cake.
I saw a similar situation with loverman in our championship season. They were a similar type of player.

I noticed that 9 just popped in to say that Ba and Tiote won’t be NUFC players next season and had nothing to back it up…we’re waiting for an answer 9, please don’t leave us hanging in suspense…

I will admit that when we signed Owen he probably wasn’t helped by the fact that he didn’t have the right standard of player to put balls in to his feet or have players feed off him but that is besides the point. He fleeced us for over 100k a week, was never fit and to cap it all off he was worse than dreadful in our relegation season, the man couldn’t even score 1 on 1s, I remember him missing a host of chances against Spurs, Portsmouth, and Fulham in the latter stages of that season, a single goal against Portsmouth in that 0-0 draw at home and we would have stayed up.

So I don’t think he was a great player, intelligent player or even a decent player for us. The man was crap, and has been crap ever since he left Liverpool many moons ago. My utter hatred and contempt for the man knows no bounds, and I don’t even wish to contemplate any sort of comparison with Lovenkrands who I thought was a great asset to the team especially in the Championship season and a true gent to boot.

  • 382 ToonDownSouth // Jul 18, 2012 at 7:17 PM

I’d like him back, but I do worry about what that sort of fee could be used for instead – not just in terms of transfers, but the infastructure of the club, or maybe keeping Yohan, Cheik, Santon, Hatem etc here a year or two longer.

If he was at a reasonable fee, I’d absolutely love him back, yeah. Like you say, we’re not accountants, and I’m aware Ashley’s not going to throw money down the drain. It just seems a big fee for us.

    Gateshead Mag,
I hear what your saying but Holliett is a proven Premiership player Marveaux is looking like he could be permantly broken, and tbh we need a much bigger squad for the amount of games,to get someone like Holliett on a free(almost) would imo be a great buy.

I think the main reason we dont carry much aerial threat is because of poor delivery need some of our corners were poor as were some of out free kicks and crossing
I think the main thing we miss from the AC days is actually nolans little 3-4 yard goals we need some1 in there on those loose balls from set pieces hopefully cabs can add that to his game and ffs some trach him the chicken dance celebration!!

  • 428 XtraTimeAndPens // Jul 18, 2012 at 7:53 PM

Our delivery from corners and free kicks was pretty variable last season i thought. Sometimes it was great, sometimes it was downright poor. I think ToonArmyDownSouth is right that it’s Nolan getting onto little knock downs and searching for scraps in the box that we miss the most. After all he scored 13 goals or something playing from midfield. Think Coloccini should probably be scoring more goals from centre back given that he’s up for all the set pieces. He didn’t score in the league last season. Maybe that’s something for him to work on in pre-season. Saying that, he can’t be perfect.

Someone posted earlier that Simmo will be going nowhere until a replacement is found,if my phone hadn’t of died I was going to strongly point out that on the contrary the way the club has done business over the last year and a half we seem to insist that the player leaves first before bringing somebody to take his place.

  • 435 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 18, 2012 at 7:57 PM

  • 436 Valci // Jul 18, 2012 at 7:58 PM

davis – zlatan is 30 though…only got a couple more years in him…if he was younger i bet it would easily have been 30+mil…probably towards the 50 mark. Also, im not sure it was 20mil…last i heard on the news it was 62mil for him and silva(the defender)…imho silva was cheaper as he is a defender so that would put zlatan n more then 20mil.

    Rodgers on Carroll…

“There has been a lot written and spoken about him but first and foremost Andy is a Liverpool player.

“To consider a loan period for someone the club spent £35million on isn’t something we’re looking to do at this moment in time.

“Andy will be the same as every other player – if there’s ever an offer that comes in we’d look at it as a club and see if it’s going to be worthwhile for the club and the team as a whole.

“The club invested £35million in him. People talk about whether he can fit into my style or not, but if you’re a club and you spend £35million on a player you’d like to think he can fit into whatever style the team plays.

“He’s a good player. He’ll join the rest of the group next week and we’ll take it from there.”

Sorry been away since my last post just catching up and saw TADS reply @317 to my statement about AC.

What are you on, son? how am I arrogant because I stated a couple of home truths? Have I offended you in some way? Have I directed derision at you? I really hope nobody ever mistakes the sensible TDS and TDSarf with you because you are a right prat. Nothing you said made any sense at all, except you obviously have a bug up your ass about me.

Also insurance for if demba ba’s knee goes its alays a risk hence love the guy but in the grander scheme of things if he has to go so be it. Pardew knows what he’s doing.

  • 496 t00ntime // Jul 18, 2012 at 9:01 PM

Lol the postions people where playing during the pre season games makes no difrence…

AP said the first few games are about getting fitness back, not the result

Why did vuckic play LM is he leaving too?

    Simmo wont leave this window,
    A) AP will want him so debuchy can slowly come in to the team (like with santon) instead of throwing him straight in
    B) he wont through up a chance in europe, if u ask me simmo is waiting to see how much playing time he gets if we sign a RB, if he barely gets any subs/cup games he will probably leave if he gets some time he will stay.

Thats what i think about ‘simmo leaving’ rumour and if he is doing B, fair play to the lad its the right thing to do

  • 497 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 18, 2012 at 9:02 PM

Tsunki maybe i worded it wrong but to state ppl who are opposed to seeing AC come back would boo him is a very close minded view and waa simply asking if that meant you had never cheered a player you didnt want/didnt like at the club dont think thats a hone truth stating 40% of the fans would boo him the fans turn up to support the team not the individuals so no fella no bug up my ass

  • 498 Valci // Jul 18, 2012 at 9:02 PM

tads – yeah thats what im saying. He could provide cover for the Dembas as well as Cabaye and has a goalscoring record around 1 every 2 games over the last 3 years. At 7mil euros (roughly 5.5mil pounds) id say its a good deal.

Just a thought but if Pards is converting Obertan into a striker in the Henry mould then why do we need Carroll at all ?
I still think this might just be a spoiler (for all the cunning reasons posted on here). Screw Brendan before he gets started. We don’t negotiate publicly so if we are no there is a reason.

  • 507 Taking the Papiss // Jul 18, 2012 at 9:14 PM

Looks like Carroll may not come back now. That’s fine by me and it’s time to move to other targets. Gameiro may be an option. I really want to finish off the Debuchy, Anita and Douglas transfers (even if it needs to go through at end of August). That will give us the depth needed. I would, in an ideal world prefer a winger to a striker, or at least a striker that can play out wide

Bloody hell. Brendan says Carroll’s not available for loan in a statement clearly very carefully worded by a PR man, and everyone decides it’s not going to happen now.

Rodgers is hardly going to say “We are actively looking to get rid of this greasy lump of a #9″.

Admittedly, I doubt that it’ll ever get to the point where we’re effectively blacklisted from the transfer market by other clubs, but it is a concern in the long run.

The money we sold Carroll for we could could potentially have used that for:
    Cabaye -£5.5mil
    Santi – £5mil
    Ba – Free
    Cisse – £8mil
    Bigi – £1mil

It’s a hard call as he’ll need to play more like Madrid than Barca.

  • 564 ~Debuchery on a Dreamboat~ // Jul 19, 2012 at 7:08 AM

If Newcastle are truely after a young english forward, then I think Agbonlahor would be a better buy. Still only 25, can play in a central role or out on the wings and he has a lot of pace. I reckon he would cost us around the same (if not less then) the reported 15-20mill for Judas.

This price guess is also based on the amount they sold downing and Young for.

  • 565 ~Debuchery on a Dreamboat~ // Jul 19, 2012 at 7:09 AM

well not really young… but younger then Cisse and Ba… lol.

  • 566 Beattie25 // Jul 19, 2012 at 7:15 AM

Reading the latest press release from Brendan Rodgers regarding Carroll does anyone else get the impression that he hasn’t handles it well at all and that he is in for a shock when it comes to managing a team with huge expectations?

I’ve got a sneaking suspicion Liverfool may really struggle this season.

Back to other news ive been working out and I’ve lost 3lbs.

  • 567 Valci // Jul 19, 2012 at 7:25 AM

Beattie – im sure L’pool’s PR people slapped Rodgers a bit after his former statements regarding AC. I’m also quite certain that his statement in this latest press release was written by those same PR people. He mentioned AC’s 35mil pricetag 3-4 times… almost once per sentence. This is L’pool trying to justify their asking price for AC…cause Rodgers made it abundantly clear (even in this last statement) that he will look at the offer coming in for AC – which basically means they want to sell… it’s all about bringing the price up with marketing crap at the moment.

  • 568 Spuggy // Jul 19, 2012 at 7:45 AM

I don’t think we were ever in to buy Carroll we just wanted to loan him on the cheap and why not. I don’t think we would buy him in a million years unless it was for £10m. There’s no way Liverpool would sell for anything less than £20 imo

  • 569 geordiejamie89 // Jul 19, 2012 at 8:15 PM

It will be a shame for Danny to leave. He’s a top right-back, and he’s made some great stops off the line. And it’s a bargain for Reading or whoever does manage to pick him up for as little as two million. However I’m still hopeful he’ll sign a new contract.
