The transfer saga with FC Twente center-back Douglas has been going on a long time, and last week there were reports that Newcastle had agreed a fee of £5M for the Brazilian and news on Tuesday night that Newcastle had offered €4M (about £3.14) for the player.
Douglas – FC Twente want £5M for the player
The news is that the Newcastle Board have been in regular contact with Twente about the player and almost three weeks ago Derek Llambias and Secretary Lee Charnley made a weekend trip to Enschede to tie up the deals for Luuk de Jong and Douglas.
That was not successful and De Jong signed for Boruaaia Monchengladbach, try saying that quickly after a couple of pints, and it seems Newcastle may be in danger of losing out on their second FC Twente target.
Douglas is out of contract next summer, so in truth that seems a reasonable bid for the player, but certainly Newcastle are not as far along in getting the 6’4″ Brazilian to Newcastle, as earlier reports would have us believe.
The fee for Luuk de Jong is thought to have been only £10M – plus some add-ons – so Newcastle certainly lost out on the 21 year-old Dutch striker, but he didn’t want to come to Newcastle – so there’s not much the Newcastle Board could do about that.
Fulham and West Ham are suspected of also being interested in Douglas, but Newcastle will continue their hard bargaining of recent years, although we have had no success this summer so far, but we’ve also known for Newcastle to wait, if they cannot get good deals.
That was true last summer when we didn’t sign a striker to replace Andy Carroll, even though they tried to get Modibo Maiga from Sochaux, but he signed for West Ham this week for an undisclosed fee – probably around £5M.
Maiga failed a fitness test last December at Newcastle, but the Magpies must have known about a certain Papiss Cisse becoming available around about that time.
Newcastle ended up just fine with that deal, when we got Papiss Cisse to Tyneside rather than Maiga, and of course Papiss was a star of the Premier League with 13 goals in his first 14 appearances for the Magpies, in that famous number 9 shirt.
There may not be any news on Douglas signing for Newcastle for a while, and we just hope it’s not a second time unlucky with FC Twente this summer.
