Alan Pardew – We Should Have Won – We Switched Off

11:30 am, Sunday, July 22nd, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 199 Comments

The Newcastle squad is now back in Newcastle after taking a chartered flight back home from Austria after the 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce in Vienna, in which a lot of Newcastle players gave a good account of themselves.

Alan Pardew – we thought we were cruising – we switched off

Newcastle played very well last night and after a very good goal from 19 year-old Mehdi Abeid had put Newcastle ahead after 76 minutes, we conceded a goal with almost the last kick of the match, and that’s always very hard to take – even in a friendly game.

And after going ahead Newcastle must have had three good chances to go 2-0 up, with Shola And Cisse missing some decent chances that they didn’t take, but Alan Pardew thinks it’s a valuable lesson that our players can learn, as he had this to say today to the Sunday Sun today:

“It was a game we should have won.” “There’s no doubt about that.” “It shows at this level that you can’t switch off.” “They are a Champions League team and that’s what we did, switched off.”

“We thought we were cruising and should have scored a second goal.” “It didn’t come.” “You need to see the game out with tenacity.” “We didn’t and they scored and it showed what it’s like.”

“This could be a valuable lesson for us.”

Alan’s so right that it’s a valuable lesson to learn, and it’s one of the worst things that can happen in the league, when we are winning late in the game, and the oppostion equalizes - and that 2 points dropped right there – and it’s like a kick in the gut – or even worse. :D

But still, there were some very good performances from our players last night, so we are not going to grumble.

Comments welcome.

Good for these things to happen preseason. Hopefully it’ll tighten the bolts

  • 3 ~Debuchery on a Dreamboat~ // Jul 22, 2012 at 11:39 AM

Gosling also came close with a header in the first half.
Vuckic should have taken a shot rather then passing it. Game could have easily ended 2-1 or 3-1 in our favor. Don’t really remember Elliot making that many saves. Most of the fenerbache shots sailed over. That schtoke? no idea how you spell his name. (The short lad with a lot of face down the left) looked rather impressive for fenerbache.

    pace* not face

If we are going to play a 433 next season i agree Adam Johnson is a good season although we have Marveux.

However i dont think we are playing 433 as all of Pardews comments are that Demba Ba will play in a central role which means either: 442 or Cisse not playin/leaving.
The fact we after Carroll would also suggest we playing with 2 up front very much like we did against Manure at home .

    90% of games !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • 6 ashwin say's // Jul 22, 2012 at 11:48 AM

its not the first time ,we ate goal in last minute 4 to 5 times last season
    eg. arsenal (it hurts)
    I ain’t speaking more

  • 7 bambams // Jul 22, 2012 at 11:51 AM

Vuckic has to start stepping up to the plate, I thought he was going to become a worldy but he does not look interested at times. New midfielders signed tends to suggest the management ‘may’ have concerns

  • 8 jakesome // Jul 22, 2012 at 11:53 AM

pards says that 90% of the games Ba plays he will be down the center not that Ba will play 90% of our games

  • 9 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 11:53 AM

on the match yesterday thought gosling, tavernier were brilliant n the rest of the youngsters were great to, weve clearly been working on keeping the ball better
i think were 3 first teamers n a few more quality youngsters away from a top squad

  • 10 Oldgit1 // Jul 22, 2012 at 11:54 AM

AP has very high standards even in friendlies, Thats why he is a top top manager.

  • 11 Benton Toon Exile // Jul 22, 2012 at 11:54 AM

Did everyone watch a different game to me.

I though Fenerbache were the better side apart from maybe 15mins in the second half during which we scored.

They passed the ball better and looked most likely to win, so I thought we did well the get a draw.

  • 12 ToonAndy // Jul 22, 2012 at 11:56 AM

In that case I would like to see….

And if cisse has any trouble then bring on the big obertan to show him some passing accuracy and finishing talent!! …………..

  • 13 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 11:56 AM

thought it was a very even game n we looked comfortable

  • 14 Hemel Mag // Jul 22, 2012 at 11:56 AM

Just to liven things up-Remy anyone??

  • 15 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:00 PM

if we got remy we would have 3 of the best strikers in the league no 11 shirt spare which he wears alot

  • 16 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:02 PM

they value remy at 18m euro which is around 14mill he would b worth every penny of it

  • 17 Byker Boy // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:02 PM

Not totally convinced Elliot is good enough, it may be a bit early to write him off; but serious consideration and judgement should be made to his all round capability.

  • 18 outsidethebox // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:02 PM

from previous post thought gosling had his best game and could even be in mix with marveaux for first team after watching game last night and pardieus comments
imagine the euro team could look like
simpson (if debouchy signs) tav williamson rtaylor
    amafitano bigi abeid vukic
    sammy and shola …

  • 19 Nufc-83 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:04 PM

I would say over the whole game fenerbache were the better side. We had a good spell during the 2nd half but they had a strong side out and are more advanced in terms of pre season preparation. Overall pleasing performance with a lot of positives.

  • 20 SupaToonKid // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:06 PM

Remy is the guy we should sign! Worth €18M & like davybtoon said: Remy, Cissé & Ba we’d be challenging for the title with that strike force & then CB & FB needed (maybe another CM) and we’d be getting top 4 no problems!

  • 21 Toon1978 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:08 PM

I disagree mate. I think we started off well and Fenerbache slowly got into the game and started knocking the ball about very well but with very little effect. We need to remember we had a very young team playing a team that will be playing CL Football. We played really well and matched them all the way. Tavernier and Sammy where outstanding last night.

  • 22 Nufc-83 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:13 PM

Toon1978 i agree about the found side that’s why the performance was so pleasing against a fenerbache side who were strong as i said before i just think they were the better side over the whole 90 mins but again No shame in that with side we had out.

  • 23 Ben Arfa (Either love him or Hatem) // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:15 PM

Sorry if it’s already been mentioned, but according to le10sport, we’ve contacted Marseille over a potential move for Remy – they only want £14m which we could get down.

  • 24 Nufc-83 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:15 PM

  • 25 Nufc-83 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:17 PM

If we get remy i will go nuts tbh.

  • 26 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:17 PM

i jus think pardew is making us a team that is very hard to beat, fenerbache are a very good team n we played well against them, and the youngsters plus gosling n marveux is like having 7/8 new players

  • 27 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:18 PM

ben arfa agree we could get remy for less than what there asking i reckon maybe between 12m n 13mill would get him

  • 28 Ben Arfa (Either love him or Hatem) // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:18 PM

    I reckon we’ll get Remy.
    Why? @cwarr07: Loic Remy #notachance #NUFC

  • 29 Nufc-83 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:20 PM

I actually agree with cwarr on this one. Would love it to happen but really can’t see it happening.

  • 30 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:22 PM

cwarr07 only saying that bcoz hes convinced carroll is a done deal so looks like were getting remy haha

  • 31 geordie157 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:23 PM

Seems unlikely, but Remy on the right of a front 3 with Cisse or Ba and Ben Arfa, sounds very good.

  • 32 Toon1978 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:26 PM

Wish Ashley would just go for it and get in Carroll or Remy lol. Having said that, we are in need of a full back and CB also. Things moving at a snails pace in regards to transfers :(

  • 33 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:29 PM

see pardew saying he sees tav as a cb he was superb yesterday there

  • 34 Nufc-83 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:32 PM

Madness because at his size and with his pace he seems a natural rb.

  • 35 MagpiesFlyHigh // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:33 PM

Didn’t see the game…do you reckon Tav could be 3rd pick CB by the end of next season ?

  • 36 Offkey // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:33 PM

Elliott had nothing to do all game, except the last minute. For that reason alone I cant say they played better than us.

Include the fact we had a load of youngsters on, key first team players missing, made many changes and they are further along there pre-season, what we did was more than credible.

IMO we were better and deserved the victory.

  • 37 Ben Arfa (Either love him or Hatem) // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:33 PM

Down the left you mean? Ben Arfa is a right winger.

  • 38 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:34 PM

not really can see were he is coming from he has pace, hes strong comfortable on the ball n has great leap

  • 39 Toon1978 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:36 PM

Tavernier also has good vision. If he carries on playing the way he has then there in no reason why he can’t be playing first team Football this coming season.

  • 40 MagpiesFlyHigh // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:40 PM

So it looks like Tav cud be RB plus cover for CB and be pretty good playing out of defence.
Good vision means good distribution = no hoofball.

  • 41 Nufc-83 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:41 PM

Just because Elliot had not much to do doesn’t mean they didn’t have good chances they should have at least hit the target 3 times in the first half and the rest of what you said is exactly what i said and the reason i am pleased with the performance .

  • 42 Nufc-83 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:43 PM

Loving tav by the way can see him making huge impact this season.

  • 43 ToonAndy // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:44 PM

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Remy… But could anyone tell me why his goal record isn’t very good at all??

  • 44 Dannyo // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:49 PM

Tried to mention that earlier, AP said it in his post interview. Singled him out as top performer too.
I reckon he’s an option for CB, but if i was gonna guess i think he’ll still get most of his games for RB.
Tavernier himself says he enjoys the whole back 4.
He did very well tho, assured on the ball and as AP said he has allot of pace to make up for mistakes.
Will be a brilliant player for us imo.

  • 45 geordie157 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:49 PM

    @Ben Arfa

Prefer HBA on the right, but he has no problem playing on the left. If Remy can play on the left of the three problem solved, right lets sign him and then get Debuchy and Sakho.

  • 46 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:50 PM

toonandy when ive seen him play he is usually on the right or left of a front 3 so maybe thats why n he has had a few injuries over the years

  • 47 oh1702 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:51 PM

    Debuchy 6m
    Douglas 5m
    Remy (I wish) 14m
    Bigi 1m
    Amalfitlano Free
    Total 26m

    Simpson 3m
    Forster 2m
    Best 2m
    Smith Free
    Guthrie Free

What a great transfer window that would be. With a net spend of 19m, we would of added some real quality. Gameiro instead of Remy could save us 8m bringing the net spend to 11m.

  • 48 dave 1961 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:53 PM

I have a right dilemma i have to go into hospital for major spinal surgery 10 days before the start of the season, if all goes well they think i will be in hospital 7-10 days, i had tried to get them to do it as a day case, but they explained that no one in the world had ever had it done as a day case, and their was probably a reason why. they did say they might let me out the next day, but I’m not sure that it was not an attempt at sarcasm. i do intend to take the season tickets into hospital with me to make sure my brother collects me (if i don’t get out in time). I’m not sure how long i could do off from hospital without being noticed, but i was watching an old carry on film where a visitor exchanged places with the patient. unfortunately its the first of 3 operations so i cant tell them to bog off or it could be what they tell me. i need a plan so i can get away without being noticed. missing the games not an option.

  • 49 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:53 PM

@dannyo agree tav gonna b a big player for us n i was delighted when he signed his new deal, my biggest plus this pre season has to b the youngsters comin through they no longer look like youngsters they look like first teamers which is a huge plus considering we hav a crop of about 6/7 coming through

  • 50 Offkey // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:53 PM

Swansea look good with no end product either, I dont feel that means they are the better team in games. The only reason Fenebache scored was due to a lapse in concentration. We had much clearer chances as well as, in my view, more control of the game than them.

  • 51 geordie157 // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:53 PM

I can see Vuckic going out on loan, the injuries to seem to have hampered his progress and knocked his confidence.

  • 52 Offkey // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:53 PM

    either = as well

  • 53 ashwin say's // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:54 PM

    debuchy,affeley,corgnet and gameiro
that will make us perfect recipe for top 4.
jordon rhodes, alderwerield and erik pieters will add to flavor.

    anyone thinks alike….

  • 54 JackButler // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:54 PM

Yesterday was a good work out on a heavy pitch, yes we should have held on for the win but the youngster held their own and are poised to give Pardew a selection headache this season :)

  • 55 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 12:59 PM

i wouldnt loan any of the young lads who hav been on this tour there all first teamers for me, inman maybe moyo if he cant catch the eye need a loan those type of players

  • 56 Offkey // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:00 PM

Also, am I right in thinking Ramadan started on Friday for our Muslim lads.

  • 57 Dannyo // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:01 PM

Tav, Sammy, Abeid, u can see they’ve all matured allot since last pre-season.
Vuckic will probably need to go out on loan is my guess. Altho i do fear we might go a bit short in midfield if injury hits. signing an fb and a cb must be prio tho.

  • 58 Nufc-83 // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:01 PM

Offkey when swansea played us they were limited to 30 yd shots fenerbache had 3 chances in the first half that they should have at least made Elliot pull of a good save. Anyway its making me sound like i am not happy with the performance when it is the opposite.

  • 59 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:05 PM

@dannyo would like to see us sign curtis good n anthony koura as they would to the likes of abeid n that, for me vukic is ready he jus played poor yesterday it happens
n of course we need a first team rb n cb n id love anita n remy

  • 60 Offkey // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:05 PM

More than happy to agree that the performance was good, will have to agree to disagree on the other matter. :)

  • 61 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:08 PM

honestly thought we were comfortable yesterday n contained fenerbache who had a strong side out

  • 62 Nufc-83 // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:08 PM

Haha ye mate. Really looking forward to seeing sammy develop, think he will cause a lot of problems for teams this season.

  • 63 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:08 PM

remember still got fergie to come back in aswell

  • 64 JackButler // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:11 PM

davy – agree mate, fenerbache play a champions league qualifier next week and are much further along in their pre season schedule, plus we have quit a few 1st team players to come into that starting 11 :)

  • 65 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:14 PM

Afternoon Gents. Only caught the last 5 minutes last night, so basically I blame myself for the goal conceded and I send my apologies :)

From the highlights and comments it seems we gave them a good go and up until their goal, we seemed to be moving the ball round well and Tav looked really impressive (granted it was only a few minutes) :)

How’s everyone’s feelings towards whether our young players can take the step up this season? I think this is the year for a few of them and that has been Pardews plan all along.

  • 66 jesperfuglsang // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:19 PM

I wondered if Lille doesn’t want to sell us Debuchy, what about putting in a bid for Ajax’s Gregory van der Wiel; he is in his last year of his contract and rumors has it Ajax are looking to sell him!

My guess is he would probably cost the same as Debuchy anyway. Any thoughts?

  • 67 Dannyo // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:20 PM

Aye, we’ve sorely missed a proper striker prospect, hopefully the french fella will be the real deal.
I would’ve expected the Good deal to come off by now, must be something going on there.

Still lack 3 first teams for me aswell.

  • 68 jesperfuglsang // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:21 PM

Apology accepted ;) don’t let it happen again!

  • 69 Spuggy // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:21 PM

We are stating to see a core of quality reserve players emerging and it’s really exciting.

Fergy, Sammy, Vuckic, Abeid, Tav, Bigi, Fitano and Koura (if signs) are all very decent players and at their age can only improve.

  • 70 @timuJ // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:21 PM

  • 72 JackButler // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:22 PM

    For me :-

Sammy will have a big part to play this season (would have broke through last season but for his injury).
Biggi looks a very good understudy for Tiote
Tav looks class for one so young
Abied is very assured and has a massive future with us.
Gosling is a very good player, still young and needs to stay injury free to realise his potential.
Vukic, looks lost at times, as though he doesn’t know his best position

  • 73 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:23 PM

Ibizatoon tav was brilliant yesterday n I think ya right think its been pardews plan all along to bring in sammi, abeid, Vukic, tav, fergie n biggie this season n if we get Curtis good u can throw him into that group with maybe streete n a few others if they can impress, I feel if streete was fit we would hav seen him in the team this pre season

  • 74 jesperfuglsang // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:24 PM

It is definitely make or break it for a few of them, and a few others has the change to show AP they can cut it. I still believe one or two of them might have to go out on loan for half or maybe a whole season to a Championship team.

Vuckic is one of my worries :( though I really rate him highly.

  • 75 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:27 PM

Jack all those u mentioned will b in n around the first team I still think a few more youngsters will b signed who can challenge with these players

  • 76 toonLYF // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:28 PM

if anyone wants to watch Benfica V PSV, should be a good game, look out for Axel Witsel!

  • 77 davybtoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:29 PM

I really don’t get why ppl are worried about Vukic he’s ready n doesn’t need a loan IMO should b converted to a striker

  • 78 JackButler // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:30 PM

Davy – Plus we have Streete lurking in the background :)
The only two that worry me are Vukic and Obertan, though Vukic is only 19 so he has plenty of time, but Obertan looks like a 100m sprinter with football boots on :(

  • 79 seantoon // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:33 PM

ToonLYF we can all watch and admire but he’s way out of our price range unfortunately

  • 80 Kris // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:36 PM

Gosling had a decent game yesterday! Colo and Tioté was good as always. And i liked the performance of the likes of Tavernier, Sammy and Mehdi (althought Abeid didnt play to much). But I agree with the @11 post. I think Fenerbache was at least as good.

I think Obertan will becoming good.. But he disappointened me a lot yesterday.

  • 81 Offkey // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:42 PM

I just think Obertan needs to hold the ball more. Opposite issue to HBA, he needs to show us what HE can do and not be so ready to play the easy ball.

  • 82 Offkey // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:44 PM

For me it all bodes well for a break through season for a few of them.

    1. Tav looked composed and in my opinion helped us dictate the game with Collo, Tiote and Gosling.

2, Sameobi, looked composed, showed some notable skill, created opportunities and ran at the defence.

    3. Gosling looked good apart from first 15 minutes, different to our other CM’s and gives us a different option, proper box to box cm.

    4. Abeid, good goal and sound contribution. Certainly think there is more to come from him going on reserve games. Disappeared a bit after the goal imo, but ready for some games.

5.Bigi, did well, played a bit too deep for me. Seemed ready for games though.

    6. Vuckic, hopefully just a poor game for the lad, couple of bad decisions and got caught a bit. Didn’t look ready. Think he should of been put on later with Abeid as they seem to link up well in reserves.

  • 83 toonLYF // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:44 PM

i did watch the match yesterday…and i’m failing to see why Gosling is getting praised? anyone?

  • 84 toonLYF // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:45 PM

even read someone say he’s close to first team on here earlier…c’mon he’s not even half the player of Cheick or Yohan

  • 85 Nufc-83 // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:49 PM

I am goslings biggest critic but for about 25 mins he showed he can actually play a bit of football with some neat passing. Add that to his Kevin nolan type of ghosting into the box unmarked attribute he could may yet prove useful. Can’t believe i just said that.

  • 86 JackButler // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:50 PM

Gosling will be a good squad player for us, with 4 trophies to fight for, injuries and suspensions playing a part we need players like him, even more so now that we have lost Guthrie. Tiote will pick up his customary 11/12 yellow cards, plus he’s away at the ACoN in January.

We are desperately short up front as both Cisse and Ba will be missing for a month or so as well

  • 87 jesperfuglsang // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:52 PM

Gosling showed there was a lot more to come from him; there was glimses of the Gosling everyone at Everton was praising and I think he was our MOTM.

He just need continuity and some confidence. I think he’ll come good for us if stays clear of injuries.

  • 88 Offkey // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:54 PM

    @83 and 84
Agreed, he is not as good as them but he is also a different type of player. Cabaye sprays balls and harries, Tiote kill opposition play and Gosling tries to get in both boxes to score and help defend.

IMO, after the first 15 minutes we started to control the game. The full backs were not great and nor were the wings, so what did it was Collo, Tav, Gosling and Tiote. Gosling was buzzing round, making space, was always ready to receive the ball once in space he played a decent pass.

  • 89 Nufc-83 // Jul 22, 2012 at 1:54 PM

  • 94 RobertLeeNo.7 // Jul 22, 2012 at 2:05 PM

Also I think Gosling had a good game yesterday I think once he gets in his stride he will be a decent player for us.

Abeid looks good but gets caught the wrong side of his man to much and gets left stranded and the defence exposed I don’t think he’s ready for the EPL this season.

Bigi looked quality and ahead of abeid he covered the defence well and picked out some great long range pin point passes I think this kid will surpass Tiote in a few years.

Tav was absolutely faultless and didn’t realise the pace he had.

    Futures bright!

  • 95 rknufc // Jul 22, 2012 at 2:13 PM

just to make sure, do you pronounce tavernier tav-er-knee-er

  • 96 toonLYF // Jul 22, 2012 at 2:14 PM

i just think at the age of 22, as a centre midfielder (no matter what style of play) he should be showing mandatory skills such as composure, confidence in possesion and the ability to pick passes comfortably and consistently, he hasn’t showed me any of those things.

  • 97 toonLYF // Jul 22, 2012 at 2:19 PM

for example i believe Bigirimana is already showing them things ^

  • 98 RobertLeeNo.7 // Jul 22, 2012 at 2:19 PM

LYF you talking about Gosling ? he has suffered some serious injuries for a player so young and finding there feet at big clubs he is but human and that is gonna knock your confidence.

I think Gosling will be fine he shows a lot more promise than Obertan on the pitch.

Gos gets in some good positions to and I thought he looked comfortable on the ball yesterday a little all over the place when off it but its pre season thats normal.

  • 99 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 22, 2012 at 2:19 PM

I hope a club tries to loan Vuckic. Right now he seem to have stalled in his development. Should get a run out in a Championship club. Am sure he will be a very good player there to help him regain his confidence.

  • 100 toonLYF // Jul 22, 2012 at 2:23 PM

fair point RobertLee but i will continue to hold fire on praising him as much as some others have on here, until he produces in the first team consistently in competitive matches, i’d go as far as having Abeid ahead of him based on what i’ve seen on the pitch, but i know Gos does deserve his chance he has been unlucky with injuries

  • 101 RobertLeeNo.7 // Jul 22, 2012 at 2:23 PM

agreed Vukic needs some playing time he looked light years behind the others in terms of sharpness yesterday

  • 102 Bloomin Marveaux-lous // Jul 22, 2012 at 2:27 PM

I think some of you are being a little harsh on Vuckic.

Your not taking into account any number of possibilities that could’ve affected his performance. Firstly he was being played out of position which is certainly a disorientating thing in football also we have to ask our selves how much the amalfitano injury affected the tactics shortly before kick off. The tines I have seen him play in the reserves and glimpses in the first team I must say the young man is really, really good.

He is coming back from injuries and lacking the fitness. it is only a matter of time before he shows his worth in my opinion. We are the harshest fans in the works at times and criticising players based on 1 or 2 Pre season performances is laughable. I remember you’se guys ripping Demba to pieces during Ramadan and then after Cisse signed. It only takes a few poor games for some of our fans to slate the players and whilst that will never change I do thinks it’s unfair to question a players future based on a misplaced pass or 2.

Take for example the mysterious case of Obertan. He’s already been written off by the majority of fans. If we gave him all the support we could, made him into a cult hero of epic proportions (Perch, Ameobi) and he still failed to show any form then yes get rid, but he hasn’t been given a chance by the majority whilst we the minority fight fir our own.

  • 103 Big Pappa Cisse // Jul 22, 2012 at 2:27 PM

I dont think we will get Caroll this transfer window to be honest like. I reckon it will either be in January or next summer after a year of sitting on the bench under Rogers. Also i think after losing out on Hoilett we should go for Adam Johnson, and in a few years time we could have 5 local lads in the starting line up

    Adam Johnson

  • 104 toonLYF // Jul 22, 2012 at 2:30 PM

Pappa i would be over the moon if we got Johnson, i would have prefered him over Hoilett anyway, Johnson is one of the best old fashioned/natural wingers in the league and a supporter of the toon, think we could get him in for 7m max on about 40-45k pw, WOULD LOVE THAT!

LYF – i didnt catch the PSV – Benfica stream from the get-go and quality isnt very good and since i dont undestand the language i didnt notice is Witsel was playing and if he was which position? … just hope its not on either of the wings…case both were poor. Only player i’d like from PSV is Toivonen which only costs 7mil euros (5.5mil pounds give or take) if reports are accurate and PSV are in need of cash…bargain at that price as he is quality.

  • 107 Big Pappa Cisse // Jul 22, 2012 at 2:42 PM

    @ toonLYF

Plus Ba and Cisse would have a field day with Ben Arfa and Johnson supplying them. Imagine this line up

Debuchy and Santon overlapping Ben Arfa and Johnson would be immense and that front 5 would terrorise any defense in the PL. We should play it cool with Caroll for now and get AJ this window.

LYF – thats a matter of opinion mate. He had a good tournament this week and didnt play all that bad today…to me it seemed he wanted to score so bad that he was always 1 step ahead of the pass. Wouldnt want to give a definite verdict on him but i’d like to see him in a squad with more value because i think he would benefit from it…he seems to be wasting away at PSV…at least thats my impression.
As a side note…i can respect your opinion but i disagree. I wonder how many people that hold Cisse in such high regard on this forum had even heard of Cisse of Freiburg before he came to us…think about it.

I am actually ok with the squad as it is. The problem is what happens with injuries etc. I’m sure you all know my feelings on Simmo, so I wouldn’t be too upset with him at RB, but would certainly prefer Dreamboat II to arrive.

Having seen the young lads get some time this pre-season, I really hope they get more playing time than last season.

  • 138 toonLYF // Jul 22, 2012 at 4:07 PM

Bayern fans are lucky, Shaqiri – probably the most direct and gifted player i’ve seen in years, probably the sweetest left foot i have EVER seen too, this guy is the full package step down Lionel Messi…

  • 139 Dannyo // Jul 22, 2012 at 4:07 PM

Ye, it’s not about the current members in the squad, i think we’ve shifted allot of deadweight so far this year and some last year, so we’re showing real quality in depth in some positions.
But the defense is still short two blue chips and we need additions up front aswell.
We were hanging by a hairspread at some stages of last season due to injuries and had so, so often square pegs in round holes.
3 players would bring our head above water, blue chip players that is, then maybe 1-2 youngsters who’ll be in the abeid, gael, tav mold.
And just keep replacing that throughout the years.

  • 140 MagpiesFlyHigh // Jul 22, 2012 at 4:11 PM

Aye a good way of putting it.
Three blue chip players will do nicely, possibly four.
Some of the youngsters are going to be mint

  • 141 Valci // Jul 22, 2012 at 4:21 PM

LYF – good player. At that height you have to be gifted otherwise you cant make it in top footy…wouldnt say hes better then Messi though…hasnt got the same control on the ball from what i’ve seen…seems a better shot though. We’ll see how he does in a league where his opponents are actually quality.

  • 142 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jul 22, 2012 at 4:26 PM

2-3 first team or close players and we’d be sorted completely imo. More than that and we’d start to find it hard to accommodate them. I’m really for an emphasis on young hungry players mixed with quality players hitting their peak. Future is looking good guys :)

think a left-footed LB more a priority than Debuchy, of coz if we can get a pair of new FBs then perfect, esp if Simmo is leaving. maybe an initial bid of 4-5m for Aly Cissokho who seems wanting to quit Lyon anyway?

  • 151 mattyNUFC // Jul 22, 2012 at 4:47 PM

it is a harsh assessment of gosling but i completely agree. It would be great to be proven wrong though

vuckic – still think he can be world class. definitely think he needs a season in the championship. he’s good, he show’s great awareness but he’s still very young and for so much time missed during probably the most important juncture of his very young career, to be pushing hard for a first team spot the way he is now is quite commendable. a year of competitive, first team football will do a world better than brief cameos at the end of already-determined premier league games.

Abeid – definitely does not need to go out on loan. ready to be pushing for the first team.

Bigi – same as above. Also, like Tiote is a bit of a terrier but has great distribution for his age. would like to see him push forward more because he does well at retaining possession.

tiote – there has never been a DCM quite like him. tenacious doesn’t even come close

    encouraging stuff though.

….and i, like most, am not exactly instilled with confidence when i see Eliot in goal

  • 152 scots_mag88 // Jul 22, 2012 at 4:48 PM

Yeah I’m thinking about just switching it off and deleting it too. As u say it’s all London clubs especially arsenal. Plus Liverpool Chelsea and the Manchester clubs. It’s an absolute joke.

  • 153 toonLYF // Jul 22, 2012 at 4:55 PM

Valci – on Shaqiri, he’s only 20 remember, maybe not better than Messi, ok, but he sits comfortably in the same bracket, i personally prefer him due to how direct he is, and the ability to cut in 40 yards from goal when nothing is on and just drive one into the top corner, outstanding really.

  • 154 toonLYF // Jul 22, 2012 at 4:58 PM

Matty aye, had to be said, he didn’t do himself any favours last season in the appearances he made, there’s only so long you can keep thinking “he can still come good”, particularly when the player is showing no improvements (partially down to injury i know but still it’s no real excuse for a top flight player) – to anyone reading this, i’m talking about Gosling not Vuckic, i think the stick Vuckic is getting is ridiculous….remember lads HES 19!!

  • 155 nick_9 // Jul 22, 2012 at 4:59 PM

It’s nice to see most people agreeing we still need three good players to have a bit of depth. The three being a CB, FB and a ST. A lot of people are suggesting it is a RB we need due to Simpson being useless going forward and struggling for a new deal, I would argue that we either need a first choice RB and get rid of Simpson with tav as backup or a first choice LB. Santon, Simpson and tav are all right footed yet we have no left footed FB. Santon in my opinion would be better at RB but if he gets injuries who fills in for him? A round peg in a square hole? Ferguson either needs to commit to being a lb and bulk up a little or talk to pardew about being a winger. if either colo or Taylor get injured at Cb once again we will struggle so a full back is a must. Williamson and perch are not good enough cover, same with our attacking options after ba and cisse. Best and lovenkrands have left, ranger is to gangster to play, shola is ageing and Xisco is pants. CB, FB and a ST this window should see us right and I would be disappointed if we didn’t sign players for those positions, not asking for mega money signings I’d be happy with Debuchy, Rhodes and some cheap cb, even if we sell ranger, Xisco, obertan and Simpson to raise the money for new players so be it.

On a plus note watching the friendly last night left me pleased with tavernier, bigi, medi and sammy ameobi. I can see tavernier, sammy and bigi finding first team football this season. I was very surprised at sammy last night as someone who is sceptical of him, he did well.

    nick 9

good points. in fairness i tink pardrew is well aware he needs players in those three positions – hence all the transher targets are those positions.

i aggree that if debuchy comes in, then simpson should be sold. preferably i would prefer if he went at xmas as it might be tough for debuchy to settle into the team straight away and it will allow tav to settle in as 2nd choice rb with a few games in the cups.

in refernece to fergusion, i aggree, its unclear his position, i was expecting more of him last season with enrique going..he’s a bit light weight still for lb. i think jonas can fill in lb too and perch did admirably last year filling in defensive positions..what a fighter. course ryan taylor is there too.

pardrew has identified set pices a weakness and wants a cb who can get some goals from corners..williamson is good cover and is excellent with defensive headers, but lacks pace and dosnt chip in with enough goals. i would be happy to see douglas come in.

in terms of strikers, i dont understand pardrew statement that he sees ba playing 90% of games in the cf can he do that when cisse is better at that.

  • 166 coatesy17 // Jul 22, 2012 at 5:55 PM

So jsut something i noticed last night, Raylor, everytime he got into a crossing opportunity on the left, used his left foot as if pards has said, if you wana play 1st team LB again (like the start of last season) use your left foot more, it looked as though he really tried not to check back onto his right!!! just a thought

  • 167 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 22, 2012 at 5:56 PM

He’s apparently on £25k. He wants £30k. Better players like Raylor and Perch are on less money. We have Santon, Raylor, Perch and Tavernier who can play right-back. We don’t have 1 natural left-back. It’s obvious that we need to get rid of one or two right-backs. Raylor and Perch offer versatility and should be kept on.

Imo we have to at least buy 4 players. 1 SB, 1 CB, 1 winger and 1 striker. Our defence is not good enough considering we will get injuries. Can’t see steven taylor injuryfree for the whole season (hope i’m wrong)

  • 171 Tsunki // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:22 PM

Damn you Ketsy you really are a genius. Sell Simmo now whatever happens, whether we sign a replacement or not? He he he he you are a card. Whatever everyone thinks of simmo, he was Pards’ No.1 go-to RB so I see that happening when Michael Owen comes back.

Henceforth I shall make no more Scharner comments save for obviously this one.

I have cancelled my Sky sub outright actually. I got the sports pack half price last year and yes we did have a lot of games but most of them I went to anyway. Apparently the price was going to be the thick part of £70/month to keep all the stuff I had on and no movies either (and NO, no other ‘special’ channels). So it’s back to the foxsat HDR box and I can’t say I’m bothered. Especially snce the missus said it’s either that or the ST. Naturally, I expect a call in a couple of months. ;)

nufc786 – if we can’t combine our powers to kill it, then our influence is waning…..

  • 176 nufc786 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:27 PM

  • 177 Tsunki // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:28 PM

oh and coatsy – ha ha it’s hard to resist isn’t it? this is a top notch troll mate, one of the finest to come off the line imo.

  • 178 nufc786 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:28 PM

    im up for tht……..

  • 179 Papiss9 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:29 PM

I have been on vacation and not followed all the transfergossip. I see we are linked to Debuchy,Douglas,Anita and Andy Carroll.. Is there anybody else we are being linked with?

  • 180 Tsunki // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:31 PM

go on, nufc786 – you tell him ha ha……:)

  • 181 Papiss9 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:32 PM

Where is everybody on a sunday evening??

  • 182 Tsunki // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:33 PM

It’s about this time that fat mags slumber while their bodies digest yorkshire puddings I think.

  • 183 nufc786 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:33 PM

papiss9 rumors of loic remy , links with Cesar Azpilicueta thts really it i think……..

  • 184 Tsunki // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:34 PM

..don’t forget paul scharner oh no I said it again.

  • 185 nufc786 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:35 PM

is is ibiza having a siesta?????????

  • 186 Papiss9 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:36 PM

Those two would fit nice in to the team, but we have to pay some good money for them I think..

I hope we can buy a pacey striker.. we really need that.

  • 187 Papiss9 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:37 PM

There was a list of all the free transfers on this blog some day in may i think. I mentioned Scharner, and I was killed for it.. hehe

  • 188 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:37 PM

As much as Debuchy seems to be the premium signing,I think Pieters would be the most sensible and to repeat my self I would be in Kets league if I suggested signing both of them.

  • 189 Tsunki // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:38 PM

Papiss9 – to be fair I think most of us wouldn’t have frequented the blog so much if we knew at the start of the window just how much it would drag on. I think we have all underestimated the brinkmanship and hustle of Mike’s crew. Not to mention the resolve not to be taken the p*** out of shown by our target players’ clubs.

  • 190 nufc786 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:38 PM

Papiss9- so it was you who got kets going????

  • 191 Tsunki // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:40 PM

Papiss9 – yeah you might have mentioned it, but Ketsbaia is really pushing for him. I think he’s parked outside his house in a chevette with a flask and a torch, and a roll of carpet and a rope in his boot.

  • 192 Papiss9 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:42 PM

    nufc786, hehe dont know ;)

I’m demanding debuchy and a quality CB. The board must understand that this window is the time to splash some cash.. Spurs have got AVB and might loose Modric, Manu haven’t done much yet, Arsenal might loose RVP and liverpool wont get top 4. If we get 4 players of good quality in, we should have a very good sesason

  • 193 nufc786 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:42 PM

i dont mind kets expressing his desired signings no problem at all but frequently its been paul scharner………..

  • 194 Tsunki // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:45 PM

dear me if you say paul scharner enough it starts to lose it’s meaning. The same happened to me with Carl Cort.

  • 195 Papiss9 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:45 PM

ok. He would come for free, and imo is better at CB than willy. Hope we buy some real quality and dont end up with someone like scharner tho..

  • 196 nufc786 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:48 PM

Papiss9- quality cb is a must if we desire the the upgrade of a top 6 team which we all do…. its either sakho or douglas for me…..

and kets i would have liked alderwierld to be our preferred cb but as many ppl have said especially to you he has made the intention to stick it out with ajax –

  • 197 Tsunki // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:49 PM

Well if it’s only us four in here we should turn a few lights off. Tell you what I’ll go out for a bit and just leave you kids to it. I’ll pop back and see if anyone turns up later on. Don’t use up all the hot water.

  • 198 Papiss9 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:50 PM

Agree. Why dont we just give twente 5 for douglas if thats what the price is. considering we payed them just 3,5 for tiote, we owe them a lot ;)

  • 199 nufc786 // Jul 22, 2012 at 6:52 PM

they dont want us robbing them again…..
