This is some news we missed out on earlier today, that Newcastle have bid for French international striker Loic Remy, but had their bid immediately rejected – and Newcastle have been interested in this lad since early 2008, according to our records.
Loic Remy – Newcastle bid €12M for French striker
There are reports in Le 10 Sport that Newcastle offered around €12M ( (about £9.5M) for the 25-year-old, but that apparently didn’t come close to the valuation of the player by his club Marseilles.
This move by Newcastle is a little bit of a surprise to us, and we wouldn’t expect the Tyneside club to go in with such an initial large bid, and certainly don’t expect an improved bid being made by Newcastle for the 6′ striker, who has played 16 times for France with 4 goals.
He joined Marseilles from Nice back in 2010, and has so far played 83 times for the French club with 37 goals, so that’s a decent goal-scoring record.
Tottenham and Lille have also been interested in the French striker, who was born in Rillieux-la-Pape, and has previously played for Lyon, Lens on loan, and Nice.
But this seems to show that Newcastle are by no means certain of the Andy Carroll deal going through, and if it doesn’t, then Newcastle still need to bring in a fourth striker for next season.
It may not have been a bad deal to have brought in former top target Modibo Maiga a couple of weeks back, who has now gone to West Ham for just £5M.
But of course when you fail a player in his medical, it’s kind of hard to go back and bring him in a second time, and we have no idea how serious Modibo’s medical condition was, that forced the Magpies to call time on him last December – but it seemed a little bit strange.
But we are very happy with the striker Newcastle eventually brought in – Papiss Cisse – and we have to think Newcastle knew at the time, that he was going to become available from German club SC Freiburg.
Remy must have been tracked by Chief Scout Graham Carr over the last year or so, and it’s a little bit of a surprise that Newcastle made such a big offer for the French International, who didn’t even seem to be on the radar screen.
However, when we look back in our records, Newcastle were said to be interested in Remy way back in May of 2008 when he was only 21, and still at Lyon – we should have signed him then.
And that article also makes interesting reading about where we were at Newcastle four years ago, and who would have thought we’d be relegated in a very short 12 months – my arm has just started to ache again. 😀
What do you think?

Comment #8PSG has purchased lavezzi and zlatan, certainly gameiro wont get much playingtime there, with that big squad. Maybe get a loandeal with option to buy on him..
I think remy is out of our reach beacause of the price.

Comment #21why do people clamour for Gameiro, we were reportedly turned down last year so if he wasn’t so keen then, why go back now
thats if what was rumoured / reported last year was true and i’m not saying he would be a bad signing, just whats his record like and why would he be good for us ?

Comment #30Remy is a quality lad. He would git in on the left wing for us but might be out of our price range but it depends on how much both clubs are willing to negotiate.
On the Gameiro front…i’d honestly prefer any of the strikers we’ve been linked with this summer.

You’d prefer AC/De Jong instead of Gameiro?
We have BA and Cisse and Shola, we dont need an other targetman. We need a pacey mobile striker who knows how to finish

Comment #38Remy probably wants to sign for us. We should made a bid for Giroud. Arsenal got a good deal there. Giroud is better in terms of form but Remy has potential.
We need a third striker and maybe a versatile midfielder who can play up front as well.

Comment #39This story came up last night on nufc fans and all it said was £12mill Remy bid rejected Newcastle Interested but if u read the whole story the 12m euro bid was from spurs a few months ago it just says we r looking at him but are we willing to pay 18m euro

Comment #40Papiss – not really my type of player. Its all subjective obviously… i’d rather get a pacey winger if we gonna play 4-3-3 and have our offensive line interchange positions for variance. I don’t think 4-3-3 will be our main formation but we’ll see.
