Warren Barton played for Newcastle from 1995 through 2002, and he now lives in Southern California and is Fox Sports Chief football analyst in the US, and is featured for all the English Premier League games throughout the season, and he comes across as an excellent and knowledgeable pundit.
Warren Barton in Fox Sports studio in LA
He is also a die hard Newcastle United fan, and the other analysts often make fun of that, as Warren doesn’t try to hide his affiliation, and is often as daft as other Newcastle fans, when we have have a good victory.
Warren also keeps his hand in with football, and he is the Head Coach and co-owner of the San Diego Flash, who play in the US National Premier Soccer League – West Division – Southern Conference, and that’s the fourth tier of US football, which they call soccer over here to differentiate it from American Football.
Warren is an excellent analyst and it’s not surprising he would have something to say about the Andy Carroll situation, and it’s also not surprising what he says, as it’s obvious Warren thinks Newcastle are a great club, which he keeps telling everybody on the TV. 😀
This is what Warren had to say about the Andy Carroll saga:
“I feel it would be a good move for Andy. He knows the area, he is a Geordie boy.” “He made it quite clear all along that he never wanted to leave the club – and though he might not have been exactly pushed out the door, the money was obviously just too good for Newcastle to turn down.”
“I am sure if he does come back there might be one or two groans and moans about the place – but as an ex-player here and an ex-captain, I definitely support the idea. Some clubs just feel like home. You just have that comfortable feeling.”
“I definitely did when I arrived at Newcastle. I felt right at home and seven years later was still there!” “It’s that way with Andy and – even if he does face the odd complaint – it won’t be too many.”
“The Geordies are good people – Andy may have left under a cloud but he won’t return under one.” “I’m not shocked that Brendan Rodgers doesn’t want him when you look at the way his teams always play.”
“The fact is Andy plays well when you play to Andy’s strengths – which is by being a bit more direct – and Newcastle can do that as they have more width.” “Whenever Carroll’s had an impressive game, either for Liverpool in the FA Cup semis or with England at the Euros, it’s been one of those rugged games and performances.”
“That’s what he’s all about. That’s what he thrives on.” “At Liverpool, as can happen with any young player who costs huge amounts of money, he tried to justify himself by doing things that weren’t his normal game.”
“It’s clearly not worked out and that could be very much Newcastle’s gain because there’s no doubt they’d be getting a better player back than the one they sold for £35M.” ” Newcastle are not the only Premier League club interested in Carroll.
“If I was looking at Fulham, West Ham and Newcastle, I wouldn’t see it as much of a choice.” “Newcastle are a much bigger club, who are looking to be successful and build off the back of a tremendous last season.” “It just seems like a deal that would work all round.”
“It would give Andy a fresh start and Newcastle some serious firepower.” “Imagine the attacking alternatives available to the manager.” “Hopefully it gets done soon because nobody wants it dragging on for the rest of the summer.”
Those are good words from Warren Barton and not unexpected, and of course Warren played with Joe Kinnear when he was at Wimbledon (The Crazy Gang) from 1990 through 1995, before joining Newcastle for a £4M fee, which in those days was a big transfer fee.
Joe managed Wimbledon from 1992 though 1999 and was at Newcastle from September 2008 through the next summer, but suffered heart problems in early February, in his valiant attempts to keep Newcastle in the Premier League.
Warren Barton is now 43, and he’s one of the best ambassadors for Newcastle United anywhere to be found.
Those in the US (and Canada), who watch the Fox Soccer Channel during the season, will know exactly what I mean.
It’s also good advice he gives to big Andy.

Comment #1Best advice I can give to AC is wind your head in accept your old wage at NUFC and continue to learn your trade and with luck you will become a more complete footballer.
As with others in the squad your wage will increase as your value to the squad increases

Comment #2I’m sure Barton is right, coming back would be good for AC .I’m just not convinced it would necessarily be good for Newcastle , and certainly not at any of the prices we have seen in the press.
Sentiment shouldn’t cloud the mind and distract us from which other players we couldbuy with that money.
I still have faith in our management team so \i’m waiting to see how this unfolds.

Comment #3I remember when Warren signed for us it was a record transfer for a defender. Its nice to know he is spreading the Newcastle love to all the yanks lol. I would love to see Carroll bk but only because it gives us other options, also Carroll will have to realise he wont be the number 1 guy in our hearts anymore.

Comment #6A lot of positives from preseason so far and we haven’t even seen saylor, cabaye or HBA yet -three of our top players. Add debuchy and a top quality cb and striker and possibly a midfielder and its mouthwatering.
Vuckic isn’t that bad a player – we know he can play well in the first team. Obertan however needs to step it up as I’m beggining to doubt he will improve. He is still young though but he’s had alot of chances.

Comment #7Good words from Barton about AC and I do think he is a great player, but for me he does not fit into the new NUFC geordie or no geordie.
We play with a lone striker and two inside forwards; you cannot play AC wide and you cannot have in on the bench for too long.
Lets spend that £ 35 mil somewhere else 🙂

Comment #10I notice no one is giving Paul Scharner any advice on his dream move to Newcastle. I guess our marquee signing will have to figure it out himself.

Comment #11Sorry for the re-post from the last thread, but just trying to spread the word for an amazing cause.
Good luck to Josh. He is doing an amazing thing and for an excellent cause.
I know how important Josh’s cause is, we unfortunately lost my wife’s grandad yesterday after a long and painful battle with the Big “C”, and he had spent 7 weeks in St Oswald’s Hospice, Gosforth, at the end and the people who work in these places ( the vast majority being volunteers) are simply magnificent. Nothing is too much trouble for them to make the patient or any member of their family feel even a tiny bit better. These guys and girls are heroes in every sense of the word, selfless and caring throughout, just truly amazing people.
I am currently thinking about ways we can raise money for St Oswald’s, as they need as much money as they can to keep giving the tremendous support they offer.
So again, good luck Josh, you are obviously in the same mould as the people from St Oswalds, magnificent!

Comment #12How does Andy Carroll give us a different option? He offers exactly what shola offers us at the moment. A quick st who plays on the last man would offer a different option to current.

Comment #14NUFC83:
I am with you on the striker issue. We need a ‘fox in the box’ like bellamy was, someone who has pace to burn (not another Obertan), who can actually scare defenders and create/score goals. Andy Carroll is a better striker than Shola in my opinion, but how do you fit him in this current side? Answer is, you can’t.

Comment #15@Ashwin. Without starting up an old debate I dont like shola, not for his dedication but as a footballer. Therefore when I say another option I dont take him into account also Andy is by far a better player.

Comment #16Warren is a very knowledgeable pundit, much better than what the bbc have had for years.
Good ambassador for the club but as he says when Andy played for Liverpool it was like a messy game .
Is that the type of football we wanna play?

Comment #18Paul Scharner is a different matter. His midfield nous and creative flair, coupled with his steely determination and will to win, and goalscoring capabilities, we should easilly be able to accommodate him in our side. In fact I bet he could even be our stand in goalkeeper if he was asked to. Such is the devotion to total football that this Germanic powerhouse posesses.

Comment #20As for needing striker cover, we are giving a trial to a 19 year old French lad who looks to be a younger Cisse. The Carr engine is not asleep at the wheel !!!
